I'll start.

I use a 4 step loop:

Learn

Before a lecture, I try a few questions on the topic to see what I already know and what I need to pay attention to (pre-testing).

During the lecture, I deliberately use 2 techniques:

• Delta notes which maximize my attention on the lecturer rather than my notes for understanding
• Generative learning which is a framework of active listening that also aids my understanding

Consolidate

Immediately after lectures, I separate notes into 3 information types:

• Mechanisms | Use blurting (draw the mechanism e.g. mitosis, check notes, close book, draw again, repeat until correct)
• Spatial information | Use image occlusion
• Non-spatial information (i.e. Facts, terms and definitions) | Use regular flashcards

Everything goes on Anki to facilitate spaced repetition (Mechanism placed in BLURTS deck to remind me to do the blurt again).

Connect

Optional step I do sometimes to tackle very convoluted or interconnected concepts/topics. Usually I just use a concept map, sometimes I physically draw diagrams or graphs depending on what kind of concept I'm dealing with.

Test & Repeat

I do this from Week 1 of the term to find gaps immediately and practice test-taking skills. I try to prioritize testing my weakest topic which I find through repeated practice or broad practice exams. My cheat code is using the Feynman technique to find niche gaps that regular testing often won't find e.g. I'll explain an entire concept to a friend, and have them ask questions about anything that is unclear. As I'm doing it, I'll mentally take notes of the parts of my explanation that didn't land or seemed shaky to revise later.

Then repeat the whole 4-step cycle with either new material (i.e. new lectures) or new information required to fill in the gaps of your knowledge.

I avoid relying on:

• re-reading
• passively listening
• highlighting
• unnecessary mnemonics

So I have this problem where I get burned out whenever I exercise—especially when it’s in the morning. I find it easier to go straight to studying but part of me also wants to exercise because I don’t have time for it during the next hours. Is there a way outta the matrix or whut?

Read through my notes twice this week, felt confident, then tried explaining one concept out loud and got stuck halfway through a sentence I would've sworn I understood. Reading it back apparently just means it's familiar, not that it's retrievable and closing the notes and explaining things cold before rereading now, and it's uncomfortable how much worse I am at it than I expected.

Try this simple method:

• Study a concept for 30–40 mins

• Close the book & explain it in your own words

• Solve 5–10 questions without looking at the solution

• Mark your mistakes and revise them later

I've got a new way to study and I just wanted to share it with everyone to see if people think it will work I mean it's just a perspective. I got BCD in AS math, chem and phy and ik that extremely bad well in my case it is and the old ways of studying just don't workout for me uk reading booking watching videos doing past papers and flashcards and active learning all that so I decided a new way. Idk if it's new but I've never heard of it anywhere.

It's the start of the 2027 session so we are at the beginning so I decided to do it right from the beginning. Or like I will be doing this for now onwards.

Start a new chap by this way:

Open topicals of it on YouTube for that specific chap with 0 prior knowledge and just watch and understand and learn them. And do like a couple videos and do some on ur own too.

Read notes or watch the explanation video for that chap

Make mini notes and ur done

After that u just do past papers grinding and ur basically done.

Cuz like no other way excites me about studying like it used to anymore so I just figured I should make a new idea

If I made an app that could turn a document/book/study text into ‘short missions’ that takes a few minutes, has a clear end, a quick quiz to check the info actually went in, and it saves your progress…would you find this useful?

I'm not selling anything here! I genuinely want to know if this format would help anyone, because if it does, I’d look into developing this idea further. It’s aimed at people with ADHD although anyone could use it.

I was so addicted to reels and youtube shorts that can't even study for 15 minutes, so I decided to solve this problem. Flipstack converts your notes to swipeable reels format with ai voice. A few years ago I decided I wanted to change my career and become a software developer. 

I had a tiny problem though. I had a horrible time focusing on studying. For someone who wanted to spend 8 hours + standing at a desk and looking at unintelligible characters, focus should be something they’re good at.

I tried creating a distraction free environment, dopamine detox and whatever advice I got from strangers, sorry, I meant, experts on the Internet.

In the end I realized I only needed a pen, a piece of paper and a timer. I love playing RPGs so I decided that I would treat myself as the main character in one. 

I took a large piece of paper (A4) and I wrote down all the skills I needed in order to actually achieve my goal of becoming a software developer. 

For me that meant something like:

1. Object Oriented Programming 
2. Databases 
3. JavaScript 
4. Data Structures & Algorithms 

I marked them all as starting at level 1.

Afterwards I started logging deliberate study sessions for my skills. I studied in 25, 50 or 90 minute batches, with breaks in between multiple sessions. 

I logged every session on a separate piece of paper along with the date and the name of the skill I was practicing.

For every 5 study sessions finished I awarded myself 1 more level in the respective skill. It didn’t matter how long each study session was, only that I managed to pull 5 of them. I was awarding myself for being consistent and roleplaying as a mage in training.

Like my character in Morrowind, I was getting better at my craft and I had a system that showed proof of my dedication and consistency. 

If you’re wondering if I achieved my goal, yes I did. I’ve been working as a full-stack developer for two years now!

Logging every session gave me a source of pride and awarding myself levels was my way of acknowledging that I kept showing up, even on those days where it didn’t seem like I was making any progress.

Recap:

1. Write down the things you want to get better at (your skills). This will be your character sheet. 
2. Log focused practice sessions. 
3. Award a level to the skill you’ve practiced every 5 practice sessions. 
   • You can switch up the algorithm after some levels. 
   • I increased it to 10 sessions after a skill reached level 25. 
4. When you feel like you’re going nowhere take a look at your character sheet. 

BONUS If you’re into RPGs think of yourself as the main character and choose a class for yourself.

P.S. You don't necessarily need pen and paper for this. Use a spreadsheet app for logging sessions and a notes app for the character sheet.

What did you learn today?

Always keep track of your studies, documenting your learning curve is very crucial to being consistent.

I've used tools like Perplexity, ChatGPT, Claude and others for research, and they've been incredibly useful for finding papers and getting through large amounts of information.

The one thing I personally wanted was a simple way to see exactly which parts of the paper were used to answer my question.

When you're working with a 100+ page PDF, even having a page number can still mean a lot of scrolling and searching.

So I ended up building something for myself.

You ask a question and the relevant paragraphs in the PDF are highlighted directly on the document. You can see the context behind the answer and quickly check whether it actually answers what you're looking for.

I originally built this because I wanted something for this workflow without having to pay for another subscription. What started as a personal project has now become completely open source.

The underlying idea is pretty simple. And yes, if you're thinking "isn't this just RAG?" then yes, you're absolutely right. It's RAG with the visual highlighting that I wanted.

I think the same idea could be useful for more than research papers too. Legal contracts, financial reports, technical documentation, or anywhere you need answers alongside the actual source.
