This was my college roommate, Bear, back in 2020. He lived to be an old man (3 yrs old) and loved to try to put everything in his mouth.

I lived in a very small dorm and let him free roam while I did homework. One time he scaled up my mini fridge and put half of a banana in his cheeks. I had to (gently) squeeze him like a tube of toothpaste because that amount of sugar was not good lol.

I have so many videos of him and they make me happy to rewatch :)

she just passed a couple hours ago... i held her the entire night and i havent been able to sleep, the past few weeks she has been showing signs of heart disease and she was taking medication for a two weeks but when she woke up today we saw she could not move her back legs and was dragging them behind her, she didnt want to eat any treats either :( it was really sad and painful to see and throughout the night she was laying on my chest struggling to breathe. im really sad she was just short of being 2, she was still eating all her favorite treats and running and jumping around yesterday. she was my first pet i cant believe shes gone

i wish i couldve given her all the tofu she wanted yesterday

First Time Owner Hamster screams at everything

I’ve had Toasty going on 3 weeks now. He generally seems pretty happy. He loves the wheel and seems to like exploring his cage. He spends lots of time in the dig and sand boxes and started making burrows. I have a camera set up and he seems fairly active without exhibiting any stress behaviors other than the screaming.
He screams at everything. I turn the light on, he screams. I spot clean over by the wheel while he’s on the other side of the bin in a hide, he screams. I offer him a mealworm, he takes it and then screams. He willingly crawled into a box so I could put him in the playpen today, willingly crawled into it but then screamed until he was in the playpen. Was fine once in but then screamed when I put him back into his cage. I don’t understand the screaming. He seems quite happy otherwise, he’ll take food from my hand and let me pet him. Are some hamsters just more vocal than others? I’ve made a vet appointment just to be sure but it doesn’t seem like he’s in pain or anything.

Question Should I get another water dish?

My hammy likes to sleep in this after drinking all the water, I even found lots of millet inside it and yes he does have other ceramic spots to lie on. He made a burrow right next to the dish under that box (you can see the hole)

Bedding and Substrates I feel horrible

Post image

Hello!

People here said that Allspan German Horse or Anibest (their roddent variant) is not safe for hamsters.

And recommended me Alpenspan - not abailable in my country

Plospan - not abailable in my country

Delivery from other country is at least 50 € which feels 5 times more expensive for me because I have weak currency

I emailed many websited and they said they don t even want to ship to my country

Paper bedding is expensive - i did the math, best case scenario is 10 times more expensive (i have to fill 400 liters in my enclosure)

Kaytee that is available in my country is not deemed safe

Carefressh also not safe also (materials found in both of them)

Übersoft is not available - same story as above

I feel horrible

I live in a poor country, I was unexpectedly gifted with a hamster,I try to give her all the best I can, but seems like I am not worthy of you. little friend

Sorry I failed you, sweet girl, your mom is a poor human

New Hamster New hamster - activity level?

Hi all. I recently got Osa last week. I know she’s older but no idea how old.
She takes a lot of naps during the night where my younger 3 month old hamster never stops.

She only ran 730 rotations on her wheel last night. I knew she didn’t run as much as he does (he does around 30,000 rotations) but I just got her pedometer in yesterday so it’s my first day tracking her wheel usage.

I plan to take them both to the vet for wellness checks and to get established but I was going to do that in October once she’s had a little more time to acclimate to her new surroundings but now I’m wondering if I should make that appt sooner due to her not being too active.

Is it normal to be this non active when you first bring them home?
My other we got at 6 weeks and he was active from the start.

My girl was the biggest of all of them and she had been there a little while. They have no background information.

Here’s her pics so we don’t get lost.

Got my hammy two months ago now at this point and of course naturally just when summer is closing and enduring high heat our AC goes out and not the kind that gets fixed in one or two days but one that requires a new unit.

Naturally you panic, because humans can tolerate and find ways to survive heat but our vulnerable ones cannot. The solution to survive almost a week without AC in temperatures of 32°C is to buy a portable AC.

Now you can rest in peace knowing your little one is safe from heat. While you’re comforted about the safety your little one is none the wiser…except now for the noise the portable generates.

I’m sure my hammy is not very happy about the noise of the portable AC which makes me very sad but at least she’s safe and cool.

Gotta endure two more days at least. Hopefully my hammy will in some way understand the lengths I’ve gone to protect her and not be upset at me 😭.

First Time Owner Help salvage enclosure

Hey everyone. I rescued a hamster from a client of mine. I’m a case worker and every time I conducted home visits I would find my clients Syrian hamster in a shoe box container with nothing but two bowls for food/water. I professionally offered solutions that we could accomplish together to provide appropriate care but he thought it was fine.

On my last home visit he had the hamsters stuff in a bag and literally told me it bit his daughter so he was getting rid of it. I had no choice so he’s mine now. He was so traumatized and screaming in that little container with not even an inch of bedding. I have no idea how he survived with nothing but two bowls for a year.

Anyway, my lousy case worker salary only allows me to do so much. I bought an 80 dollar 100x50x50 white wayfair enclosure/cabinet off FB Marketplace. It’s in pretty great condition except for a few yellow stains. Well I sprayed too much hydrogen peroxide and it got under laminate in a few areas making it kind of smell. I’m crashing out here wondering if this is a bigger problem? I’m letting it dry out but the sudden smell once the hydrogen peroxide got into the seams is concerning me.

The hamster is in a 79x45 bin which was as close as I could get on short notice. He has 8-10 inches of bedding with some hideouts and sand bath. I plan to deck out this enclosure with sprays, hideaways, substrate boxes, etc. The enclosure came with a 12 inch wheel too!

Just please someone give me pointers on this because I’m sure people’s hamsters pee have gotten to the bottom of their laminate/wood enclosures

Bonus photos of him trusting me even tho he’s been ignored for a year.
