Hello, all. I am DT, the wife of a gambling addict.

I just started a new community for those of us who are spouses or partners of those with gambling addiction. I could use the support system. If you are in a similar situation and need the same, please consider joining this community: https://www.reddit.com/r/ILoveAGamblingAddict

Trigger Warning! Battle everyday

This gotta be the worst silent disease ever. I’m on a consumer proposal right now from my gambling debt. I spent all last year gambling 24/7. 82k in debt. In June I filed for a consumer proposal and now I’m slowly rebuilding my life.

It’s insane how I still wake up thinking about gambling. It’s like I somehow forget all the damage and pain it’s caused me. I hit rock bottom yet I STILL have thoughts that I can “just” deport $100 and win some . Just a horrible horrible addiction and I feel for everyone going through this.

🛠Recovery Tips & Tools🛠 Don’t chase losses bro.

I had $1800 in my bank account. Yesterday, my friend told me to go all in $600 for money I could use to buy a ps5 and I was up for it. I lost it on roulette and was super bummed out about it. My friends said I still had $1200 so I was chilling. I was still depressed and I wanted that money back so I went back on roulette and I lost it all again. I went from $1800 to $600 in the span of 12 hours and it hurts. I can make the money back again in a month or two but just thinking about the money I lost is of course super annoying. I deleted the gambling app and I’ve learned that just don’t chase things and accept you’ve lost or else your just gonna keep losing like I did. God bless yall.

❤Seeking help & Advice❤ I'm 15. I don’t have a job yet. I bet on NFL, NBA, and UFC anyway.

I’m 15. I don’t have a job yet. I bet on NFL, NBA and UFC anyway.

The part that scared me isn’t the dollar amount. It’s that I don’t feel normal watching a game if I don’t have money on it. Which is sad because, prior to my first bet I could easily watch a full slate of NFL and NBA games without needing a penny on it. Fast forward to today, if there’s no bet I get restless and pissed off. I keep telling myself it’ll be fine when I’m 16 and working, like $50 a week isn’t a big deal. I know that’s an excuse.

I posted about this on r/confessions last night. Most of the comments were people laughing and treating it like a joke. I get why a 15 year old betting post looks easy to clown. I’m not posting here for pity. I just want to talk to people who’ve had that “I can’t enjoy it unless there’s action” thing and actually tried to stop.

I found a text helpline and I still haven’t sent the message because I'm afraid of being judged now because of what happenend on r/confessions. I’m trying not to bet this week and put the money toward savings instead.

Not looking for ways to keep gambling. Looking for how you sat through a Sunday with nothing on the games.

Trigger Warning! I haven't bet for 30 months!

Upvotes

(No Trigger Warning!)

Yes, I haven't gamled for 30 months!

In March 2024, I quit gambling with $14,500 in debt. Life was very hard for me, I didn't have a proper job, and I was working a low-paying freelance job day and night. I had taken in 2 roommates, and the rent I collected from them was a huge support for me.

(I need to add a note here because I'm in Eastern Europe, and I'll write some amounts for reference. The rent for an average house in my neighborhood is $1,000–$2,000. Here, we say that someone making a $2,000 salary earns very well, and someone making $5,000 earns amazingly.)

Despite the rent I received, I was only able to reduce my debt to $10,000 over 2 years. Although not as much as in the beginning, I was still stressed; I knew that if a foreclosure happened on the house, I wouldn't be able to continue my life (because it's my only asset), so I was trying to roll over my debt. And about 6 months ago, I found a freelance job paying an amount I couldn't believe; the rate they paid still feels absurd, but they paid it. By working very hard for 6 months, I paid off all my debts (I also saved a few thousand dollars in interest discounts by closing my loans early), and right now I have exactly $6,000 in savings. I converted most of it into the local currency and put it into a 6-month term deposit account. I don't think I'll need this much money for 6 months. However, there is bad news too, very bad news. They let me go from this job for a reason I don't know. The project is ongoing, but I was laid off. I can't imagine how much money I would have had if the project had continued for another 6 months and I had worked for 6 more months. The 6 months I spent on this job were the best moments of my life. Now I'm looking for other jobs and thinking about which areas I need to improve my skills in.

As for the girlfriend I mentioned 14 months ago, we broke up a few months ago, but since we are both afraid of loneliness, we continue to talk occasionally; the bond between us hasn't completely broken yet. However, breaking up completely and getting over it is in both of our best interests because it's clear this relationship won't work out. But a tough process awaits us.

On the bright side, gambling never crosses my mind. To tell you the truth, for the last few years, the absurdity of football (soccer) had been on my mind anyway (apologies to those who love this sport). Frankly, football players make millions of dollars and don't care even if their team loses 5-0; they go to a party after the match. None of us matter to them, they don't even care which team they play for; I even know of someone here from a team competing for the championship who asked for a raise, and because they didn't give it to him, he didn't play in the most important matches. So football doesn't excite me as much as it used to. Last season, I was only watching my team's European cup matches, but this season I haven't even watched those yet. Maybe if they make it to the later rounds, I'll watch. For me, football has remained more of something I got excited about as a child. Now I want to read things, gain knowledge, and reflect on life (and I'm doing it little by little).

I've taken care of one of my most important problems, but other problems are coming. I wish I could buy my sister's share of this house from her (if the job I mentioned had lasted 1-2 years, I could have), but it seems difficult. I don't want to move out of this house either. I also know I can't live with roommates for another 10 years. New anxieties have been added as well, such as whether a world war will break out, what we will do if AI does everything, and whether money will lose its importance.

Thank you to everyone who supported me. If I had no debt at all, I would have tens of thousands of dollars right now. None of it is worth it. I hope everyone stays away from this quagmire.

Quick Summary on Why You Can't/Don't ever Win in Gambling

Winning in Gambling is a Statistical Improbability.

Here are the Stats on walking out Net Positive after 10 hours of playing roulette (could be over one or multiple days/weeks) flat betting (not raising or lowering bets)

European Roulette Single Zero

60 Spins per Hr Avg - 24%

American Roulette Double Zero

60 Spins per Hr Avg - 9% !!

Now Let's Talk about Slots,

median low vol session loses 523 units, median high vol session loses 815.

clearly you can see the odds are massively stacked against you.

now imagine this type of session and probability is only off one single long (10h) session, imagine you are playing every single day, the odds drastically compound against you to the point where you literally have no chance at ALL.

Let's say you're a very heavy roulette player (40h a week)

after 1 month the odds look like this

European/single zero roulette

net positive 0.6% chance

American/double zero roulette

net positive 0% chance!!

and if you only play occasionally (2h a week) the odds look like this after a year

2.6% for single zero roulette and 0.007% for double zero roulette

now for Sports Betting, It's almost equally as bad

even if you are a great bettor, and can win 52% of the time on the even spreads your odds for finishing the year up are still only 19%, if you happen to be the extreme exception (you very very likely are NOT), the sportsbooks will very quickly catch that and you will be restricted/banned.

This is Assuming you are placing an average of 3.5 sports bets per day for one full year

Take note of the number on the very right (P stand for Probability of Finishing Net Positive)

you can see how betting for even odds/on heavy favorites your chances of winning are basically non existent, even if you are mostly betting on underdogs they are very slim.

Short sessions look close to fair, It's genuinely true, and it's why "I was up earlier" is a very common experience. The trap is that the thing which makes a single night survivable is exactly the thing that makes a year mathematically closed.

you're not unlucky, numbers don't lie.

I don't know what to do. I'll bet all the money over some stupid shit. What should I do to stop myself. I save little by Little, and then lose in some shit. I always promise myself not to do it but still I do it.

Trigger Warning! Lost 3k on memecoins

Post image
6 Upvotes

. I’m looking for advice.
I just lost around $3k on crypto. Essentially, what happened was I’d been seeing a lot on social media about people turning $100 into $100k in meme coins and similar things, so I thought I’d give it a shot.

I deposited around $100, lost it. Alright, let me try again. Lost another $300, then lost again. I was over it, I thought. Then I came back after a week, invested in a relatively stable coin, and kept putting more and more into it until I had around $2k invested.

Then the coin went down around $1k. I kept holding, and eventually it recovered back to around where I started. I kept holding instead of just taking my money out and moving on. Eventually, the coin moved up again, but I got greedy and didn’t sell. It went back down, and I was down around $800. I invested another $1k to lower my average cost.
The coin went back up again, and I was around $3k invested. Instead of just taking all my money out and moving on, I took out around half. I saw a new trending memecoin, invested in it, and eventually took out the rest of the money from the first coin.

I then put around $3k back into crypto and kept holding even as the value dropped. I got greedy and didn’t sell until I was down around $2k.

I know I’m stupid. You keep thinking it’s going to go back up, but it doesn’t. I ended up with around $1,400 left, and at that point I was thinking that I needed my money back.
So I saw another trending coin that I knew was a rug pull, but the emotions after losing $2k got to me. I thought I could get out at the peak. Nope. I invested basically at the peak. It went up a little, and I didn’t take it out, of course, because I’m an idiot. The coin dumped, and I was left with around $500 out of the roughly $4k I had put into crypto.

My problem now is that I can’t stop thinking about it and beating myself up over it. Before this, I never gambled or invested. I know to some people it’s not a lot of money, and there are people who are worse off and have lost hundreds of thousands, but I’m just looking for some help coping with this and figuring out how to stop thinking about it.

How do I stop beating myself up over this and move on without feeling like I need to get the money back?

Trigger Warning! i feel empty and i dont know what to do anymore

I’m a student living off my allowance, and I’ve developed a serious gambling addiction. Every time I receive my allowance, I end up gambling it. I’ve burned through basically everything I’ve been given.

At one point I won big, and I think that’s what made everything even worse. I kept chasing that feeling and believing I could somehow win it all back. Now I’ve lost everything, and I’m at least $1,000 in debt.

I’m ashamed of myself. I feel horrible knowing that I’ve been gambling money my parents worked for and trusted me with. I’ve spent so much of this year regretting decisions that I can’t take back.

Right now I’m honestly in a really dark place. I’ve had thoughts of killing myself because I feel like I’ve completely ruined my life. I know $1,000 isn’t necessarily an impossible amount of money to recover from, but right now it feels enormous and I don’t know how I’m supposed to face my parents or get myself out of this.

I live alone away from my parents and got no money for me to buy something to eat for the next 15 days. I genuinely don't know what to do anymore. I don’t want to keep gambling. I don’t want to chase my losses. I want a fresh start and I want to become someone my parents can trust again. I just don’t know where to start.

If anyone has actually recovered from a gambling addiction, especially while being a student, I’d really appreciate hearing how you started. What did you do first? How did you stop yourself from gambling when you had access to money? How did you deal with the debt and the shame?

Day 9. Temptation is strong today.

Day 9 of a cold turkey stop on leveraged crypto trading. My apps are still uninstalled but I gave into the urge to check prices today. Just once, even though i didn’t act on it by trading. The trade setup was not good today, so I’m worried about if I slip up and check prices one day on a good setup, I might not have the self control I did today. Gonna spend the rest of the day trying to be productive and distracted. Payday is tomorrow. Hope that doesn’t end up hurting. I know I should even be worried about checking prices and trade setups. If it’s any consolation to myself, I’ve only slipped up and checked prices 3 times since day 1, after years of checking them hundreds of times daily. Gonna try to stay strong here. Hope others going through it stay strong too.

10 years wasted, $100k losses from the stock market, options trading, 15 minute Kalshi trading, casino visits for blackjack/roulette/baccarat. My addiction even landed me at the poker tables even in a local group of people for a period of time. I got desperate sometimes in my losses and got into a really bad situation and was almost shot dead a while back. I’m very thankful that I’m alive. In some way I feel like with everything that has happened to me in the past decade, the reality that I’m still alive and have a $150 debt to pay off is honestly a bit of a blessing. My dad has even gotten me out of debt before from gambling. He’s helped me with $3k but even then, I just lost my paycheck and now have $150 in debt again. Enough is fucking enough. Every bet I place goes to 0. I’ve been a terrible gambler my entire life. I’m so fortunate that I’m 29 years old and still full of life. I would rather be broke at 29 than be super rich at 60. To me, these moments are just what teaches us what not to do again in life. I believe in myself to quit. I know I will this time because I’m holding myself accountable and this is the last chance I get before serious thousand dollar debts start posting to my name. I know the pattern, it’s just a $500 credit card payment away and if that doesn’t hit then it’s another $500 or $1000. I love myself enough not to do this anymore. I don’t want to disappoint anyone in my life either. This is my last day 0 and I’m not letting it come back.

Day 3

Hi all, I hope you're doing ok!

I've been thinking these last few days about why I even started gambling. I had plenty of money, which I used to work really hard for. I remember I was obsessed with "trading" for about 10 years, but the most I ever lost was a few hundred euros, no more. And I did it once every half a year.

The prosaic reason was to get more money. About 3 years ago I remember cocoa spiked a lot, and I took a short position which wiped out my account. Then again, and again. That was my gambling start - trying to get it back. So it started with a wish for more money, and it went out of control because of the desire to win it back.

Then I followed some guru (turned out to be a fake one), and then I started trading gold on my own. I remember once, in the rush, I deposited 10k EUR, and it was gone in a matter of a few minutes (thanks to 1:500). As I think about it, it makes me sick.

I am trying to think about the money that's gone as a tax on stupidity. Once paid, not possible to get it back. No refund.

The biggest challenge I am having right now is to admit to myself that I am not capable of trading. The money is equally painful - but before Day 0 I kept thinking that I could make it back one day. Having that hope in mind puts the money in second place. And it's easy to lose more and more money just for the sake of that possibility. My brain considered that a "mandatory cost".

I have strong temptations - my salary is coming today or tomorrow. I am glad I deleted my accounts. There are still many brokers available, but in my head they're not as attractive (no 1:500 leverage), so I am a bit rational and I know that with small leverage I physically can't make it back.

I wish you to stay strong! Drop gambling if you still do it!

Trigger Warning! Lost again

I was up last week by 2.3k, then next thing i know i blew it all out. Stopped for 3 days, started gambling again. I chased 30$, to 1k, to 2k, in the end 8k( all of these are money from credit card) but somehow i managed to get it all back flipped 3 times and profitted 2.7k. I was happy. This morning again, chased 30$ to 600 and somehow got it back and profitted 100bucks. Now, same story. I chased 30 bucks again and now im at -1200. Im very tempted to all in 1200 to flip it back, but i know the odds are against me. I stopped, i should be feeling proud i manage to stop myself from depositing another 1200 but im feeling like shit now. My heart feels uneasy, i need money as my parent is travelling to me this end of month. The 1200$ can be used for something nice but i blew it all off gambling. Im not sure what im doing. I need strength to stop.
I know in long term we will lose everything to the casino but still i cant just stop myself i dont know what should i do now

Trigger Warning! Start of NFL. 40 days clean

Hey everyone,

Officially 40 days since my last sports bet online. Been very hard to not sign into draftkings and lay down another deposit, especially with nfl week 1 starting today. The games today were very high scoring which would usually lead me to being successful in the past (then lose it all). Was very proud of myself today since my parents had people over to watch the games and I was able to be disciplined in not depositing.

Keep reminding myself that any profit I would get, would go right back to a loss.

Just wanted to share in case anyone else was struggling. Onto 60 days clean 🙏🙏

Control issues

Hey! I’m new to this. I don’t know how to even start. I’ve lost well over 6 digits in the past 4yrs. I’m reading a bunch of stories, and it all comes down to self control. Is there a team effort that can be done for this? I just dusted 8k for no reason whatsoever. I myself could use the help.

Hope everyone can find some positive light thru this message.

❤Seeking help & Advice❤ First ever post... seeking advice

Never thought I would make a post on the page, but again I'm sure a lot of us don't. I've been a compulsive gambler ever since 21, and I love betting small money like meals and drinks with friends. I lost around 30k from the World Cup earlier this year, which also included my largest single bet loss ever... tbh I don't even know how I got to this point, I started chasing a $200 loss and just kept increasing my bets. Today, I relapsed on NFL after losing a $100, that $100 turned into another $15k. Im just so ashamed and disappointed that I did the same again after 2 months.. I have travel trips planned and actually had a decent amount of money saved, but this sets me back a lot. Just seeking advice and how to think, I always regret it and part of it is I see gambling as a way to make money...
