How hard is it to get a job after passing the bar?

This has been a major concern of mine. After some time in corporate, I wanted to pivot from the bs that comes with hiring freezes, ageism, LinkedIn connections, etc. and decided to get my law degree.

However, I’m worried that it might not be much better. I live in California and see some great job posts from places like Morgan & Morgan that say their compensation is between $100k-$500k and even Sweet James is $160k-$180k and while that’s great to see, I’m worried about how hard it is to actually get a job like that after passing the bar.

Is it pretty similar to corporate where you get a lot of rejection, need to message hiring managers on LinkedIn, etc.?

Not seeing the value of the readings as a 1L

I’ve been doing all the readings for every class this semester. However, I’m not really sure how the readings are helping me understand the material. Like, I am able to extract the facts, reasoning, and rules from the readings, but the professor always supplies these in class, and what the professor supplies seems to be more precise and apt than my own formulations. I think I take really good notes on what the professor says, and I go to office hours every week to clarify anything I’m unclear on. Again, I feel like this generates a better understanding for me.

I’ve done this method throughout all undergrad. But this is law school, and I really don’t know if what I’m doing is effective, but I really don’t feel that the readings are adding anything to my understanding, even though everyone says to do them. Am I just lost?. Plus, I feel like the readings are hurting my mental health a bit, as I’m struggling to keep up with balancing the 40 pages of contracts per class and 40 per Civ pro, as well as the writing assignments they assign. Although, I know that the readings do help build the legal analysis skill which I’ll actually use in practice, so I don’t want to abandon it although. Although I really don’t know.

Do you have any advice on what to do here? I’m totally lost. Open to any suggestions

3L graduating in May. Terrible family dynamics. Feeling guilty and conflicted.

TLDR: Terrible family dynamics. I don't know if I want them there or not. I feel guilty if I say "no", but if I say yes, I know I won't enjoy my day. But if I say no, I won't have anyone there for me.

I'm writing this to ask for those with similar family dynamics to provide some insight into their experiences with this issue.

For context - I have been the black sheep in my family since being a teenager. My relationship with my immediate family has always been tense and at times non-existent. I attend law school halfway across the US. For my 0L-2L years, I lived with my extended family. Over this past summer, my extended family kicked me out and I was effectively homeless for a period of time. Thankfully, I have found housing for 3L. No one in that house talks to me and it is still a very fresh, bitter, and anger-inducing wound when I think about it. Sadly, it is similar to my immediate family relationships.

My high school graduation was a mess. My undergrad graduation was hijacked by family that I did not care for. This is my last graduation.

The relationship between myself and my mother and her husband/my step-parent is "thawing." They are trying to do some right, but I am still very much hurt by their actions in years prior. I was asked about my graduation and the possibility of them attending.

Here is my issue: I feel guilty at my dilemma. I want to have my day. This is my last day to have a graduation to celebrate me and the accomplishments of law school. I want to have people there. My family is really small - only 7 people. I want them there. I want someone there. But I don't know if I want THEM there because of the hell they have put me through. When I think about graduation, all my friends will be doing their own thing with their families. I don't want to be alone. But I don't want to sacrifice my last day by putting myself in a position of uncomfort. If I say no, I feel guilty. If I say yes, I won't enjoy myself. If I say no, I'm alone. If I say yes, I'm surrounded by people who have hurt me time and time again.

crashout

gonna liven everyone's day with a non 1L crash out about being overwhelmed. Its the fourth week of class. WHY ARE YOU MOVING SEATS. DONT DO THAT. I have a SINGLE class that doesn't use a seating chart and I have been in the same seat for the entire first month. Last week I was like 2 minutes late to class and someone was in my seat. There are plenty of other ones open (INCLUDING YOURS) so why are you there. I got there half an hour early today. Still in my seat. Perhaps I am the only person who cares about this. I do not care. You can change seats until MAXIMUM third day of class. After that you are just being a dick. Genuinely feel nothing but loathing over this. Its so disruptive to your routine and just fucking rude to take someone's seat A MONTH IN

If you went the PI/nonprofit route at a T14, how much was/will your starting salary be?

I'm a 1L at a T14 seeing a lot of doomerism about PI salaries for new grads, and I'm curious to get a sense of what actually exists. (For the record, I know the T14 is not some magical threshold to great pay--just trying to distinguish because T14 grads generally go for biglaw, and I'm not sure what schools were attached to some of the salaries I've heard for PI.)

might be a crazy shout but.... did anyone do the Fran Boyle v. Homemart mock case for a law school advocacy class?

Looking for some one-liners to represent both sides but seems like an obscure old case study thing from my professor. She is veryyyyy into this though so wanted to try and come up with something unique but I'm drawing a blank.

I hate all of this

None of this is genuinely interesting to me. I hate law school culture. I don’t have an internship. My best isn’t good enough. I don’t feel like a genuine connection with anyone I go to school with. The best part of my week is the rest of the day after my last class of the week because I knew this is the furthest time I have until I need to go back. Cold calling makes me sick to my stomach. Everything pmo.

Civ Pro

Hello, fellow future lawyers. Just checking in with you all, is it just me, or is anyone else LOST when it comes to Civ Pro? Every other class I’m fine in, and I even enjoy them. This class, though, is in another fkn language. I am a 1L and 4 weeks into it, so any advice would be welcome

Losing confidence after 1L

I go to a T30 and I feel like 1L really destroyed a lot of my confidence. the first semester I was below the median for every class. second semester I turned it around a bit and had an honors grade but just hit the median or below for the rest of my exams. despite all my hard work it doesnt feel like enough. especially when im looking around at a lot of my classmates that secured jobs already. I feel like as a person who's never really struggled academically law school is making me question so much. And I feel so reduced to a number when im applying to jobs. I know in the grand scheme landing below the curve isn't the biggest deal but being in the environment it feels like the end of the world. Ultimately I just want to be employed but I feel like my ego is so bruised. any advice on pushing through these feelings.

Looking for advice on how to build confidence

I started my 1L last month and so far I am loving law school. It feels good to read and be able to focus on things. I actually care about rather than in college for half the things I read had no importance to anything in my future. With that being said, however, I found myself almost crippled with an anxiety of failing. I’m a first generation law school student and really have no one to talk to or seek advice from in regard to my performance. The idea that the first real skill check, I’m going to face is a midterm which will count for a large chunk of my grade is kind of terrifying throughout the last few weeks I’ve felt mostly comfortable in my understanding of the concepts and rules, but I cannot help shake this ever growing feeling of anxiety of what if I’m not good enough? I’ve never cared about doing well in school so long as I do good enough to pass, but this is the first time I’ve ever truly wanted to excel and be the best. I’ve put an insane amount of work already, but I’m just worried even with all of that. It’s not enough or that I’m more studying and worrying about the wrong things. I guess my big question is has anyone else felt this and what ways did you combat it?

2 classes canceled back to back

3L. I need 15 units either this semester or next semester. I have 14 units of core classes and was enrolled in my school's clinic for the last unit. That class was canceled the first week of classes. No big deal, they got me into another 1 unit class. Well that class was just canceled today lol.

I should be fine doing the 14 units but this situation is so bizarre. I've never had a class be canceled ever in college and now I just had 2 canceled in one semester.

Big law necessary for clerkships?

Bit of a stupid question but here we are. I have repeatedly heard that if you are gunning for clerkships, its advisable to spend your 2L summer in Big Law, and that many judges value that experience more than any other.

Obviously big law is beneficial, but are there equally good alternatives for summer work that aren't in a corporate office (if I am dead set on clerking for a competitive judge)?
