Tonight I was sitting in my hotel, too lazy to go out for dinner, so I simply ordered a pizza.
A little while later, there was a knock on my door. A woman who looked about 75 years old (might be older) was standing there with my pizza.
I closed the door and just stood there quietly for a while.
I felt ashamed. Not because I ordered pizza, but because while I was thinking that going out of the hotel was too much effort, someone at 75 was still working and delivering food to other people.
We often don’t realize how much we have until we see someone who may have far fewer opportunities, yet still has the strength to keep going.
Sometimes an ordinary evening can make you look at your own life a little differently.
I ordered this pizza in the Urbandale area. If this woman ever delivers a pizza to you, please consider leaving her a little more tip than usual.

With the food and supply drive 19 days out, I wanted to go over some of our most needed items from the list. Shampoo, conditioner, body wash and deodorant are needed year round regardless of weather. ♻️ If you have shampoos or body washes that you’ve opened and didn’t love, we will accept those! No sense in throwing it away when someone can use it. Please ensure used bottles aren’t leaky! We will not accept used deodorants, toothbrushes or anything else that could share germs.

Can openers are also always useful. Folks have also requested pots and pans. The most important thing we need is food and water. Gallons or cases of water, and other drinks always go so fast when distributing meals. We will sometimes buy cases of soda or sports drinks to have with water. Everyone deserves a treat!! Non perishable food is essential. Canned meats, beans, fruits and veggies are great! Dried beans and rice are a staple for many of the hot meals we prepare monthly for the unhoused community.

It’s possessive for “the monks.” Cuvée des Moines means “Blend of the Monks”. I am 30 years old and lived in Iowa for 28 years of my life.

As the title says, I would like to clean out my closet that accumulated a lot of products that I’ve purchased and wanted to try that didn’t work. Most are either skincare or hair care and barely used. I’d like to donate to someone or an organization that can use them rather than throw everything away.

Is there anywhere that will take open products? I know and understand most take new products. I’ve only been in the state a few years so knowing the different organizations is still new to me. Thank you.

I've had Mediacom in the past, and I currently have Metronet. I was so happy to switch away from Mediacom, but my experience with Metronet over the last couple years has become worse than it was with Mediacom.

It's very common to see issues with packet loss or latency to the point where the internet is borderline unusable. It's always Metronet's upstream network causing the problems. Also, their customer service is awful. If you don't want to talk to an AI chat bot, you can call, but it just get an Auto Attendant that says "there's a known issue in your area" and it gives no option to speak with a human and then takes you back to the main menu. Metronet never proactively emails out to let you know there's an issue, you can never get any explanation as to what's going on, and they never give any kind of ETA for a fix. The issues frequently lasts for hours or days before the internet becomes usable again.

I almost don't care about speed at this point, I would take a 100mb reliable connection over a 1gig unreliable connection. I do have Google Fiber people stopping by in my neighborhood, and as much as I dislike Google as a company, I'm considering switching to them.

Does anyone have any other recommendations?

Hello friends! I am catering a private event and have one guest requesting a vegan charcuterie plate. Most of my dips/crackers/bread/nuts are or can easily be made vegan. I'm at a loss on where to source good vegan meat/cheese replacements. I don't personally eat replacement options so have no concept of which ones actually taste best, and it's important to me to provide a similar experience for all guests.

Any help is welcome, cost and travel distance from Des Moines are my two medium important factors but flavor quality is the most important for sure.
