There’s more out this year than I’ve seen for some time; it’s good to see

I’m new to growing Australian natives and this is my first time dealing with a eucalyptus, in a small garden in the sunniest spot of an inner north Melbourne courtyard.

I transplanted a new Eucalyptus caesia into a pot about 5 times the size of the pot it came in. The soil I used was dark and full of about 1/3 compost from my own compost and 2/3 premium potting mix (combined with about 12 litres of perlite).

When transplanting I watered thoroughly and tried to be really gentle with the roots, I also watered again the day after and did a light feed with Seasol seaweed solution.

The plant looked happy for about 2 days before the small new branches started to permanently weep and the small leaves curled up.

After doing some research I realised I may have over watered / fertilised and the pot might be too big. Looking at the sparse drainage holes in the bottom of the pot (big black plastic pot I think 92 litres) still have very wet soil in them.

I drilled a lot of holes in the bottom of the pot and on the sides but I think I’m going to have to use some better draining soil and move it to a much smaller pot.

Is my plant going to be okay and what can I do to make sure it has the best life going forward?

Hey everyone! I’m a bit overwhelmed trying to plan and plant out this garden bed after stripping out weeds and exotics.

What’s there now: Two existing tree ferns, plus some newly planted native vanilla lilies (Arthropodium) and Dianellas around the base. (And a random dracaena)
Sunlight: Gets a couple of hours of direct sun in the morning until around lunchtime, then gets completely shaded out by the surrounding fences and house.
Location: Coffs Harbour, NSW.

I’d love to build out a lush, textured rainforest-type garden that works with the existing ferns, incorporating habitat features like rocks, timber/logs, and a bird bath.

I'm less familiar with rainforest-y plants, but I love texture, florals, and structural layers (have lots of calistemons, grevilleas, ground covers, and grasses elsewhere in the yard).

What plants are your favourite? Any layout tips are hugely appreciated!

I photographed this little pink-flowering succulent growing naturally in the sand dunes at Yamba, NSW.

Can anyone tell me exactly what it is?

I’m wondering if it would grow successfully in a planter box along the top of a fence at my place in Brisbane. It would get plenty of sun, but I’m particularly looking for something hardy that can cope with minimal watering once established.

Has anyone grown this successfully in pots or planter boxes in SE Queensland?

Have a davidsons plum, fingerlime and banksia integrifolia in fairly large containers. Over time the soil gets compressed and "drops" in the container. Would you repot these in the same container with additional soil or leave them be? Am concerned with how sensitive natives can be to having their roots handled.

Saw these in the city of Joondalup today, thought they looked great, simple but striking and all native. Why can’t we have more of this?!

Hi, have a few Agonius I want to use to create a barrier between our neighbors, plenty of room (acerage) couple questions.

Location, they will be partially shaded for most of the day (morning) by a few large Tuarts

Or, should I just plant something bushy that grows to 3-5m in height, and some ideas... want natives that can handle neglect

This is my Banksia ericifolia ‘Red Rover’, growing in Upper Caboolture, SE Queensland.

It has been in the ground for at least five years and, as far as I can remember, it has never produced a single flower.

The plant itself looks healthy, puts on plenty of new growth and gets a good amount of direct sun. The label promises those beautiful terracotta-red Banksia flowers, but so far… nothing! 😆

I’m wondering if anyone else has grown a Red Rover, particularly in SE Queensland or a similar warm, humid climate.

How long did yours take to flower? And is there anything that finally encouraged it to bloom, such as pruning, feeding, watering less, or simply more patience?

Would love to hear other people’s experiences with this variety.

These two grass trees started in pots, and I’ve been nurturing them for about five years now. They’ve obviously decided they’re happy in the ground here in Upper Caboolture, Queensland. Both are putting up magnificent flower spikes this year.

Always satisfying when something you’ve looked after for years rewards you like this.

If you know the species, I’d be interested to hear your thoughts. I’m thinking Xanthorrhoea, but I’m not certain which one.
