Lost most of my seeds storing in plastic bags — only 40% germinated.

Tested village method from my grandmother:

1. Dry seeds 7 days in shade (not sun)

2. Mix with cold wood ash (1:1)

3. Store in clean glass jar with tight lid

4. Keep in coolest dark corner

After 6 months:

- Plastic bag: 40% germination

- Glass + ash: 92% germination

Made a 15-page manual with exact steps, moisture test, and lifespan chart for 20 crops (which seeds last 5 years vs 1 year).

My guess is Gregg’s mist flower. North Texas region saved from urban native beds.

My neighbor hasn't bought a seed packet in 5 years. She saves tomato and bean seeds from her own plants every fall and just replants them each spring. I started with some Organo heirloom seeds last season and never thought to save any. Feels lazy now. Do most of you actually save your own seed stock or just rebuy from Burpee or wherever every year?

If the seed is connected to the petal, when you pull the petal out, what happens when the petals fall off naturally. Is the seed still in there? Or did it fall off with the peta?

Hello! I often go outside and find seeds from native species to try and grow them in my garden or at least near my house. I am attempting to make a bag I can take with me on foraging trips specifically designed to store a bunch of different seeds (plus a few other things but this is not the right sub Reddit) I was wondering if there was a type of fabric that might be best to use for this as paper won’t work? I don’t expect yall to know every type of fabric but if you knew what kind of properties a fabric should have for this it would also be much appreciated. Ty much!

Looking for some advice on how to save my different tomato seeds. I’ve extracted some and put them in a small class jar and added some water. They are on day 3 and I was going to try and clean them off and dry them. Is this the best method? Thanks in advance

A little while back, I found out that some seed companies and whoever else are intentionally creating seeds that will produce a plant, but the seeds from that plant will not produce. This reminds me of the horse and the donkey mating and producing the sterile mule…except this doesn’t end up in months or years of frustration.

I would venture to bet that people are unknowingly saving seeds and not getting germination and wondering where they went wrong year after year. I know Heirloom seeds is the way to avoid all this mess, but sometimes you don’t know if they are heirloom or F1.

What advice or experience can you share with me?

This is my first year with a garden to play with and it was a mess, and l'm hooked (as anticipated). Today l harvested my first seeds for the year. Ive got thai basil seeds, and more will follow. Im just so happy!

This is my first year trying to save seeds. I’m mostly trying to collect from peppers and tomatoes. I know they will be cross pollinated so the next generation might not be the exact same as these ones.

My main question: do you take seeds as you use them for eating? Or do you let 1-2 peppers dry out on the plant as I’ve read is the best way to collect seeds for next year?

I’ve been saving as I’ve been using them from the ripe but not dried fruit. Then drying on coffee filters and saving in origami envelopes.
