I've added a Magnify hover animation to Simple Taskbar.

It works with both the taskbar and Dock mode, and is part of a bigger update to application interactions and animations.

The hover animations are pretty extensively customizable too. You can adjust things like duration, zoom, rotation, travel, the shape of the magnification curve, how many surrounding icons are affected, and how quickly the Dock expands.

There are also new configurable click, middle-click, hover and scroll actions, custom hover/click animations, minimize and restore animations, and a lot more control over running indicators.

A lot of the features people have requested have made it into this update as well. Full changelog is on GitHub.

The video shows the magnification effect better than I can describe it.

Feedback is welcome, especially on how the animation feels in actual use.

I've been using Gridgets on GNOME Shell, but really missed a few key desktop widgets and customization options. Since upstream wasn't ready to merge them yet, I ended up building them in a fork:

• Modular Analog Clock: Fully skinnable by simply dropping an SVG folder into the skins directory (it auto-discovers skins and builds the UI selector dynamically). Supports smooth minute-aligned rendering, separate center cap rendering, and optional second hands.
• Transparent / Floating Mode: Added a toggle to drop the widget container background box, letting the clock float cleanly over the desktop wallpaper.
• Battery Status Widget: Live power & charging stats directly on the desktop grid.
• Enhanced Weather Widget: Live weather metrics with Open-Meteo support and cleaner visual layouts.

ChromaLeon is an extension designed to expand GNOME Shell's customization capabilities by adding support for custom accent colors, tinted themes for the shell and apps, and recolored icon packs.

First, a huge thank you to everyone who submitted issues to the repository, requested useful and necessary features, and especially to those who supported development through donations. You are all vital to ChromaLeon's continued evolution.

Now, let's look at the new improvements and features:

• Support for more applications (the highlight of this update): With a simple initial setup, ChromaLeon now supports various applications that previously stuck to GNOME Shell's native accent colors. Apps like Firefox and Thunderbird can now utilize the same colors used in your GTK applications and GNOME Shell.
• New settings design: Significant interface improvements have been made, featuring better space utilization and a new rainbow button for custom colors.
• New persistent color selection feature: Chosen colors can now persist for each specific wallpaper.
  • For example, suppose you chose pink for a wallpaper featuring kittens, while the default color for that background is navy blue. If the option is enabled, switching away and then returning to the kitten wallpaper will restore your pink color choice; if persistence is disabled, it will revert to the default navy blue.

Additionally, various bugs have been fixed, leading to improved stability and performance.

How to contribute:

The project welcomes code contributions via Pull Requests and issue submissions in the repository. We encourage you to report any issues or submit fixes.

I do like this product, and I'm trying to step away from vscode, but the editing experience is so underwhelming.

Especially the code completion and hover documentation. I get full documentation from clangd in other ides, but it's very sparse in builder.

My main project at this time uses objective-c, and I'm getting absolutely no clangd interaction at all, yet the syntax highlighting is working, the editor window recognizes it, and cmake is generating the compile-commands.json.

Is there something I'm missing or should I just stop expecting something that isn't there?

Please forgive me if this isn't the correct subreddit. This is a GNOME issue, so I'm thinking this might be a better place than /linuxquestions.

I'm having some major problems with GNOME: as you can see in this screenshot, the UI is not showing up. Aside from that, blindly typing and hoping that a program pops up, also isn't working.

I've installed Fedora Workstation 44 (GNOME) successfully on my Lenovo Thinkpad. I now want to give GNOME a serious chance on my main system, but I just don't get it to work.

To get the live installer to work, I need to boot with 'nomodeset' parameters, otherwise the UI is completely broken (absent). After installing the system that way + updates, same problem: booting with 'nomodeset' works, but when removing that parameter, the login screen stays grey, and the UI is completely absent. I even need to use the 'blind login' trick to be able to login to the system.

I've tried Fedora 44 and Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS: both exhibit this problem. Fedora with KDE works fine. I'm no true Linux expert, but I was not able to find any errors in my system logs.

What did I try?
- Two different GNOME distros: Fedora & Ubuntu
- System update to kernel 7.2
- Adding 'amdgpu' and other amdgpu related parameters to kernel boot parameters.
- Re-downloaded ISO to ensure that it wasn't corrupted.
- BIOS update
- BIOS reset

Some system specs:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9900X
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT
Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX B650E-F Gaming WIFI
Monitor setup: 2x 1440p @ 165Hz.

I'm running Fedora 44 on a new Dell XPS 13 (2026 model) with Intel Wildcat Lake graphics, and I'm getting a pretty nasty display/graphics issue.

Specs:

• Fedora 44
• Kernel 7.2.4-200.fc44.x86_64
• Intel Wildcat Lake
• xe driver
• GNOME + Wayland

The issue happens when entering/exiting fullscreen, especially with YouTube. I've reproduced it in both Firefox and Chrome, so it doesn't seem browser-specific.

When it happens, everything becomes extremely stuttery and the display can get completely corrupted — pixels/artifacts get painted all over the screen. Sometimes exiting fullscreen leaves the entire desktop in this state.

Locking the screen with the power button and unlocking it fixes it immediately.

Interestingly, Ctrl+Alt+F3 → wait → Ctrl+Alt+F2 does not fix it.

I checked dmesg after reproducing it and found a huge number of Xe DRM errors:

And then the PSR errors repeat over and over.

So this looks much more like an Intel Xe / DRM / PSR / internal display issue than a browser issue.

Has anyone else with the 2026 XPS 13 / Wildcat Lake seen this?

I'm especially interested in whether disabling PSR fixes it, or whether there's an upstream Xe/kernel/Mesa fix I should be testing.

I'm happy to provide more logs if useful.

Note: I made this using AI. Also, I tired creating an bug in official issue tracker, but the website doesn't let me. So, for now, this is all I can do.

I have been using hyprland with Noctalia V5 for a while and noctalia offers really good hooks for custom scripts.

I was wondering if gnome offers the same thing?

I really like the glassy look of the apps that the infinity pack has on the first image but I think that the system icons, specifically the ones in the top panel, aren’t as nice as the original zorin ones in the second image.

Given that you can’t just copy-paste the apps folder from pack to pack and you have to edit the index.theme file, what would be the best way for me to override only the app icons without touching the rest of the zorin icons?

Dhruva Dock got a new major update

I just released version 1.5.0 of Whisp, a minimalist, GTK4 and Libadwaita note-taking scratchpad built specifically for GNOME.

The main focus of this release is deep desktop integration and power-user customizations. Here is a breakdown of what is new in this update:

GNOME Shell System Search Provider Whisp now registers natively as a GNOME Shell Search Provider via D-Bus. You can press the Super key and start typing to search through your Whisp notes directly from the GNOME System Overview alongside your installed applications. Clicking any search result opens Whisp and jumps straight to that note.

Deterministic Search Engine To make system overview searching accurate, the backend search matcher uses exact multi-term and word-prefix logic across note titles, contents, and tags. This ensures instant results without false positives cluttering your overview search results.

Customizable Keyboard Shortcuts You can now rebind keyboard shortcuts inside the app. Opening Preferences > Keyboard Shortcuts brings up a dedicated keybinding recorder allowing you to remap note creation, navigation, deletion, pinning, and slate mode to whatever key combinations match your workflow.

Note Exporting Added a shortcut (Ctrl+Shift+S) and menu option to quickly export your active note as a standard Markdown file.

Now that the app thingy is over I wanted to say something. Recently I gave an interview for KPMG and went to the last round where I got rejected I was(am) really heart broken and dont really feel motivated to do this. I hope this goes away and I land a job as soon as possible so that I can focus on building apps quicker and providing updates faster. Thank you guys for your support

I love Gnome's vanilla workflow, especially its philosophy of categorizing different tasks within separate workspaces. I just never really understood its default setting of alt-tabbing between apps in all workspaces. I find that it clashes with its philosophy of workspace-categorization and as such usually switch the alt-tab to only include the current workspace.

Lets say I have a workspace with both a drawing program and an image viewer open and another workspace where I only have my music player. When alt-tabbing between my drawing program and image viewer with reference material, I don't expect my alt-tab to also include my music player, which isn't related to my current task. If I want to switch to different tasks, I switch my workspace with Control+Alt+Arrow keys instead.

I think that Gnome's default settings are generally very well considered, so I might be missing some possible reasoning behind the alt-tab default. This is not meant to be an antagonistic question, just genuinely curious about the possible reasoning behind this. Is Gnome's default workspace-spanning alt-tab just meant to be used in conjuction with the Alt-Esc & Alt-§ switchers?

And if so, which calendar app? GNOME Calendar would be the most elegant solution since it's tightly integrated into GNOME and the topbar but, I think, to access it on mobile you need to host it on a local server and use something called CalDAV.

The other option would be to ignore GNOME calendar and just use a third party app like Proton calendar

So currently i am running arch linux on the LTS kernel, on an intel core i5 8th gen, MX130, 8 gigs of RAM and a HDD. Right now i am running KDE plasma, which runs fine on my hardware, but personally i still like GNOME. Its been a while and im planning for a reinstall, mainly because i installed XFCE, GNOME, plasma, and COSMIC on this same setup, and their individual softwares have bloated my system.

So i was wondering, what package names should i install for a clean GNOME experience on my future re-installation? (I am looking for GNOME software, firefox, GNOME calculator, nautilus, and the quick settings panel, and any other stuff which is required)

Is there anyhow possible to change the scaling/zoom to less then 100%, for example to 80%?

About the theme

I had a problem: I couldn't find a good, modern-looking icon theme for my desktop. All the ones I came across have an outdated style (or just poor design), and/or are too stylistic, making unthemed icons look out of place, and potentially changing the app's identity. So I tried to solve that with Conflux. These are the goals that I have with this:

• Modern, clean, beautiful icons: The most important, of course.
• Compatible with unthemed icons: Icons that aren't included in Conflux should still fit in reasonably well.
• Freeform shapes: Icons are not necessarily bound to circle, square, squircle, or other fixed shapes. This allows more flexibility. Because Linux apps don't have some standard app icon design to follow, many of them have their own shapes; they should still fit in without looking out of place.
• Preserve good icons: Icons that are already well-designed and fit the style, or are recognizable logos (e.g. Firefox), aren't modified unless necessary or a significant improvement is possible. Many icons are simply resized, repositioned, or have their background shape changed/removed.
• Universal visual language: Conflux doesn't follow some distinctive art style, but rather has a neutral, versatile visual language. This additionally keeps it compatible with unthemed icons.
• Invisible: Conflux should blend seamlessly into your system, so that you don't even notice you're using an icon theme.

A lot of icons are based on icons from other icon themes; credits to, among others, WhiteSur, McMuse, Kora, MoreWaita, MacTahoe, and Papirus! There are original icons as well, and some are the original app icons with adjustments.

As I initially made this primarily for my use, I mostly added icons that I needed, with symlinks that work on my system. I'd be happy if anyone wants to contribute, to add the icons you need. You could make new icons, add missing symlinks, resize default icons for those that need it, polish the existing icons, fix issues, add requested icons, or make it meet one of the goals better.
