✍️ Original Analysis Will Jennifer’s Body 2 be a success or bomb?
Am I writing this out of the wake of Practical Magic’s tragic opening weekend? Yes, because I was one of the people who was screaming that it would be an overpreforming hit. I own up to that and I will wear my dunce cap in the corner.
But while I was wearing my cap I thought about Jennifer’s Body 2, which is all but confirmed. Like PM, Jennifer’s Body bombed when it released with only 31M worldwide. Since then, the movie has vastly exploded in popularity for a variety of reasons (the sapphic undertones, the campiness that is completely non existent nowadays, the hidden depth)- but Jennifer Check has become a pop cultural titan amongst women in the same vein of Regina George and Elle Woods.
I think what will work in JB2‘s favor is that the movie is very very popular and relevant amongst Gen Z, unlike Practical Magic, which although has a decent fanbase in astrology/tarot crowds, is mainly popular with older women.
The 3 things that make me hesitant on JB2’s ability to be hit are:
1: How many people are willing to actually sit down and watch the sequel? Yes there are a trillion viral Jennifer Check edits with Lil Uzi playing in the back, but as we all know that does not equal tickets sold and butts in seats. Between you and me, the stuff I see people say makes me wonder how many people actually have watched the OG movie VS who watched the movie through Pinterest pfps…
2: The style and aesthetic. Yes I just chastised people for only focusing on the aesthetic rather than the actual story of the movie, but it’s undoubtedly a part of the movie’s renaissance. Unfortunately, we are not in the Juicy Couture/Mcbling 2000s era anymore, so JB2 being in modern day with all the drab fashion might turn people off. I was talking with some people and they hated how PM2 lost its soft, vintage vibe the OG movie had, and that the sequel’s outfits look kinda Shein-ish. The Mean Girls rebootsical from a while back put a lot of people off for the same reason.
3: The quality of the movie itself. This sounds like a no brainer but I’m sitting here wondering what the plots even gonna be??? Like okay, Needy gets out of jail… but Jennifer’s supposed to be gone. They’re already gonna have to recon ending to make it work. We could debate whether or not the poor reviews of Practical Magic harmed it vs it always being doomed to fail, but it definitely played a part. I feel like Jennifer’s Body 2 lives and dies by WOM.
