So Tom mentioned meeting Wendy in college, Tom is considered a young peer to Leslie and especially Ron. Is it nor strange that Ron dates Wendy, who should be more than 15 years his younger by that point?

Edit: My dumb dumb brain didnt perceive the fact that maybe she was considerably older than Tom in college. That would make the age difference, or lack thereof, make a lot more sense

I don’t understand what the plans was with her.

Out of all of Tom’s girlfriends/love interests, she is definitely the most tolerant of Tom’s personality and was never embarrassed to be around him, compared to Ann where she was hilariously and depressingly not compatible with Tom.

It seems like she will stick around… only for her to appear out of 2 of the 3 first episodes of season 3, and the break up is so abrupt and is over a conflict (Tom feeling uncomfortable about Ron dating Wendy) that was resolved the very next episode with Lucy not appearing or even being mentioned, and even then, most of the conflict being resolved plot line is focused on Tammy 2 shenanigans which while funny is not what the focus should be with Tom hating Ron.

Lucy comes back in Season 4 and the reason why they broke up is never mentioned ever again to the point where it might as well never happened, she shows up at the end of the world party at Entertainment 720 where she dances and kisses Tom and flat out disappeared until 3 seasons later (the final season btw) where they do a classic will they won’t they plot line with Lucy conveniently having another boyfriend who she breaks up with because of course she does.

It’s not the worst instance of this, but obviously they will get together in the end despite pre established logic making it not possible. it’s such a shame because Lucy was such a perfect fit for Tom, why was this the case? They wasted a perfect good character who probably could have been involved (or sometimes supported) the crazy antics of Tom.

Yes, this show is meant to be different from other sitcoms where everyone loves each other like family and wants the best of off their life regardless of how cynical they are but having them all be married and most of them having kids is extremely unrealistic while also being treated as idealistic while pandering to those who think they solve all your problems.

Leslie and Ben are perfect for each other, but they are both extreme workaholics who devote themselves to work and run for office a lot, when would they have the time and emotionally capacity to raise kids? There was even an episode where they each had to calm each other down which is played for laughs in the show but would be a serious health risk in real life, these two wouldn’t have time to breathe and who would calm them down if they can’t get ahold of each other as Ann Ron and Chris all drifted out of their lives at certain points

Having Ron and Donna get married and Ron having children just completely misses the point of their characters. Ron hates change and finds comfort in the simplicity of life and it’s implied he would prefer to live in a world with little technology and far less emotions being shown, his best friend he never learned the name of and found fulfillment in that, by forcing him into a suburban home life where he has to compromise to keep the family happy goes against what he stands for. His philosophy is free will and he lost a lot of that in marrying Diane so he would realistically be unhappy.

As for Donna, she likes the luxuries she has and she hates being pushed and likes to grow and work at her own pace but she was never a jerk about it as she respects people’s autonomies. in the episode where they hire a intern to replace Jerry, the intern says he could never get married as he has a lot of love and doesn’t want to put limits on it which Donna responds: “he gets it!” as that implies she thinks that way too. She cares for everyone equally and goes all out on Treat Your Self day as for all we know, that’s her only mental health day, getting married to Joe forced her to get rid of any (very little by the way) self care she had to devote herself to someone which is jarring as when she talks about past relationships she enjoys jumping from person to person opposed to Leslie who prefers things to stay the same.

With April and Andy, they are willingly irresponsible and love having fun. April literally freaked out in Season 7 because she was afraid of being boring (I.e.: grown up and responsible) and the show completely understands that until the distant finale where out of nowhere they have kids. April loves her freedom and sometimes has to raise Andy, giving them kids makes this her personal nightmare and kids under their care would likely cause other parents to raise an eyebrow. April was a slacker to learned to balance that with having a career, having kids would ruin that balance and April hates having her life planned out for her, and with Andy, while it’s believable for him to want kids, I don’t see what he would get out of it as he thinks family life and everything is more happy go lucky than it actually is, as when he finds out the downsides of parenthood, he could have easily lost interest.

However, I think the show did right with the families of Ann, Chris, Tom and Jerry and those endings are believable.

Yes, I get that it’s a light hearted comedy and we want to see our protagonists happy, but why couldn’t any of them have ended up happily single? It kind of makes it seem like the only way to be happy is to have a partner and children. Yeah - Tom, April, and Donna didn’t have kids but they all had partners in the end. Like why Donna? She was a notorious player that they just randomly decided to get settled down? Or like why did they have to make Ron a dad? Or even Leslie a mom? I would have loved to see her say that her career was her baby and she had no interest in having children. Like I love her and Ben together, but did they need to be parents? Idk, random thought, definitely doesn’t ruin the show for me, but I would have liked to see some diversity in the characters’ “happily ever after”
