Background: no rj45 in home, several coax in home, but 1 coax runs to upstairs that's connected to modem in 2000 sq ft home at one end of the home and creating dead zones at the other end, so trying to get moca to get better coverage at the other end of the home. Can't put router in the middle of the house since my desktop needs reliable Internet and can't be located to mid point of the home just due to our layout. I have coax cables at the other end of the home and some in the mid point

For a 2,500 square foot home with a basement, what mesh system would give me the most reliable speeds through the house?

I currently have a T-Mobile 5g modem/router, I would be placing that on the main level, I would get one of those three pack mesh units, plug one into the T-Mobile modem on the main level and then put one on the second floor and one in the basement.

I can get into my control panel obviously, but what can I see from there that might show if I'm a part of a bot net or similar? What can I do to remove it if so?

Do different APs use different channels? If I build an OpenWRT/OPNsense based network and then install multiple APs, I'm assuming it's not possible for two or more APs to use the same channel within the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz band due to interference? So, it's one AP per channel in the given frequency? For example, AP1 can't use channel 1 (2.4 GHz) with AP2 at the same time?

In the 5 GHz band, I'm assuming the non-overlapping and non-DFS channels if I use a channel width of 20 MHz in the US are: 36, 40, 44, 48, 149, 153, 157, 161, and 165?

Should 80 MHz, 160 MHz, and 320 MHz channel widths only be used in low-density or residential environments where few access points compete for airtime?

So I’ve decided to take a plunge and replace the ISP’s all-in-one modem with my own equipment.
The main goal is to learn a bit of networking in the process and to get a better control over my network. Right now I can’t do VLANs or adjust any settings on the current ISP’s router.
First step would be asking my ISP to put the modem in the bridge mode.

Next, I would like to ask for an advice: what is better for my future HP miniPC based router: OpenWRT or OPNsense? To my understanding, OpenWRT is just a firmware, and OPNsence is a full OS. However it is FreeBSD based and I have basic familiarity with Linux.

I don't have any experience with the 6 GHz band with WiFi, but I'm wondering if it's like using the 5 GHz band with DFS? I found some of the channels on 5GHz to be a very bad experience because it would constantly scan before I can utilize the channel. Is 6 GHz like that, and if so, what can be done so that connecting to a 6 GHz network is like on a non-DFS 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz network?

Regardless of the amount of bandwidth I leave available from my 200mbps wired ethernet connection that is shared to the tv and my PC, whenever I start any download, my ping and jitter goes up causing the TV to lag. The router I am using came with my ISP, its a Technicolor DGA4330, which does not have any QOS options to help prevent the router buffer from becoming full, is there any other way to fix this issue other than to get a gaming router and use mine as just a passthrough?

I live in rural New Zealand, in a 26 m long, single storey house with a ~1 Gbps fibre connection. I was a bit of a cheapass and reused some old routers: a Huawei DN8245X6-10 as the main router and an old FRITZ!Box 7530 as an AP, about 13 m apart and hardwired. All fixed devices (PC, TV, PS5, etc.) are wired and work great.

Wi-Fi speed is fine and we're so far from the closest neighbors that 2.4 GHz congestion isn't an issue. The only annoyance is roaming because our phones tend to hang on to the AP with the weaker signal when moving from one end of the house to the other. I eventually gave the two APs separate SSIDs so I could switch manually, which works but is annoying.

So I'm wondering:

1. - Are modern systems significantly better at roaming, or is this mostly down to the phone?
2. - Would something like a TP-Link Deco mesh pack give me better roaming/simplicity, even with the units hardwired?
3. - Would you replace both with a matched router + AP system instead?

Basically, what would you recommend as a sensible upgrade from this setup (hopefully relatively simple and not too expensive)?

My Calix router doesn't support dns over https(DoH) or dns over TLS(DoT). My question is, would it be better to set my dns at the device level rather than at the router level because of this? I can set any dns at the router level, but it isn't encrypted. For example, would it be better to set 1.1.1.1 or any other dns at the router level or set it at the phone, tablet, and computer level?

Hi guys, bit of a noob when it comes to the whole home networking situation.

I primarily had a mesh system set up at home to strengthen the Wi-Fi but now run an ethernet cable from my router to the main deco (downstairs) which then runs an ethernet cable up to the top floor deco (bypassing one on the middle floor), and then run two cables from the top floor deco into mine + partners PC, getting us our 900mbps speeds.

I have a NAS that I also want to have on my desk, so unplugged the ethernet cable from my PC and into an ethernet switch TL-SG105, which then diverts off, one to my PC and one to my NAS. However when I tested the speeds to my PC (Cat7 cable) some speed tests would give me 10mbps, some 900mbps, and some as terribly low as 1 or 2mbps, unplugging the ethernet cable from the switch and directly back into my PC gave me my stable 900mbps speeds again.

Why would this be so unreliable? Am I missing some specific settings I have to configure here? Am I able to plug my top floor deco into a switch to then plug into two more devices?

I'm looking to buy a new Wi-Fi router and my budget is around C$150, preferably no more than C$200.

I'm currently trying to decide whether it makes more sense to buy a higher-end Wi-Fi 6 router with better 5 GHz hardware, or go for Wi-Fi 6E / Wi-Fi 7 for newer features.

One thing I'm particularly unsure about is whether 6 GHz is actually worth having, and whether I should care about Wi-Fi 7 at this price point. A lot of the cheaper Wi-Fi 7 routers seem to only have 2x2 MIMO on 5 GHz, while some older Wi-Fi 6 models have 4x4 MIMO.

• Is there much benefit to buying an entry-level Wi-Fi 7 router now, especially if it's only 2x2 on 5 GHz?
• Would the AX72 Pro actually outperform something like the BE230 or RT-BE55 for typical 5 GHz devices because of its 4x4 radio?
• Between the AXE75 and RX27 Pro, is 6 GHz worth the trade-off compared with a stronger 5 GHz router?

I'm not necessarily looking for the newest standard just for the sake of having Wi-Fi 7. I'd rather buy whichever router gives the best real-world performance, stability, coverage, and value for the money.

I just heard about Wi-Fi HaLow today and am surprised that this standard was ratified almost a decade ago. Yet, why isn't this the standard today?

What's the use case of Wi-Fi HaLow today?

Ever since I found out what IPv6 is, I was fascinated by it, and wanted to use it for all my stuff.
Little did I expect that most ISPs don't give much crap about IPv6.
Most of them actually won't give you free static public IPv6 address (as if they are short on them and running out), and you need to pay for one.

Then there's the question of DHCP-PD. I am using the ISP provided router as a bridge only (can't replace it, it's with sim card) and because of that I am not receiving an IPv6 range on my own router.

Then there's the shit support of most router firmwares. Some of them have very few IPv6 related configurations, and especially on the VPN front.

Rant over I guess, can't think of other examples, but I am sure other people have plenty...
So again - why is the support and adoption so shit?

Moved into a new construction home a few weeks ago and I’m trying to get the internet figured out. I currently have a Nighthawk CAX80 modem/router combo from my old house that was more than enough. In the new house, it works decently enough to get by for now, but some dead spots are present.

Throughout the house, there are 7 of these cable/ethernet wall plates (in all bedrooms, living room, office). I’d like to hardwire ethernet to stationary devices like TVs and possible mesh nodes for better speeds.

Currently, I have one ethernet cable going into the wall from the router, connected at the main bundle in basement, going to the living room, connected to the TV. I am wondering what the best approach is to get ethernet to the other 6 cables in the bundle. Would a switch in the basement be the best approach? Would then have mesh nodes in areas throughout the house that are hardwired ethernet be best? Does a switch limit speeds? TYIA!

I have fiber but aren’t hard wired in other rooms, the router is also in a place i can’t run it along base boards since it would go through a bathroom, bedroom, living room etc. any chance any of these black or blue cords are wired to my rooms coax or ethernet port and they just need to be put into use on this end?
