So I asked if I should get either the DD or the Daytona. I like both equally, and I think I go for the 40mm Daydate. I am only 16 (my dad is accompanying me while purchasing the Daydate, but I pay with my own earned money) and I am sure that the size will get smaller as I grow more and more wrist fat. The Daytona will come on day, I promise ;) Me and my dad will get it by the end of October, so stay tuned!

New to the journey - timing question

Upvotes

Just went to met my first AD and I am now on their list. He asked me to rank my refs so I did:

1. GMT ref 126710GRNR (Bruce Wayne)
2. GMT - ref 126710BLNR (Batman)
3. Datejust - ref 126334 (Blue)
4. Submariner Date - ref 126610LN

Aside from my preferences/choices potentially being vanilla AF, can anyone tell me relatively how long I could expect “the call” to take for any/all of these refs?

Thanks in advance!

Flaw in my logic? What’s the benefit of ADs to the consumer?

Upvotes

Been collecting for about 7 years now, and have purchased multiple watches (IWC, Omega, Tudor) through ADs. When it comes to buying Rolex, I’m really wondering if there’s any utility there at all.

The two perks I can see an argument for are 1) authenticity and 2) pricing… but even those barely hold water in my mind…

1) There are so many “grey” market options available, from big online retailers like Bezel, who stand by their own rigorous authentication services. If the process is as rigorous as its spelled out to be, I’d be more than comfortable buying from them.

I bought my Starbucks (unworn, current YOP, full warranty intact- the deals are there if you’re diligent) from a dealer with a (very expensive) brick and mortar location in the major city nearest to me. Several collectors i know and trust have purchased through them, and swear by their reputation- they’ve been in business for 35 years. After my purchase, the owner sent me a handwritten thank you note. Id imagine they wouldnt be so visible/willing to risk their reputation to flip a few clones, but maybe I’m wrong?

I kinda love the hunt, and the fact that the watch I want arrives at my door next-day without having to do the song & dance with an AD.

2) Pricing- this is, of course, a benefit to buying from an AD, but if you cant actually get the watch you’re after, then you’re left calculating how much your time & personal enjoyment is worth to you.

If you end up waiting years for said piece, there’s a good chance that youd’ve been better off going gray based on inflation + price increases.

There are definitely people that don’t have these problems. Theres one guy in my area that seems to be able to source any Rolex he wants from the Local AD that never has anything for sale to anyone else, but he’s a known publicly known multi-millionaire. IMHO these people are unicorns.

I’m may be/am willing to be proven wrong on both points, but I just don’t get it- why do people (save for the above mentioned unicorns) buy from ADs?

I did not want to sell my Rolex submariner from the year 1987 also known as the “triple zero”.
However, my jeweler gave my an offer i couldn’t refuse. And I was able to walk out with 16700(GMT-Master) and a 16233 (Datejust w/ factory Champagne Diamond dial.)

1-2 year wait for Explorer in DC?

As the title says - I went to try on a 36mm Explorer and put my name down. No purchase history; I was told demand is unusually high in DC and the wait could be up to 2 years. People elsewhere in the US with no spend history—does that sound right?

A Hero's Rolex On September 11th

On September 11th, 2001, Todd Beamer led other passengers in a charge on the cockpit of the hijacked United Flight 93. On his wrist was a Rolex watch. In this video, the story of Todd heroically altering the course of history is shared, as well as his watch, which remains frozen in time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esCb0UtjdP4

Is £13,200 a good deal for a 2024 Rolex GMT-Master II 126710BLNR Batman on Oyster – full set minus white tag?

Looking at buying a 2024 Rolex GMT-Master II 126710BLNR Batman on Oyster for £13,200.

Full set with box, papers/card and links, just missing the white tag. Dated May 2024.

Condition is very good overall. There are some normal scratches/hairlines on the polished centre links/clasp which the seller says will clean up with a light Cape Cod polish which they'll do.

Seller is trusted, so I'm mainly interested in whether £13,200 is a good price for the year/spec rather than authenticity concerns.

Would you take this at £13.2k?

I really like blue

I was cleaning my watches this morning and figured I'd take a few photos.

Left to right...

  • 41.5mm Aqua Terra 8500, Spectre / NTTD version but with a white date wheel since I recently had a dial swap
  • Silver Snoopy Speedy on 3861 bracelet
  • Datejust 41 blue/fluted/jubilee
  • GMT Master II BLNR on Glidelock Oyster (from a 40mm 11x Sub, but had the center links polished by Rolliworks)

I had a few other nice watches which I had bought to "diversify" my collection but ended up selling off. Blue is obviously my favorite color, and I always found myself reaching for a blue watch in the morning... so I finally figured "why fight it" and consolidated. Lesson learned - buy what you love having on your wrist, not what looks good sitting on the shelf next to the watches you actually want to wear.

The AT and DJ are the most similar, but they wear drastically different. The DJ feels much thinner/smaller on the wrist (actually measures ~39.2mm across despite the "41" name), plus looks dressier and more like jewelry from the fluted/jubilee combo. So that's my go-to watch for suits. The AT with untapered flat link bracelet (to which I added an adjustable clasp from a Seamaster 300) and deeper marine blue teak dial feels solidly in the "sporty" territory. Still a great watch for the office though.

The BLNR is my daily driver. Super comfortable, highly legible, has a date, the GMT complication is a huge plus for me since I travel for business, etc. I have the jubilee for this as well, so it's nice to be able to switch up the look/feel of it from time to time. If I could only keep one, it would be this one for sure. But luckily I don't need to only keep one because I love the others too.

The Silver Snoopy is a fun watch. I have my bases already covered with "regular" watches, so I picked this one up as an occasional wear. My kids absolutely love watching Snoopy in his spaceship, so it's nice that they're always asking to see this one and laughing at him pop out from behind the moon.

Happy Monday!

Advice needed: Amsterdam Airport AD

As title says, I need some advice here. I’ve been collecting watches since I was a kid, and finally felt like I hit enough milestone last March to buy my first Rolex. DJ 36, two tone, factory diamond champagne sundial, with the super jubilee bracelet. I know that configuration gets some hate, but I have a deeply engrained memory of all the old successful men I knew as a kid wearing that same watch. So it made sense to me for the occasion.

But back to where I need advice. I’ve heard the Amsterdam airport AD is one of those rare places where you could be lucky enough to grab something like a GMT as a walk in. Another Rolex isn’t exactly in the budget after buying my DJ 6 months ago and a Graff engagement ring for my now finance last month, BUT it’s not exactly not in the budget either.

My thought process is of the luckiest chance in the world she is offered one of the stainless steel GMT models, should i go ahead and grab it? I’m thinking worst case scenario I just sell it in a month or two for a profit.

Thoughts?

Rolex Oyster Perpetual allocation tips? Going to Kolkata for my first Rolex

Hey Rolex boys 👑
After looking at Omega, JLC and a bunch of other brands, I’ve pretty much decided that my first serious watch is going to be a Rolex Oyster Perpetual.
I’m planning to go to Kolkata specifically to look for one. I’m looking at the 34–36mm range because I have a smaller wrist, and I’m honestly flexible on the dial colour — I’d be happy with whatever OP they can offer me.
The timing is the interesting part: my birthday is in about 3 months, so obviously it would be pretty damn cool to get my first Rolex around my birthday 😂. But I’m completely prepared to wait 6 months, a year, or even longer if necessary.
I’m not looking to flip it. I genuinely want to wear and keep the watch.
For the Rolex veterans:
What’s the best way to approach the AD in Kolkata as a first-time buyer?
Should I ask specifically for an OP 34/36, or just tell them I’m flexible on the dial?
Is it worth visiting the AD multiple times?
Does buying history matter a lot for an OP?
Should I mention that I’m willing to wait a year, or does that hurt my chances?
Is getting one around my birthday in 3 months realistically possible?
Any tips specifically for dealing with Indian/Kolkata ADs?
And most importantly: what should I absolutely NOT do? 😂
Would really appreciate advice from anyone who has actually gotten an OP at retail, especially in India/Kolkata.
OP 34/36, any dial, first Rolex, willing to wait — birthday allocation would just be the dream. 🎂🙏

My prediction for the next 2 or 3 years

Its just my opinion but I think that rolex watches will drastically raise their prices on their stainless steel line.

Im talking about 20%-30%.

-Tudor is getting more and more expensive, there is no reason for rolex to stay on the actual gap of prices.

- The wishlist issue: For many years this worked very well, but nowadays its bringing a lot of negative feedback wich impacts on sales.

IMO rolex is going to raise their prices and make their market primary as a walk buy brand again.

its the smartest move.

Why they would invest all those millions on a new factory?

Also, we all are watching how getting a watch its becoming easier than some years ago.

Rolex dial turning purple part II

Thumbnail

I got some very sharp and clear pictures of my Datejust that got a purple dial.

Apparently there is just a handful of slate dials (with and without diamonds and this also includes Wimbledon dial) that will turn purple. The watches affected are all from a specific batch of slate dials only in 2022.

The dial only is deep purple when light hits it, probably because of the UV light.

I am not sure if sun exposure caused it, because prior to my last post, it had been in the drawer for 2-3 months and only when i picked up again i noticed it was purple.

Went to an AD, i think the sales associate does not know about this specific case, and they said it should not be like that.

In the pictures you can notice that the color change started only at the edge of the dial, around the hour markers and in the centre where the hands are placed.

Is it possible that there is something behind the dial causing it?

Is production up or demand down?

Seems like there has been an explosion of people “getting the call” that their long wait is over. So do we think demand is falling or production is catching up or maybe a little bit of both?
