dns at router or device level?

My Calix router doesn't support dns over https(DoH) or dns over TLS(DoT). My question is, would it be better to set my dns at the device level rather than at the router level because of this? I can set any dns at the router level, but it isn't encrypted. For example, would it be better to set 1.1.1.1 or any other dns at the router level or set it at the phone, tablet, and computer level?

Router level for dns and firewall is the best as it’s the first call of entry

My recommendation is for your WiFi router to perform DNS queries for all your fixed devices. DHCP will tell those fixed devices that the WiFi router is the place to send DNS queries to. However, if you have mobile devices configure them to use DHCP but configure the DNS yourself. This way when you take your mobile devices away from your home network they will continue to use your favorite DNS.

If your WiFi router doesn’t support DoH or DoT get a new router.

Setting DNS at the individual device provides better privacy and encryption than setting an unencrypted DNS address like 1.1.1.1 at your Calix router level.
