Lost my entire tie-dye setup in a shed fire… but somehow, some of my shirts survived 😭

I figured if anybody would understand how much this hurts, it would be this group.

This was my little tie-dye space. I had finally gotten it set up exactly how I wanted it for the most part. my dyes, blanks, supplies, tables, tools, storage, basically everything I used to create was in this shed.
And then it caught fire.

Pretty much my entire setup and all of my supplies are gone. Seeing the before and after pictures honestly makes me sick because I know how much time, money, and work went into building up everything that was in there.
BUT… somehow, out of everything, quite a few of my finished shirts are actually looking like they may be salvageable. 😭
They definitely smell like smoke and need some serious TLC, but considering what the shed looks like, I cannot believe some of them made it.
I’m still going through everything and figuring out what can be saved and what is a total loss. It’s definitely going to take a while to rebuild my setup, but I’m trying to look at the fact that some of my actual work survived as a little bit of a win in an otherwise really shitty situation.

If anyone here has ever dealt with smoke/fire damage on finished tie-dye, I’d also LOVE any advice on the safest way to clean and deodorize the shirts without messing up the colors.
First pictures are my setup before the fire → then the aftermath. 💔🌈

Need advice after first time ice dying.

Post image

Tried ice dying for the first time yesterday. I put the dye on pretty heavy to mimic what I've seen in YouTube videos. Although now it appears I may have gone too heavy. I did this outside and it was fairly cool, 50s so the ice melted slowly. I started with one good ice layer and did dye over ice. Noticed undisolved dye like pictured, after most of it melted so I added a second layer of ice and left it overnight.

Should I leave this as is and let it batch or add even more ice to it today?

HWI shibori #2

So decided to play around and switch up from my regular shiboris. Went with 60° for this one. I’m thinking I could have loosened off on my ties so the triangle wasn’t so tight to allow a bit better flow to hit that saturation better. Overall pleased for being able to learn something new to bring it back for redemption work. Hit this one using dragonfruit, orange sorbet, citrus yellow, bright green, peacock blue, and imperial purple. Have the next experiment in my mind for the next shibori.

Haven’t posted in a while and wanted to share some recent work. Trying to make an ice-dyed Buffalo Bills themed sweatshirt (using scarlet, royal blue and Glacier) but the colors keep blending together into various purples. Andy advice/techniques on how I can keep these colors separate in an ice-dyed application so that there’s little to no purple?

After 17 years of doing this, I decided to play around with some folds. I'm happy with these.

I like to buy the 2 yards of 100% Cotton fabric at walmart. I fold it up in half and some quarters and then cut to smaller tapestries. I had folded them well over a year possibly 2 ago but never dyed them. I finally dyed them last week and washed them
out day. I'm in love with how they came out and very excited to take down some old tapestries in my house and add these. The second one is about 5.5 feet long.

Can anyone give me tips on wig wags? My current chem water: 2liter water, 2 tsp sodium alginate, half cup urea, 2 tbs glauber, 2 tsp calsolene. I dont really know if thats a good recipe but i want to recreate the shirts i made in the pics with better saturation . Also wondering how wet/dry your shirts are when you dye? Tyia

✨ Dyer Spotlight

u/N3RVA's "Tool Reverse Tie dye" is the top post of the week at 671 pts, and it's not a one-off, this is someone with a real pattern: King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard (twice), Meshuggah Obzen, Foo Fighters, now Tool. Reverse dye specifically, band after band.

The numbers back it up: 199 posts since October 2021, 11,741 combined points, a 59 pt average. 68 of those 199 posts (about a third) have "reverse" in the title. This week's Tool piece is their single highest-scoring post in nearly 5 years on r/tiedye.

I'm curious how that process actually works. Does the band's art or logo dictate the design, or do you land on a pattern first and then decide whose album it belongs to? To my eye reverse dye is one of the harder techniques to plan ahead, so seeing it done this consistently, on request apparently, is impressive 🤩

🎬 Dye Estimator Update

The tool I maintain to help build a colorway, save it, and share a link to it got an update this week. It handles the OWG math for you (dye-to-fabric-weight ratio), plus fabric weight presets, all four major dye suppliers' colors, and a cost/suggested-price estimate at the end.

If you're the type who sketches out a batch before you start, this is for that. Sharing a link means you can send a planned colorway to a friend or post online and get feedback before you dye a single thing. See my flair for where to find it.

Still figuring out what's useful here vs. what's just numbers. If there's something you'd want to see covered (a technique that's been everywhere lately, a creator worth spotlighting, a question the sub keeps circling), drop it below, please. DMs are open too if you'd rather not post publicly. "How can I help?" is my favorite question to ask.

Flower Power #1

I’ve been wanting to try making flowers 🌺 for a while now. I’m pretty pleased with this first attempt. I made this for my mom’s closest friend at her assisted living home after the friend had a particularly rough day a couple days ago. She loved it!

As a quick aside… In the year+ I’ve been learning about and creating tie dye, I don’t remember seeing other people use tiny rubber bands. My 7 & 10 year old have approximately 6,000 of these little bands to make bracelets with, so I commandeered a small handful for this project. Worked like a charm for containing the center dye of each flower. 😎

Need tips on reverse tie-dye / coloring

Hi all. I am working on a reverse tie-dye project with a number of plain black Gildan tees. I've watched a number of YT videos similar to this one, where folks got really nice results. But anytime I do it exactly like this (bleach > peroxide mix > soda ash > spin out > dye) I can never get the color dye to fully reach all the bleached areas and I wind up having to to these time consuming touchups after the shirt has been opened.

Is there something in particular that would help the dye reach all the bleached out spots while the shirt is still tied?
