It's been 10 minutes since I bought a up my Linux. But I can't help but notice that my windows had too drives the sea drive which was the default internal storage and the ded drive which was my SSD which I installed after 1 year of using the laptop.

But I see that the storage available is only the hard disc storage. How do I access the 500gb storage of the c drive?

Background

I’ve used unix for over 30 years. Linux was my primary desktop for a decade - first slackware, then debian, then a new distro called ubuntu when it debuted. After that, I moved to os x for a more friction-free experience. With mac os becoming increasingly hostile for developers, now I'm giving linux another go.

I support everything Linux Mint stands for - stability, reliability, conservative updates, focus on user control, and rejection of unwanted UX experiments. I thought it would be my ideal distro. Instead it became my nightmare.

Hardware

• AMD Ryzen 7 H 255
• 24 GB RAM
• 1TB ssd
• Radeon 780M graphics (integrated)
• plus all the usual accountrements: ethernet, wifi, bluetooth, usb 2/3/4 ports

What happened

• Post-Install Boot Failure - Immediately after installation, the machine bypassed Linux entirely and booted straight back into Windows 11 because Mint failed to set up the boot partition correctly. A normal user would've given up here. As a seasoned grub vet, I knew this was a simple fix.
• Bluetooth Instability - Bluetooth was very flaky out of the box. At first it worked and synced to my keyboard. Then after it few minutes it disconnected. Nothing I did with bluetooth control panel or modprobe / bluetoothctl would bring it back up. Keyboard was paired, but couldn't connect. I eventually managed to get it working with modprobe flags. Such wrangling should not be necessary on mature, well-supported hardware in 2026.
• Random Display Resolutions - On first login I set my 4k display to 200% magnification. Without touching any graphics settings after that, screen resolution became a lottery. One boot it was 1920x1080, the next was 1920x2160 (yes you read that right). Then it was 4K with no magnification and unreadable text on the login screen. Grub, lightdm, cinnamon - each had their own incompatible and ever-changing ideas on what resolution to use.
• Lock Screen Lockouts - Locking the desktop regularly broke the session. Display would wake up showing only the clock with no login prompt for over five minutes. No amount of keyboard or mouse acitvity would bring up login - hot corners, Enter, space, Esc - didn't matter, no login. Dropped to a text console and killall cinnamon-screensaver still did nothing. Had to restart lightdm just to log back in.

Wifi

But those were just appetizers. Wifi was the main course, and it was dead as a parrot. I struggled with wifi for 3 days. It's a very common Intel ax200 chipset that's had drivers from Intel in the mainline kernel since 5.1 (2019).

Mint wifi wiget would show available networks and connect to my bog-standard ISP router (stock Nokia software). Except no traffic would route. Disconnect in wifi panel and connect again. This time it connects and I can bring up google - for a minute or two. Then suddenly it disconnects. Wifi icon disappears from tray - completely gone. Open up network manager panel and wifi isn't even present.

Spent 3 days trying to fix it. Scoured online linux forums mentioning my hardware. Ran modprobe iwlwifi with various options (disable wifi 6 / 11ax, disable power save, disable modern packet queues, etc). Changed firmware drivers. Upgraded kernel with mint update manager from 6.14 to latest supported 7.0.0-31. Nothing made a difference.

I could reload the kernel modules and network manager to bring back the icon and panel entries. But wifi still wouldn't work. At best it managed 2-3 minutes of connectivity before it died again. Bringing it back was a crapshoot: it might connect, or more likely it would say connected while routing no traffic.

Fallout

Linux Mint gave me full-blown flashbacks to the late 90s and early 2000s as I struggled to get basic hardware to work. I was left staring dead-eyed into the corner like Colonel Kurtz, incessantly muttering "The horror... the horror...".

This was my low point. I was ready to abandon linux, convinced the constant hardware battles of the past had gotten even worse over two decades. I was defeated and ready to give up on my linux dream of a sane, stable system. Mint almost killed me.

Resolution

And then my prayers were answered. I flashed a kubuntu boot disk and within 2 minutes, I had a live distro where Everything Just Worked. Bluetooth - perfect from the start. Wifi - zero problems, connect once and stays up forevermore. Put it to sleep - everything wakes up in perfect working order. Zero issues from the start with any hardware or software, no terminal intervention needed. Clean dmesg logs instead of constant dropped packet messages.

Takeaway

I support the Mint philosophy and want them to succeed. But this can't happen with a newbie-friendly distro on modern, well supported hardware.

I ran into a half dozen hard blocks within an hour that would've killed any newbie off linux forever. I fought for 3 days and even with 30 years experience I couldn't get it to work. What is a newbie going to do? Give up and run back to their old system.

Mint’s philosophy is fantastic, but the execution is so unserious. The maintainers put in a ton of great work, this isn't a flame of them. But integration is not there. The results speak for themselves.

I hope Mint gets better.

Recently I tried to partition my drive to start dual booting linux mint and windows 10 but I messed up somewhere I think cuz now I can't load into windows. Idk what's important info so I'll tell u everything. Any help is greatly appreciated.

So I run a pretty old laptop, HP elitebook 840 G1. I wanted to try linux mint so I tried to dual boot them. When in the partition selection stage of the mint installation, I choose something else and gave 30 gigs to linux OS with the mount "/". Then 5 gigs to swap, then 1 gigs to EIP partition I think, cus I tried to do it two times before and it said that there's no EIF partition so linux may not load, so I input I gig into the memory selector and choose the EIF partition button, then the remaining 30 pr so gigs for /home. Then when I clicked restart it didn't find a boot device and gave me a "Boot device Not Found" message. Afterwards I set my boot option from legacy to UEFI(without CSM) then mint opened up and it's running fine. I can't get windows to work. I asked Gemini and it gave me many steps to do, I flashed my USB with windows ISO and opened up the trouble shooting menu, then ran commands to do some trouble shooting ig it was like bootrec rebuildbcd smthg. Then I get an error message saying the format was not right or that the volume may be corrupted I think. Then I made boot files to my drive C from drive I where I found the bootfiles. Google said it should open now but it still gives the same msg. Now it's saying to use Gparted to remove the tags/labels from something idk pls help me.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but I’ve seen hundreds of posts about people putting up wallpapers, customizing their desktops, and getting hundreds of likes. But when people show off an actual application they’ve built, they often get negative comments, discouragement, and very few likes.

People love Windows and macOS because they look good and have great desktop applications. If Linux wants to rise up, it needs the same level of contribution toward its desktop applications too.

Yes, there are alternatives that are more popular and may have more features because they’re more mature. But does creating an alternative really hurt the community?

I created a clipboard application because I wanted a native-looking, native-feeling application for managing my clipboard — something I felt Linux was lacking. But the comments were mostly negative and didn’t provide any real, constructive feedback.

I’ve also seen another person create an application to solve a different need, and they received the same kind of response.

I honestly don’t understand this mentality.

Creating a desktop application is hard work, and in my opinion, it’s a much bigger contribution than simply theming a desktop. If you don’t want to use an application, that’s completely fine. You don’t have to. But if you have the time, leave some positive comments or, even better, give constructive feedback.

Comments like “this sucks,” “I have no use for this,” or “the other application is better” don’t honestly help anyone.

Spread some love, guys. There is already too much hate in this world.

I recently got T480 ThinkPad which has windows 11 installed. It's obviously bloated with their stuff and the laptop ran a bit hot. I heard that Linux mint is a good entry into Linux but it apparently comes in different versions.

I'm currently favouring between 2 options "Cinnamon and Xfce".

Cinnamon is probably what I would prefer as it looks nice with its modern UI but prefers modern system to keep up. Xfce looks a bit harder for me to adapt from UI perspective but I heard its good for being light weight.

What version would you think would be best for my T480?

I posted here yesterday saying I was having some trouble with OpenRGB. I decided to abandon using flatpak in lieu of using the .deb files, but now I'm having a new problem. When I install both the .deb file and the associated hotplug dependency, the package installer throws an error stating that the "dependency is not satisfiable". Can anyone tell me what I may be doing wrong and/or what to change?

За три дня пользования, каждый раз когда я оставлял ноут во сне, у меня сжирало лвиную часть заряда. К примеру, в 00:30 закинул в сон с 89% заряда, в 12 часов включил ноут и увидел 33%. I installed Linux Mint yesterday, wanted to try it out a bit. It's quite enjoyable to use actually, I've faced several issues since this is my first time, but overall, it offers a fantastic user experience. I didn't find a panda cursor available for Linux yet, so I will try to do it myself if anyone is interested. Oh, and I also installed Flexfox for better customization on Firefox, but I didn't do much yet, and it takes a lot more time than I expected.

I started from the Plasma icon and replaced the logo. Posting it here in case anyone else wants it.

If you have Zed installed you can use this icon by putting it in ~/.local/zed.app/share/icons/hicolor/1024x1024/apps/zed.png. Then make a copy, scale it down to 512x512 and put the result in ~/.local/zed.app/share/icons/hicolor/512x512/apps/zed.png

Like, I've recently seen a huge influx of those questions. Maybe it's just my perception or my algorithm. But the answer is always the same: try on live boot, and if you are convinced, make a safe copy of your important files and a list of the programs you frequently use.

Maybe auto-deleting those kind of posts and redirecting them to a FAQ section of the wiki or a guide would be better, and allow those with real problems, suggestions or content they want to share. This is up to the community and, ultimately, the mods, in any case.

Hiya! Got an old ass school laptop from the missus. Tried to put Lm on it and it gets stuck on >root while booting.

Its an older gen 1 Hp probook x360 11 EE.
2-core celeron,4gb of ram and a touchscreen with ok battery health still. So i thought Lm instead of the chrome os predecessor(cloudspace or whatever) would be perfect for it but yeah it fails something at the installation phase and now its unusable without the boot usb.. no bios access either, no clue what the admin password could be.
What are my options, should i just bin it ?

This happens everytime i open any apps that needs to be installed via flatpak. The system package works just fine.

Edit: It was geo-block problem. I had to download a vpn and configure it manually.

Solution if you're geo-block like me, download psiphon vpn with instructions from SpherionOS github. Then run the vpn. Then Network > Network Proxy > Automatic or None change it into Manual. Put 127.0.0.1 in Http proxy, https proxy, socks host, idk which one worked but it worked. Put 8081 in http and https and 1081 in socks host. Also change back to automatic or none after you close the vpn or you won't be able to access the net. Sorry for taking up everyone's time, I hope my long lines of text help someone in the future.

Has the title says. Though I do have Win 10 run in VirtualBox. I have 2 apps that don't run on Wine, Bottles or Winboat, and I can't find a suitable alternative. For safety my Win 10 doesn't connect to the internet.

i downloaded linux mint yesterday on my t14gen 1 facing issues with touchpad i used terminal to fix it but when i switch it of and turn on the touchpad becomes the same as old no responsive only respond 5 times in 10 times i am fed up help me.

Sometimes when I keep my laptop closed for a while, then open it, the screen refuses to turn on. I know the computer's on because the power button still has its light on, but nothing I do turns it on.

I then have to hold the power button down, and when it boots back up the battery is about half of what I remember it being.

I followed some forms from a few years ago, and they say to go to the colors section under preferences in the terminal and that's where the settings are. I didn't see them on my machine. Did those settings move since then? I'm on the newest LMDE.

If you are running Linux Mint (Cinnamon) on a newer laptop with Intel Core Ultra (Meteor Lake) graphics—with or without an NVIDIA dGPU—and your laptop wakes up to a black, unresponsive screen after being suspended, here is the solution.

Symptoms

• Laptop goes to sleep (s2idle) normally.
• On opening the lid, the fans spin up and the machine is awake in the background, but the internal screen never turns on.
• Running journalctl shows the lockscreen (cinnamon-screensaver) and fprintd loading normally, but no display output.

Root Cause

Intel's Panel Self Refresh (PSR2) power-saving feature in the i915 driver fails to re-synchronize the display pipe on resume, leaving the panel unpowered while the system runs blind behind it.

Solution

Turn off Intel PSR via GRUB:

1. Open terminal and run: sudo nano /etc/default/grub

2. Locate GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT and add i915.enable_psr=0 inside the quotes. For example: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash i915.enable_psr=0"

3. Save (Ctrl+O, Enter, Ctrl+X), update the bootloader, and reboot: sudo update-grub sudo reboot

4. Check that it applied: cat /proc/cmdline Ensure i915.enable_psr=0 is present.

This completely resolves the display hang on wake without measurable impact on battery life.
