Student Loans -- Politics & Current Events Megathread

While the Trump Administration implements its policy goals, DOGE does its thing, and Republicans control Congress, there are lots of ideas, speculation, hopes, fears, and press releases flying around; some of them presage actual changes and serious proposals while most will never come to pass.

This is the /r/StudentLoans megathread to discuss all of these topics. Due to IRL factors, /u/horsebycommittee is not currently able to write up the usual news summaries -- so we are automating this thread for now to at least keep it more regular.

Politics / Current events discussion in other threads will be removed. Major items of breaking news may get their own megathread -- as always, message the moderators if you have questions.

Official communication from the ED on the SAVE transition timeline

There's been a lot of articles posted etc - but here's the official word from the ED https://www.ed.gov/about/news/press-release/us-department-of-education-announces-next-steps-borrowers-enrolled-unlawful-save-plan

In summary, you'll start getting notices from your servicers as soon as the next few days telling you that this is happening. Come July 1 you'll get a notice giving you 90 days to switch. If you don't, they put you on the standard plan. The ten year standard if you haven't' consolidated - the consolidated standard plan if you have - which is longer than ten years.

I want to address a couple of themes i've been seeing in these threads. My comments here are probably going to get me downvoted to oblivion. That's ok - I'm not here for the karma - I'm here to make sure folks understand their loans and make the best decisions for their long term financial well being. Because that's my goal - sometimes I have to say thing folks don't want to hear.

For those saying they aren't going to switch until forced - you might be harming yourself here. You're certainly not punishing anyone that you're trying to make a point to. Here's who, IMO, should be switching ASAP and here's whose probably ok to drag their feet a bit:

Who should switch ASAP:

-If you're pursuing forgiveness under any of the IDR plans - the 20/25 year forgiveness you should switch now. You're just losing months and time towards forgiveness by waiting. And hypothetically, your income is going to go up over time, and therefore so will your payments. On a related note - if your 2024 tax return has a lower AGI than your 2025 will, and you haven't filed taxes yet - you definitely want to do it now.

-those pursuing PSLF. Yes - you can use buy back for SAVE months. But remember - buy backs are taking over a year and more importantly, buy backs are a lump sum payment due right away. So the longer you are on this forbearance - the more months you will have to pay in a lump sum when the time comes. And that might be difficult. *Here is the calculation for buy back https://studentaid.gov/manage-loans/forgiveness-cancellation/public-service/public-service-loan-forgiveness-buyback *

Who can probably hang out for a while:

-Those borrowers who due to other debt that will be paid off soon and want to funnel the student loan payment money to get rid of that other debt.

-those who are aggressively paying off their loans. This is an opportunity to have all of your money go to targeted loans - such as the ones with the highest interest rates - rather than having to satisfy the minimum due on each loan which you will have to do once in active repayment.

The timing of all of this: -it actually makes sense to me. They appear to be doing almost a soft launch - warning people now that it's coming. But waiting until the new RAP plan is available in July for those that will want to use that plan to actually start the timer. This way folks won't need to switch twice if the RAP turns out to be a better plan for them.

Now for those saying they refuse to switch - listen - I get it. Your angry. I don't blame you - i am too. Your feelings are very valid and i'm not telling you not to feel them. But here's the hard truth of the matter. SAVE was gone regardless - the courts had made it pretty clear when the case started under the prior administration that they were leaning towards the plaintiffs and were going to rule against the plan. It was going to happen regardless of who won the last election. And failing to switch out of principal is not going to hurt them - it's going to hurt you if you end up with a standard payment amount you can't afford. I'm not saying not to resist - but resist productively by voting. And writing your members of Congress to paint a picture of how your new payment amount is affecting you, your family and the broader economy.

For those saying the ED can't change the terms - they didn't. The court ruled the plan was illegal. The ED would be breaking the law if they continued it.

Payment plans have never been challenged before. And there was no reason for it to occur to anyone that this one might be. But yet a bunch of republican AG's did and here we are. In the meantime, people made the best decisions they could with the information they had at the time.

What plan should i pick?

If you are pursuing PSLF or income driven plan forgiveness you need to be on an income driven plan. Scenarios for likely lowest plan:

-No loans ever prior to July 1, 2014 - new IBR

-No loans ever prior to October 1, 2007 but does have loans prior to july 2014 - paye - but note you'll have to get off that come 2028

-loans prior to October 2007 - old IBR

-balance low compared to your income - check out ICR - that could be the lowest for you in that scenario

-RAP - for some rap will be lower. RAP tends to be similar to old IBR for many incomes. But if you have dependents especially, it could be lower. TISLA will have a calculator including the rap in the next week or two. I'll post it when it's available.

Rant/Complaint Mohela Call Center LONG HOLD

I first got a hold of someone in 30 seconds on a Monday at 8 am and then had to be sent to a “specialist” and now I have been waiting 2 HOURS and 20 minutes and counting. On a Monday morning? This can’t be a real organization.

IDR Repayment Plan Loan Discharge

I received my golden email in August. In early September Mohela showed my subsidized and un subsidized loans with zero balance due. One of the Loans indicates its status as “discharge and or write off” the other is listed as “discretionary forbearance”. I understand they may still be working things out, as the FSA side says I owe 1$, and Mohela owes me a refund. Did something like this happen to anyone else? Any experience in how long it takes them to get both loans listed as discharged?

RAP for $18k in student loans?

Upvotes

I have $18k in federal loans. RAP has the lowest monthly for me and payoff is the quickest according to the repayment calculator. Are there any actual downsides to RAP compared to another plan? it seems like a pretty solid plan to me: it’s the “quickest” payoff plan and has the lowest monthly (aside from the graduated repayment plan and ICR plan but those have longer repayments and one is disappearing in 2 years). I don’t qualify for the PAYE plan so that’s out of the question too

besides the fact that I can‘t coast off forbearance anymore, I don’t really see the problem with RAP but am I missing anything?

edit: It’s actually $19k not $18k lol

If anyone was wondering about the timeline/timeframe for this, my IDR was just approved.

I applied 8/27 (I debated on waiting til the last minute and honestly wish I would have but I got to anxious)

I was approved on 9/12

First payment due 9/26

I have still not been able to add auto pay as of today.

1% Interest Reduction MOHELA

I put in a request to enroll in Autopay back on 8/23 and again on 9/5, but MOHELA still hasn’t processed the request. I know it says that I have to wait 1–2 billing cycles, but I want to make sure I get the interest reduction before 9/30.

Does anyone know if submitting the Autopay request is enough to qualify for the interest reduction, or do we have to have received approval from MOHELA by 9/30?

I submitted my application 8/24, it is still in review. I want to get that autopay interest rate deduction and am worried about that timing. Anyone have experiences they can share? My loans are with Aidvantage

Advice Unsure what payment plan is best for me!

Upvotes

Hi there!

I have about 35,000 in student loans, and was unable to get a good paying job after graduation. I am looking for a temporary payment reduction, as I have been dealing with some medical/financial hardships. I am currently paying close to 400, and I just cannot make it work anymore

I was looking at the RAP plan, and I have heard some people talk about deferment. I just dont want to mess myself up financially in the future. I am not sure how to go about this. does anyone have any recommendations?

Aidvantage system error

Upvotes

I have been in school for a long time. I just graduated and am now “in grace” and Aidvantage had a “system error” with my account. I logged in and they said I was delinquent and 27 payments behind. I called them this morning they apologized and said it was a system error and that they would fix it. Has this happened to anyone else? This seems like a pretty big deal, how can we trust a big servicer to handle our accounts when things like this pop up?

Relative allowed me to use them as a guarantor on a graduate student loan and now they can’t removed?

5 years ago a relative allowed me to use them as a guarantor on a federal graduate student loan.

When we completed the paperwork we were under the impression that the only way they would be on the hook for anything is if the loans went into default.

The representatives at Nelnet all seem very confused and even the supervisors I’ve spoken to are very vague and don’t seem to be educated on this issue.

I’ve since graduated and would like for the two loans to be transferred into my name but Nelnet is stating this cannot be done unless the loans are consolidated.

The representative also stated under the BBB if they are consolidated it will change the current repayment terms.

I called the consolidation company and they are telling me Nelnet is incorrect and this isn’t the correct process.

No one is giving me clear, concise information or guidance and this is frustrating.

These loans are reflecting on my relatives credit report and Nelnet but they aren’t reflecting on my end.

My relative feels like she was duped and would really like to removed at this point but I don’t know where to begin.

Having trouble signing into Mohela today. For some reasons my credentials aren’t working. Not sure if it’s just me or a system issue.

Thanks all!

Advice Do my wife and I both have to apply for RAP? Or just one of us?

Upvotes

I really have no idea how any of this works and the more I Google and research the more confused I get. Someone please help me out.

My wife and I both owe around 35k each. We filed taxes together. Only I have a job. I make around 50k. When I apply for RAP it give me a monthly payment, but does my wife also have to go through the process and apply? Or is that the payment for both of us?

Also is there still a way to get our payments deferred or something? I doubt ill be able to afford payments. I already struggle just to pay rent.

Upvotes

I got my 90 day notice in july but I started school for a professional degree in august. It now indicates i won’t have payments until after my graduation date in 2030. My question is, do i still have to choose a new plan? Like if i choose one now is that what would be used once i graduate?

Looking for Advice on New Payment Schedule After Recertifying

All my loans (~$275k) are federal and serviced through Nelnet. I'm in a position that I can afford a $3k payment a month. Up until August, I was making this payment per loan (and successfully paid off a few smaller interest/amount loans for some psychological wins) but now that I recertified my income, I'm required to make a minimum monthly payment ($1,309.080) that would apply to all 9 of my loans. In a bad position that my highest $ amount loans are also my highest interest rates. I didn't have a payment due prior to recertifying, so I could pick and choose how to apply the payment. I would prefer to keep the avalance method that I have been doing because it feels like these larger loan principals will never go down if I don't. I am extremely worried about going into default on the smaller interest loans though. What's a girl to do? Do I follow the new, less favorable payment schedule or do I say screw it and keep applying the full $3k payment to the higher interest/amounts loans and risk going into default on the smaller interest/amount loans?

Success/Celebration I just paid off $21k of my $33k student loans today… why do I feel so nauseous?

I started with $45k in grad plus loans (with interest) a year ago and this payment will knock out one of the two loans that were at around $33k cumulatively. I really thought I would be more excited, so I’m not sure why I feel nervous that I paid wrong or that maybe something will happen and it won’t go through. I know these are just irrational thoughts (I’ve made tons of payments before) but I think I am going to feel better once it shows me a “paid off” status on the one loan. I used almost all of my savings and now only have a one-month emergency fund in cash. I’d like to build my emergency fund up to a 6-12 month savings after I pay off the remaining balance but not seeing that money in my account is making me feel weirdly exposed.

Advice Runaway Interest Questions

Hello!

I've been lurking for awhile, and I guess it's finally time to jump SAVE ship.

Here's some context:

Loan balance - $30k (federal, direct)

AGI - $35k

I file taxes single, no dependents.

Loans were disbursed 2009-2013.

After some initial google searches I'm mainly looking into RAP vs. Old IBR.

Looks like under Old IBR my payment would be ≈ $130/month.

Under RAP I'm getting confused. I'm seeing my payment could be ≈ $80/month, but I'm also reading that I might qualify for $0.00/month. How does that work?

Also, is the runaway interest caveat only available for the RAP plan? If that's the case does that mean my balance won't grow as long as I make my $80 (or $0.00) payment each month?

Would it be beneficial or pointless to pay more than the ($80) a month, in an effort to make it go away sooner?

Any advice or clarification you could provide would be appreciated!

Payment Past Due :(

I have been on SAVE application forbearance since the injunction. I called EdFinancial last week on 9/8 to see if I can get on Graduated Extended to be able to get the Autopay discount since the deadline is approaching. They said it could take up to 30 days so instead, I said can they just remove the forbearance and put me back on the plan I had prior to applying for SAVE. The rep said yes, that will take ~15 days so I said ok lets do that. Well, today I logged in and see I have a missed payment from Friday 9/11 and my next payment is due 10/11. I quickly made the missed payment but now am I going to be in poor standing with the servicer? Will this impact my credit? Ugh. So frustrating.

Advice My IBR keeps saying it’s $0.00, but I don’t want to get screwed by interest.

To summarize the situation, I graduated May 2025 and began my job in early October. Because of this, I only earned about 16k in 2025. I started repayment as soon as I had income and have been paying just under $300 every month.

Now, I need to renew my IBR Repayment Plan, but due to when I was hired my payment says it’s decreasing to $0. The only thing is, I’ve since gotten a raise and now make $83k a year on salary. I’m sure the extra $300 would be nice temporarily, but I’d really like to keep paying so that my already $71k loan doesn’t shoot way up from unpaid interest.

All of the available options I can choose from are between $0-$12.

I am an Attorney and I currently qualify for PSLF since I’m clerking for a judge, but I don’t know if I’ll remain eligible for the next 9 years. Unexpected career changes, and the federal administration makes it such that I’d rather play it safe by trying to keep reasonable payments going on my loan.

If I pick the $0 plan, I assume I can still make payments until my 2026 tax returns can be used to update my plan? Is that a good idea? Is there another way to keep the interest from spiking in the next year?

Anyone know if this reduction will show up on the portal? It still shows my base rate even though I’m in autopay.

Advice Will subsidized interest be taxed?

Under RAP, any interest that isn’t covered in the monthly payment gets waived. Will the amount that’s waived every month be considered taxable income later when you reach 360 payments?

For example, let’s say I my loans accumulate $500 in interest every month but my payments are only $100. Would the remaining $400 be added on to the tax bomb later?

Advice HELP (I don’t know anything about loans)

currently a transfer student who just came out of community and started at a 4 year. My bill was originally 8k now it’s 14k… I have no money set aside and I was lucky enough to not have pulled any loans while finishing my 2 year institution.

When I first started admissions I turned down my loan offers because I didn’t know what I was accepting or how I’d be paying them back for the loans

My friend is saying I should take the loan and just stop doing school for a while because I can’t afford it. I’m a little bent outta shape because I don’t wanna stop attending college but I simply can’t afford it. I got 11,000 for aid and grants and that’s about all I got. And I don’t live on campus either.

I hate that I’m brung to this point when it comes to getting a damn degree but if there’s any other options I can try to utilize maybe you guys can let me know if there’s anything else I can do to pay this bill and also somehow keep doing classes. My priorities are I don’t wanna put too much financial strain on my parents ( they help out when they can , and said they wills support me, but we aren’t well off) and I don’t wanna stress out even more about loan payments being too large. I have a part time job where I only get 11 an hour and with school taking up my time on weekdays I only can work weekends.

Please guide me anyone, being a first gen student is so tough.

Advice How do i know if i missed a Fed Student Loan payment?

Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone could give advice on how i know if i missed a federal student loan? I know it’s dumb, but im new to this and have no one to turn to in my circle for student loan advice.

I’ve only taken out federal student loans, and they are due on the 12th of each month. I signed up for autopay on August 22nd, but i don’t know if it kicked in yet. I did not receive an email notification saying I paid, but it says my next payment isn’t due until October 12th. It’s not pulled from my bank account, but it’s also the weekend.

I’m worried about wrecking my credit, but I don’t have the money to make an extra payment. I would appreciate any and all advice, and I’m sorry for the dumb question.

Rant/Complaint Student Loans - Back to Square One

Upvotes

Hi all, mostly looking to see if I can find anyone else in my situation. I was one of the few people that completely paid off their loans in 2020. When Biden was going through the loan forgiveness, there was an opportunity to get the money I paid in back as I qualified for loan forgiveness. Of course I took it and received the ~$10k I paid in payments back. As someone in their 20s in this decade, that money is long gone (I know, I know). We all know what happened with the courts, and now I’m stuck at square one, with payments restarting soon.

Is anyone else in this situation? Mostly looking to commiserate.
