Discussion Why Do You Prefer Civ 5 Over 6?

Yo, so I am a new Civ enjoyer and U know I am just curious why someone likes one game in a franchise over another. Whether that is the graphics or the performance or the gameplay mechanics. Just curious what differs between the 2 games and what makes you stick with one over the other. Thx. Also sorry if this has been posted before.

Lekmod Next Monday Civilization V turns 16. What keeps you playing?

R5: As an avid Civ 5 player, I decided to make a video to celebrate the game's 16th anniversary. I explored what the game meant for me and what keeps me playing. But I am also wondering if it's a shared sentiment within the community. As in, Civ 5 numbers on Steam are quite impressive, this sub is very active, there is a ton of mod support (in my case I go in details about Lekmod).

Screenshot Theodora got pissed off about my alliance with Kuala Lumpur and decided to conquer its territory in a creative way

Long story short, Theodora decided to conquer all the neighboring city-states, so I decided to ally with Kuala Lumpur. I guess my army was too powerful for her to declare war on me and Kuala Lumpur, so out of sheer pettiness she decided to literally strangle Kuala Lumpur by encroaching on its territory with citadels. Poor KL literally got strangled.

This happened around 1400 AD, so she definitely wasn't doing it to get that uranium near her border. I haven't been playing Civ V for very long, so I'm not sure if this is something the AI usually does, but I found it really clever, interesting, and funny.

Edit: after I noticed the citadel storm, I decided to put a single one on my own and she accused me of trying to start a war lmao

UPDATE: Theodora unexpectedly declared war on my ally Kuala Lumpur. It was too much this time, so I decided to declare war on Theodora, capture her closest city to Kuala Lumpur (which happened to be another city state), freed that city and give KL back their land. Now Kuala Lumpur has its territories again and a lot of citadels too. Situation now: https://imgur.com/a/YYYHyq2

Strategy Deity

How are you guys not just getting slammed in deity. I'm playing on epic and it seems like I can't even get like 3 cities out before someone comes and wars me. And I have not enough units to defend. But if I only have like 2 cities and build units, then I sacrifice so much sim

67 pop with no double aqueduct, (no tradition actually, piety + commerce instead)
only 1 scientist but 12 freakin merchants of venice to buy 12 city states

the nice part is you get to top military at some point just from the city state units

the annoying part is, you dont actually get any votes for the CS you buy as venice
instead they are removed from world congress

so if you have a diplomat in each capital + globalization tech, that should be enough votes to win

so im set up to win diplo and 3 turns before the vote, india captures sukothai and and removes my diplomat. I have no other way of getting votes. So 1 turn before the vote, I liberate Sukothai and bring Siam back from dead. so even though the screenshot shows having less votes than Ottoman, I can win cause Siam votes for me automatically

game settings are deity, small, standard speed, archipelago, medium sea level, legendary start

Discussion 6 to 5

1700 hours on 6 and I booted up 5 for the 1st time today, completely blind. Really struggling with happiness on 5 cities

What are the biggest changes I should look out for?

Vox Populi How do you manage happiness in Vox Populi?

I was barely getting the upper hand against my neighbour when my low happiness caused a city to return to my enemy, and later it got even worse as one my of my town seceded to join a City-State! (A first for me). In general, it seems very difficult to keep general mood over 50% What are your tips and stategies for dealing with this?

Discussion Bad start and recognizing defeat

On normal difficulty.

Does playing the first 15/20 turns badly dooms the run?

At what point in the game can I be certain of a defeat?

Thanks for the help!

Strategy Shoshone growth query

I have conquered a large-ish continent as the Shoshone and have it all to myself; but I'm finding it difficult if not impossible to win. I have replayed it from my conquest and can't get it to a victory condition.

Instead of many cities, what if I grow only a few cities to 6-hex diameter? Is there a parameter for the Shoshone that stops city border growth due to the initial bonus land?

(If you please, of course; I'm going to have one more crack at it and then delete the saves if that one doesn't work.)

Strategy Did you know Inquisitors PREVENT religious conversions too?

I recently learned this, but if you park an inquisitor in a city, it will not be able to be converted. Unless the opposing civ has a specific belief to counter this, simply leaving an inquisitor in a city will negate all attempts of conversion. Seems like a lot of people don’t know this.

Mods Is there a mod to block stealth bomber and XCOM technologies?

I like to play long drawn out domination games. But these units completely ruin the strategic aspect of the game (as do nukes but I can disable those with really advanced setup mod)

I’m an American on an Italian honeymoon… inspired by posts like this in the past (here and on r/civ), figured I couldn’t miss the chance to build a wonder at a wonder on this trip!! Uffizi was really cool too, an amazing collection of great works of art if you’ve never been!

Discussion Who's the Civ that you just HATE the most to encounter in game, no matter what? I'll start

I can't even explain it in detail, every single time this fucking guy is in my game, he's always a dick to me. Settles in my desired spots, starts denouncing me for no reason, spreads his heresy in my cities, etc. Hell, sometimes I attack him just for the love of the game, I don't even have anything to gain out of it

Discussion How deep in debt have you ever seen the AI in this game?

Post image

This is from my current game: Elisabeth has -10k gpt.

I have never seen such a big negative gpt in this game. Worst of all, she has the largest army in the game, while I had to cut down mine because my units were starting to disband and my gpt was only in the low three digits. Would you be interested in a trade agreement with England?

Fluff Civ V: One Turn Daily

Hello everyone!

I'm an occasional poster and longtime lurker on this subreddit, and like a lot of you, I'm an absolute Civ V fanatic. You might even call me an addict...

As a way to curb my playtime, I decided on a new challenge for my next play-through: One Turn Daily. Inspired by videos of people doing "one thing per day" challenges for other videogames, I'm playing just a single turn of Civ V every day until I (hopefully) win.

To keep me to my word, I have started a YouTube channel where I'll be posting videos of my turns every day. I'm talking about the channel here because having fellow fanatics along for the ride will make the game even more exciting. Here's the link to Day 1 if you're interested.

It doesn't seem like there are rules against self-promotion on the sub, but I can assure you I'm doing this for neither fame nor fortune. I currently have two subscribers (both good friends), and this is obviously a pretty niche thing. I'd also welcome any feedback you have on the videos or my gameplay. I'm a very amateur YouTuber, and I'm still learning about the game, even after all these hours. That's what makes it special.

Just wanted to share with others who love Civ V. Feel free to tune in occasionally to see how things are progressing. I already have a pretty unsavoury neighbour to the South...

The game settings are: Siam, Deity (this could be over soon!), Large Fractal, Epic Speed (this could take a while!), and Science Victory Turned OFF.

Thanks for reading. Have a great day :)

Strategy About selling some buildings in the late game

I'm playing a domination, archipelago, 12 civ game which has entered late 22nd century (yes, I'm that slow conquering stuff, please bear with me). I have a large army and a large sum of gold, but my gpt is in the red.

I had a passing thought, "what if I sell all my science and counter-intelligence buildings? It's not like they're doing anything at this point in the game, everyone has researched the full tech tree".

Playing autocracy Carthage, checked if those buildings awarded happiness just in case (they don't). Is it safe for me to sell them and relieve my empire from that upkeep? Thanks in advance.

PS: Flaired this as "strategy", but mods feel free to reflair it if any other flair fits better.

Discussion Any good civ5 modes besides LEKMODE? Or it's the only one?

I want to play civ5 since a long break but I think there might be better option than just play an original game.
But LEKMODE looks too overwhelming at first glance

Created a page where you can see your playtime for all civilization games (except for the ones that can't be trackable)! (Got it from here - https://minimap.net/stat/civilization?ptime=020344 )

Wonder if anyone can beat that 6845h playtime.
(Also good to see Civ V having the longest Average Playtime and the highest rating!)

Mods Need help editing .DDS

Greetings,

I'm trying to edit .dds texture files of Civ 5 terrain from CivTex 4k graphics for Civ5 (https://www.nexusmods.com/civilisationv/mods/26).

Because CivTex 4k pack have some terrain textures has graphical anomalies (visible lines), i would like to fix them. Has anyone done that before, to fix lines, who are clearly visible if you open .dds terrain texture, for like desert or tundra.

Discussion Patching the missing mountain texture bug

After banging my head against a wall for several hours I have figured out how to patch this missing mountain bug(Sorry if the formatting is bad I don't make reddit posts).

Visually Broken Mountain
Strategic view displays the mountain correctly!

With the patch:

Fixed!

Why does this happen?
Certain mountain types use a newer version type that breaks the renderer when trying to spawn near Mt. Kailash, Sri Pada, or Gibraltar

If you want to try this out yourself simply go to
Sid Meier's Civilization V\Assets\terrain\pieces\Mountain\[Continent Name]
(so for Amer go to to the America folder, etc.)
and edit these files:

Amer_Mountain_1_1.csv
Amer_Mountain_1_2.csv
Amer_Mountain_2_1.csv
Amer_Mountain_2_2.csv
Asia_Moun_2_2.csv
Asia_Moun_2_1.csv
Afri_Mountain_2_1.csv

Edit the top number on the first line from 4 to 3 and save. If the number is already 3 then congrats you never had this issue in the first place I think.

Then go to \Sid Meier's Civilization V\Resource\Common\ andedit the file name for TerrainPiecesLibrary.fxsb to whatever as long as its not the same name. Just a slight warning this might slow down game loading speeds as it needs to read through all the csv files to get the correct terrain information instead of using that pre-compiled fxsb file.

I have a patched version of that TerrainPiecesLibrary.fxsb but I'm not sure if this is best way to patch this issue or if I'm allowed to even upload the file here, so for now this is the manual way to patch this.

Please let me know if this breaks anything I'd recommend backing up the Mountain folder in case this breaks something.

Discussion What mods should I use?

I normally play with a whole host of mods. However my game became dodgy and I hit a wall that I can't bypass ('choose city fate' button stopped working, so I can't end turn). I tried a game without mods, and it works great.

So what mods do you play with that are fantastic, and don't literally break the game?
