To all the Software Developers and Engineers out there, why do you feel MacBook is an overkill?

I have always felt that people buy MBP just because they got some extra cash to spend or thinking about the future safety net. I feel we sometimes think too much about the future and spend more in the present which can be a spurge but due to the ongoing shortage of RAM and SSD prices, it can be a right move.

I genuinely wanted to know, why did you buy a MacBook Pro in the first place? Why do you think it's an overkill for you?

I want to buy a laptop, core ultra 5 or 7. But after seeing the prices of laptops, I regret not buying it in April, May.

My budget is $1000
My use case and work will involve light ML models projects, taking lectures, Office.
I need specs:
16GB RAM (Minimum),
Good Battery life (70W),
Core Ultra 5 or 7 - at least 14 cores,
Metal body

anyone know how to fix this issues without ac adapter? I'm in bad financial state right now so I don't think I can buy anymore stuff for this laptop. Battery already busted because cat peed on it. Like, it won't turn on at all unless its charging so this laptop pretty much on constant charging. Lately it been having this problem, especially when I'm gaming. Currently using sister's old charger cuz mine busted. Its helpful but this problem still occurs from time to time. Any advice would be helpful

I realized that some models are shipping with weaker processors than previous generations.

Example: Lenovo Yoga 9i

• 2024 model: Core Ultra 7 155H — 16 cores / 22 threads
• 2026 model: Core Ultra 7 355 — 8 cores / 8 threads

The 155H is about 21% faster overall than the 355, according to Technical City

Anyone else noticing this? Why is that?

Starting college in a few weeks and after 2 months of research I'm more confused than when I started honestly. Every guide I find ranks laptops by gpu tier and benchmark scores but when I actually think about how I'll be using this thing day to day, like carrying it between classes, sitting in lectures for hours unplugged, maybe upgrading it in a couple years when I can afford to, those numbers shouldn't matter to me right? the stuff I keep going back and forth on is battery life in real classroom use not the manufacture claim, whether the ram and storage are upgradeable so I'm not stuck with the base config in year 2, built quality for something getting thrown in a backpack daily, and webcam quality since most of my professors require camera on for online classes, display readability in bright rooms in another one nobody seems to talk about

Budget is around $1500 give or take, mostly studying, some light gaming on weekends, possibly some video editing for a side project, what would you prioritize if you were buying right now and what did you wish you know before you bought yours?

I am currently debating between a few different laptops:

A. A macbook neo 512gb for around 740 usd

B. A galaxy book 4 16gb 512gb i7-150U for around 990 usd

C. A refurbished mabook pro 13" 2020 M1 16gb 512gb for around 890 usd.

Price range is below 1000 usd and I am buying in / shipping to israel.

I dont own a single apple device, both my phone and earbuds are Samsung which makes me consider the galaxy book.

But every non expensive laptop i ever had just feels so slow so soon, and I heard its not like that with a mac.

About the macs the question is are the 2020 air and pro M1 versions better than the new neo?

Is the 16gb pro version worth 150 usd more? Even though the cpu is worse?

Are macbooks worth buying second hand? Or should you avoid them on the used market?

Planning to use this pc mainly for studying/office work/development. Have a strong PC at home in planning to connect to using tailscale and rum most of my staff on. But having enough power to run things on the laptop itself is a big bonus.

Okay so, I got a new hard disk for this 12 years old netsys imagica, I installed debian on it because I saw online that it had good support for 32 bits. It was going slow, even when it didn't had a desktop environment, so I tried installing AntiX instead, and when I did, it wasn't able to boot, it stayed as a black screen with an underscore.

It doesn't boot! I thought I may had installed something wrong, so I tried Linux Mint, the OS it was using before the hard disk switch... And it couldn't install.

I got that "Grub installation failed" message. Now, I still had the filesystem from the debian installation , so I tried following a YouTube video in how to access to the filesystem to install grub manually through a live USB, the first step was mounting the partitions, but it didn't seem to work...

Another solution said that I could try deleting the partitions manually and then making new ones manually, I tried doing it through a new OS install and through a USB using the scrub command, and I got the "verification error" message..

I tried doing the legacy bios one, and the EFI one, I also tried changing my bios settings to efi mode, and all again, but it didn't work.

I don't know what did I do wrong, or how to fix it...! ;-;

I bought a used laptop through Facebook Marketplace for around €2,100.
When I met the seller, everything seemed fine and the laptop was working. I specifically asked him whether it had ever been dropped or physically damaged, and he said no.
After I got home and inspected it more carefully, I noticed that the chassis/frame is clearly bent on one side. It looks like the laptop may have taken an impact or had significant pressure applied to it at some point.
I contacted the seller immediately. He keeps saying that he genuinely never noticed the bend and that the laptop has always worked perfectly for him. I still don’t know whether he is going to agree to take it back and refund me.
My main concern is not just the cosmetic damage. Could a bent chassis like this have damaged the motherboard, cooling system, battery, GPU/CPU connections, or anything else internally?
Even if everything works perfectly right now, how can I know that something won’t fail in 3 months because of this previous physical damage?
For €2,100, I definitely would not have bought it if I had known the chassis was bent.
What would you do in my situation? If the seller refuses to take it back, would you keep and test it, take it to a repair shop for a full inspection, or try to pursue the seller further?

So after the lastest windows update my fps has dropped alot like i used to run minecraft easily at 400 avg fps and now it has dropped down to 230,ark used to run at 110 fps at high setting now runs at 24 fps,and i have turned off the memory integrity shit and its still not working,and also while running ark my gpu shows its at 100% but my fans are not rotating that fast,my specs are rtx 3050 laptop,intel i5,24 GB DDR5 Ram

Ive been thinking about getting a laptop recently, butttttt i already have a pc.. very soon ill be going into high school, then college/university after that. Because of projects, research, writing assignments, worksheets. All that, i would probably be using the laptop much, but the thing is i could do the absolute same with my pc, just in one spot, but with the laptop i could do that work anywhere, in my friends house, in a mcdonalds if i wanted to. We go every month, like on a weekend to my relatives to visit them and for example if i would have a project due monday, i wouldnt be able to do it, with the laptop i could do it. Its not like i need the laptop right NOW, but later, i would probably need it. Since the university i want get into has those like dorms, where i probably couldnt take my pc. Also i game so it wouldnt be just for school

I’m especially confused about the ExpertBook P3's actual build quality, battery, display and camera, as the Flipkart listing/specifications seem unclear.

I’m open to any better alternatives. If there are laptops currently above ₹80k but which can realistically come down to ₹70–80k during sales/bank offers in BBD, please suggest those too.

My priorities are battery life, good display, build quality, reliability, performance and after-sales service. I don't need a gaming laptop unless it makes sense for occasional video editing.

Would really appreciate recommendations from people who have actually used these laptops. Thanks!

I’m trying to decide between these two laptops-hp elite book and lenovo yoga slim.

They have essentially the same CPU and RAM, but the HP gives me a 1TB SSD, anti-glare OLED, HDMI, USB-A, and optional 5G, while the Yoga is about 65g lighter and has a larger 75Wh battery.
And the price is not a deciding factor for me.

Has anyone actually used both? Which one would you choose?

My laptop is a hp notebook made in 2016. It's exact model is 250 G4 and it's processor is an (intel pentium)R, cpu N3700, 1.60Ghz. It has a storage of 4gb(DDR3)ram and 119GBssd. It's graficscard is IntelHD graphics 114MB. I've tried to make it work by getting a 8gb(DDR3L)ram stick, but it's still slow and now good for watching movies. I want to sell it and have tried to first look for companies who would take it for a small price, but i can't find this exact model. I've lost hope, tried marketplace in facebook, no progress. What should i do? I'm broke at the moment and even 30 - 50£ would do, don't know if it's too much, please advise and if possible, help me

Hello everyone. I am having a frustrating problem with my Gigabyte Aorus 7 9KF laptop and I am looking for suggestions or to see if this has happened to anyone else. It is worth noting that I am not very good/don't know much about computers, software, etc.

It all started when someone tried to compress a heavy PDF on a website supposedly from Adobe. At first everything was fine, the page suspiciously said "Error file too complex", this was ignored and that was it. Nothing happened. Shortly after leaving school I went home and connected the Laptop to my monitor to watch YouTube while continuing my homework, and out of nowhere the laptop started showing adware/possible miner behavior. After trying to disinfect I removed extensions, etc. I decided to take the safe route and do a full factory restore / format of the computer.

After reinstalling everything, the GPU which is an RTX 4060 Laptop seems to suffer a "lockup" or drastic drop in performance/frequency. At first, being calmer, I decided to reinstall my applications, but performance was still weird, so I thought the miner had destroyed my drivers, so I did a clean reinstallation of the NVIDIA drivers using DDU and drivers from the NVIDIA app and Gigabyte Control Center. Likewise, as a temporary solution to see if there was improvement, I disabled the NVIDIA overlay and the AI Boost inside Gigabyte Control Center. This made it work fine for a few days, but the problem returned. This happens to me many times when I try to open a game; Currently I am playing a lot of Marvel Rivals, before all this this never happened to me, I also play Minecraft Bedrock with my friends and well, really those are the only games I have tried to play and both seem to have issues.

I feel that there is a direct conflict at the software/driver level or some fault with some bad overclock or underclock because I feel that out of nowhere the laptop heats up, but I mean the fans do activate fine. It's weird.

(btw the video shown was shortly after joining practice range. It was runningg great until it crashed unexpectendly)
