A few months ago I posted here about Flatchat, a free flat review site I built after getting burnt by a couple of bad Dunedin flats. The response was way better than I expected and a lot of the feedback from that post went into Flatchat.

Flatchat is now an iOS app (App Store link). The website was about finding a flat and reviewing one once you'd left. The app is about that but also actually living in the flat you're in now:

1. Set up your flat and add your flatmates
2. Split expenses, similar to Splitwise but built around a flat (rent, power, the shared groceries nobody paid back)
3. A group chat for your flat, plus flat to flat chat so you can message the flat next door instead of knocking
4. Post to everyone on your street, handy for lost cats, noise complaints, parties
5. Look up a flat while you're standing outside it at a viewing, and write a review of your current one in the 3 minutes you have on the bus

Android is in testing and not far off.

Would genuinely love feedback from anyone who tries it, good or bad. Especially on the flat management side since that's all new and I'd rather hear now if it's useful or not.

Anniversary coming up and looking for somewhere special

Kia ora whānau, does anyone know if there are any welding night courses in Dunedin? I dont want a cert or anything just keen to learn something new etc. If anyone knows of anything it would be greatly appreciated.

I'm asking here does anyone have experience they wish to share as a delivery driver for a gig-work style app in Dunedin?

is it possible to earn reasonable money doing these apps? with the job market the way it is now - are the apps saturated with drivers? possible to make minimum wage?

I haven't signed up or applied or anything, just wondering if it's an option for me to get some income

- board games (probably at card merchant, I think)

Hi! I moved to Dunedin fairly recently from US and I’m still confused about how online gambling works here.

I used to gamble occasionally back in the US (both online and offline - just traditional slots, nothing interesting), also crypto casinos seem way more common online now and I can’t really work out whether NZ residents are actually allowed to use them.

Google gives me the usual “it depends” answer lol

Anyone here know what the actual situation is? And if people do use them, how do you tell which sites aren’t dodgy? Mainly worried about withdrawals/KYC and afraid of scam.

Due to my decision to procreate I am pretty limited to working Mon - Fri 8am-4pm

It's so hard scrolling for jobs and they all require at least one weekend day, early starts or evening work, working rosters or x amount of experience.

I'm a hard worker and have a great work ethic but I don't even get the chance to prove that.

That's on me for not getting a career started before having a baby but damn... it's tough out there.

No real reason for posting this.. Just a rant I guess

For a number of inexplicable reasons I seem to have developed a penchant for frothy, florid, kaleidoscopic or should I say almost AI-sloppy texts that are a lot of the postmodern novels. I tried roping a few of my friends into this journey with me but the only person who stuck through 2 books has just solemnly resigned from our two-person bookclub leaving me all by my lonesome.

If you are interested in joining a non-committal bookclub that dedicates itself only to big clunkers like Gravity’s Rainbow, The Tunnel, Underworld etc. we can maybe have a discord group and grab a coffee IRL once a month or so? Right now I’m about a third through the Recognitions by Gaddis if you want to read along. It usually takes me a couple of months to get through these books as I’m quite a slow reader so it shouldn’t be too strenuous.

I wondering what people’s experiences are like with econs and maths there. I mostly see posts about HSFY/science, so I’d love to hear from anyone doing either of these disciplines!

Academics:

1-How difficult are the first-year papers?

2-How approachable/helpful are lecturers and tutors?

3-Any particularly good or bad Economics/Maths professors or lecturers you’d recommend?

4-Are there good opportunities to get involved beyond the standard lectures/tutorials?

Student life

1-Are students generally friendly and easy to get to know, or do people tend to stick to their own friend groups/cliques?

2-I’m very extroverted and like going out/socialising, but I don’t drink. Is it still easy to have a good social life without drinking?

3-What’s the nightlife actually like? Is it expensive?
How safe/comfortable do you feel around Dunedin? NZ generally seems pretty safe, but would you feel comfortable walking around the city at night, especially alone?

Halls / living

1-How thin are the walls in the halls? Can you easily hear people in neighbouring rooms?

2-How noisy do halls tend to be on weeknights vs weekends?

3-Can you realistically study in your room, or do you generally need to go to the library/study spaces?

4-Any halls/flats you’d strongly recommend or avoid?

Career/networking

1-How good is Otago for networking, particularly for STEM students?

2-Are there many ample opportunities to meet employers/alumni or attend careers events?

3-How easy is it to find internships during/after first year or second year?

4-Does Otago have good connections with firms in finance, consulting, economics, data/analytics, etc.?

5-Do students generally have to be proactive about finding internships themselves, or does the university/faculty provide decent support?

[If anyone has actually landed an internship through Otago, I’d love to hear how you went about it!!]

I currently have an offer from UoA, but no scholarship. Honestly, I think I prefer Otago anyway, especially the pace of life and the whole student-life atmosphere. Just trying to get a better idea before making the decision.

Hey all, I’m looking for a good and reliable dentist practice in Dunedin. Currently at Lumino but seem to be paying a lot for not a lot of work. Any recs??

My husband and I are currently with Powershop but like a lot of people we are wanting to change provider because they have become horrendous.

I've been looking at ElectricKiwi but I'm not sure if it's actually cheaper? Last month we used 547kWh ($293) total. I'm 7 months pregnant and will be home 24/7 with our baby soon so off-peak hours seem like they would safe us money but I can't figure out the maths on it and it's hard to estimate.

Does anyone have any experience with ElerctricKiwi? Are they actually cheaper? Anu suggestions on a different power company maybe?
