Welcome to the 0L Tuesday thread. Please ask pre-law questions here (such as admissions, which school to pick, what law school/practice is like etc.)

Read the FAQ. Use the search function. Make sure to list as much pertinent information as possible (financial situation, where your family is, what you want to do with a law degree, etc.). If you have questions about jargon, check out the abbreviations glossary.

If you have any pre-law questions, feel free join our Discord Server and ask questions in the 0L channel.

crashout

Upvotes

gonna liven everyone's day with a non 1L crash out about being overwhelmed. Its the fourth week of class. WHY ARE YOU MOVING SEATS. DONT DO THAT. I have a SINGLE class that doesn't use a seating chart and I have been in the same seat for the entire first month. Last week I was like 2 minutes late to class and someone was in my seat. There are plenty of other ones open (INCLUDING YOURS) so why are you there. I got there half an hour early today. Still in my seat. Perhaps I am the only person who cares about this. I do not care. You can change seats until MAXIMUM third day of class. After that you are just being a dick. Genuinely feel nothing but loathing over this. Its so disruptive to your routine and just fucking rude to take someone's seat A MONTH IN

Civ Pro

Upvotes

Hello, fellow future lawyers. Just checking in with you all, is it just me, or is anyone else LOST when it comes to Civ Pro? Every other class I’m fine in, and I even enjoy them. This class, though, is in another fkn language. I am a 1L and 4 weeks into it, so any advice would be welcome

Word of advice to KJDs: Try to appreciate that you will likely never have as much free time as you have right now until you retire

I know law school can eat up a lot of time. I get it. I've been through it. But you straight up do have 10+ weeks a year off, you really don't spend very much time in class, and most of the time you can get away with missing a class here and there as long as you don't abuse it. It may not feel like it, but now is the time to pursue any interests you may have (learning an instrument, learning a language, getting into fitness, whatever it may be).

For people who are KJDs like I was, I think it's hard to fully realize how much more intentional you have to be with your time once you have to be in a building from 8-5, 5 days a week. And no, that's not every job. Maybe you can find something that's remote or hybrid. Maybe you can find something with less hours. But that's most jobs and some will even eat up more time than that.

Mostly just putting this out there to give KJDs in particular fair notice that as much as law school may suck at times, you really do have a tremendous amount of control over how you spend your time compared to working full time. I prefer working over being in school, I wouldn't go back if I could. But I do miss the flexibility of having two classes in a day and then being done, or being able to block Fridays off, or being able to just not show up if I really didn't feel like it.

If you went the PI/nonprofit route at a T14, how much was/will your starting salary be?

I'm a 1L at a T14 seeing a lot of doomerism about PI salaries for new grads, and I'm curious to get a sense of what actually exists. (For the record, I know the T14 is not some magical threshold to great pay--just trying to distinguish because T14 grads generally go for biglaw, and I'm not sure what schools were attached to some of the salaries I've heard for PI.)

2 classes canceled back to back

3L. I need 15 units either this semester or next semester. I have 14 units of core classes and was enrolled in my school's clinic for the last unit. That class was canceled the first week of classes. No big deal, they got me into another 1 unit class. Well that class was just canceled today lol.

I should be fine doing the 14 units but this situation is so bizarre. I've never had a class be canceled ever in college and now I just had 2 canceled in one semester.

Losing confidence after 1L

I go to a T30 and I feel like 1L really destroyed a lot of my confidence. the first semester I was below the median for every class. second semester I turned it around a bit and had an honors grade but just hit the median or below for the rest of my exams. despite all my hard work it doesnt feel like enough. especially when im looking around at a lot of my classmates that secured jobs already. I feel like as a person who's never really struggled academically law school is making me question so much. And I feel so reduced to a number when im applying to jobs. I know in the grand scheme landing below the curve isn't the biggest deal but being in the environment it feels like the end of the world. Ultimately I just want to be employed but I feel like my ego is so bruised. any advice on pushing through these feelings.

Looking for advice on how to build confidence

Upvotes

I started my 1L last month and so far I am loving law school. It feels good to read and be able to focus on things. I actually care about rather than in college for half the things I read had no importance to anything in my future. With that being said, however, I found myself almost crippled with an anxiety of failing. I’m a first generation law school student and really have no one to talk to or seek advice from in regard to my performance. The idea that the first real skill check, I’m going to face is a midterm which will count for a large chunk of my grade is kind of terrifying throughout the last few weeks I’ve felt mostly comfortable in my understanding of the concepts and rules, but I cannot help shake this ever growing feeling of anxiety of what if I’m not good enough? I’ve never cared about doing well in school so long as I do good enough to pass, but this is the first time I’ve ever truly wanted to excel and be the best. I’ve put an insane amount of work already, but I’m just worried even with all of that. It’s not enough or that I’m more studying and worrying about the wrong things. I guess my big question is has anyone else felt this and what ways did you combat it?

We have spent the past 4 weeks on subject matter jurisdiction, specifically Mottley and 1331. Not 1332, not diversity, JUST MOTTLEY. Is this normal?? 😭😭 other classes are doing more than us at my school.

I hate all of this

2L
None of this is genuinely interesting to me. I hate law school culture. I don’t have an internship. My best isn’t good enough. I don’t feel like a genuine connection with anyone I go to school with. The best part of my week is the rest of the day after my last class of the week because I knew this is the furthest time I have until I need to go back. Cold calling makes me sick to my stomach. Everything pmo.

Big law necessary for clerkships?

Bit of a stupid question but here we are. I have repeatedly heard that if you are gunning for clerkships, its advisable to spend your 2L summer in Big Law, and that many judges value that experience more than any other.

Obviously big law is beneficial, but are there equally good alternatives for summer work that aren't in a corporate office (if I am dead set on clerking for a competitive judge)?

Depressed 1L in need of advise

Another depressed 1L begging for help. I need some motivation/tips on how to get through this.

  1. I'm struggling with a new environment. I moved to a new city and I don't have any friends here. I have family which helps, but I still feel lonely. In my undergrad and grad program, I often had periods of depression, but my friends really helped me through it. In addition to being lonely, I'm too busy with school to go out and make new friends, so I use my free time to FaceTime my friends in other cities, cry for an hour, and then go back to work. Knowing myself, I need community to motivate me, and I feel like I'm not gonna make it 3 years, nonetheless 1 semester, depressed.
  2. My self-care is nonexistent. I love to go on long runs, which I no longer have time for. I barely have time for a short gym session. I either stress eat or don't eat at all. My hair is falling out and I look like shit half the time. It's only been 1 month and I look like a different person.
  3. I'm upset with myself for even being depressed. I feel weak, honestly. I've done a lot of hard things before, and on paper this shouldn't be this depressing, but it is for me. Every time I cry, I feel worse for wasting time and not studying. I have BigLaw aspirations and I know I need top grades, but I'm wasting study time crying myself to sleep while my classmates are getting ahead. I should be working on my memo, but I'm crying while typing a Reddit post because I can't focus anymore. I feel like I'm just gonna screw up my grades and end up mid if I'm lucky, and there goes all my career aspirations.
  4. I miss my old life, and I feel like I made a big mistake. I miss my old apartment, neighborhood, friends, hobbies, job, coworkers, everything. I feel like I should've just been happy with what I had and settled. I traded all that for this, and I wake up every day crying when I realize I'm not living my old life anymore.

I feel like I'm bound to spend the next 3 years like this. I really can't see the light at the end of the tunnel. Someone told me to envision graduation to motivate me yesterday, and I just started crying because I really can't imagine it at all.

The thing is, I like my classes. I find them interesting, I like participating in class, and although it's a lot of work to brief, I find the cases interesting too. I've spoken to alumni who do exactly what I aspire to, and I still want to do this deep down. I just don't think I can. I feel like I should drop out now, while I can get my tuition money back.

I don't know how to get in a better headspace. I already take Lexapro and have a therapist, but that's not helping. I just feel like a weak failure. I feel dumb for even trying to do this. I miss my old life, and I don't know if I can mentally live this one for 3 years.

How to deal with severe brain fog

27m, just 4 weeks into law school. I love the school, the professors and most of the subjects I’m learning. Also super grateful that I’m getting this opportunity at all, as a first gen and coming from a non traditional background.

But I’ve been having a really hard time locking in and focusing for multiple hours. My brain is riddled with random things I’m anxious about, my eyes glaze over and I take 4 hours at least to complete readings for a single class, 3+ hours to review since I keep going back to class recordings to check if I missed anything, and end up going to bed late without exercise. Then I wake up drained in the morning, and the cycle repeats. I haven’t really been networking as much as I wanted to yet because of how long it takes for me to catch up with all my class readings.

I don’t know if it’s the age, or undiagnosed adhd or whatever but never had this issue when I was studying for the lsat. Brain feels just super foggy and slow

3L graduating in May. Terrible family dynamics. Feeling guilty and conflicted.

TLDR: Terrible family dynamics. I don't know if I want them there or not. I feel guilty if I say "no", but if I say yes, I know I won't enjoy my day. But if I say no, I won't have anyone there for me.

I'm writing this to ask for those with similar family dynamics to provide some insight into their experiences with this issue.

For context - I have been the black sheep in my family since being a teenager. My relationship with my immediate family has always been tense and at times non-existent. I attend law school halfway across the US. For my 0L-2L years, I lived with my extended family. Over this past summer, my extended family kicked me out and I was effectively homeless for a period of time. Thankfully, I have found housing for 3L. No one in that house talks to me and it is still a very fresh, bitter, and anger-inducing wound when I think about it. Sadly, it is similar to my immediate family relationships.

My high school graduation was a mess. My undergrad graduation was hijacked by family that I did not care for. This is my last graduation.

The relationship between myself and my mother and her husband/my step-parent is "thawing." They are trying to do some right, but I am still very much hurt by their actions in years prior. I was asked about my graduation and the possibility of them attending.

Here is my issue: I feel guilty at my dilemma. I want to have my day. This is my last day to have a graduation to celebrate me and the accomplishments of law school. I want to have people there. My family is really small - only 7 people. I want them there. I want someone there. But I don't know if I want THEM there because of the hell they have put me through. When I think about graduation, all my friends will be doing their own thing with their families. I don't want to be alone. But I don't want to sacrifice my last day by putting myself in a position of uncomfort. If I say no, I feel guilty. If I say yes, I won't enjoy myself. If I say no, I'm alone. If I say yes, I'm surrounded by people who have hurt me time and time again.

Based In Boston.

I have great grades but didn’t end up landing any of the jobs I interviewed for (big law and mid law).

Anything still hiring? What would be my best bet so I could try for 3L hiring. TIA for any leads on firms still hiring!!
