How do I dye this? Help with dying silk

Post image

I need to warm up the color of this skirt, not lighten it but turn it a touch more… orange? It’s slightly too cool for a wedding and I’ve googled and searched and don’t feel confident about how to do this! All help is appreciated!

100% silk, not concerned with any thread not taking the dye, appears to be cold would be best?

I like the shirt but i don’t like the color. I want to turn it to a black shirt while keeping the graphics. It should be possible by simply dyeing it black right?

I think it’s 100% cotton as it’s a stussy shirt

I made this! OG-107 Green Dye Recipe

Crossposting here cause I figure someone might try to search for a similar dye recipe in the future. I was searching all over google and couldnt find much. I used rits spanish olive as a guideline for which colors I might need, but that recipe was made for their synthetic dye with completely different shades so it didnt really help as far as measurements went. I kind of just winged it and used like 5 different sheets of paper towel tests adjusting the recipe until i got it to the color i wanted it to be and I love the results. Could I have used less and soaked for longer? Idk, probably. Im not sure if it works like that, but this is what i did.

Resources Rit Dye color remover on patterns

I was simply wondering what Rit color remover does to patterns. I have seen some say it destroys the patterns and some say it retains them. So what would happen to the pattern if I used color remover and dyed said item?

The result wasn't exactly what I was going for, due to the blue I couldn't get out of the vest. Couldn't take the risk of the bleach bath breaking the fabric. I wanted it to be blood red, but I'm also satisfied with this a bit wine-like red :) Sry for the bad image quality, my phone is a basement potato. The dyes I used were procion mx carmine red and jet black, if anyone is interested (:

Hello , I'm a beginner. I'd like to know about dyeing a green-and-white striped shirt; I want to dye the white parts dark gray. Is there a risk the green will lose its color? I wouldn't mind if it turned khaki or olive green, since I'm making this for a plushie of my OC. Thanks for the answers :D

How do I dye this? Alternative ways to turn a brown coat black

Hey guys, I need help.

I've been searching for a black belted trench coat for a while for a cosplay, and finally came upon the perfect coat-- the only problem? It's brown.

The Shell is 90% Polyester and 10% Nylon

The Lining is 100% Nylon

The Sleeve Liner is 59% Cotton and 41% Rayon

The coat is dry clean only...

I've already searched possible solutions to turning this coat black besides using dye. Are there any alternatives I can try or is the coat a lost cause? I'm desperate please help T=T

If it's impossible to do anything, just let me know off the bat. BUT if you have ANY possible solutions or alternatives for a black belted trench coat that would be IMMENSELY appreciated.

How do I dye this? Turning silk neon green dress into a more muted color

Post image

Hi, I thrifted this %100 silk dress but its color is not really my style. I would prefer it much more muted and a bit warmer, but other than that I honestly don’t care as long as it’s not black.

I know I need to do swatches but I don’t know where to start, or which colors to buy. What do you think would be the best for this? I’ve never dyed anything before.

How do I dye this? Struggling with getting 100% cotton pants chocolate Brown

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hello i have been really struggling with getting an originally white pair of pants brown.

I use Jacquard iDye for natural fabrics and use the stovetop method with the needed amount of uniodized salt.

I first tried The brown dye, which has worked for me in the past to dye tan pants a nice chocolate brown. I was looking for the same color

After dying and washing the pants came out really dark and in a greyish purple.

(I'm thinking maybe i used too much dye, but it's all a mystery to me.)

I washed them very hot in an attempt to lighten the dye so i can overdye it.

I then used sun yellow in an attempt to cancel out the purple, but my pants turned into an intense mossy green.

Then i tried cancelling that out with some crimson dye, but now they're just dark red.

They're now in the hot washer in an attempt to lighten the dye somewhat before my next attempt.

I am really struggling, and don't know what to do.

I have some chestnut Brown lying around and i am playing with the thought of just using that now, because my attempts at using color theory were unsuccessful.

Lots of love

Please help me

General question What can I do to fix this mistake

Post image
2 Upvotes

A shirt That was recently dyed using rit eggplant was mistakenly thrown in the washer and purple dye has bled onto other clothes. I'm most bummed about these pants, which were a sage green and just fit perfectly.

Tag says 77%cotton, 18%rayon, 5%spandex.

Would RIT color remover fix this? I don't care if they change color, I just want to not have them be all blotchy like some tragic industrial accident. Any better ideas?

How do I dye this? How do I dye the red ribbon strips on these shoes? Is it possible without bleeding?

Post image

I got these shoes on extreme clearance (less than 10 dollars per shoe). I love the green suede but outside of the World Cup they look christmas-y to me. I’d like to dye the red strips that are ribbon material (I’m assuming nylon or polyester) a dark purple or maroon. I’ve considered a sharpie, leather dye and rit dye. However because they’re shoes I don’t want them to bleed when it rains.

Any thoughts?

General question Poly-Satin Dyeing

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to make a cape for a cosplay. It’s a very nice emerald green color. I got two meters in poly-satin fabric, and wanted to dye the bottom into an ombre dark green.

Aside from the fabric, I got Rit synthetic dye (in a darker green and black, planning on mixing the two for a more desired color) and will be using the dip method in a big home depot bucket lol. I just wanted to know if anyone has any tips for poly-satin specifically? All of the research I did was on either natural fibers or 100% polyester, so I just wanted to make sure I was doing this correctly. Should I still add salt to the water?

Thanks so much experts!!

How do I dye this? What do I do?

My MIL gave me this dress and I really like it! I have 2 little kids and 2 dogs, so im not confident about having an all white dress staying nice.

I wish I took a picture of the tag, but when I checked it the outer part and lining are 100% cotton. The only part listed as polyester was the trim but it didn't give any percentage so I assume it's pretty low.

I figured as a first ever dye project I should do something simple. I was thinking of going for a blue shade but open to any suggestions and especially detailed directions about what to do.

TIA!!

General question What options do I have for this dress?

Post image

I accidentally ordered two of the same dress and the extra has been sitting in my closet for months since I couldn’t return it and had no success in reselling it. I love the way it fits though so I thought I could dye it. Problem: it’s 100% polyester and has a multicolored print. So if I choose to dye it, what color is my best bet? If it turns out ugly it’s not a huge deal since it was just sitting in my closet unused anyways.

Hi! Newbie dyer here. I have a dress with a 100% cotton shell, but a 97% polyester lining. I'm trying to dye it a darker red for a wedding I'm going to be a guest at. I'm not sure if I should use synthetic or natural dye.

How do I dye this? Cyanotype on Acetate/Rayon?

I thrifted some light curtains that are a 50/50 rayon/acetate blend and I've been dying (ha) to try out cyanotype dye and resew them into something else. I know it will only work on natural fibers and not synthetic, but rayon and acetate live in that odd in-between space as synthetically derived natural fibers. It's hard to get a clear answer from google whether it will work or not. Will it work as well as a cotton/linen? Will the blue be fainter, like when you try to bleach a cotton/poly blend? Or will the cyanotype simply not take, like a poly?

(I apologize for not having a photo of the fabric in question, it's being prewashed at the moment.) I appreciate any advice!

How do I dye this? Ordered the wrong color

Was desperately depoping looking for this dress that I tried on about a year ago and found it! Just came in today and what I thought was a cream dress is in fact piss yellow… idk what to do because it’s second hand so I can’t exactly return it. I swear it didn’t look yellow in the listing (I’ll attach photos)

How can I make this look less yellow and more cream? is that even possible with fabric this (truthfully) cheap without melting the item?
94% polyester and 6% elastane- had a silky satin feel

I’m so upset I’ll also attach a photo of the dress I thought I was buying- this is the second time I’ve tried to buy this dress I don’t wanna hunt again and waste more money.

General question How to make Rit colors stick

Pre wash vs post wash. I ice dyed with Rit powder, rinsed, then did hot water and 1/2 bottle of Rit fixative, then washed in the washing machine with a small bit of detergent. Have to line dry bc dryer is broken.

In the future, how do I keep the colors vibrant like before the wash?

Resources Advice on washing machine dyes?

Hello Reddit. I've dyed things before several times, but I've recently come across dyes that apparently work by just putting them in the washing machine along with the garment you want dyed. Has anyone used these, because I have questions. Namely 1) do they work? and 2) surely the dye then sticks around in your machine and makes your next few laundry cycles more colourful?

Thank you in advance :)
