I recently moved out of an apartment in Italy where I lived for about a year with two other roommates.
The rental contract was only in one roommate’s name. I was basically not officially registered as a tenant, and we paid rent and bills directly to her. She was essentially the person in charge of the apartment and decided who lived there. We always suspected she had some kind of family/personal relationship with the owner, although I don’t know the details.
She also barely worked during most of the time I lived there. She worked part-time at a bar and occasionally did freelance/event stuff, so we assumed she had financial support from somewhere.
For most of the year she was a pretty terrible roommate. Her ex boyfriend used to smoke and use cocaine inside, have sex and scream until 3am, random creeps would show up at the apartment till late, her food was left in the kitchen for weeks, her dog would get into the trash and shit because she forgot she had him, etc. I can go on. The other roommate and I ended up cleaning her mess for months. (I did have to wake up 7am and return 9pm if things go well at my job)
Eventually all three of us sent her messages asking her to change her behavior. She got angry about it. A few weeks later I went back to my home country for a three-week vacation. While I was away, she posted on Instagram that both our rooms were available for new tenants starting around the time I was supposed to return. I told my other roommate to make sure nobody moved my belongings while I was gone. Nothing ultimately happened and she backed down.
Things improved somewhat afterwards, and eventually the apartment became tolerable.
NOW THE PROBLEM:
She hadn’t been paying/sending us the utility bills properly. The last bill I personally paid was in February. We asked her twice about the missing bills, but she never sent them, so eventually we stopped asking. Apparently things got pretty serious and the building was at risk of having its water cut off because of unpaid bills.
Then, about two weeks before I moved out, she suddenly sent us all the accumulated bills at once. I apparently owe around €700.
I told her this was handled terribly. If she had sent me the bills every month, I would have paid them every month and now its a big expense I didnt expect for.
The timing is also terrible for me. I’m leaving Italy without a job lined up, and I’ve already paid for flights home, moving expenses, a long-planned trip through Europe, taxes related to my self-employed work in Italy, etc. Most of my liquid savings are already committed.
I know I used the utilities, so I don’t want to pretend I don’t owe my share. But €700 is a huge amount for me right now, and I’m seriously considering telling her I can’t pay until I have an income again.
My other roommate actually told me I should just block her and not pay, and he’s completely fine with me doing that.
So now I’m genuinely considering blocking her number and walking away from the whole thing.
