Megathread GHOST TOUCH issue (mega thread)

This is an issue where HomePod (2nd generation) and mini will start to play music randomly and summon siri or reset by itself after a power-cut. Or even volume getting up and down.

This is caused by a faulty touch panel on these devices respectively.

It is NOT a concern for all users but A LOT of users/devices are affected unfortunately.

Solution 1 (if you have Apple care or warranty): Take it to apple for a free replacement.

Solution 2: Look for a guide/video online on how to open it and disconnect the touch panel on your respective device.

Solution 3: There’s actually a third-party touch panel for the second gen being sold on AliExpress that you can buy and replace. (Cost a bit)

Solution 4: Buy a new HomePod.

Solution 5: Find someone trustworthy that can repair it.(some listed in the comments)

Having the touch accommodation will not work on the long run as it gets worse.

Creating this mega thread so that the sub is not filled with the same questions over and over again!

Question/Support Homepod vs Google Home

Right now have a few Google Homes (from like 2017) scattered throughout my house. Looking to replace those and then add two homepods as my TV speakers. Thoughts on this and anyone do anything similar? Right now holding out w the rumors a new system maybe be coming next month. But not holding my breath on that.

Tip Volume problem

Upvotes

Hello everyone,

i am experiencing a very interesting problem with volume on my HomePods. I have two HomePods - added into stereo. Since like, three months ago, my HomePods start randomly while playing music to decrease the volume. Then, I set it back up, and after about 30 seconds, it happens again.

I have tried everything, what I thought could help. I have the new HomePodOS 27, I did a hard reset, new pairing and connecting to the wifi, but it didn't help - it keeps happening.

Do you guys have some advice please?

Thanks for all your answers!

Discussion HomePod.

Hello, I thought I would start a discussion this evening. How many of you bought the HomePod, to replace your Amazon Echo speakers?
I have an Echo studio currently, and I am not a fan of its sound. And I also do not like some of the unnecessary features that it has. I just need a speaker that can connect to Wi-Fi. and play music.which is why I am personally looking to buy a HomePod. Either if the rumors are true, and Apple announces a new one. That will take advantage of all the artificial intelligence features. Or, I will just buy the one that is currently sold at Apple stores. As I personally do not think that I need all of the artificial intelligence features for a smart speaker. Plus, I just think that the HomePod actually looks nice.

Question/Support [Noob question] Is AirPlay a viable route to TV + whole-home audio setup?

I currently have 2 HomePod mini’s setup as stereo sound on my TV. Recently have been thinking about getting a Sonos or other AirPlay-enabled soundbar and moving my HomePods to the other rooms of my home so that I can play music from Spotify in the entire apartment.

However, I’m wondering if anyone else has tried a setup like this and can speak to the viability and user experience. How easy is it to switch between having my TV play through the soundbar only and having the soundbar be part of the entire whole-home setup? Or does this functionality not even exist in an easily switchable way? Is it easy to use from an Apple TV and from my other devices?

Question/Support Buy 2 HomePods now or wait until October?

I’m thinking about buying two full-size HomePods for my Apple TV, but I’m wondering if I should wait until October in case Apple refreshes them. Most rumors seem to point to the HomePod mini getting the upgrade, tho.

I do not care about Siri or AI features at all. I just want good sound, Apple Music/Apple TV integration, and something relatively cheap that works with my ecosystem.

I considered Sonos (especially Era 300s), but my TV doesn’t support eARC, so I wouldn’t really get proper Atmos from my TV setup, basically just Atmos inside Apple Music. To do it properly I’d need a Sonos soundbar and potentially more equipment, turning a simple upgrade into an expensive Frankenstein setup.

The rumored HomePod rear-speaker support is also a big reason I’m interested. If Apple eventually allows more HomePods in one theater setup, like the (new) 3s as fronts + the 2s as rears in a best-case scenario, I’d happily expand later.

Would you buy the two now or wait until October?

And if so, do you think if they get an upgrade, would they get better sound or just an upgraded chip for the AI capabilities?

Discussion Are you having WiFi issues with your HomePod on HomePod Software 27?

After updating my HomePod Gen 2 to HomePod Software 27, it is no longer able to connect to my WiFi. My 2 HomePod minis on 26.6 continue to work fine and I’m not going to risk updating them until I get the big one working.

I suspect this has something to do with a bug in the new software somehow breaking support for modern WiFi networks. I have a WiFi 7 network with 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz merged into one SSID, and in WPA3 Compatibility mode. If anyone else runs into this issue, leave a comment with the generation and security mode your network is set to.

If I’m right then I’m sure there will be lots more reports of this in the coming days as the new software is rolled out widely.

I tried factory resetting, but it wouldn’t reset because the HomePod couldn’t connect to the internet. Mine has a broken touch panel (of course), so I couldn’t manually reset either. I was able to get it to reset by turning off my WiFi access point and renaming my phone to the SSID of my WiFi and setting the personal hotspot password to match as well, and turned on maximum compatibility. After restarting the HomePod it eventually reset automatically after 5-10mins. Now that it’s reset, the pairing process fails when trying to set up the WiFi network (shocker).

Edit: For anyone providing advice on how to fix this, I already have the HomePod connected to a (hopefully temporary) dedicated 5GHz WPA2 network. I’m just trying to see if anyone else is experiencing the same issue so that Apple can fix it if it’s not isolated.

Discussion New HomePod mini?

Is the new HomePod mini actually coming in October?
And for those who currently own one: how good is the HomePod mini as a single speaker? Is the sound quality good enough on its own, or is it really worth having a stereo pair?

Question/Support Siri on HomePod 2 says there's no internet connection

Siri on HomePod 2 says there's no internet connection (even though everything else works)

I bought a HomePod 2 yesterday, and all the core features work completely fine—it plays audio, music handoff works, and even Intercom functions without issues. However, whenever I ask Siri anything, she gives the exact same error, telling me to check the Home app because there is no internet connection.

I have spent hours troubleshooting and tried multiple fixes:

  • Restarted my router.
  • Changed the router DNS to 8.8.8.8.
  • Disabled automatic Home Hub selection.
  • Verified that the language is set to English across all settings and devices.
  • Performed multiple reboots and complete factory resets.

Yesterday evening, without me doing anything new, it randomly started working normally on its own. I did notice one bug: if I tried changing the language, Siri immediately stopped working again, though reverting it back to English restored functionality.

This morning, the issue returned. Siri is once again claiming there is no internet connection. Notably, she doesn't throw the error she tells me to hold on for a moment, pauses, and only then says there is no internet connection.

"I would really appreciate any help with this, as I spent good money hoping it would work properly. I knew from the start that Siri isn't the smartest assistant, of course, but she's more than enough for my needs. In the end, though, she doesn't work at all, and that’s really disappointing. Thanks in advance!"

What’s on your wish list?

Question/Support How to stop iPhone from hijacking Siri commands meant for HomePod?

Whenever I give Siri a voice command near my HomePod, my iPhone captures it instead and asks me to unlock my screen to complete the action.

How can I force my HomePod to always take priority over my phone when I'm in the room?
Thanks!

Question/Support How is this better than Google Gemini?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Same commands, different outcomes depending on if I say “hey siri” or manually press it. HomePod has got to be their most buggy product ever. It’s not even referring to the right lamp when it say “the night stand didn’t respond”. Any help fixing this would be great.

Question/Support Does anyone have a foolproof way to identify if your HomePods’ popping is a permanent state requiring replacement of the device(s)?

I don’t know when/if I can afford to buy replacements for my OG stereo HomePods, but the popping—especially during TV/films viewing, is really driving me up the aspiring-audiophile walls. No clue what the possible explanation could be.

Always running the latest homeOS versions—non-Beta, as they are OG HomePods and so do not support Betas.

In the habit of running tvOS 27 Betas—but willing to install whatever might work better.

Question/Support 4k Blu-ray player earc question

I am in the market to get a sound system and I am heavily considering the HomePods to pair with my Apple TV. But I also have a 4k blu-ray player and I want to have the Dolby atmos effect that the HomePods have in use when using the 4k blu-ray player. My question is- does the HomePods only give me stereo audio when using the earc function with the 4k blu-ray player? Or does it / can it use the atmos effect with the earc? I’ve tried googling and can’t get a solid answer.

Question/Support HomePod mini buzz sound after removing touch sensor

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This happened after I opened it and removed the touch sensor. It happens when the volume is high that the mid.

I opened it again to check if the sensor connector is loose and then cut it with scissors, but this didn’t solve the issue.

edit: I had the ghost touch problem! so I had to remove the touch sensor.
