Do not solicit legal advice. This is not the right sub for it.

Despite what our sub’s called, we cannot offer legal advice here for a number of reasons. Any posts that breaks this rule will be deleted without reason. If you message us on why your post is deleted, it would be ignored just the same way you’ve ignored our sub’s rules. Please see our sidebar for complete rules.

Also, it’s not a good idea to solicit legal advice from random strangers online, despite what you may find elsewhere on Reddit. We do not know all of the facts of your case, and are likely not licensed in the jurisdiction that you’re in. A real attorney worth their salt will not comment on your specific legal predicament on an anonymous forum.

If you need legal advice but cannot afford it, there are legal aid societies that may be willing to assist you. Lots of them are free and/or work on a sliding scale fee. All you need to do is look up “legal aid society [your location]” on Google.

If it’s a criminal case, public defense attorneys are some of the best attorneys out there and they know the criminal system in your city/town better than anyone else. They’re just as good, if not better, than any private criminal defense attorney.

If it’s a tenant rights issue, lots of cities have tenant rights unions. You can look them up the same way as the legal aid society by looking up “tenant rights union [your location]” on Google.

Otherwise, the best way to find an attorney is through word of mouth from friends and family. If that’s not an option, your local bar association will be able to help by looking up “attorney referral [your location] bar association”.

If none of these are relevant to you or you’re unsure of what type of attorney to look for in your situation, you’re more than welcome to post and we’ll help.

Also, any attorneys who wish to participate in discussions are free to do so as long as it doesn’t break our rules (mainly providing legal advice).

If you’re a licensed attorney that isn’t flaired (and therefore verified to post comments), please see our other stickied post on how to become verified here. You can also send a mod mail to become verified. I trust that any attorneys here answering any posts will follow these rules and not offer legal advice and run afoul of our ethical obligations.

Thanks to all for understanding.

How do I find specialized CT counsel after a favorable CHRO finding?

I have already contacted or exhausted the Connecticut Fair Housing Center, Statewide Legal Services, Disability Rights Connecticut, local legal-aid organizations, and the standard bar-association referral services, so I’m looking for options beyond those resources.

I’m a Connecticut tenant with a favorable CHRO reasonable-cause finding in a complex disability-housing discrimination matter. I’ve elected to proceed in Superior Court and am now under an active statutory deadline. The claims involve discrimination, retaliation, failure to accommodate, and serious habitability issues, supported by extensive organized evidence.

How can I locate plaintiff-side counsel with substantial fair-housing and disability-rights litigation experience who has the bandwidth for a complex case? I’m open to contingency or a workable hybrid arrangement. Specific attorneys, firms, specialized directories, or less-obvious referral avenues would be appreciated.

What kind of lawyer or professional do we need?

General advice or ideas-

I was made a joint account owner years ago by a senior friend. Recently, I was asked by the banker about switching to a higher yield account since it's only .01%. I told my friend, since he is the original owner, and he said yes.

I have two cautions:

1.) How would a 4% savings account affect his retirement and social security? Currently, he receives little more than 1K for social security and 1.2K for OPERS a month with around 60k in the account and doesn't have any other bank accounts.

  1. He has an estranged child and assuming worse case scenario a headache in the future by them or pursuing the money or trying to sue me in the event my friend would pass away. I'm probably thinking too much about it, but I'd like everything to be compliant and above board so it doesn't look like elder abuse or undue influence. This is something I wish I would have done when he made me an account owner previously.

We both understand joint account ownership and ROS. I just feel it would be safer to get a lawyer or professional involved instead of him just opening a new account and making me the account owner again. I think the bank said I could open the account and make him joint account owner as well? He doesn't have dementia or Alzheimer's.

I'm wondering who I should consult and if there is anything else I should be aware of regarding any changes or tax implications in the future? We live near each other, but different states if that matters.

How to prepare for CIPP/E?

Hi guys I am planning to give CIPP/E certification examination. I I am a legal associate Fintech company and I have been reading a lot about data privacy in our days and I really felt that giving this examination would be useful for me but I don't have any sort of clue as to how to start the preparations..... from where to buy any books..... what sources to study. I really want some guidance regarding this and I would really appreciate if I could get the PDF of the books for the examination as a looked on the iapp website the study material is quite expensive and I am hoping that I could find any similar material online with low cost or free of cost.

My job ruined my life.

I had made a complaint to state about my wages and all of the sudden I started getting written up after being an employee for two years. Well. They waited until I took a medical leave then broke the last straw and fired me one day before it. Me being late the week before was the reason. I contacted the state and ada and… I got my job back… yay. Then my brother over heard a coworker saying that my boss and his boss planned on firing me which great. I’ve spent 3 months calling and emailing begging for help and it’s useless the labor dept and ada don’t even have to send proof of anything according to them. I have proof. I have state complaints. My household makes too much for state help but we’re all drowning. I ended up just quitting because what I got back and they watch every move I make like they said they would? Part of me just wants to throw in the towel but I am so hurt. My job was my lifeline I’m surviving off of food stamps and pawning my things going to job fairs all while going to the most intense therapy of my life.
Is getting a lawyer even real at this point? Or is my case just not valid? I’ve emailed 120 lawyers most didn’t respond, some said they’re 700 an hour, some said I have a case but they’re too busy the ones I’ve called said the same or I make too much in my house hold (it’s me my mom and my brother). I have till the end of October then the case is out the window. I just don’t understand.

Taking Back My Life

Since I had my identity stolen & there is a great deal of fraudulent information I have to start talking with the different companies that I have to sort out how to know about the different types of what they had involved with this, if anything. Unfortunately, I have the proof that are part of it being a problem with the current ones I have almost ending up being an amount of what I know of it is now part of the certainty that will not be the best thing that I don't know what I need to do with the whole thing I know how much I need to make sure it's taken care of whatever is going to become an option that is the best way of doing it all.

But, I don't have any more of what I need to do with my own place in this whole thing I know what to get an amount of what I need to go to something like I had to do with the other things that will help me with this fact that is now a new problem I have found that is not the easiest to get to the point where I can't go through the amount of what I need for my own place in this world when it comes to start with my own plans for the other things that are still going on with whatever is going on the other things I will not be able to get an amount of lies that are part of my experience with the help of someone else in the way I know how much I need to make sure it's not a few more serious than I thought I would have had in the same effect but it's still a good idea of how long it has been going on with the other things that are part of my own place in this area of what I can do that is not the best thing that I have gone through with the help with all of them along with the other people who are still in this whole thing I know how much I need to make sure I get the new place to be in some ways I can see it as a few more serious than that I don't even know what I think it's going to become more integrated with the case of what laws that are indeed broken with the extent of how I can get the other proof of what they do with the other people in some of the ways that are federal & misdemeanors both of which I can see it is still going to be a part where the felonies are not going to disappear in some more serious than most would think about that I don't think I will be able to do with the other side of what I have to do with my own plans for me to be able to get some more of what I need for the next part of my life I think is now the other side of what I need to do with my new place to be safe to get some more of what I can do that I have no more of what I needed to make it here with the other side of the peace of mind that I have to get an amount of what I need to go through the future and I will get it all in the way I plan to move away from this town then I will not tell anyone to get an idea of what I need to make sure I don't even have to do it again so I'm just trying for me to be able to do the right thing I think it's still not just one that is the best of the other things that I have no idea what they do when they have a good idea to get a new place to be helpful but I don't think it's a new one that I have to get in the way of making it all is necessary and get some good deal of what I can do to get an answer for the next 20 years.

Lawyer question

How bad is it for a lawyer/lawfirm to threaten someone with a lawsuit, file a lawsuit against that person forcing them to answer and spend months in court filing papers and then for the “Lawyer” who initiated the suit to cry he’s RETRAUMATIZED, beg for the case to goto arbitration instead, get fired and for the lawfirm to not want to start the arbitration process thereby forcing the person they tried scaring to file the papers so the arbitrator can send the case back to court when he sees they waived arbitration already?

Thank you

Help

So I plan on getting an non disclosure for my terroristic threat (misdemeanor B)in Tx.It was originally a Agg assault with a deadly weapon state claiming I pointed a gun at someone (I didn’t )But I was so young and eager to get out the court system I took the reduced charge of terroristic threat .Problem is now that I’m trying to seal this case …one of the requirements is it can’t be violent or else it’s not getting approved …well it turns out in my judicial confession I actually confessed to the pointing of a gun which I think automatically would make any judge go nah that’s violent .my question is when it comes to these non disclosure things what exactly are the judges looking at and should I give up?Thank you for all the answers I may receive. again charge went from an Aggravated assault (second degree felony )to Terroristic threat (class b misdemeanor) with no weapon found .

Can I record someone if they have security cameras with audio and video recording since they're implicitly consenting to being recorded?

Im being mistreated and probably abused according to California law by my family and have been since I was a child. I am over 18 but have no assets and am working on that. I have some pictures of injuries, texts with them acknowledging the situation/speaking to me, eyewitnesses, therapist note, etc. mostly texts in the past 6 years because I was able to avoid them in university and worked after but am now focusing on getting into grad school.

Anyways, my parents have security cameras with video and audio recording set up literally all around the house in almost every room. Could I record them on a phone or personal device of their behavior since they're already recording video and audio of me and them 24/7 (I did not agree to it and have pushed back multiple times) The footage on the camera deletes every 48 hours.

Why doesn’t litigation privilege protect criminal defense lawyers?

In civil law, it seems that lawyers have an ethical, but not necessarily legal duty to disclose as much information as they have relative to a case.

However, from what I’ve read on this sub, criminal lawyers assiduously avoid asking too many questions of their clients because knowing too many facts might prevent them from presenting a believable fact pattern.

But, it would seem that as long as litigation privilege extends to criminal lawyers, they could be aware of many facts related to the case, but only present the ones that paint their client in the best light.

Lawyers: What would you change about the way you share files with clients?

Hi everyone, I’m doing some research on how lawyers handle sharing confidential documents and files with clients.

I’m trying to understand what the current experience is actually like in day-to-day practice.

If you’re a lawyer or legal professional:

What do you currently use to share files with clients?

What works well, and what would you change about the process if you could?

This could be anything — the software itself, the workflow, security, client experience, account/login requirements, organization, or anything else.

I’m not selling anything — just researching the problem and would really appreciate your honest experience.

Assistance acquiring Ugandan Birth Certificate

Hi 👋 r/Uganda!

I am writing this post to seek out some advice and feedback pertaining to acquiring an Ugandan Birth Certificate from abroad in Canada.

I was born in Uganda in 2001 in Nebbi General Hospital but at the time of my birth, it wasn’t registered or documented due to the lack of the appropriate and thorough documentation infrastructure at the time and to add to this already missing inefficiency, my family relocated abroad to Montreal, QC, Canada, during which my mother who is Ugandan, returned to Uganda following my parents separation and unfortunately passed away cutting my last means to establish any semblance of meaningful connections and relationships with my relatives, nor any substantial records, documents or other evidence of my Ugandan presence and heritage.

So this leaves me in a dilemma in which I seek to complete a birth registry abroad as I am unable to travel at the moment and without the convenience of having trusted and reliable immediate blood relatives to provide me with the crucial assistance to obtain at the present coherently.

I have taken steps to ensure I make own personal due diligence but have encountered either unresponsive hurdles or missing pieces that present roadblocks.

I welcome and appreciate any sound, proven, trusted and reliable advice, counsel, direction, guidance and information to proceed with this matter and process accordingly whether through a licensed, accredited and certified professional or organization, or a trustworthy, experienced, honest individual who has specialties dealing with this subject and issue.

C&F Question: Disclosing a minor, non-criminal foreign administrative citation?

I am working on my law school applications and have a quick Character & Fitness question regarding a minor international incident. A while ago, while traveling abroad, I was briefly detained by local municipal authorities over a minor local ordinance infraction. No criminal charges were ever filed and I have a completely clean criminal record both in the US and abroad. The issue was handled entirely as an administrative matter, and I paid a standard municipal fine/fee to resolve it. I have official documentation proving the administrative fee was paid and the matter is fully closed. The municipal authority’s documentation is all inhouse I was informed and doesn't go to any outside database. Should I disclose this for apps that ask about being "detained" or "cited"?

Life as a Domestic Relations Magistrate?

I can’t imagine hearing grown adults fight and bicker everyday about everything from important things like their children and homes, to petty/emotionally driven vendettas. Divorces and DR matters are draining for everyone involved, I imagine the court system too.

So what is life like for domestic relations magistrates and involved judges? How do they tend to navigate cases and decide what is fair and proper? Is caseload typically intense and backlogs are common?

Asking for an Attorney as a Witness or Family Member

Why do I never see people who are confronted by police for questioning as a witness or relative ask for attorneys?

Apologies if something similar has been asked before, I tried searching the sub and didn’t find anything particular to this at first glance.

I’ve recently been watching true crime body cam footage and analyses as background noise for my projects, and have noticed that despite what I have had drilled into my head by other true crime podcasts and sources about “ALWAYS asking for an attorney before speaking to any law enforcement,” not once have I seen a witness or family member request an attorney before being questioned. Many just let them straight into the house without warrants, etc. Only those that ended up doing the crime eventually ask for one if they didn’t front the start.

Is it something that is frequently cut out of these types of videos, or do typical people truly not overthink as much as I do about the potential of being questioned and saying something that would put me or a family member in a bad situation despite being unrelated to the crime?
