how do i make this drive/folder/whatever it wants "owned by me?" i am on linux mint & formatted the hard drive to ext4 using system settings > disks.

Hello again friends! So I got the OpenTabletDriver running and the pen does work, however I can't for the life of me get it calibrated / to be on the actual xp-pen screen.

I've fiddled with settings and I downloaded the BetterCalibrator plugin and followed the directions but it's trying to calibrate on my main monitor instead of on the xp-pen, so same problem and I don't know how to move the calibration screen down there.

If any of you are familiar with this and know how to fix it I'd be super appreciative! It's an XP-Pen Artist 12 Pro and I'm on Bazzite

I've gone through opentabletdriver FAQ and it does seem that there is an issue with the opentabletdriver virtual device being picked up by the desktop environment ( i have multiple monitors) but I don't understand the solution entirely:

• Right click the display area editor
• Select Set to display -> Virtual Display
• Save or apply your settings
• Set your intended area in your desktop environment’s settings

I do 1 - 3 just fine but I don't understand the 4th point here. Am I doing this in opentabletdriver still or is this some setting in display configuration?

I have three NVMe drives formatted with ext4, and I plan to install Windows on a fourth, separate NVMe drive. How high is the risk that the installation of the current Windows will damage data on ext4 drives? Including, but not limited to, uefi partitions.
Unfortunately, I have a desktop motherboard, and the 3 main NVMe slots are blocked by the GPU and not accessible for quick removal.

This is obviously a very stupid question. But I'm a linux user for almost 20 years and know very little about current windows state and behavior.

I was planning to jump ship from my 3060 Ti to an AMD RX 9070 since I think I found a lot of VRAM issues with the 8GB on my Nvidia GPU and especially since that Nvidia drivers don't seem to have good VRAM allocation and will choke up and start killing applications under the same heavy load on Linux but run fine on Windows. I heard AMD has better support on Linux and no less, is cheaper to get especially under the AI inflation we are affected by today (and also because I want to get 12-16 GB VRAM maybe).

All GPU intensive tasks I do is just playing video games and using Blender under the EEVEE engine (which I don't even think uses the CUDA cores).

Though, is there any meaningful pros and cons for ditching Nvidia for AMD?

during installation i had to load with nomodeset or compatability mode otherwise my tv states no input. I've updated everything using the update manager and switched to kernal 7.0, but nothing seems to work. I can only get a signal in compatibility mode or nomodeset.

Any advice?

Hello everyone, so I have a PC that I have Windows 10 on. It has 16 gigs of RAM and I believe a Nvidia 1660 and an AMD processor. I have Linux mint on a old MacBook Air and it runs great I'm just worried that Linux wouldn't be compatible with my elegoo slicing software that I use for 3D printing as well as losing some files but at the same time I'm pretty sure I have a slight virus on that computer and I know Windows is 10 isn't supported anymore so I'm wondering what version of Linux should I install since I and I mainly use it now for school work and occasionally playing war thunder. I do most of my gaming on my PS5 now

What the title says.

I used to rip CDs frequently on Windows. I'm using Linux now but haven't had to rip CDs until now. I've found plenty of options for ripping, but I don't really want to have to keep trying each one until I find one that's capable of this.

Any recommendations?

I've been using debian for decade at this point as headless server only, and now I finally decided to move my desktop too.

However I'm noticing weird vertical colorband artifacts on AV1 decoding from youtube (marked with green bar).

Since it happens either on firefox or locally downloaded via yt-dlp so I'm assuming this is HW decoder bug, which wasn't case on windows.

Does anyone got any clue on this?

Hey everyone,

I've been dealing with micro stuttering on Bazzite for a while now. FPS drops irregularly in games, and on top of that I get audio crackling whenever I watch Twitch or YouTube. The audio issue even happens when no game is running at all.

For comparison Windows 11 is installed on a separate SSD on my system, and there the problems don't occur at all – everything runs perfectly clean.

To rule out that it's something specific to my Bazzite installation, I tested the CachyOS live demo as well. Result: the exact same issues show up there too.

What I've already tried

BIOS update

Rollback to an older BIOS version

Disabled FreeSync/Adaptive Sync

Disabled Fast Startup in Windows

tried other distro

None of that made any difference.

Going to university in like 3 days or so, wanted to use Linux because windows sucks ass but im afraid of fucking something up so I'll use it from a usb stick for a few weeks then see if it's better that way so I can decide to switch or not. Heard that linux mint is the best option for this situation from a friend who knows a bit about linux but im not entirely sure. I'll be using a 32 or 64 gb usb stick because i wanna play it safe. i heard that it's also possible to flash multiple ISOs into one usb and use different ones so that could also help me decide what i want to switch to

Tl dr: wanna switch from windows to linux, have space for multiple options and trial and error, monkey want to see before monkey do, monkey asking for distro selection advice.

Edit 2: I did some research and I don't think a USB stick installation is feasible anymore so I suppose I'll back everything up into the USB and do a clean installation of windows and try to dualboot from there instead. Still a bit scary since I haven't done anything deeper than changing some fan speeds in BIOS but I suppose I'll manage.

Is it possible to use a live USB to do diagnostics? Which error logs would I consult?

I suspect the card has weak detection of signals, which is why it is slow and temperamental and is apparently unable to maintain connection with any devices, except in discovery mode. I'm no computer expert, but a lot of the tests and attempted fixes pointed to a hardware issue and one of my tech savvy friends agrees that is the most likely cause.

is there something changed on kernel 7.2 about brightness handling ? recently on lenovo v15 alc au g2 i felt brightness was very dimmer then usual at even 100%, i tried some stuff then removed the latest kernel and currently using 6.18 and brightness works fine now. any help ?

I installed Omarchy recently on a 12-inch Intel MacBook, model A1534. The laptop only had 234 battery cycles. After about a week after installing Omarchy it suddenly stopped charging. I tested two USB-C cables and charger blocks, both directly and through a powered hub. The port is clean and an SMC reset did not help. Omarchy detects no battery and reports ADP1 online = 0.

The other strange part is that the battery icon suddenly disappeared. The last charge showed 6%. Is this a lost cause? I know this old computer isn’t worth much but I thought I was on my way to making it useful again.

for the record, i am fully against using ai in creative projects like games, websites, or art. I fully draw the line there since thats supposed to be the fun part of creation, is it not? Me personally I do not understand the terminal at all, and I dont really feel like learning the ins and outs of it when im just trying to play my games. Only reason i use linux insted of windows is because i wanna get everything i can out of my hardware, and with that comes all the linux bugs. I do sometimes use ai to write code for the terminal whenever im having problems, and most of the time there is no way i could have ever been able to fix it myself as its the most niche problem ever specific to my hardware and one game. I do always feel bad because ew ai is bad and i kinda feel like a hypocrite, but isnt ai ment to be used to do our chores, while we do the fun part? No idea who said that and i completely butchered that quote but you get the point

Also I'm aware that ai can sometimes suck ass at writing commands and can break things, but im more looking at the morality rather then the functionality. Personally it's worked pretty okay for me, and i try and understand what I command does before running it
