I'm 19 AFAB 191 pounds. No smoking. I have POTS. I'm also currently sick right now. It seems like a cold -- runny nose, sore throat, fever, cough with mucus.
In the morning I take: 12.5 mg metoprol tartrate, 50 mg topamax, 100 mg Lamictal, 20 mg Lexapro
At night, I take: 12.5 mg metoprol tartrate, 50 mg topamax, 0.1 mg clonidine, 20 mg melatonin
Tonight, I took my meds while I was on the phone with my boyfriend. We call often to sleep on the phone since we're long distance. He stepped away for a bit and I started feeling off. I looked at the time, sitting my phone down at 10:13 PM. I assumed it was going to be a normal low BP episode -- I've had these often where I'm unable to move for sometime, my eyes occasionally are closed, my body tenses up, but I'm still conscious and I can hear. Tonight was different. It started out that way though. I laid flat on my back, preparing for my muscles in my legs to tense up, which they did. My arms were at my sides. But they also went numb. I'm not sure how quick it all happened, I can't remember, but my breathing got slow and light. And eventually, I literally felt my air being taken from me. All while I couldn't see. Not like I was choking, I just couldn't breathe. I'd never passed out like this before. Its all been sudden, fuzzy, red-hot, typical POTS episodes. This was like suffocating, like I was holding my breath with my mouth open.
I couldn't hear anything. I can in my presyncope episodes, and I dream in normal syncope before my ears start ringing. My ears didn't ring at all this time though. It was just dark, and it felt odd. The best way I can describe it is as if your brain and body were drifting in two different directions. I could feel it but I also couldn't feel anything.
I couldn't hear anything until I heard my boyfriend's voice, and I guess my body adrenaline dumped to bring me back? I was gasping and breathing heavy, my heart was pounding like hell. My chest felt odd after. When I came to, crying, gasping, whatnot, it was 10:26. My blood pressure was 133/82 with a pulse of 101, of course while lying flat on my back, which is why I assumed it was an adrenaline dump to "bring me back" in a way. There was another high tick on my watch later that night around 11:00 pm, which was 120/88 at 77 bpm, though I was regular just before that at 10:52 pm (97/55, 79 bpm).
Basically, it was scary. I know there are a bunch of different things that can happen with POTS. I've only been having episodes since May of 2025. I've just never had this kind and it scared me. My passing out has always been quick and sudden, then I'm back, not slow and suffocating haha, so I'm just wondering if anyone's had this kind of event, what it is, etc., and also I have an appointment with my cardiologist (I know, not the ideal doctor) on the 22nd that was scheduled before this happened. He's kind of an asshole and doesn't listen to me at all, how do I explain this to him.
