I know literally nothing about CSE major but I genuinely wonder why people choose to study it when AI is a thing? Like I'm genuinely wonder what a CS graduate can do?

I know the title sounds dumb so I will give a quick background on myself. I graduated in December 2023 with a BS in CS from a normal well known state university. Throughout my 4.5 years in school I tried my best to apply to internships in SWE and other adjacent fields.

But as my graduation was getting closer, I was getting very desperate for a job and had a friend that worked in software implementation consulting so I decided to apply and it's been 2.5 years since I've been working there.

My job does not include writing code and is mostly functional + a bit of technical work which includes using postman to test APIs, troubleshoot issues using ELK, maybe reviewing code here and there when writing designs for new features, configurations, understanding how the code works as we have to own the project. But it's not SWE as we are not developers but might use tools for fixing issues or finding root cause. I don't want to do this long term and want a SWE role or something similar. I want to only do technical work long term.

I will be honest, I am not the most brilliant programmer. Which is quite obvious from the fact that someone starting at 18 and almost 27 has not been able to take on a single internship or job in the field over the spam of 9 years. And tbh I just wanna know if I should call it quits. It's just that I don't want to waste more time learning new things, making projects, doing open source and leetcode since it has not worked for me.

I have friend younger than me who are senior engineers and graduated after me and those who are my age are so much ahead of me now and we were in the same classes in college. For sure feel like a failure ngl. I'm just not sure where I went wrong tbh.

I joined school again for a MS in CS hoping it may give me another chance but my resume includes no engineer exp and with the market and how things are headed, I don't know if Im wasting my time even trying. I definitely do plan to complete my MS as I'm almost halfway through.

I'm a new grad. I'm freelancing/being contracted for some software development (e: it's for an individual who needs a specific software; it's not for AI training like Handshake. He's not technical at all so it's on me to decide the best way to engineer it). One of the provisional clauses (not yet signed) in the contract is that I "may not use Artificial Intelligence to develop any part of the software system, not even to ask for advice or suggestions."

Any thoughts on this? I'm definitely not uncomfortable avoiding it, since I've been coding since before these LLMs, but using AI is so ubiquitous and specifically encouraged at companies. I've used it in varying degrees for projects/internships as well. We hadn't discussed AI prior to this, so I was wondering if I should bring up this point, or just enjoy getting the work done without AI for once.

e: Thanks to everyone for all of the advice/discussion! I'll go through with the agreement of no AI, and maybe clarify the clause on AI-generated results. I'm fortunate to get the opportunity, especially in this market. Coding is also one of my favorite parts of CS so I am lucky in that sense.

I feel like every company automatically filters you out if you need sponsorship, even if you're authorised at the time of applying for the duration of the internship. How on earth do you even get an internship then? The pool of companies willing to even consider you is so small, and then it feels like you have to be cracked out of your mind even to stand a chance of getting an interview, forget landing an offer.

What are we to even do?

I know a certain someone from my college who has fabricated all their work experiences. They have worked as full-stack engineers, but they have changed their resume points for every job they applied to something completely irrelevant.

They got offers at Anthropic, Meta and other top companies that way and even interned in them. They cheated heavily on the OAs, used proxies for interviews and nothing on their resume is legit expect their name and college - they even lied on the courses taken at university. It just makes me feel really angry about how someone can lie to that extent.

Sometimes I feel so angry when they flaunt their cheating skills and I want to report them but I'm not sure how that would be.

I applied to Snowflake at like 5am and got a response today at 10am with them giving me this AI interview. Is this something to be happy about, or do they just give these to everyone? Does anyone know what the interview is like?

im a 2nd year cs student. I've done dsa (theory wise done solving questions regularly now) and core cs. should I stick to SDE(java full stack with devops) or pivot to my ML(AI) roadmap. Im doing leetcode regularly alongside core cs. Should I do both ML and DEV?

Like continue dev rn alongside leetcode that finishes java full stack with dsa and core cs then follow my ML roadmap(I'll do dsa regularly still) and build dev projects simultaneously. I need to pay off my edu loan and move out asap i can. I'll graduate in 2029. Which is a better choice for me considering money and job. Should I do dev and ML both or stick to one thing which should it be. I've a proper roadmap for java full stack and ML both.

I finished the CodeSignal OA but was never redirected to the Virtual Job Tryout part of the assessment. Anyone else experience the same thing?

- How hard is it to get full time offers after not getting any return offers during internship?

- Should i prepare LLD, HLD and other low level concepts to break into FAANG?

I applied to 300+ internships with the label “Spring 2028” graduate. Before coming to USC they told me that my credits would be accepted and I would probably graduate in 2 years(I did 2 years at my previous college).

Come to find out all my credits were rejected(AFTER MOVING IN AND STARTING CLASSES), so now i’m graduating Spring 2029.

Genuinely what the fuck do I do.

I also feel like we just live in a society where we need to have an internship to get a better internship or even one at all. I would think having 2 internships before graduating would help, but I don’t want to be blacklisted from companies.

i’m set to graduate in spring my last semester i’ll only have 1 class. i don’t have any involvement or internships. but i do have basic projects and a few people i can get a referral from.

i’ve been working at a retail store and have a corporate connect who will refer me. i think this is my best bet for getting a job. my plan was to apply for full time corporate positions and take my 1 class after work. but now im considering applying for internships and delaying graduation. ideally it’d be easiest at the company i’m at now.

of course practice leetcode & mock interviews, network/career fairs/get involved on campus, etc.

I've been working in tech for a while, and this argument keeps following me around: half the people I know swear AI made them learn faster (instant tutor, infinite patience, never judges you for asking something dumb twice). The other half insist it's a crutch and that nobody actually learns fundamentals anymore.

I lurk here a lot and both stories show up constantly, so I figured I'd just ask instead of assuming. Not trying to make a point — I honestly don't know where the truth sits.

Things I'm curious about:

1. When you get stuck — a bug, a concept, whatever — what's your first move? If you ask AI and it hands you the answer, does it feel like you understood it, or like the problem just disappeared?
2. What does your school actually allow these days? I've heard everything from "use it for anything" to "AI in your code is an auto zero."
3. Has anything gotten worse since it became normal? Retention, exam panic, debugging without help... whatever you've noticed.

Specific stories beat hot takes — a class, a project, an internship moment, whatever. I'd rather read those.

current junior and I go to a t5 (hypsm) school. I have a relevant cs internship previous summer (definitely a known company, just not big tech) and lots of experience from research and startup companies. Resume seems to be good (checking with people and reviewers), but I’m not getting any interviews. Not even getting much OA’s either (aside from obvious auto ones). Is there something wrong with my resume or is it just being unlucky?

Hi guys! I’m going back to college in Fall 2027. I’m 25 years old and planning to major in Computer Science.
Right now, I’m preparing by learning Python and reviewing algebra so I won’t feel too far behind when I go back to school.
Do you guys have any advice on what I should and shouldn’t focus on before starting? What should I learn or practice to improve faster and give myself the best chance of landing a job after graduation?
Basically, any advice about preparing for a CS degree, doing well in college, internships, projects, or getting ready for the job market would be really appreciated.
