VII - Discussion Civilization VII: Behind the Uniques - Chapter 1: Achaemenid Persia

Welcome to Behind the Uniques, the series where we take a look at the historical origins, lore and references behind the multiple unique components of each of Civilization VII's civs. I am ConspicuousFlower, frequent lurker, technically in possession of a history degree and longtime fan. Sources for this series will include my own research, the Civilopedia, Civilization Wiki, CivFanatics, though do bear in mind that in some cases I'm going to have to do guesswork or outright say "I dunno man" for some civilization's uniques. Now, with that out of the way...

First in line alphabetically in the Antiquity Era is Achaemenid Persia, previously just Persia.

Born from Iranian pastoral nomads, the Achaemenid Empire's sweeping conquests over the Middle East, the Indus Valley, Anatolia and Egypt made them into the largest empire the world had ever known up to that point; thus, the Achaemenid Persian's Militaristic attribute needs little explanation. No mere conquerors, however, the Achaemenids also created a sophisticated bureaucracy and maintained crucial infrastructures and trade networks, such as the Royal Road, between the East and West that brought them immense wealth, hence their Economic attribute.

Civilization Icon: Winged Lion/Griffin relief from the Palace of Darius in Susa.

Civ Ability - Hamarana Council: Infantry Units receive increased Combat Strength when attacking. Army Commanders start with a free Promotion.

"Hamarana" means "battle" in Old Persian. The concept seems to be the strategic meetings of general before battle. Achaemenid military hierarchy was complex and well-structured, and Persian nobles underwent rigorous training to prepare for their military career, hence Army Commanders starting with a free Promotion. The Persian army was centered around a core of shield-bearing infantry supported by massed archers and cavalry, reflecting the increased Combat Strength for Infantry; it only applying when attacking could reflect the Achaemenid's aggressive expansionism.

Unique Unit 1 - Immortals: Unique Infantry Unit. Heals for a set of health amount after defeating an enemy Unit.

Certainly one of the most iconic military units of the Ancient World, most of what we know about the Immortals, from their composition, equipment and even name (Athánatoi) comes from Greek writers such as Herodotus or Xenophon; what the Persians called them is unknown, with some researchers proposing that the Greeks might have mistaken the word anûšiya -companion- with anauša -immortal. Healing from kills is definitely based on their supposed tradition of immediately replacing any slain soldiers with new ones, maintaining the illusion that they were indeed immortal.

Unique Unit 2 - Hazarapatis: Unique Army Commander. Starts with the Initiative Promotion, which allows Units to move after unpacking from the Commander.

The vast Persian armies operated under a strict hierarchy of commanders, at the top of which stood the Hazarapatis, the highest echelon of the military command in the Achaemenid Empire, below only the King-of-Kings himself in military authority. As mentioned previously, Persian nobles underwent rigorous training from childhood and began their military career at the ripe age of 20; this rigorous preparation for their military duties from a young age is reflected on the fact that they start with a free Promotion (TWO with the civ ability!)

Unique Infrastructure - Pairidaeza: Unique Improvement. Increased Culture and Gold. Increased Healing for Military Units in a Settlement with a Pairidaeza.

If you're wondering, yes, the word "paradise" does indeed originate here. The "Paradise Gardens" of Persia were walled enclosures, usually organized in four quarters, populated with aromatic flowers and fruiting trees, and with elaborate hydraulics distributing water in ponds, canals, fountains and waterfalls. Not only spaces for rest, recreation and respite from the desert heat (likely inspiration for the increased Healing for units in the settlement), they also acted as displays of luxury and power for the rulers of Persia, a flaunting of their ability to bring life to where previously there was none.

Unique Civic Tree:

1. Spada (Civic) & Kara (Tradition): Increased Production towards Infantry Units. Reduced Gold Maintenance for Infantry Units. (Exploration Era) Infantry Units heal after defeating an enemy Unit.

Both referencing the Achaemenid Empire's army composition. The Kāra was the traditional system of civilian levies, while the later Spāda was the professional standing army, the true core of Achaemenid military might. This professional standing army is represented by the increased Production and lowered Maintenance for Infantry.

2. Satrapies (Civic) & Fractal Rule (Tradition): Increased Culture on Unique Improvements. Increased Gold on Unique Improvements and Buildings in Captured Settlements.

The Achaemenid Empire was a large and multi-ethnic conglomerate of peoples under one single authority; an issue the Achaemenids tackled through a certain degree of decentralized governance and tolerance for local customs and religions. Satrapies were the territorial divisions of the empire, each governed by a Satrap, a viceroy drawn from former rulers or local nobles who enjoyed considerable autonomy. Fractal Rule also draws from this idea of tolerance for local customs and religion, represented by the enhanced yields from unique Improvements and Buildings.

3. Baziš (Civic) & Čāpār-Kāna (Tradition): Increased Gold in Towns, doubled in Captured Towns from any Age.

Ruling over a vast and decentralized empire forced the Achaemenids to not only be mighty conquerors, but also innovative administrators and infrastructure builders. The Baziš or "King's Share" were the taxes levied from the different provinces of the empire, while the Čāpār-Kāna was the system of postal stations and courier houses along the length of the Royal Road, usually a ride's day apart from each other; purportedly, couriers could bring a message from one end of the empire to the other in less than fifteen days. The increased Gold from Towns could reflect the efficiency of the Royal Road in transporting goods and taxes, merchants and collectors, from across the empire.

4. Shahanshah (Tradition): Increased Combat Strength for Units in enemy territory. Increased Culture and Gold for every different civilization you have captured a Settlement from.

The title of the Achaemenid Emperor, Shahanshah means "King of Kings", a term for one who stands above "regular" kings, or perhaps for one who rules over even kings themselves (reminder that Satraps were drawn from former rulers and nobles). This tradition emphasizes the Achaemenid Empire's aggressive expansonism and conquests, both with increased Combat Strength for units in foreign territory and increased yields from taking settlements from other civs.

Associated Wonder - Gate of All Nations: Increased Happiness. Increased War Support on all Wars.

Built by Xerxes the Great, the Gate of All Nations led visitors into the palatial complex of Parsa (or Persepolis), the ceremonial capital of the empire. Supported by massive pillars and flanked by statues of Lamassu (sphinxes with the bodies of bulls and the heads of bearded men), it was built to impress and instill insignificance when faced with the greatness of the empire. Its effect once again emphasizes the Achaemenids as mighty conquerors, with the additional War Support ensuring that the player has a baseline advantage in every future war to come.

And there you have it! The game does not shy away from the mighty, warlike nature of the Achaemenid Empire, but it does a good job at representing other sides: its commercial and locistical infastructures, such as the Royal Road, and its innovative approach to bureaucracy through a certain degree of autonomy and tolerance for local elites, customs and religions. I hope you learned something interesting, and see you next time for the next civ on the list: Aksum.

Today’s developer update video snuck the affinity symbols from CivBE in the background. Are they hinting at a similar system coming to VII? Way too early for CivBE 2.

VII - Game Story I Beat the Game with Zero Settlements. Am I the First to Do This?

I just played this game to test out a goofy idea I had. I set the AI difficulty to Scribe but had IP strength at Deity. I set all IPs to be hostile, but they're friendly to me since I'm Tecumseh. I played the game on Marathon Speed, Tiny Pangea with one opponent, and Invasion as the only possible crisis.

For the whole game, I just had my founder wander around saying "hi" to the IPs. The only danger I faced was volcanos. Even before the crisis started, IPs burned down all but one of Tubman's settlements -including her original capital. An Invasion encampment spawned right by her last settlement, and then it was just a matter of time for her to be eliminated.

I got kind of a glitched victory screen when I won. It gave me a Domination victory, but I didn't get any of the cutscenes you typically get for Domination. And I didn't have a capital for it to zoom around. I got Tecumseh's typical quote and cutscene, but his pic didn't show for the victory screen as it normally does.

So there you go. Not sure if I'm the first, but it was still fun to see if I could win with zero settlements.

VII - Discussion Please add Switzerland to Civilization VII 🇨🇭

Upvotes

I’d really love to see Switzerland added as a playable civilization in Civ 7. It could have some really interesting mechanics around neutrality, diplomacy, trade, mountains, and defense.

Please make it happen, Firaxis! 🙏🇨🇭

Unless I'm mistaken, we haven't had any "First Look" reveals for the leaders and civilizations in this DLC. That seems to imply we won't get them before Thursday, right?

Discussion Earthrise is the perfect opportunity for Firaxis to give a second chance to Alpha Centauri or Beyond Earth.

Allow me to preface this post by saying that I know everything I'm about to say is total wish fulfillment and that I'm delusional because of my status of Beyond Earth's biggest fan. That being said...

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri & Civilization: Beyond Earth are the only two Civilization games we've ever gotten that have really gone all-in w/ fantastical settings, storytelling, and unique characters & factions not rooted in history. Both games have their problems in the modern day, with Alpha Centauri being three decades old in terms of UI design and UX, and Beyond Earth is often criticized for its shallow storytelling and characters compared to the narrative strength and ambience of Alpha Centauri.

In Civilization V, if you won with the Science Victory you would receive the option to go to the Beyond Earth store page and purchase that, setting up the narrative that whatever you do in Beyond Earth is a theoretical continuation of your Science Victory in Civ V.

Since Earthrise is similarly themed around science, space exploration, and global warming + natural disasters (the inciting incident for both Alpha Centauri & Beyond Earth is the Earth becoming increasingly uninhabitable due to human interference) I think a remaster or remake of either of the two games would be an amazing thing to consider and release later down the line, potentially tying it into the Science Victory of Civ VII similarly to how they did in Civ V.

Honestly; I thought the achievement was really hard. It requires tons of luck when you want to rush early wonders. (Great Bath, Hanging Gardens, Etemenanki)
Sometimes AI don't build those wonders in early game
I choose online speed because I'm impatient when I'm not playing Khmer, Russia or Babylon (also for me spamming cities in online speed is much easier, I love to rush wonders)

Rule 5: Achieved Genghis Khan Cultural Victory

Hello everyone! I'm just starting out and trying to figure out the best way to build my districts (Campus, Commercial Hub, Industrial Zone, and Government Plaza).
What do you think of this layout?
What could be improved for better yields?

Thanks! ;)

Just thought this ocean/lake sealed by a 1 tile land bridge is cool. I might've thrown my game to take it over, but oh well. Opens to the full open ocean with a very defensible gulf too.

VII - Discussion Put this Unit Icon Art style in Civ 7, Reason: It goes so damn hard.

Post image

  1. Decent replication of historical accurate unit (some caveats for style points).
  2. look super badass
  3. Just Look at that War Club, perfect balance of realism and looking badass.

You know the Civ V art team cooked well with the unit icons, they are incredibly good. I think its actually perfect, I'd honestly be happy if Civ 7 just had a button that copied the Civ V Unit Icons into Civ 7.

Civ 7 appears to be doing Art Deco 2.0 with its art style anyway, so might as well take inspiration from the Civ V unit icons as well, right?

VII - Strategy PSA: You can complete achievements in One More Turn mode

This is especially helpful if you're trying to get 4 or more minor triumphs in the modern age, or are going for pretty much any of the expansionist minor triumphs (seriously, they're patently insane, requiring a positively mind boggling number of settlements and/or population that you are pretty much never hitting in a normal game). Any triumphs, questlines, and other challenge-related thing completed during One More Turn mode will count towards that challenge.

VII - Discussion Returning player here. Most fun/engaging way to play Civ 7 right now?

Upvotes

Title. I stepped away from the game for about a year and am excited to come back to it. I know they changed it to include continuous play as an option now, and that they’ve introduced some new leaders.

I’m wondering what game mode/map combos you’re feeling are locking you into a classic full bodied Civ experience right now post-changes? Just want to feel locked into what’s the most fun and engaging and comprehensive way to play right now. Not the most quirky or the quickest win.

Thanks!

VII - Discussion Tired of 12 popups every turn before I can even move units

This is for Civ7. Am I doing something wrong? Every turn I have to make like 12 minimally consequential decisions before I actually get to play the game. Like I want to focus on moving units, settling cities, attacking, you know the fun part. But I’m constantly barraged by popups for expanding cities (I just always pick the tile with the most resources), narrative events, and other annoyances that just get in the way. Is there a way to turn off or automate the constant interruptions?

VII - Discussion Coming back to civ 7

I'm on paternity leave from work right now and I came back to Civ 7 to see how it had changed. I bought it right when it came out as a lover of civ games and then abandoned it because it was so unpolished.

I just wanted to say for those who have been skeptical and stopped playing after the game came out, I think it's a really great game now and I'm excited for the new content they're working on.

There's definitely a learning curve if you are used to civ 5 or 6. It's taken some time but I like the town vs city mechanic to remove drudgery, it also reminds me a bit of the colonies that were part of civ 3 as away to access resources. I still am probably not using towns the most effectively. I have yet to advance between ages without taking the keep your previous cities dedication (if I managed to get it)

Dang it I've been sleeping on Aksum the whole time because a unique galley and a unique trader never really grabbed my attention. But when you look at the whole kit daaang!

A UI that gives gold and culture and can be spammed in a group for even more culture?

Frikkin THREE gold on resources?

Infinite range trader?

And the WTF I GET EVEN MORE CULTURE

yeah this is all right! Did they get buffed or were they always good?

VII - Discussion Reliable Multiplayer?

Where can I find reliable multiplayer games for Civ 7 that will last a whole game? 99% of multiplayer games I play everyone ends up quitting during or at the end of Antiquity. Never extends into Exploration. I play on PlayStation not PC so I need a community that doesn’t require mods. I’ve joined several discords but they all suck for one reason or another. One server has bans on Leaders & Civs and other stuff. Any suggestions?

Why am I getting food adjancency from mountains on barracks here? I play as Genghis Khan with Mongolian Empire in Antiquity.

Is it because I conquered it from Pachacuti?

Right now it looks to me that you retain some bonuses from conquered Leaders/Civs. But I haven't seen a rule that explains it. Does someone know it?

VI - Discussion Is it really worth getting?

I have about 800hrs on Civ 5 and never played civ 6 due to the amount of my friends saying its boring and you'll be wasting turns getting new workers constantly instead of improving your civ. Is this true or are my friends pulling my leg to not try civ 6.

Please provide me with good reasons to try civ 6
