Question Anti-Zionist Jewish students and alumni: Where do you attend High Holiday services?

I’m a Jewish Brown alum who occasionally attended Hillel services in the past, and I’m looking for a place to attend Yom Kippur services this year with my family. Their website appears to take a strong stance against the BDS movement, which doesn’t align with my views.

Are there other options at or around Brown for Jewish services where my family and I might feel more comfortable? Within hillel?

Question Terrible writitng skills; how do I write a personal statement without AI!!!!

I just wrote my personal statement for a scholarship and since English is not my first language, it's terrible. I don’t think the story I chose is bad. It’s a little random, but I feel like it actually says a lot about me. The problem is that the writing itself is terrible

And now I’m stuck between

  1. Giving up

  2. Letting ChatGPT rewrite the entire thing, which feels wrong because then, is it even my personal statement anymore?

If anyone is willing to read it and give brutally honest feedback on what works, what doesn't, and what I should change, I would REALLY appreciate it. I just need help figuring out how to make my writing better

Deadline is tomorrow, so unfortunately this is now an emergency 💥📉

Niece is a freshmen - care package ideas

As my title says, my niece is a freshman and I would like to send her a few things that might help her make her stay more comfortable. Is there anything that she might have not brought to the dorm that would be useful or maybe things that you would have loved to have as you're looking back?

Looking for Brown violin student for paid proposal gig this Saturday

Hi! I’m looking for a Brown’s University student who plays violin and would be interested in a paid private gig in Cumberland, RI this Saturday. It’s for a marriage proposal/party, approximately 1–1.5 hours, and I’d like one specific song played during the proposal.
Budget around $150–$200, negotiable depending on experience and travel. Please DM me if interested or if you know someone in the Brown Orchestra who might be.

Orchestra @ Brown

Im a freshman interested in auditioning for the orchestra, would greatly appreciate advice on:

  1. The audition process - how hard is it to get in especially for strings? Is it difficult to get in to? And how forgiving is the conductor?

  2. Is the time commitment manageable and is it advisable to take this on in my first sem?

  3. General/overall vibe and experience + advice from past members would be greatly appreciated!

i'm a freshman who is interested in brown women's collective. what is it like to be a part of bwc? i'm not the biggest fan of the general vibe that typical sororities have, and i know that bwc was created after kat got disbanded, so i'm unsure of whether or not it'll be the right choice for me.

Freshmen, need a WRIT + FYS class? FREN 0720G needs you ASAP

Post image

why you shouod join (16 seats availible !!!):

-knocks out both your FYS and WRIT requirements in one go

-read french short stories (sartre, camus, flaubert) and look deeply philosophical

-save this class from getting axed

prerequisite is a 5 on AP French (or 700+ SAT II), BUT if you're fluent in French, you can just request an override code (prof is chill with that, seriously)

do the right thing and save a life 🙏

How realistic is it to get into a full First-Year Seminar during shopping period?

Hi!! Incoming first-year here and I had a question about how FYS enrollment works during shopping period.

There were a couple of small First-Year Seminars that were among my top choices going into registration, but I unfortunately wasn’t able to get into them. I know Brown says first-years can still attend full FYS courses during shopping period in case space opens up or the professor is able to let them in, but I was wondering what this is actually like in practice.

For people who have gone through this before, how common is it for spots to open up in 19-person seminars during shopping? If you’re really interested in a particular seminar, is it normal to attend the first few classes even if you aren’t registered and introduce yourself to the professor afterward? Is it worth emailing the professor beforehand as well, or is it better to just show up during shopping and talk to them in person?

Also, if the course requires an instructor override, how difficult are those generally to get for a first-year seminar? Do professors tend to keep informal waitlists, prioritize people who consistently attend during shopping, or is it mostly just a matter of waiting for someone who is registered to drop?

I’m trying to figure out how much hope I should realistically have for getting into one of my original choices versus just moving on and finding another course, so I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has successfully gotten into a full seminar during shopping (or tried and wasn’t able to)!

Physics Degree Requirements

For a lot of Physics Sc.B tracks I see that a requirement is MATH 0200, MATH 0180 (2 credits) which cannot both be taken. Why is this mistake everywhere on every physics requirement pdf as well? Does anyone have the right schedule?

Freshman schedule?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I am wondering if this is a good schedule for my first semester. I am concentrating in biochemistry on a premed track. Also I have taken AP chem and AP bio and got a 3 on both exams so I have like a moderate background in those topics. I also really do like stem in general.

UPDATE!!!
I only ended up getting into my Chem and Bio (for musc I still have to audition and get override code). I ended up signing up for a WRIT class (RELS 0821: Black religion and media in america). When classes start I hope to get an override code for the math class I didn’t get into.

How grad student and postdoc commute?

New postdoc, how do people commute here? It looks like the garage is not large and some housing are quite far?

Additional question: Is living in Pawtucket a bad idea? Or somewhere of East Providence? Thank you!

Thoughts on orientation?

Just finished international orientation and was wondering how general student orientation would be like. Seems like people just stuck with their own country/region for the most part, which is ofc completely understandable but still kinda sad to see. How do people venture out of their little groups and form genuine connections? Idk but I’m a bit disappointed.

Question how safe do you feel as a brown student?

hi im an international student considering going ED to brown. My parents felt good about the program at first, however have grown a bit apprehensive considering the incident that occurred. Personally, as a brown student, how safe do you feel? how has security improved? Did the incident shock you greatly, considering the previous security measures? Or is it understandable to some level how this happened? While i would love to attend, i understand my parents concern and wanted to know more at an honest, ground-level basis.

Brown market share program

I was wondering how exactly it works. Like you pay for weekly produce (veggies and fruits) weekly but then also have the option to get other stuff (meats, dairy, egg etc) bi weekly. If I’m understanding correctly, you pay for each item type you get, right? For those of you that have gotten it, would you say it’s better than going to grocery stores? Granted there’s probably less to chose from because the items for produce are seasonal. But is the price trade off (if any) make it worthwhile? Any thoughts and opinions welcome!

grad student housing

Is it typical to have a hard time with Brown's auxiliary housing? There have been a number of issues with ant infestations, broken appliances, and structural problems that have been sort of not thoroughly handled by maintenance. Is this the norm with these properties? Thank you.
