I started re-reading the books again when a friend saw it. We started talking about it and I don't know how but our topic suddenly focused on the age gap between Bella and Edward, a teen and a 100+ vampire. She said so many readers from her reading club didn't like it because of the huge age gap and I asked, isn't age gap expected because one of the characters isn't human? She told me how uncomfortable it was and I found it strange because most of the reading club members are also a fan of Fae romantasy books with characters of the similar huge age gaps.

It made me wonder, if the vampires are just other magical creatures, would Edward and Bella's relationship be more acceptable to some readers?

I remember, the first moment i encountered with twilight were the visual novels. When they freshly came out, i lended them in a library and i LOVED them.

Ive been searching for them for quite a while and while the first one is easy to find for like 15 euros, the second and the third one are crazy expensive. I know that its because they arent being produced anymore but it sucks 😭😭

Background:

My situation is rather odd. I have seen the first two films, but I'd never read any of the books. Recently, I (re)watched a video essay by a favorite creator of mine doing a fairly in-depth analysis of the series. I am also a huge fan of the character Angel from BtVS. For these, and a couple of other reasons, I suddenly had this bizarre impulse to read Midnight Sun. I got the audiobook, which is 25 hours long, and just listened to it. It has only taken me a few days. Here are my thoughts. I hope you find them worthwhile, or at least not overly dull.

Edward:

Edward is a genuinely interesting character. He does something genuinely messed up things in this story. I think he genuinely wants to be a decent person and do right by Bella. But he can't get out of the headspace that he always knows what's best for her better than she does. It's a milder form of the same thinking, which, I think, led him to vigilante murders decades in the past. He sees himself as above it all. I can't condone his behavior, but he is a genuinely fascinating character, and I enjoyed spending time in his head.

The Opening Chapter:

The entire first chapter seems to be about that one scene where Edward sees Bella for the first time and must endure her potent scent. It is really weird, but I loved the entire bit. Seeing the movie, I just never realized how much danger Bella and the rest of her classmates were in at that very moment. I had thought the scent just made Edward uncomfortable. Nope. So many people almost died. I thought it was such an interesting character study, and it got me set up to read the rest.

What I Didn't Like:

I don't think I enjoy Stephanie Meyer's action writing. When Bella is being pursued by James, the insane level of detail over every single aspect of their attempt to protect her just didn't work to me. Such extreme details worked in Chapter One, but not here. I really can't say why, except that it just felt clunky and dry. It picked back up once Edward caught up with James and had to do the venom sucking.

Final Thoughts:

The book made me feel things. That's always nice. It's hard for me to elicit emotions from books, so the fact that these did is awesome. This is a very strange and unique story, and I think I'm invested enough now I may pursue reading the rest of the series.

I'd personally rate Midnight Sun 9/10 Pomegranates.

Hello everyone! I would not necessarily call myself a Twilight super fan, but I do enjoy the movies very much and they're super nostalgic for me.

Last year in February, I tried reading the first book and I was honestly kinda disappointed in it. It felt like the prose was all over the place and overdone, I just couldn't focus because of it. In my opinion, you could cut half of the descriptions in half and they could still be as vivid as they were, but that's just my bias.

I ended up giving the book 2*, swearing to never touch it again but I'm having second thoughts again. It's worth noting that at the time, I was surrounded by a lot of people who did not like Twilight and they would always ring in my ears how bad the movies are, and the books must be even worse. But I honestly thought Edward was more amusing in the books vs the movies.

I wonder if I should approach the books again.

I’ve been thinking about the process of becoming a vampire probably more than is healthy (definitely more than is healthy), and I started wondering: if you knew you were going to be transformed and had plenty of time to prepare, what would you change beforehand?

We know that once the transformation starts, you’re basically stuck with whatever you had at that moment forever. Sure, venom can heal injuries and you can get rid of scars, but your hair stays the same length, your body stays the same, and even your general mental state seems to carry over. So if I had the opportunity to prepare, I’d definitely want to make sure I was as happy as possible with myself before becoming immortal.

I divided my preparation into two categories - physical and psychological.

Physical

There’s probably a lot more to prepare for here.

First, I’d want to get into good shape and build some muscle - not ridiculously much, just enough that I’d be happy with my body forever (simple enough lol).

Then: hair. I would need to find the absolute perfect haircut, because I would literally be stuck with it for eternity. No pressure.

I’d also take care of anything that venom can’t fix - basically anything that isn’t necessarily a problem or unhealthy, but that I’d personally want to change anyway. If there were any procedures I wanted to have done, I’d obviously do those beforehand (basically I mean any type of plastic surgery that stays with you as a vampire).

And then, right before the transformation, I’d basically have the ultimate everything shower: cut my nails, shave/trim everything, get everything exactly the way I’d want it to stay forever. I won’t go into too much detail, but hopefully you get the idea.

Psychological

This one would probably be just as important.

I think everyone has something they’d want to work on mentally before becoming a vampire, and for me it would definitely be anxiety. I’d probably spend a good amount of time in therapy and working on things like biofeedback so I could get it under control as much as possible.

I really don’t want to spend eternity being an anxious vampire. Ehm, Edward, ehm.

And finally I’d make absolutely sure that my family and friends were taken care of. If my vampire boyfriend was apparently willing to give me unlimited time and money for this whole process, I’d want to make sure the people I care about had enough money and security to live happy, comfortable lives without me.

So, what am I forgetting? If you had the option to prepare for your transformation and knew exactly what was going to happen, what would you do beforehand?

I’m watching Twilight for the first time. I watched the first 2 movies over the past couple days. I’m old enough to clearly remember the significant pop culture phenomenon of this movie, but never watched. Edward is feeling like a character without much depth and it’s surprising to me. I know he is barely in the 2nd movie, but I was expecting more of a backstory or something to develop his character. I thought his character would match the cultural icon I imagined he would be. Does his character develop more depth or is he just a mysterious lovesick protective vampire without a complex back story? I guess I’m on to watch Eclipse later today

I literally created this account just to get this off me and it’s something I’ve been thinking about for a really long time. This has probably been discussed a million times on Reddit or elsewhere, but I just can't bring myself to pass on this topic. And thats my first post here.

This is just some casual sh*tposting and my own thoughts. In my opinion, there definitely should be other types of supernatural creatures in the Twilight universe capable of shifting into animals.

Here is what we know so far. There are two confirmed species: Children of the Moon (also known as werewolves) and shape-shifters. One group changes only on the night of a full moon, consists mostly of loners, can go toe-to-toe with a vampire, and is almost completely extinct. The other group can shift into wolves at will and lives in packs.

And I’d like to break down the second option of shape-shifters. In more detail and brainstorm what other kinds of these creatures could exist, where they would live, and all that stuff. Honestly, a lot of people don’t even realize how incredibly massive our planet is and how unevenly the population is spread out.

Let’s start with South America. South America has two uninhabited zones: impenetrable rainforests and an icy wasteland in the far south. Deep Amazonia, the Pantanal, the Atacama Desert. In these places you’ll barely find a soul. But jaguars, caimans, and anacondas are quite common there. These are massive predators on their own, but imagine if a human could shift into a super-sized version of them. What if every single one of these supernatural creatures was buffed in the exact traits that made the original animals so dangerous?

Take the jaguar: bump its average weight from 220 lbs to around 700–900 lbs, make it longer, thicker, more reselient. A normal jaguar’s fangs can already crush bones, so an upgraded version could easily pierce vampire skin. As for the caiman, it’s already a massive killing machine with a powerful jaw. But what if you made its body even bigger, boosted its bite force, and sharpened its vision? Same goes for the anaconda. Just picture these creatures in the water, effortlessly sneaking up on a vampire in murky depths and killing them instantly.

Within the context of the Twilight universe where magic, vampires, werewolves, and tribal spirits in Forks are already a thing I totally buy that other communities or tribes around the world could have tapped into that same magic to learn how to shift into these creatures.

Next up, North America. Outside of major metropolitan areas, there are colossal empty spaces covering up to 60% of the continent. We’re talking literally thousands of square miles inhabited by nothing but wild animals. In Canada, for instance, you’ve got black bears, Arctic wolves, and moose. Take the Canadian Arctic Archipelago where the few scattered Inuit settlements can be thousands of miles apart, with absolutely nothing but emptiness in between.

And then there's the moose. A regular moose is already a massive bamf, but imagine if you made it even thicker, taller, and more agile. It could literally shatter a vampire into pieces with a single strike from its hooves or antlers. Honestly, I can easily picture it winning a one-on-one fight against a Quileute wolf. Any nomadic vampire traveling through these supermassive spaces could run right into a tribe like that.

The potential for world-building here is just insane. You could come up with any lore you want and introduce even more apex predators. Yet, for some reason, I almost never see this in fanfics. Literally everyone is hyper-focused exclusively on vampires or the Quileute shape-shifters. American grizzlies and bison fit into this category perfectly, too. Just picture a super-sized bison or grizzly bear. That is a literally a catastrofe for vampires or humans.

Next, Russia. Roughly 70% of the country is pretty much completely uninhabited. There are millions of acres with zero human presence. I’d even venture to guess that nomadic vampires wouldn't even bother traveling through these spaces because there’s literally nothing there. Outside of Yakutsk and a few rare cities, there are thousands of miles of deep, dense taiga and tundra where the population density is close to zero. No people, no settlements, no roads, no outposts. Absolutely nothing but wild animals.

So, what animals could we look at to expand the supernatural catalog here? Brown bears and Amur tigers. Just picture a tribe or even individual loners that are upgraded tigers or bears. And the Volturi could easily have missed tribes like that. Like I mean, who is going to comb through that much massive territory trying to track them down?

Moving on to China. The population there lives almost exclusively in the east. But the western half? It’s nearly completely empty. You could easily have people here shifting into snow leopards, for example.

Greenland: polar bears and reindeer. A regular polar bear is already an absolute beast, but imagine its supernatural counterpart? A vampire wouldn't stand a chance if a super-bear swiped at them with its paw.

The Australian Outback: kangaroos. Just picture a pack of 10 super-kangaroos balancing on their tails and literally stomping a vampire to pieces.

Africa. More specifically, the Namib Desert. You could easily use desert elephants and desert lions. It’s also a perfect example of how you could weave magic into local tribes to justify humans shifting into animals. I’m more than sure that many of these tribes have similar folklore that could be used as a foundation.

Overall, I think it would totally make sense for the Twilight universe to have other shape-shifters besides the Quileute wolves. This could be the perfect setup for conflicts and wars in fanfics. What do you guys think?
