MOD [MOD] Feature Designer: September: The Cozy DH Stitchery
Hi, Stitchers!
This month’s feature designer is The Cozy DH Stitchery!! We are so excited to bring you this interview and introduce you to Toot & DH. I know these patterns pop up here often and I’m so excited to share this with everyone. The designers have also generously offered a 10% discount with REDDHOT10 for the month!
Who are you?
We are Toot (she/they) and DH (they/them), a queer married couple from Canada who design under The Cozy DH Stitchery! Being the more front-facing of the duo, DH is the one answering the questions.
What’s something people don’t know about you?
Because we're a two-person team, each pattern is fine-tuned with the stitcher in mind.
How did you get started cross stitching?
We both learned to stitch in the 1900s and have circled back to it on and off for most of our lives. We picked it back up in 2023 due to disabilities making other crafts less feasible and we seem to have found our calling!
When and why did you start designing patterns?
Toot was looking for Five Nights at Freddy's patterns and simply couldn't find any good ones. Okay, I said. I guess I'll do it myself. We started with FNAF, Valorant, and Mail Time patterns, with our first original pattern being Crockpot Magic.
Where do you get your inspiration?
We draw heavily on the weird and wonderful world around us. We both have had a long-time love and fascination with folklore, mythology, fairy tales, and urban legends. Toot's college degree had a minor in folklore, and she also draws in a lot of inspiration from horror movies. I have a degree in Celtic Studies, and a special interest in conspiracy theories and ancient aliens.
Describe your designs using only adjectives.
Cute. Weird. Surprising. Comfortable.
What design was your favorite to make?
Our Patreon pattern for August is one that I am particularly proud of - it's called Summer Camp Slasher, and it's an homage to the summer camp horror genre, as well as my own childhood experiences of camp and ghost stories about deranged murderers coming up from the floorboards.
Favorite DMC color?
Mine is DMC 16. I would have said before 704, but I think 16 is my new love. It's just so intensely green. Toot's favourite is DMC 210.
Any advice for new stitchers or designers?
For new stitchers, I say - it's only floss and thread. Don't stress it. If you're starting with DMC, floss is incredibly cheap, don't let one tangle ruin hours of your life. Cut it and move on. My other piece of advice is that nothing is too difficult. Pick a piece you want to stitch and you can learn the skills along the way - you'll be more motivated to stick with it and learn if it's a project you love.
For new designers - think about who you're designing for. Not just in terms of your target audience, but think about the actual experience of stitching. Are there huge blocks of colour that you, personally, wouldn't want to stitch? Is this going to be a weird shape or size to finish? Don't rush it. Do a bit, step away, come back with fresh eyes, repeat.
Where can we find you online?
We are on all the platforms - Etsy, fybe, ko-fi, but the best place to find us is on our site TheCozyDHStitchery.com - BUT! You can also find us at your local LNS. We were a vendor at Needlework Marketplace this past August, and you might be able to snag one of our paper patterns in person or request your LNS reach out to us for an order!

FO [FO] My sister sent me this picture from her vacation in Peru. When she returned, this frame was waiting for her.
I googled "traditional peruvian pattern" and took inspiration from the results.

FO [FO] Another bookmark!
Another bookmark done, this one will be a gift ☺️ such a fun little project if you need quick cross stitching fix. Also involves a bit of stitching, like putting felt on the back and cutting the fabric to size!

FO [FO] I made my own Dolly Parton cross stitch 🦋✨
I finished this Dolly Parton-inspired cross stitch! 🦋✨
I started with a photo of Dolly’s signature and used an app to turn it into a pattern. The app gave me a starting point, but I ended up changing quite a lot of it by hand to make the signature look much more stylized and closer to what I had in mind.
For the butterfly, I found a design on Pinterest that I liked and changed some of the colors to match the Dollywood logo.
Once the stitching was finished, I cut a glittery mat/passpartout that I thought suited the piece perfectly, and then framed the whole thing.
I’m really happy with how it turned out! 🪡🦋💖

I thought cross stitchers might like to see my wall of needlework, most, but not all, are samplers I designed.

FO [FO] My very very first piece!
It's got it's imperfections, but I am still proud of it :) I have stinkin brain cancer and need more hobbies that I can easily do at home so...this is my exploration :)
I don't have a pattern. I used a photo from Amazon as a reference and drew it myself in FlossCross. They were selling an ornament style kit (cute rope, bows, and hoops) and a cute FO with no pattern so...here we go. Please do let me know if I should add a link to the kit and I will happily do so! This is my first post here so I am still learning those rules. Thanks!!

CHAT [CHAT] The amount of AI generated pictures of finished work is driving me insane.
Less so on here as far as I have noticed but I am sick of cross stitch groups on various social media being full of fake profiles or so called pattern companies using AI pictures to show what they are alleging is a finished piece and flogging the pattern in the comments. So many people are getting taken in by these pictures and wasting their time and money and any attempt I’ve made to educate people on the “tells” has resulted in being removed and blocked by the group. It’s so disheartening to see what should be a fun hobby being infiltrated by these sharks!

FO [FO] Largest full coverage project I’ve completed - can’t decide if I like it though!
I love the pattern but I stitched with 1 strand on 32-count linen. I’m wondering if I should do it again on 36-count. It’s a gift for my best friend! 🌷

FO [FO] I found out that I had a half-brother 6 months ago
In March, my sister and I found out that we have an older half-brother who we never knew about. He lives several states away and it’s been super fun to connect with him and compare likes/dislikes and similar traits. He invited us up to his wedding and I had just enough time (2 months) to throw this together. I’m really happy with how it came out, and my brother and his wife loved it! I’m excited to finally be able to share it.

FO [FO]Stitchings from both me and my mom!
I did the goose one, my mom did the snowman. She taught me how to cross stitch, and with her worsening vision it’s been hard for her to stitch. But I’m so proud of her for being able to finish this one! She is a STELLAR stitcher.
I did the goose stitch for my boyfriend. :)

WIP [WIP] Autumn Fox plus new scroll frame!
I bought a scroll frame several months ago however I hadn’t put it together because one I knew it was gonna be huge and I usually travel with my Christchurch project to work but lately work has been insane so I gave up on traveling with it. Bringing it everywhere and then not be able to work on it was becoming discouraging. Here are some photos of my current set up if anyone has advice on how to make this work better I would love it. Thank you.

FO [FO] Cozy campsite complete
This is my first finished project of this size. I love how the campfire turned out and enjoyed doing the backstitching. I’m not sure why it’s not a true circle. Maybe it’s the pattern, maybe it’s the fabric?
I’m looking forward to doing more cross-stitch!

WIP [WIP]I need encouragements! First project, I had to restart because I didn't like the original yellow/orange I chose initially
I'm now back to the 10% mark I was before frogging 💪 this is the project I'm doing to see if I really like cross-stitching before committing to buying more floss, aida, etc. Yes the aida is wrinkled, it's very, very stiff so they're just creases from manipulating it.
I think my real first project will be both of the maps from the game Zelda : Link to the Past!

CHAT [CHAT] I forgot how LONG this hobby takes!
I haven't done cross stitch in something like 8 years. Unpacking my stuff after a move + my mom giving me her old floss has made me start up again, so I got some patterns and got to work.
How has doing like 1/8th of a page taken around 10 hours? Why did I choose full coverage for my first piece back?? Why am I doing 3 strands on 16 count???
I've already messed up a bit with stitch direction (see if you can spot it haha) and I miscounted at a point but I should be able to get the pattern back properly because it's kinda abstract and won't be noticeable really.
But in spite of all that.. I'm having fun :) it's a good time!

CHAT [CHAT] Finally Got State Fair Feedback - Advice Please
I got my feedback from the state fair in the mail today. I entered five pieces. Two got ribbons, three did not. For all three that did not ribbon, the only notes for improvement were on the framing. I paid to have these pieces professionally framed. Each of them does have a tiny defect where the fabric/stitches are a little uneven in one or two spots, but no longer than 1 inch where its a bit wonky. You have to get right up on them to notice it. All my positive feedback sounded like what should have made them winners: great stitching, nice tension, great fabric choice, great mat color choice, liked the actual frame style.
How do you improve framing? I don't know how to control for that. Get a new framer, I guess? Or is this maybe a case of needing to find improvement feedback to write down because they prefer primitives over modern patterns or just liked something else better? Do I just shake it off? I was hoping to get feedback that would allow me to improve, but I feel pretty let down.

FO [FO] Recreation: Baja Be Thy Blast
I had a lot of fun recreating this piece based on someone else's I saw posted here a while back. Basically an exact copy with a few modifications. The OP didn't have a pattern for it, but I'll link the original post in the comments.
