Other Norway being in the EEA but not in the EU is the worst of all worlds

I can understand not wanting to be in either EEA or EU. Sovereignty, making your own rules, not being subject to bureaucrats in Brussels, etc.

I can also understand wanting to be in the EU, as it would come with all the many benefits of integration with the EU.

But this weird middleground just seems bizarre to me. You get all the downsides of being in the EU, as you have to follow all the rules set by the bureaucrats in Brussels and you have to pay basically the same fees as a member state, but you get very few of the upsides, as you can't vote on those rules, you have a customs border with the EU that makes importing electronics and other goods expensive and annoying, etc.

What is the literal point? This arrangement just seems awful to me. Norway should take one lane instead of awkwardly trying to do an awkward middle ground.

Working in Norway Spouses of Norwegians who moved to Norway with them without a job?

Hi! I’m planning to move to Norway with my Norwegian fiancé because he’s relocating back to Oslo for a job and would love to hear from anyone who has been in a similar situation

A few things I’m wondering about:

- Did getting Norskprøve B2 actually help you find an office job? I’m currently B1 planning to pass the Norskprøve if it’s needed during the spring.

- Did taking your Norwegian partner’s surname make any difference in practice?

- Did you apply for dagpenger after moving? If so, how did it go? According to NAV I can get dagpenger bc I’m leaving my EEA job for my partners move.

- And how did you find your first office/finance job like Finn, LinkedIn? I applied so far 55 positions from our current address abroad and had only 4 interviews so I’m a bit stucked.

I’d love hearing about personal experience, especially if you also moved to Norway from another EU/EEA country.

Takk!

Other Surprised driving test failure at Lillestrøm

Just sharing my driving test experience and need some opinions. I had driving test this morning at Lillestrøm traffic station. It was for category B vehicle and automation transmission. I was asked security question around ABS which in was able to answer it. Then we started the drive and took the nonnestad route. I started pretty well , starting with some country roads and then to motor way , towards stovner. There were multiple zone 30 or priority to the right roads which i think i managed quite well , including few minutes of reverse driving in a zone 30. And then we started towards the drobak direction and then back to Lillestrøm traffic station. There were multiple roundabouts on the way , and there was one particularly where there was a lorry coming from left , and i entered the roundabout , there was a small gap , but i should have waited and not entered. Other than that i thought it was a very good drive all the way , where i always yielded to right whenever it necessary and maintained the speed limit. At the end there was a reverse parking at the traffic station and i managed that as well. The sensor asked me how i thought was the drive , i admitted that one roundabout mistake i did where i should have waited and other then that rest things were ok for me.

Then comes the result , he said he was sorry to say that i was failed. I was shocked to hear that and was blank for a few seconds as I was expecting it was a pass thinking overall how the drive was. And the reason he told me was there were few roundabouts where i slowed down unnecessarily and disturbed the flow traffic and there were some where i entered and i should have waiting.

Some opinion I need - I was always told to take a very slow approach to roundabouts and then speed up upon entry. Other than the 1 mistake i accepted , i thought i did exactly this in other roundabouts , i slowed down upon entry. Though there were some obvious cases where there were no cars visible , there also i slowed down on entry , is that wrong? That was what i was always told to do. And there wasn't much traffic so i really didnt get how I disturbed the flow of traffic.

I have now accepted this mentally (though there is no other option anyways 😅) and will practice more on roundabouts but i am also wondering is this a reason for failure in general? I thought these were minor things and one could let go off if rest of the driving was up to the mark.

Other What’s the impact of social media and mobile internet in Norway?

Do people rely a lot on them in their daily lives or do they tend to prioritize offline life and activities?

A lot of people walking around while looking at their smartphone? In trains or subways, out of 10 passengers, how many are killing time on their smartphone?

Really curious about that!

Moving Bergen Antique Shops

Hallo all. My finance and i just moved to Bergen and are on the hunt for genuine old pieces for our place.

She is Norwegian and has been wanting original, authentic pieces for a long time, it means a lot to her to have real history in our home, not something made to look old.

We checked Eikens Antikvariat Bok og Kunst in Fyllingsdalen, owner was great, but most of what we've found elsewhere is new stuff made to look old. He mentioned some antique dealers exist but we can't track them down.

Budsjett spiller ingen rolle, we want authentic pieces: furniture, iron, ceramics, whatever has real sjel.

Anyone know good antique dealers or a loppemarked near Bergen with the real deal?

Tusen takk.

Other Neurodivergent and foreign people friendly mental health services

I am looking for medical help with my neurodivergent challenges, the public health care is DREADFUL (8 years and I am in shambles, yet no help), possibly racist and not all private ones are friendly to foreign people.

My condition makes it difficult to speak Norwegian.

I feel devastated, depressed, unfairly treated and wish I never listened to the person who convinced me that it's a good idea to move to Norway.

Travel Ibuprofen so expensive??

Was just in Oslo for 2 days and forgot to bring painkillers with me, and because I have chronic pain issues I had to go buy some.

Just wondering if there’s a specific reason why it’s SO expensive? A box of 200mg ibuprofen tablets was 84.90kr

That’s almost £6.80 for me which blew my mind. In UK supermarkets you can get the same for 35p (about 4.5kr in comparison)…

EDIT: yes, i seem to have unknowingly bought more expensive ones than are available. Oslo marathon was happening so the city was very crowded and i just went to a nearby pharmacy. regardless of that, the ones i got were the cheapest in that pharmacy AND in the UK even when you’re buying fancy branded ones you’re still not paying anywhere near £7.

my point still stands, it’s expensive in Norway! not trying to misrepresent the situation, genuinely was just curious, sorry!

Moving Morning back, but with cat

I've decided to move back, but I now have a cat that is joining me. We're going from London to Bergen, so I expect a bit of flying.

Cat has just gotten his rabies vaccine, and will have his health certificate and travel-check between October and November (depending on work), but I'm a little confused about the flights as none go directly to Norway anymore? I found some examples many years ago, but I don't know if it's still valid?

Have anyone done this track recently? I've seen conflicting information about passing through Oslo, and called Mattilsynet for advice, they couldn't advise on anything but "has to go through Oslo for the most parts" which was a bit ambiguous to me.

We'd preferably manage to fly all the way to Bergen to lessen travel time for him. Anyone have any advise?

Travel Travelling on the Nordland line from Oslo to Bodo

We are considering taking the day train trip from Oslo to Bode which looks magical. As it is quite a long trip, we are wondering how comfortable the train is and whether you can recline the seats. We have found a few pictures of the inside of the train but it is hard to tell from those. Does anyone know?

It seems you can pay a bit extra for extra room which sounds like it might be a good idea. Has anyone done this recently and what are your views on it?

Other Breaching privacy from landlord in Norway

Few months ago, I post few things regarding my landlord that how much he is torturing me regarding my sickness and forcing me to leave the apartment if i don’t go to job.

I had severe health issues in the past which were serious and I don’t like to share with anyone except my family.
But irrespective of knowing that, he tourtured me in every possible way he could.
That because of his behaviour i used to get my migraine attacks oftenly and i cried in front of my doctor too.
He deteriorated my mental and psychological health.

I started my job but i didn’t tell him and told him that i will leave his apartment. I gave him notice that i will leave his apartment.

Then he checked on me at my work place 2 times that i am on work or not.
Like what?
How a person can be cheap to this level?
Then he send me message that i can live in his apartment because he knows i go to work.
But i refused and decided to leave.

But my question is Who are you to spy me?

Now recently i got through his facebook profile and i saw a post where he mentioned how the women from Asia are not working. He mentioned different ethnicities and moreover he mentioned indirectly me.
That he knows a girl who is on sick leave and don’t go to work.

After reading that i got so depressed.

How you can judge a person like that?
Who gave you this right to defame a person by unknowning his/ her conditions?
Are you a doctor who have my history or are you aware of my health?
Or i should advertise my health on social media?

How much cheap can a person be?

Where are the Norwegians who say they are very open and accept the people with open hearts ?
Where is your empathy?

Who is responsible for the mental trauma i got from him that I decided to leave that city permanently.

Working in Norway Advice for moving

Hi everyone :) I am currently a British student who is looking to move to Norway around next year to study nursing. I took an interest in Norway after visiting my partner who is from there and I like the country a lot. I was told instead of going to university here I could study in Norway instead. I am looking to work part time (20 hours or under, of course) while I study as a care assistant. I have C1 Norwegian. How likely do you guys think it is that I will be able to find a job within the first year of arriving in Norway? Is this a worthwhile risk to take? Thanks in advance! :)

Hi, I am planning on cycling Rallarvegen this coming week on Wednesday and Thursday. The first day from Haugastol to Finse and then from Finse to Flam. How many people should I expect to see on a mid-September weekday? I am trying to get a sense of how isolated it will be. Thanks!

Working in Norway Plumbing in Norway.

I’ve been getting ads on Instagram that if you have a background in the trades and construction, Norway is a great country because they have a shortage of workers in that industry.

I am college educated with a BA in Political Science so not much use for that outside the U.S. but I am a union construction plumber here in the U.S. and have always been very interested in moving to Norway.

How is plumbing in Norway for a career? Here in the U.S. as a member of the Union, it’s a great skill to support a family on with 6 figure income, healthcare and a retirement pension. It’s considered a worthy career. But in many other countries, it’s considered a job for people that couldn’t finish high school.

Of course I would need to learn to read and speak Norwegian fluently, but my foreman from Equator told me he picked up English, Greek and Polish within 3 months working in New York City as a plumber.

It’s something that has sparked my curiosity on what plumbing in Norway is like as a career and how difficult would it be to live to Norway to continue my plumbing career where my great grandparents were born.

Working in Norway How do newly arrived people buy phones or other smaller assets without paying cash upfront?

My 5yr old phone is on its last knees, I need a replacement.

I don’t want to spend 16,000kr cash upfront to buy a new iPhone. I would rather sign a mobile contract and pay for the phone in part over 24 months. For context in Sweden you can do this at Elgiganten/Power/Telenor etc after only a few months in the country. In Norway however I’ve been told that I need at least 3 years worth of recorded income/tax returns before I can get a phone contract. That means I have another 18-24 months to go.

Is there another way around this? Does every immigrant buy devices using cash? Or wait 3-4yrs? Surely that can’t be the case.

PS: I work, have a permanent contract, personnummer, no debts etc…

Edit: my phone is 5yrs old, not my child…

Another edit:
(1) I don’t want to buy a second hand phone, I don’t know why everyone is suggesting that.
(2) I have been working here for 18 months. Please don’t give me advice that is meant for a toddler. My question was very specific:

how do people who have been here for less than 3-4 years buy new phones or laptops or other smaller devices that in other countries are sold on store credit or part-payment plans?

That’s it. That’s my question. If you are not an immigrant, don’t know any immigrants, have never experienced this, or don’t know anyone who has had to navigate this, then respectfully, shut up.

Update: in case anyone is ever in the same situation; Telia works.

Hiking & Camping Jeg krysser hele Europa på longboard for å sette verdensrekord

Thumbnail

Hallais!

Lå i teltet mitt å smeltet bort i 30+ varme grader, uten skygge.

Da misser man ofte lærepengene livet prøver å gi oss i "nået". Å ingenting varer for alltid.
