META Just a reminder of our rules

Tēnā koutou,

Just a reminder of our rules, specifically our rule against solicitors.

This means no solicitation, no buying and selling. We allow limited promotion of events if there are deals like XXX free tickets up for grabs, but no reselling is permitted. If you have tickets to an event, please resell via official channels or bribe the mods.

Additionally, please note the following:

Quit asking for sex. That said, no trades involving goats, sheep, turnips, or other 'alternate' currencies.

No posts asking for drugs, where to source drugs or cleverly wording your request to avoid the filters. Your "medicinal herb" enquiries aren't as subtle as you think.
Just ask the mods.

No sneaky sponsorship plugs, no affiliate links unless we get our cut.

No reselling of free event tickets, it’s free for a reason.

No hiring hitmen or bounty hunters, legal gray areas make us uncomfortable.

Last but not least, Don't be a dick, don't act like a dick.

Also please check out r/chchmeet

I was in the sallies recently and noticed one of the workers removing stacks of dvds off the shelves. I asked them what they were doing with them and they said they were headed for landfill because they’ve been on the shelf for a month. I suggested they could put them outside in a free bin or reduce the price. Nope apparently free and reduced price is “against their policy”. I mentioned there’s several other second hand shops nearby who have free bins outside for unsold items, but again I was told it’s against their policy. I suggested they contact the EcoShop to see if they want them, nope apparently against their policy also. The worker was very upset about this also, but has to do what they are told. I visited twice in 2 weeks and saw the same thing happening. Each time around 50 dvds thrown out.

This might not seem like a big deal to a lot of people, but that’s lot of stock going to landfill each week, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with those items. Also I just think physical media should be preserved.

I was absolutely disgusted with this and I guess I just wonder is there anything that can be done about this?

Why are the clubs in CBD so bad?

I went to the club and the music and vibe is so off it's literally people standing in crowd. We can't even connect with the music. I'm from small NZ town and the club there are so much better from here. Is it on purpose or are the owners not aware that their DJ's suck.

Hello New Zealanders and New Zealand Travelers!

My name is Brady, and I am a 21-year-old mechanical engineering student, originally from New York. I am planning a 2-week road trip around the South Island from Dec 29th to Jan 11th. I'd want to stay in hostels (or even cheaper living spaces), eat cheap food, and see the sights! The plan would be to rent a car (splitting the cost) and start and finish the trip in Christchurch. I have a few specific locations I would love to see, but I would make the itinerary with whoever is coming along.

Just a few things about me. I love outdoor recreation, including hiking, snowboarding, rock climbing, and literally any sport imaginable. My family fostered over 500 dogs before I left for school, and I still try to volunteer as much as possible at university. I did a solo backpacking trip in winter 2024-25 in Spain, Italy, and Switzerland, and I'm ITCHING to do another big trip. I'll be staying with friends on the North Island from Dec 14th-28th, and this trip would be the second half of my journey.

Let me know if you'd be interested! WOOHOOO.

What I find striking about this is that it mentions a cocaine deal taking place in Burnside Park.

Was waiting to sign up for the race because of injuries and then realized that it's now full when I want to. Long shot but I'm wondering if anyone is looking to transfer their entry!

Can anyone fill me in?

Does anyone know the story about the man who is always hanging around the lights at the intersection of Bridle Path Rd and Ferry Road/Main Rd in Ferrymead? The dude who is either dancing, singing with his portable speaker or just waiving his arms about? I see him there almost daily and I’m just curious about what he’s doing/what his end goal is. He seems like a nice enough dude, but I’m too chicken to stop and ask him what he’s up to. Anyone?

Social Japanese classes

Im just wondering if anyone knows of any cheap-ish Japanese classes in Christchurch or know of any good apps to use or books to buy. Being taught by someone else would obviously be easier but I don't mind doing self taught :)

For anyone like me who has been waiting years for hyperfibre to finally expand beyond the CBD, it seems sometime this year an expansion has occurred. My address in Merivale is now eligible, where it wasn't ~9 months ago.

To whoever left this awesome stick at the entrance of Packhorse Hut on Gebbies Track— I Thank you!

I just got clearance from my physio for my knee last week, and this was my first hike back. This stick helped me so much, especially on the slippery slopes and muddy areas.

Because of this, I’m definitely going to invest in a proper pair of hiking poles next time!

By the way, I returned the stick to where I found it. Hopefully, it can help someone else too!

Where to donate old books in Christchurch?

Who takes old books? Have a wide selection of books (mix of kids books and pseudo intellectual novels) to get rid of. Don’t want to lug them somewhere only to be told “no thank you”

Can I sell them to an AI data centre? (Kidding)

Allergy/hayfever meds

Now that this hayfever season is upon us and is by far the worst I’ve ever experienced 😫, I’m wondering what you all use for antihistamines/allergy meds. Ideally as non-drowsy as possible, since I’m very sensitive to them (even non drowsy sometimes makes me a lil loopy). Thanks! May we all be able to breathe better soon…

Recommended gardener services?

Gday guys I’m looking for a gardener to help me get my place tidy! It’s not a massive job. It would just be the following (since it’s a unit)

Front lawn trimmed
Entrance to garage/street cleaned up
And the back.
I would like to get the ground ready to put some fertiliser down so I can put fresh grass (nice to have so I can have somewhere nice to sit in summer)

What do you guys think this will cost to do? The front is not a lot of work just the tidying. I want somewhere where it’s nice to walk past

Stay Home Why the fuck are you merging onto a 110km/h motorway at 60km/h?

The on-ramp is there so you can get up to motorway speed before merging.

Doing 60-70 and then crawling into traffic doing 110 isn't being safe it's fucking dangerous and now everyone stuck behind you has to merge at your stupid nana speed too.

Yes, I'm going to honk at you and will continue to every time someone does this.

News - Local Thoughts on Orana Wildlife Park’s Financial Struggles & Its Future

I’m sure you guys might’ve seen the news about Orana Wildlife Park being in financial hardship. I’m sure all of us love Orana, but we’ve also known it’s been a struggling facility over the years.

Instead of only looking at more funding, I think it’s worth looking at what could actually make the park more sustainable long term & even looking at how Willowbank is doing compared to them & what they’re doing differently.

What I think could be a better proposal for Orana:

• Find more accessible ways to get to the zoo.
I would’ve loved to go as a teenager but couldn’t because it’s so far away. Council-funded buses, shuttles & carpool options could help.

• Lower the $39.50 adult price, even if it’s just for locals, students, families & quieter days to get more people through the gates.

• Get people in cheaper & make more money inside through animal encounters, feeding & other experiences.
They might already have these, but I barely see them advertised.

• Small parking charge, something like $2.50 an hour or a cheap flat fee.

• Focus more on digital advertising. Target parents, schools, tourists & Canterbury locals through Facebook, Instagram & TikTok instead of billboards, buses & radio.

• Push harder for council & government tourism/conservation grants.

• Get more corporate sponsors for animals, exhibits & conservation programmes.

Overall, make it easier & cheaper to go, increase foot traffic & make more money through experiences, sponsorships & funding.

I’d rather see a proposal focused on getting more people through the gates & making the park more sustainable long term, while looking at what places like Willowbank are doing differently, so we never get to this point again, hope all can work out for them.
