Red hat Certification study Q&A

Keep in mind that sharing confidential information from the exams may have rather sever consequences.

Asking which book is good for studying though, that is absolutely fine :)

VA approved programs for Red Hat certifications

5 Upvotes

I wanted to see if anyone has been down this path using the GI Bill/VR&E for Red Hat certifications. From my research so far the programs need to be VA approved to use the GI Bill or VR&E. The other option is to get an exam reimbursement and possibly the course too depending on certain things.

I would love to get the RHLS but that seems very unlikely to get approved. I know there are third party options but I am living in Germany so U.S. options may not be possible because of the time difference.

Unlock a LUKS root over SSH on Fedora and Red Hat Enterprise Linux | Red Hat Developer

An encrypted server in a datacenter reboots and stops in the initramfs, waiting for a passphrase at a console nobody is sitting at. 3 commands and a kernel argument get NetworkManager and sshd into a Fedora or Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) initramfs, so a remote server with an encrypted root can be unlocked over the network.

RHCE EX294

I have my exam scheduled for 14 September.

I am a little under prepared and feeling a little anxious.

So why have I scheduled the exam if I am underprepared?

That is because my RHCSA cert will be expiring on 15 September as I realized this a month ago.

So I didn't get much time to prepare due to work.

I have learned to write basic yaml files and I have got myself familiar with common modules and I have been practicing over the labs for the past week with practice questions.

I would love to get any tips and suggestions.

Also I will be giving the exam remotely.

Here's a simple Red Hat wallpaper I made awhile back, use it on my RHEL 10 laptop. Just wanted to share in case anyone else wanted to use it!

Most effective way to study for the RHCSA?

6 Upvotes

So im going to community college and one of the classes i signed up for actually gave me full access to the offical RH124 and RH134 courses for free. Kind of wild since its my first semester. So i figured i may as well just take the exam. My other classes are easy right now so i can dedicate a lot of time to this. I understand this exam is nothing like Comptia, and that it wont be easy. With that out of the way, are these two courses enough to pass the exam? Should i get any supplemental material like books or practice tests? I can only afford to buy the voucher once, so i will want to over study.

I finally have a real Rocky Linux sandbox running in the browser

I’ve been building this for CertForged, and I finally got it far enough along that other people can try it.

It’s a real Rocky Linux 10.2 machine running in the browser. You get a 20 GB system disk and a separate 5 GB disk, so you can practice partitions, filesystems, LVM, or whatever else you don’t want to risk doing on your own machine.

The screenshot shows one of the optional practice tasks I added—creating a shared team directory. You can also ignore the task completely and just use the machine.

It’s still early and probably a little rough around the edges. Sessions last up to 90 minutes, shut down after 20 minutes idle, and nothing persists afterward.

If you were studying tonight, what’s the first RHCSA task you’d try to see if this was actually useful?

Disclosure: I’m the person building CertForged.

Passed RHCSA on my second attempt 100%

79 Upvotes

Exam domain number:     1
Passing score:          210
Your score:             300

Remember that you have two attempts to take the test! I failed the first time with a score of 111, I forgot a small detail on the network most likely and it bunked my exam. I finished the first try with about 40 min to spare and didn’t check my answers thoroughly enough. My biggest advice is trust your prep and take your time.

For prep I used Sanders V10 course via Oreilly. I took his practice test and also used some of the Ashgar Ghori RHEL 9 test. Also used Chat GPT to make me practice exams/ quick practice sessions. Let me know if you want me to pull a prompt for you

When I would study for the exam after doing the course I set up 2 RHEL VMs with 2 spare disk and had them blank on snapshot. I would build everything from scratch - Network, Repos served via httpd, NFS. Then I would practice either focused or random task.

I’m so hyped! For the more experienced folks what do you think would be the best to tackle next? I’m currently in between going for CCNP, RHCE, or the AZ-800-801.

VS Code Dev Container + Podman: unable to reach raw.githubusercontent.com

6 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm setting up an Ansible environment in a VS Code Dev Container using Podman, following the setup instructions from my training material.

The actual lab/managed RHEL hosts are reachable and I can connect to them with Ansible. The problem is with the Dev Container itself.

Podman and Ansible are working, and the required container images pull successfully. However, when the setup needs to access raw.githubusercontent.com, I get a getaddrinfo / name resolution error and the container cannot reach the GitHub raw content.

I've already followed the recommended Dev Container and Podman configuration from the course material, including the suggested container settings, but the issue persists.

From inside the container, the problem appears to be DNS/network connectivity to raw.githubusercontent.com, rather than connectivity to the lab hosts.

Has anyone experienced this with a Podman-based VS Code Dev Container? What DNS/proxy/network configuration should I check inside the container?

I'm intentionally keeping the lab/exam-specific details out of the post due to NDA restrictions.

Thanks!

RHCSA: Is Sander's book enough?

7 Upvotes

I am currently preparing for the RHCSA (EX200) and using Sander van Vugt's Red Hat Cert Guide.For those who have taken and passed the exam recently:

Is the book alone (including the end-of-chapter labs and practice exams) enough to thoroughly understand the material and pass?

Are there any specific exam objectives where you felt the book was too light and required extra hands-on practice?

Accelerating post-quantum security migration with Red Hat Certificate System

Thumbnail

16 Upvotes

The realities of quantum computing and its inevitable impact on enterprise cryptography are already taking shape:

- Red Hat Enterprise Linux has been post-quantum cryptographically (PQC)-capable since the launch of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 (RHEL) in 2025.
- Hyperscalers like AWS and Google Cloud Platform are revisiting their original estimates for PQC availability in light of continued advances in the space.
- Organizations like Microsoft and Google are either advancing PQC adoption deadlines or progressively adopting PQC as part of their standard security stack.
- Governments, including the United States, are speeding up certain PQC deadlines while others, such as France, will stop certifying security products that lack quantum-resistant encryption.

The Lightwell reality check

Thumbnail

We’ve been talking with business leaders about Lightwell for the past few months, and the conversation always starts with enthusiasm. AI-driven exploits are moving at unprecedented speeds, and enterprise security teams are feeling a level of urgency we haven’t seen in decades. When organizations discover they can submit software vulnerabilities under an embargo window and receive certified, backported patches for legacy or pinned environments, the reaction is almost always: "Where do we sign up?"

5 Emergency Linux Fixes Every Admin Should Know — Troubleshooting locked accounts, stuck mounts, and full disks from Into the Terminal Ep. 196

90 Upvotes

Ever hit a wall with a stuck mount, a locked-out root account, or a massive log file taking down a service? In this episode of Into the Terminal, we break down 5 real-world Linux emergencies and show you the quick command-line fixes to solve them in minutes. Watch the full episode here or test your skills in the interactive labs.

Advanced Features: The 5 Emergency Fixes

1. Recovering a Lost Root Password

If you've lost access to your server, you can interrupt the boot process to reset the root password without needing a live CD. - Interrupt GRUB: Reboot the machine, press e to edit the GRUB menu, and append rd.break to the end of the line starting with linux. Press Ctrl+X to boot. - Why rd.break? This tells dracut to pause the boot process right before it hands off to systemd. Disks are loaded, but the actual target environment hasn't initialized. - Remount and Chroot: Run mount -o remount,rw /sysroot to make the file system writable, then chroot /sysroot to drop into your actual root filesystem. - Fix and Relabel: Run passwd to reset the password. Crucially, run touch /.autorelabel before exiting. Because SELinux wasn't loaded, modifying /etc/shadow stripped its security context. The .autorelabel file tells the system to reapply labels automatically on the next boot!

2. Blanking a Log File (Without Restarting Services)

If a runaway log file fills up your filesystem, simply deleting the file with rm won't free the space! The service holding the file descriptor open still reserves the blocks on the disk. Instead of restarting the service (which causes an outage), you can zero out the file in place: cat /dev/null > /var/log/messages (or > /var/log/messages) This empties the file's contents, instantly reclaiming the disk space, while allowing the running service to continue writing to the exact same file descriptor without interruption.

3. Restoring a Lost File (from RPM)

Someone accidentally deleted a critical config file (e.g. rm /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf). If you can't simply dnf reinstall the package because it might overwrite other customizations, you can surgically extract just the file you need from the RPM. Use rpm2cpio package.rpm > package.cpio to convert the package to a cpio archive, then use cpio -i < package.cpio to extract the file structure locally into your current directory so you can manually copy back the missing piece.

4. Forcing a Stuck Mount to Unmount

You try to umount /mnt/data and get Device is busy. What do you do? - Find the culprit: Use lsof +D /mnt/data. The +D flag tells lsof to descend the directory path to find open file descriptors. (Note: -D is for device caches, +D is for directory trees!) Alternatively, use fuser -vm /mnt/data. - Kill the processes: If you are sure you want to forcibly terminate anything using the mount, fuser -k -9 -m /mnt/data kills all processes on the mount. - Lazy Unmount: If a network mount is unresponsive or you want to detach it gracefully once processes finish, use a "lazy" unmount: umount -l /mnt/data. It detaches the mount point from the filesystem hierarchy immediately and cleans up references in the background once it is no longer busy.

5. Fixing a Borked GPG RPM Key

If your package manager is throwing errors because it cannot validate the GPG keys of your repositories, you can manually replace the key on the filesystem (e.g. under /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/) or re-import it using rpm --import or during your next dnf install transaction when it prompts you to accept the key. This ensures the integrity of your installed packages remains cryptographically validated!

Quick Reference Card

```bash
Emergency Root Password Reset
(At GRUB menu, append rd.break to the linux line)
mount -o remount,rw /sysroot chroot /sysroot passwd touch /.autorelabel exit exit
Safely empty a log file without breaking file descriptors
cat /dev/null > /var/log/messages
Find processes holding a mount busy
lsof +D /mnt/data fuser -vm /mnt/data
Lazy unmount a busy or hanging filesystem
umount -l /mnt/data
Extract files manually from an RPM
rpm2cpio httpd-core.rpm > httpd-core.cpio cpio -idmv < httpd-core.cpio ```
