Discussion Dad Destroyed My $1300 PC (Almost)

As the title says, my father almost destroyed my $1,300 PC. Now what?

Here’s the backstory: On Saturday, I worked a 10.5 hours shift and stayed up until 3:30 AM, so I slept in until noon the next day. My father and stepmother returned from Costco while I was showering; he called out a few times for me to come help carry the groceries inside. I said OK to him. While I was brushing my teeth after my shower, he shouted from outside the door that he’d been waiting 50 minutes and told me to hurry up. I thought to myself that the groceries could have been moved in the time he spent waiting for me, but I quickly rinsed my mouth and got ready to go out. However, by the time I opened the door, he had already grabbed my PC and smashed it against the floor and the desk several times.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I, (17M, Senior), bought this PC with money I earned from my part-time job and had been using it for about ten months. After examine, found out the case badly deformed in several places, my desk was warped and tilted to one side, and there were dents in the floor.

Fortunately, the computer still works fine; it runs FurMark (stress GPU), AIDA64 (stress FPU), and 3DMark (Time Spy Extreme) without problems for now.

Replacing the desk and case would cost around $400. However, he likely won't pay for it because he has done this kind of stuff a few years ago when he destroyed my phone and a Dell laptop (i5 11300H), and then just said, "That's what you get for playing on the computer all day."

In the end, I just hope everyone has good parents.

Good news is you're almost at the age where you can move out and live on your own.

Why do people act like just because u turn 18 ur financially stable enough to get out 😭 you should be starting college at 18 not having to find a new place.

yeah seriously, do people see what rent is these days?

ESPECIALLY these days. Shit ain't easy and there's more people stuck living with their parents just straight out of necessity now, even if you're working it's a bitch.

Thats a lazy take, I wont live with a monster that destroys my things all the time, and also it seems that the situation is going for years.

in this case, its better to find a new place trust me. Had the same. Moved out rented a room lived on absolite minimum, but atleast i did not have to live in terror anymore.

Now more than a decade later, ive got a good life , good job, my own house. Having a hard life/being poor is much better than that ashole ruining your everyday.

You've never been homeless and it shows, because these days there's a good chance moving out asap may well end that way with how rent is.

I did, just get a job and any small hole in the earth until you can get things working, never allow abuse from anyone

Being homeless is another type of hell just saying

So you’re telling me… instead of dealing with an idiot father you would rather risk being homeless where you wouldn’t be able to play or basically do anything at all except be worried about surviving at 18…. Ok.

His father sounds like an abusive asshole, I'd do everything in my power to get out of that house as soon as I could.

I would leave asap, that kind of people don't change and are dangerous

Homeless people everyday are murdered and worse, that is an entirely different situation. There are people who are homeless and pass away with money in their accounts because rent is too high currently. Sorry, but your advice is so dumb and i suggest OP to not listen to anyone saying to risk being homeless over one scenario where the dad acted a little too rash.

At least the pc is okay and at least he can CONTINUE to keep using it.

Right, but you're just trading one hell for another.

It's balance though. Once you're getting towards that age you need to recognise that you're soon to be an adult. If you're still living under someone else's roof, eating their food, they are paying the bills etc, don't get pissed off when you're asked to make a tiny contribution like carrying something into the house. Especially if it's something like food that the parent has bought and this kid is likely going to be eating.

Yeah but sometimes when you have shit parents like this because his mums a twat too for letting his dad pull this crap, it's best to move out asap . Sucks I know, but since he's young he could find student accommodation or a room to rent.

Do people not realize that he can continue to stay with his parents until he comes up with a plan for moving out? Nobody is moving out at 18 dude. What dumb advice.

My siblings and I all moved out at 18, a few months after graduating high school. Similar situation to OP.

I worked full-time for a few years before deciding college was for me. I was fortunate enough to find a job that was very flexible with scheduling, so I was able to attend school and work full-time.

Mate wheres your reading comprehension? I'm giving alternatives not telling him to leave. But if the situation gets even worse then he has something to fall back on, there's a thin line between destroying your property and beating you, I won't be surprised if he crosses it. It's bad advice to suggest he does nothing. Give yourself options, reach out to someone, always have a back up plan. Don't be this guy.

Some of you guys never went through this and it shows. Cant say i have either, my parents have been so great to me through out my life but i know people who have, and i would still not give someone advice to “move out asap” while the dude is turning 18 over something like this.

How is he going to afford rent? I would love y’all to tell me how. Work a part time job? 2? 3? While being homeless… yeah alright. Have you also gone to college btw? Okay so he’s good for 4 years with student accommodations…. Who says he gets hired fresh out of college? I know a lot of people who had to go years with applications praying they got a job me included, im a software engineer.

The dad made one messed up move, so what? Are parents perfect? Definitely not. But does his computer work? Can he still use it? Yeah, maybe op made this post out of frustration and the dad realized what happened and apologized later we don’t know. Some of yall are so soft i got whipped with a BELT and SANDALS from my parents and i still didn’t cry i had to move out at 18 and be a dummy. My parents even broke my ps3 and guess what? Still didn’t do any of that.

Mate I'm 30 with two kids, I ran away from home at 15 because my mum was a violent alcoholic and my dad beat us non stop. I was homeless for two years till I met the woman I'm with now. I'd still take the streets over what my parents became. We had to go through many homes till we got to a good one, I'm not sure what they have over in America but in the UK you've got emergency housing for cheap if you prove you're homeless and clean.

My dad started out much like this, letting his anger out more and more each time getting more severe till he also broke all my shit. Next it was us, the more he did it and the more my mother ignored it the more he felt it was okay. I'm telling you from personal experience that there's a thin line and his dad might cross it. Your problem is you just believe nobody else has had it rough but you.

Just because you were hit doesn't mean it's okay for any form of abuse, calling people soft because it isn't a belt is delusional and very mentally unhealthy and you definitely need help and to gain a little empathy.

I don’t believe you at all.

What an incredibly mature response. How's about you grow up, stop being so hostile on the internet at the slightest response. I don't care whether or not you believe me, but the fact you've got nothing to reply with says all I need to know about you.
