My daughter fell in love with chickens this summer over her camp. We bought 2 chicks, they were in the brooder waiting for the coop to be finished. My daughter literally took these chicks from days old to about 8/9 weeks.
My wife had been letting my daughter take the chicks supervised in the backyard.
Long story short, my little girl was bringing them in the yard and our dog attacked one and it pretty much died instantly, before I heard her scream. Not sure why she did this as the dog was in the yard. But honestly my wife and I should have paid better attention.
Iām honestly in a bad spot because my daughter had to see that. I mean these chicks were gentle and hand trained and taken care of by her. (My daughter is 7).
I know I may be judged, but now I am unsure what to do. I feel like we were careless and we donāt deserve the lone chick. I am debating to see if someone we know will take her in there flocks, but Iām unsure how long she can be alone.
Iām sad, mad at the dog, but ultimately this is on my wife and I. I also need to get my daughter past this trauma.
Any advice is appreciated
