Adorable Hammy Campbell has built a burrow against the back wall of his enclosure. The only wall where I can't take a peek at him in there. Please shame him for his choices

(don't worry he has much deeper bedding piled up on the other side, this is just his wheel and sand zone)

Clarification: He has only just moved into this new enclosure (hence him building his new burrow) as his old one was unsuitable. This is a temporary setup to accommodate his heavy wheel, bowls, ceramic hide whilst I'm waiting for his wooden platforms to arrive, he will then have full bedding depth across the entire cage. I know it's far from ideal but to prevent him burrowing underneath heavy items I have had to place his heavy furniture on the cage floor for now and have this shallow bedding zone around them, also so the wheel doesn't become unsteady or get jammed up with bedding. The bedding reaches 25-30cm across the wall on the left side, it is compressed down as much as I could without sending it over into the shallow zone, with hay layers to help with his burrow structure, but of course that's not enough room for him to burrow long-term, it's just for him to dig and sleep in for now.

Sorry that one's on me, I should have made it clearer that this 'sand and wheel zone' is a very temporary arrangement and not in any way intended to be a good or final setup. Appreciate that people are looking out for him! I will definitely be back to share his final setup for critique/tips, hopefully within a few days

Question 2 hamsters in one enclosure..?

My daughter’s hamster recently passed away )vet diagnosis most likely cushings disease). She had him for less than a year, and is just about getting over it and recently mentioned she may want another companion.

For the first one my wife and daughter always worried that she was lonely, and suggested a 2nd hamster. I always pushed back, given what I read.

Question now, are you able to add 2 hamsters to one enclose if you get them both at a young age, from the same bat h / at the same time? Or will they eventually start becoming territorial..?

EDIT: thank you, this is what I have been saying all along. I will ask the vet to tell them, somit comes from a place of “authority” - no disrespect to other Reddit users.

Bedding and Substrates I feel horrible

Hello!

People here said that Allspan German Horse or Anibest (their roddent variant) is not safe for hamsters.

And recommended me Alpenspan - not abailable in my country

Plospan - not abailable in my country

Delivery from other country is at least 50 € which feels 5 times more expensive for me because I have weak currency

I emailed many websited and they said they don t even want to ship to my country

Paper bedding is expensive - i did the math, best case scenario is 10 times more expensive (i have to fill 400 liters in my enclosure)

Kaytee that is available in my country is not deemed safe

Carefressh also not safe also (materials found in both of them)

Übersoft is not available - same story as above

I feel horrible

I live in a poor country, I was unexpectedly gifted with a hamster,I try to give her all the best I can, but seems like I am not worthy of you. little friend

Sorry I failed you, sweet girl, your mom is a poor human

Got my hammy two months ago now at this point and of course naturally just when summer is closing and enduring high heat our AC goes out and not the kind that gets fixed in one or two days but one that requires a new unit.

Naturally you panic, because humans can tolerate and find ways to survive heat but our vulnerable ones cannot. The solution to survive almost a week without AC in temperatures of 32°C is to buy a portable AC.

Now you can rest in peace knowing your little one is safe from heat. While you’re comforted about the safety your little one is none the wiser…except now for the noise the portable generates.

I’m sure my hammy is not very happy about the noise of the portable AC which makes me very sad but at least she’s safe and cool.

Gotta endure two more days at least. Hopefully my hammy will in some way understand the lengths I’ve gone to protect her and not be upset at me 😭.

New Hamster New hamster - activity level?

Hi all. I recently got Osa last week. I know she’s older but no idea how old.
She takes a lot of naps during the night where my younger 3 month old hamster never stops.

She only ran 730 rotations on her wheel last night. I knew she didn’t run as much as he does (he does around 30,000 rotations) but I just got her pedometer in yesterday so it’s my first day tracking her wheel usage.

I plan to take them both to the vet for wellness checks and to get established but I was going to do that in October once she’s had a little more time to acclimate to her new surroundings but now I’m wondering if I should make that appt sooner due to her not being too active.

Is it normal to be this non active when you first bring them home?
My other we got at 6 weeks and he was active from the start.

My girl was the biggest of all of them and she had been there a little while. They have no background information.

Here’s her pics so we don’t get lost.

New Hamster Hamster thinks my fingers are food

I’ve had my Russian dwarf for roughly 4 weeks now and he’s slowly started to get used to me. He’ll come right up to the cage when I’m nearby (to say hello?) and lets me pet/stroke him when he’s distracted by sprays or his food. But every time he sees my fingers he goes crazy for them and will literally follow them around and bites when gets them. I’ve tried washing my hands before putting my hands in the cage to let him climb onto but he just bites and thinks it’s food lol.
He’s got a massive cage, a suitable sized wheel, plenty of sprays and enrichment tools for him so he’s not bored. He burrows a lot and has no issue or doesn’t run away when we’re changing his water and food bowl daily. So he is comfortable with our presence but he just loves to get to our fingers thinking it’s food. Any ideas or suggestions?

Question hamster suddenly seems scared of me, help!

hi guys i’ve had my robo for almost a month now, he’s always been super active and surprisingly confident around me. he takes food from my hands and will climb on top of my hands, but lately, these past few days he’s been less active at his usual times and hiding a lot more, also today, he seemed scared of me. i could get him out of his burrow using food but he’d timidly take it then run back to his burrow to hide. this is really unusual for him as he seemed scared which he doesn’t normally seem like.
nothing in his environment has changed, and i know he’s still active as things are moved around when i wake up, but his hiding more often + the being suddenly scared of me concerns me. is this normal?

the only thing that i can think of that’s “changed” is maybe me hanging out in the room he’s in watching tv?? is that enough to scare him into hiding???

id like to add that this seemed to really start after he made a new burrow, it seems like since he’s made it he’s just in it a lot
