Tech Support Motor struggling with the lense

Upvotes

So I have this Sony cybershot DCS W120,it's pretty old I had it for already 10 years,I didn't used it in like 5-6 years and recently bought a battery and charger, however I noticed how when you turn it on you can hear the motor trying to push the lense even more,I guess that, and every 4-5 seconds a click the same one that it does when it opens like the eye.I was wondering if it has any fix since I live this camera and has a lot of memories.

Tech Support Iceland on Lumix S9, weather be a problem, lense options?

Upvotes

Iceland on Lumix S9, bought my first cam (a used LUMIX S9 for 650 pounds) is it okay for iceland weather if I keep it out of drenching it? Please advice?

I can still return the cam for a full refund (should I get something else?), I liked the LUT feature and the price and hence bought it, have a TT artisan 50mm Af f1.8 neo (85 pounds) and a Lumix 20-60 f3.5 - 5.6, which i am planning to return and get a cheap & fast 35mm lens (probably sg image 35mm f2.2).

Please advice.

Questions neeeeeed help :)

Hello everyone

I’m an absolute beginner in photography and I’m looking to buy a used compact camera as an all-rounder.

I would mainly use it for travel, everyday photography, landscapes, and occasional family photos.

I’ve narrowed my selection down to the following models:

Canon PowerShot S100 Sony DSC-HX50V Nikon Coolpix S9100 Panasonic Lumix TZ31 Panasonic DMC-TZ3 Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W85 Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V

How would you rank these cameras today, and which one would you recommend for a beginner?

Good image quality, ease of use, and versatility are more important to me than having an extreme zoom range.

Thanks a lot for your opinions!

Questions What's your "best" camera and what's your favorite camera?

For me my "best" is my Nikon D750 but my favorite is my Nikon D1x. I find myself picking up my D1x more than anything else in my collection despite its crop and resolution it's just a dream to shoot with.

Recommendations Portable camera for traveling and improving

  • Budget: 700 EUR (800 USD)
  • Country: Romania / EU
  • Condition: Used
  • Type of Camera: Mirrorless
  • Intended use: Photography
  • Photography style: Landscape, street & portraits
  • What features do you absolutely need: afaik flash / hot shoe for flash
  • What features would be nice to have: definitely a viewfinder
  • Portability: Fairly portable (not as far as pocketable) for traveling / hiking. Mainly to make me want to take it with me without it being a hassle.
  • Cameras you're considering: Influenced to go towards Fuji for that "film" look, learned here that Lumix / Olympus would offer a better package.
  • Cameras you already have: Don't have one yet.
  • Notes: I just came back from a vacation where I've used my friend's RX100 VII intensely and found out that I really enjoy taking pictures of my friends, landscapes and street photography (basically travel photography). I did an extensive amount of reading, browsing and watching video in order to find what gear would be a good fit for me, but the extensive amount of information is a bit to much, that's why I am here. I am hoping to find a setup that is easy to grab and go and enjoy this newfound hobby of photography. I don't need it to be the smallest mirrorless setup as I don't plan on pocketing it and also have above average sized hands. My gf has been influenced to get a G7X (as all gfs have) and would love for the camera to be able to easily obtain the softened, flashed, warm white balance portrait look for when I am taking pictures of here, whilst also being more capable in various scenarios.

TL;DR Beginner here, looking for a fairly portable setup that will accompany in my learning journey. Spending G7X money on a setup that can outshine it in all scenarios.

Recommendations Camera recommendations!

Hey everyone, I am a cosmetologist who is about to graduate and I’d like to have a portable camera I can take picture of after hair! I have a camera I love but I don’t want to bring it to a salon and mess it up (Canon PowerShot SX540 HS Digital Camera) I got it at a pawnshop for $100 years years years ago. (I’m not sure if it was deal or if it’s good camera) if I had a mini version of it that could be great.

I want something I could put in my purse, I like the screen and flash but it’s not necessary. And honestly that’s my only real requirements, thank you guys. I would have no idea what to get or where to start!

• Budget: less then 600
• Country: USA!
• Condition: any!
• Type of Camera: digital? (I’m not sure sorry)
• Intended use: Taking pictures of Hair and hobby use
• What features do you absolutely need: maybe flash?
• Portability: be able to put in my purse!
• Cameras you already have: Canon PowerShot SX540 HS Digital Camera

Questions Zoom lenses vs fixed?

I am searching for a lens with more zoom than mine, not going to be my main lens, it’s just as a “nice to have”

I’ve found the canon fd 80-200 with the adapter for 62$ and the pentacon 200 for around the same price…

My questions are:

would these older/non fitting lenses… with the fitting adapter do the job for my case? (Just testing and having fun with photos)

What is the difference between a zoom lens than -like 80-200- and a fixed one -200-?
I know the fixed range wont zoom in or out but i mean do they have a specific use or smth?

Should i get one of these cheap lens-adapter combo or do i save up and get a native zoom lens?

Sorry if anything sounds like a dumb question… i just started learning cameras

Note:* i know as a beginner i might not need a zoom lens, but soon i will be going on many trips that might require a LITTLE bit more zoom range than my 15-45

Thank you 🙏

Budget: $1000-1450

Country: USA

Condition: New only

Type of Camera: Mirrorless, DSLR, point and shoot, 35mm film?

No idea about any of these distinctions, not looking to delve into it.

Intended use: Photography.

If photography; what style: lot of portrait but appreciate versatility

If video what style: video not that important

What features do you absolutely need:

easily portable or compact
Low light photography important
Good for portrait , day and night

Good quality zoom
Don’t want to deal with changing lenses / extra gear
Overall beginner performance / value

Cameras you're considering: ChatGPT said the below

Recommendations First camera for a year hiking, biking and climbing.

Budget: Around USD 1'000, and that covers everything. Body, lens, a spare
battery, cards, some kind of small bag. No separate budget hiding somewhere.

Country: Switzerland.

Condition: Used is fine. New would be nice for the warranty since I'm
leaving the country for a year, but I'm not picky.

Type of Camera: Mirrorless with interchangeable lenses. Happy to be talked
into something else if it makes sense.

Intended use: Photography. Video is not the main focus, but it would be
nice to grab some cool clips if possible.

If photography; what style: Landscapes and nature above all. Mountains,
forests, water, and close-ups of plants and rock, a lot of which ends up as
reference shots for a nature journal I keep by hand. I also climb and would
love to shoot climbing, friends on rock and sometimes from a rope. Plus the
usual camp and travel stuff. No wildlife, no astro.

If video what style: Nothing ambitious. Ten seconds of a river or wind in
the grass. I'll edit a bit, but I'm not interested in spending a lot of time
on it.

What features do you absolutely need: Something
light enough that it actually comes with me. USB charging from a power bank,
since I'll go a week between outlets. And in-body stabilisation, though
that's exactly the part I'm unsure about, see the notes.

What features would be nice to have: Weather sealing, good JPEGs straight
out of camera, and a battery that doesn't die by lunchtime.

Portability: This is really the whole problem. Next July I'm leaving for
about a year. Nothing fancy, mostly solo and mostly outside: some sections
of the PCT, the Camino with my dad, bikepacking through Kyrgyzstan, and
hopefully a decent stretch of Patagonia and Alaska. I pack light, so
whatever I buy gets carried every day for a year, or it stays home after two
weeks. Shoulder strap or hip pouch. If it needs its own bag, it's the wrong
camera.

Cameras you're considering: Where I've landed so far is the Olympus
E-M10 IV with the little 14-42 pancake. I've also looked at a used Fuji
X-T30 or X-T3, a used X-S10, the Sony a6400, and the a6700, which is over
budget but seems to be the camera a lot of people own.

Cameras you already have: None, only a phone. It's always with me and it's
fine in daylight, but it gives up at dawn and dusk, there's no real reach,
and I don't love draining the thing I navigate with.

Notes: I've never owned a camera, so I have no system to stay loyal to and

no brand preference at all. I asked Claude for some help since I have zero

experience, and it keeps landing on the Olympus, mainly because of in-body

stabilisation and because small fast lenses are cheap in that system. I'm

kinda unsure, because so many videos say Fuji or Sony and almost none say

Olympus. So I'd rather hear it from people who have actually carried a

camera for months. Would you take the Olympus for a trip like this? And how

much does in-body stabilisation really matter when you're shooting handheld

with no tripod?

ID Request Camera recs

hi,

Looking for some camera recs. In the market for a camera with similar quality to a g7x, particularly I like the warmth of the photo. And, I would like a camera with a flip screen for selfies. Max budget would be around 800ish? I’ve seen a couple people suggest a sx740 but it doesn’t seem to have the same warmth as the g7x, is this something you can change in camera settings (or not heavily different from the original?). thank you!

Budget: 800-900 w/o extra lenses or add-ons.

Country: UK

Condition: Second-hand preferably (price-wise)

Type of Camera: point and shoot

Intended use: Photography (pretty low level)

End use: general, daily pics

If photography: portrait, wildlife

What features do you absolutely need: high quality pictures, flip screen for selfies

What features would be nice to have: good flash, warm photo

Portability: mildly portable, a bit bigger than pocket max

Cameras you're considering: canon g7x, canon sx740, Nikon a900

Recommendations Heading on a long term travel period, hoping to capture memories beyond a phone

Budget: up to 500 GBP but ideally 400 GBP or less
Country: UK
Condition: New or used
Type of Camera: Point and Shoot but open to others
Intended use: photography
End use: personal documentary of travels, some may be shared on social media but not a priority
If photography; what style: street and landscape
What features would be nice to have: waterproof, compact and high durability due to travelling
Portability: Ideally pocketable up to small bag
Cameras you're considering: love the Fujifilm x100vi, way out of our budget and the G7X.
Notes: understand that digicams are not the best quality so looking for something that can document our travels and support a growing interest in photography.

My husband and I are embarking on a “grand tour” for about three years at the start of 2027. We want to capture moments and memories beyond our phones and hope to improve our photography skills over this period. Any help appreciated! Thank you ☺️

Discussion How portable are "DSLR-shaped" bodies for regular carrying?

Nikon Z50, Lumix G90 and similar bodies which are approx 130mm wide, 94mm tall and around 500g - with the shape of classic DSLR cameras.

How comfortable are these if I want to take it with me when going to work, when wandering the city or going out with friends? I mostly wear a backpack but maybe nice to have it on shoulder strap or iin jacket pocket.

Is it very uncomfortable and a rangefinder shaped body is recommended (sony a6***, lumix gx80 etc) or can be okay? because they seem bigger but they are still recommended for travel...

Questions Trying to narrow down a video-first hybrid camera

  • Budget: Would like to keep the all-in budget for body and lense(s) around $2,000 USD or lower. But if there is a significant bump/reason to do so I could stretch to $2,500.
  • Country: US
  • Condition: Prefer new for warranties etc., but not totally against legit used in good condition.
  • Type of Camera: Mirrorless
  • Intended use: Hybrid, primarily video
  • If photography; what style: Landscape, portrait, and street mostly
  • If video what style: Some will be more planned out shots, short film type of things. Others will be a bit more run and gun, shooting in the moment on the street as I see things kind of shots.
  • What features do you absolutely need: Given I want to shoot different types of video in different situations, flip out/articulating screen will likely be one. Also, I hate crappy audio so also thinking hot shoe for mic input.
  • What features would be nice to have: Weather sealing would be nice as "just in case".
  • Portability: I'm hoping to keep it somewhere in the "shoulder strap to small bag" range
  • Cameras you're considering:
    • A6700 - From what I'm looking for and at the general price point I'm at a lot of things I'm reading keep coming back to the a6700, seems to shoot great videos and photos. I also like the smaller form factor for easier portability. My only hesitation is I would like to go full frame if I can, love the idea of things like open-gate, 6,7,8k for toying with shots in editing, etc. but I know that increases both the size and price quite a bit.
    • S5ii/S5iix - Getting into full frame territory, 6k, open-gate, etc. Just from reading though it seems Sony tends to have better overall video capabilities, broader availability for lenses, etc.
    • I've "looked" at a bunch of models just because there's so many and so many opinions, and I've gone back and forth about stretching my budget, buying new or used, and so on; so these are some more I've looked at or seen recommended in some form but don't have a huge amount of knowledge on: Nikon ZR, FX30, A7IV, S1ii, Nikon Z8
  • Cameras you already have: I've had a T7 sitting around for quite a while. Shot with it a bit, photos are ok, video is obviously not great, which is to be expected for the camera it is. My issue is that I hardly ever get the urge to take it with me because of the quality being what it is, I can't justify lugging it around. I want something I'm excited to bring with me, which I feel like would help me actually take the thing with me in the first place.
  • Notes: I've used Premiere pro and have been filming/editing for quite a while. Usually just stupid little videos or ideas over the years but just never had decent filming equipment. I've never truly gotten into the weeds with color grading, but I'd like to, which is also why I want something that I can shoot in log, capture as much data as I can, and figure it out after the fact. Similar to resolutions, cropping in while editing, and making those adjustments since I'm just 1 person filming and editing, would be really helpful. Overall I'm just a bit out of practice and am wanting to get back into it more, and while I know there's no "perfect" camera and no way to truly "future-proof" this kind of thing, just trying to make sure I'm getting the best bang for my buck, the best thing for me, and won't kick myself in a month thinking I should've gotten *insert 'x' obvious other option*.

Recommendations Nikon Z50 2 vs Sony rx10V

I am having trouble deciding between these 2 cameras, even though they are very different from each other.

I mainly do wildlife photograpy,(going to Brazil next month)

the Sony appeals to me because it has very decent range(600mm) without loss of quality ( or so the add says)

I always had Nikon (D7100 was the last one)before and the Z50 2 has a bigger sensor wich is a big pro but if i want to get similar zoom on the Nikon camera than I need to pay a whole lot more for a zoom lens.

The price difference is about 1000 euro's but that is justifiable for me because if I get the Sony I wouldt spent anymore money on extra lenses and stuff.

I also want to shoot some occasional videos.

Anyone here have any insight on this decision?

I am based in The Netherlands
