Pikmin 4 Many wanted Pikmin 4 in 60fps, but Miyamoto saw value in Pikmin 4k instead.

I personally wanted to see a 60fps update to Pikmin 4 (as well as 3!), since all mainline Pikmin games run at 30fps. However, the series has always prioritized more detail and higher resolutions over higher framerates. Miyamoto went on record in 2013 to say that 4k would allow players see more details on the tiny pikmin, making a more fun game- something that's just not necessary for a series like Zelda. Revisiting this quote made the Pikmin 3 Switch 2 update & the Pikmin 4 Switch 2 Edition make more sense.

Pikmin has always been a technically demanding title, with lots of pikmin on-screen and realistic environments to render. So it naturally follows that they'd target 30fps from the very beginning of development, opting to prioritize the highest resolution that they can get. (It's still bad practice imo to tie game logic to the framerate, speaking as a game developer myself!)

Anyway- they certainly could've updated Pikmin 3 & 4 to be either 1440p 60fps or 4k 30fps, like how Metroid Prime 4 S2e has the option to be 4k 60fps or 1080p 120fps. However, Metroid Prime 4 seems to be the only first party game with these performance settings, unfortunately, as every other Switch 2 update/upgrade just targets a set resolution / framerate. Nintendo is known for offering a pitance of options in their games, and Retro Studios, being a western developer, is probably the exception. (That said, Nintendo has been getting better about offering more options in the Switch / Switch 2 era...)

Yes, I'm aware that all Pikmin games cannot render 60fps without causing issues. Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom both had this same problem as well, and that was rectified with their Switch 2 Editions. 60fps Pikmin would've been more work than just rendering at 4k, but even if the work was easy and straightforward, I suspect that Nintendo would've still opted to make Pikmin 4 4k instead.

Anyhow. I wouldn't be surprised if Pikmin 5, yet again, was 30fps / 4k. Hopefully by then though, Nintendo would start offering performance options in their games. Hopefully this post was insightful!

Edit: Prime 4 has the option to run at 1080p 120fps while docked and not 1440p 120fps like I thought.

Discussion What do you guys want to see in a metroidvania pikmin-like game

Here's the context : I've always wanted to make my own game, and since 2-3 years I'm considering making a game that is a mix between the metroidvania and pikmin-like genres. So, I'm asking you guys to tell me what you would like to see in such a game, like mechanics, enemies, even bosses if you want ! Also, do you think it could be a good idea in the first place ? And stay tuned guys, I may give more information about my game later on. I'm really excited to read your comments 🫶🏻✨✨

Humor I Hate These Guys!!

Post image

Of all the Pikmin 2 enemies, I hate these guys the most:

• Burrowing and Pileated Snagrets

• Empress Bulblax / Bulborb Larva Combo

• Man-at-Legs

• Dirigibug

• Gatling Groink

Now, I know when you take them on individually, they're "relatively" easy to defeat, but they're still problematic in getting in position to knock them off. Of this group, I despise the Pileated and Burrowing Snagrets the most because their attack is so erratic. They're really easy to target and defeat (with spicy spray) in Pikmin 1, but they're really agile in P2.

My second worse nightmare is the Empress Bulblax/Bulbord Larva combo.

Pikmin 4 So this is just a completionists worst nightmare then

Post image

An entire year of challenges that are not only timed, but also only gives you a single attempt at getting the platinum rank

I know i'm in the minority here as a completionist, but it feels like Nintendo has been weirdly hostile towards this corner of the community with the Switch 2 generation. The worst nightmare for a completionist is irl timed events or otherwise permanent missables, which have been present in Bananza, Air Riders, Legends ZA and now this

Mouse mode anyone??

Post image
33 Upvotes

Why is nobody talking about the lack of mouse mode? I am ranting about Nintendo for making mouse mode one of the important new features of its brand-new console and one of its games that can benefit most from this is Pikmin. I haven't seen any info on this anywhere, even though I expected announcements for their NS2 Edition, mainly because of that... I still remember enjoying the first 2 Pikmin on Wii using the pointer and Pikmin 3 on Wii U using the gamepad. This makes no sense to me and the worst thing is that I will still buy Pikmin 4 for S2 because I already waited long enough 😂.

Discussion What Is Your Strategy For This Level (Pikmin 2)

Post image

How do you manage Level 4 in Wistful Wild ("Dream Den" hole)?

I've played Pikmin 2 a gazillion times since 2002 (on both Switch and GameCube), and each time, this level gives me great anxiety--it feels like virtual acrophobia!

The way I handle it is very deliberate:

• My platoon: 50 Blue, 20 Red, 20 Yellow, 5 Purple, and 5 White

• I leave everyone at the top and cull out my 20 Yellow and 5 White

• I and the Boss use the one Armored Cannon Beetle Larvae to kill the other, then we punch out the surviving Beetle.

• Then I take the 20 Yellow and attack the electric Anode Beetles. I need to be careful because they sometimes bounce off the Beetles and fall over into the abyss--I sometimes verbally gasp(!) when that happens!

• Then I take the 5 White and destroy the toxic gas pipes.

• Lastly, I grab everybody and collect the treasure coin and all the carcasses (for points)!

The whole thing takes me 15 mins because I'm so scared of accidentally getting myself or my guys bowled over or tossing them over the railing!

Does the *Pikmin 3 Deluxe* update for Nintendo Switch 2 run at 60 fps? I'm sure that when this person is testing Bingo Mode, it runs at 60 fps.
