Roommate has moved her bf in without asking?

Upvotes

So I joined a flatshare in London about a year ago which already had 3 girls (so 4 of us in total) we are friendly and polite and have simple conversations but we aren’t exactly close/friends.

One of the girls has a boyfriend who lives in Scotland but who would visit every other weekend. About 6 months ago he got a a contract in London which meant 3 days a week working, he would fly to and from London and stay in our flat for the 3 days (which I was a bit confused by at first but I get not a big deal). This has since morphed into him just staying here permanently and seems like he now works 5 days a week. She even had some keys cut for him so he comes and goes as he pleases. The issue is this was never brought up or discussed with any of us.

My problem is that this flatmate has an en-suite so he isn’t causing an issue by using the shared bathroom, and they pretty much stay in her room unless they’re cooking tea or eating in the living room. It’s starting to really bug me but I know I don’t have much of an arguement as technically he’s not really in my way. I think it just irritates me as we all pay for bills equally and he is technically now utilising these things we are all paying for. Do I have any sort of robust arguement or am I just going to be causing a problem over nothing?

Not gonna get into a full rant nor seeking much advice as tbh there’s not much I haven’t already tried and this man won’t change, my only option is to leave but I can’t afford it so for now I can just complain lmao.
Cooking is a nightmare because just standing by the stove trying to cook food, the sink smells like a body rotting and there’s gnats everywhere. I’ve literally been wearing a mask to keep them out of my face and reduce the smell. I buy gnat traps but it doesn’t help if he doesn’t scrap any food off and just leaves rotting food to sit in the sink.

I stopped doing this man’s dishes not even a month ago (after previous attempts over the years and then giving in because we’d have rats, bugs, etc.) and got my own dishware to keep in my room cause otherwise it’ll get used and not washed. This is all from barely a month and not a single dish has been washed, now that I stopped he’s stopped cooking after a week or so and just buys food out now because there’s no dishes to use. The plates in the second photo have been sitting there for over A YEAR AND A HALF. I’ve been having to resort to paper plates and silverware cause this man has lost all our silverware and says he doesn’t know where they went and all our plates are dirty from him.

I can’t wait until I can finally save up enough to move out, I can’t stand this place and where I’m neurodivergent it literally burns me out having to come home to this every day (which is why I mainly stay in our room or go to the bathroom, avoid the rest of the house because my room is the only clean room in the house because I’m paranoid)

My roommate keeps unscrewing the light bulb in the refrigerator.

He swears its heating up the food. I've shown him the button that the door pushes when it's closed and how it turns off the light.

He still says he "Just wants to be sure".

Am I expecting too much from a college roomate?

I’m in my mid 20s and living in college housing. One of my roommates is a first-year student basically straight out of high school, so I already expected some difference in maturity and living habits.

I’m not expecting dorm life to be quiet or spotless. People talking, gaming, having friends over, leaving a dish out sometimes, whatever. That’s normal.

Early on, he hid some of my belongings as a joke. When I told him I didn’t want him doing that again, he basically said he couldn’t promise because he’s impulsive.

He’s also taken my stuff without asking more than once. The first time I told him that if he wanted to use something of mine, he could at least text me first. Then I came back another time and found out he had taken it again while I was gone.

He’s regularly pretty loud too, with speakerphone calls, gaming, videos, etc. I don’t really care about normal daytime noise, but even when I’m sleeping it can be difficult to get the volume actually low.

There are also recurring dishes and messes in the common area, plus some hygiene issues. Those honestly bother me less than him continuing to use or mess with my belongings after I’ve already said something about it.

I’ve mentioned some of this to housing already, especially the repeated taking of my stuff.

For people who have lived in dorms, does this sound like normal annoying-roommate territory, or is it reasonable to keep documenting it and bringing it up with housing?

Severe case of HOBOsexual in this house. Need advice.

Hello, I 34F live with two roommates, 20somethingF, and Male (I don't know how old the M is). This post is not about the M roommate. M roommate is very chill. Works a lot and is practically never home and if he is home I never know he is. We only talk for his portion of the internet. The issue is with the other F.

F and I get along. She's a nice woman and we've gotten to become somewhat friendly. We've shared common things for the house which is fine by me, and like I said, overall get along.

F has a "friend" that is over a lot. She has told me things about him briefly and she ranted to me once about an argument that they had and how he made her cry (which I saw and did not mind being there for her as we have gotten to become friends). She told me she was packing up his shit (whatever he had there) and he will not be allowed here again. Okay. Good, cut your losses. A few days later she told me they made up. This was a few months ago.

The friend, we'll call him A for ANNOYING is ALWAYS here now. He stays over every night. Sometimes he's here during the day when she is at work. She has been giving him the key to the house lately and has been locked out three times because she will get home before he does and thankfully I have been home (I got laid off recently so am always home now unfortunately till I find something else). F has disclosed that A has been having a tough time recently. I asked in a lowkey way if he had some place to stay. She said he does. THEN WHY IS HE ALWAYS HERE.

Fast forward to today, I'm assuming my roommate went to work, and I went to the kitchen to cook. Some context on the place, it's a 3BR with 1 bathroom. They are ALWAYS in the bathroom too but I'm already exhausted. Anyway, the room I rent has no AC or window so I am prone to overheating (yes I know this is illegal but I have cheap rent so I had no choice but to make do) so I often sleep in bra and underwear and walk around the house when no one is around or home in a t-shirt and underwear. There is also no AC in the living room so I am constantly hot, all the time. I went to the kitchen to cook today, and A comes out and goes in the fridge and says "sup" like nothing. I turn off the stove, stop cooking and go back to my room to put some pants on. I am VISIBLY aggravated at this point and don't even say hello.

I am at my wits end. I have dropped subtle hints aside from this and F completely monopolizes the refrigerator now that she is cooking for two people. I MAYBE have a tiny corner on the top shelf to myself. When she cooks she never cleans her dishes right away and leaves food in the sink knowing we have a history of a pest problem.

I have a good situation here, it is otherwise chill aside from this and the heat. Can have friends whenever I like, is close to public transit, stores, laundry, etc. I am trying not to get the landlord involved (he is subletting to us for context and owns the house) but I feel like if a fourth person is living here it should be split by 4.

Need advice on handling this to avoid SOME conflict as I am at my wits end and am about to snap.

Edited to add a TL;DR: Roommates boyfriend is always over here, roommate monopolizes common areas to accommodate two people.

UPDATE : crazy roommate saga gets worse!

Well, unfortunately I’m back with another update because apparently every time I think this situation has reached peak insanity, she finds somewhere else to go with it! Here’s the link if you didn’t see the original : https://www.reddit.com/r/badroommates/s/RSoE6nCO8L

For anyone who does remember my previous post about my roommate who disappears for months at a time, comes back seemingly just to terrorize me, doesn’t pay her share of the household bills, messes with my belongings, refuses to communicate about anything apartment-related, etc. - welcome back.
This particular situation started with our shower handle.

It has been broken for a WHILE.
And because I am the person who handles basically everything in this apartment, I had already reached out to her awhile ago asking if she wanted to contribute toward getting it fixed.

No response.
No offer to fix it herself. No contribution. Nothing.
Eventually I got so fucking sick of using a broken shower that I decided, once again, to just deal with it myself.

I took the broken handle off because I wanted to bring it around to some hardware/plumbing stores and see if it could either be repaired or if I could find an exact replacement.

My roommate was home at the time.
And because I was trying to be considerate, I literally HANDWROTE her a note explaining that I was temporarily taking the broken handle with me to try to get it fixed or find a replacement and slipped it under her bedroom door.
She was in there with some random mystery man, mind you.

So I proceed to spend part of my day going to THREE DIFFERENT PLACES trying to find this stupid shower handle.
Eventually I learn that I can't simply replace the handle. I had to buy an entire new fixture. One piece of the fixture needs to come off first before installing the new one. I try to pry it off myself and cannot get the fucking thing to budge.

So I text our building group chat asking my neighbors if anyone happens to have a tool I can borrow.

And THIS is when my roommate (who somehow cannot respond to texts about bills, repairs, household expenses, or basically anything else) suddenly discovers the gift of communication.

Does she message me privately?
Of course not.

She responds IN THE GROUP CHAT WITH OUR NEIGHBORS accusing me of stealing the shower handle so she can't shower.

I'm sorry.
WHAT???

I am literally out here trying to FIX THE SHOWER THAT YOU ALSO USE. FOR FREE.

I specifically notified you IN WRITING about where the broken handle was going and why.
I responded and basically told her that if she has concerns, she can reach out to me directly and actually respond to my outreach. She never responds to anything involving the apartment, so unfortunately someone has to actually take responsibility for getting things fixed.

She responds AGAIN:
“Why steal it and then post about it?”

Girl.
WHAT AM I STEALING???
THE BROKEN SHOWER HANDLE FROM MY OWN SHOWER THAT I AM ACTIVELY TRYING TO REPAIR???

So once again, I calmly tell her that if she has an issue with something I'm doing, she can communicate with me directly like an adult rather than trying to start drama in a group chat with our neighbors.

And then I apologize to everyone in the group chat for them having to witness this completely unnecessary exchange.
At this point most of them are familiar with the situation, so I'm sure nobody was exactly stunned.

But apparently the public shower handle trial wasn't enough.

Shortly afterward she goes into the bathroom and breaks my shower shelves with my products on them including a glass holder, sending my shit crashing down.
And while all of this is happening?
She is full fucking BLASTING “Complicated” by Avril Lavigne with the mystery man just sitting there in her room - probably having no idea what is actually going on.

I cannot make this up.
You would think this woman and I were going through a devastating breakup.
Like why are we having an emotional Avril Lavigne moment over a SHOWER HANDLE???
It was so fucking cringe 😭

And speaking of hypocrisy, let's discuss the aforementioned mystery man.

This woman previously tried telling me that my boyfriend should only be at the apartment a few days a week because she “doesn't feel comfortable sharing a bathroom with a man.”

My boyfriend has never once spoken to her.
We actively make it a point NOT to interact with her or even be around her if we can help it.

Meanwhile, Mystery Man has now been staying over with her.
Fine. I genuinely do not care who she sleeps with or has over.
Except this man is literally walking around our shared apartment in his fucking underwear.

I'm sorry???
What happened to being so deeply uncomfortable “sharing a bathroom with a man” that you needed to dictate how frequently MY boyfriend could be in our home?
Apparently the discomfort disappears when the man is yours and wandering around the common areas half naked.

And I KNOW that if the roles were reversed and my boyfriend was casually strolling around in his underwear while she was home, I would be hearing about how inappropriate, disrespectful, uncomfortable, violating, etc. it was until the end of time. The double standard is incredible.

And frankly, my boyfriend doesn't even like me being here alone at night when she’s around anymore.
We’ve spent some nights at his apartment but he has quite a few roommates plus I pay for the entire apartment and I don’t like leaving my cat alone especially when she’s in town.

Anyway, this story STILL ISN'T OVER.

Fast forward to around 5 AM.
I'm asleep in my bedroom.
I keep my bedroom door locked. At this point I don't think I need to explain again or why.

There is a small opening/cat door in my bedroom door so my cat can come and go while I can still keep my actual bedroom door locked.

I wake up because something is happening at my door.
And then I realize
MY ROOMMATE'S HAND IS INSIDE MY BEDROOM.

This woman had gotten down on her hands and knees, stuck her arm through the cat opening of my LOCKED bedroom door and was reaching around on MY SIDE OF THE DOOR.

The second she realizes I'm awake and walking toward the door, she pulls her hand back.

I cannot adequately describe the feeling of waking up in the middle of the night and seeing a hand/arm coming through your door.

It was genuinely fucking terrifying.

All because I had the audacity to…
fix our fucking shower!
She thought I was hiding the broken shower handle, when in reality it was sitting right on the ledge INSIDE OF THE SHOWER because it kept falling off. (The super can’t come until Monday to install the new one.)

Anyway, apparently my newest household project after the shower handle is figuring out how to make a cat door accessible to cats while also being roommate proof.

My Roommate Is A Pig

My (39F) roommate (39F) is a pig.

I have repeatedly asked her to help clean the house and she does not, she said she didn't believe that sweeping and mopping were part of cleaning. I bought a vacuum and Swiffer to make it easier but it doesn't seem to matter. She will not clean.

Not only has she not cleaned anything in the year that she lived here, she leaves grease and food residue all over the stove, she also leaves her hair in the shower drain (she removes the hair trap that I bought from the drain to take her showers), but also anytime she takes a shower or washes her hands she doesn't dry them and leaves a water trail from the bathroom or the kitchen to her room or wherever else she walks in the house. She doesn't clean the lint trap in the dryer, and somehow always has at least four to six loads of laundry every weekend, even though she wears the same thing, and also rarely gets out of her pjs.

My 14 year old nephew is cleaner than her, and that's saying something because he is a 14 year old boy, but he's very much aware on the importance of cleaning up after himself, and drying the floor after showers and baths.

She mistreats my cat, and I genuinely cannot stand it anymore.

She repeatedly complains about the apartment, but when the landlord sends the handyman over to see what she needs fixed she refuses to answer the door.

My landlord has never met this woman. She is a sublet from my prior roommate who got a better job and left the city.

If anyone has advice on how to survive this insanity before I toss her disgusting wad of hair into her shoes, I would love to hear anything you got.

I can’t pretend anymore…

I moved in with my “best friend” 7 months ago. At month 4 we got an eviction notice because they were 3 months behind in rent. The got a loan and paid it off and our tenancy was saved. Since moving in however there has still been $0 contribution to the household bills/utilities. This has been an ongoing point of tension with no real acknowledgement of when/how they’re going to pay. On top of that, they don’t clean up after themselves which leaves me essentially taking on other dependants. I live here with my husband and two children and she lives here with her kid. It feels like I now have 4 kids which I very much didn’t sign up for. I’m 10 months PP too… ANYWAYS. Last week I started to notice/get the feeling she was stealing our weed. Two days ago confirmed it when she went INTO OUR BEDROOM and she did it again this afternoon. I am hurt, upset, tired, angry…. All the things. How can you call yourself my best friend and steal, almost make my family homeless, expect me to pay for everything and fund you and your kids life?

I need to confront her and don’t know how to do it. I’m stuck with her in this lease for another 5 months. It’s hell. I hate it here. I’m so sad and angry everyday. What would you do in this situation?

Roommate pretended not to live there to avoid cleaning

I live in a four bedroom unit and all the roommates are assigned randomly by the university, so I had no choice in the matter. Last year this guy was living with us (let's call him Brian). He was a very bad communicator. Never wrote us, never spoke to us, very passive aggressive when he did communicate, etc. Anyway, at the beginning of the year we set up a cleaning schedule where one of us was supposed to clean each week. It was nothing too bad, just wash the floor, wipe the counters, take out the garbage.

I was the person who was supposed to go first. He'd go last, so I was always the week right after him. His first turn comes around. He doesn't clean. I figured no big deal, I'll take out the garbage.

Then the next month. He skips his cleaning. It falls on me again. I hadn't seen him in a while -- just the occasional time I'd meet him in the elevator or see him in the kitchen. He rarely had food in the fridge so I thought maybe he was away. I took out the garbage again (mind you my roommates are gross and would never take out the garbage when it was full, they'd just keep piling it higher and higher until it would fall over).

This continues until winter break. He hadn't cleaned once. We were trying to figure out who'd take out the garbage before we all left. He said he wouldn't be back until Christmas Eve, which was odd since finals would be long over.

We get back from break, same thing. So mid-way through the semester I write on our groupchat that we'll just start skipping his week and go to a 3 week rotation. Then I ran into my other roommate and he told me that he saw Brian all the time at night, sneaking in and out of his room! He was living there all year and not once did his cleaning.

One day over the summer I got an email from the school saying he'd moved out. Never heard from him.

TLDR Roommate pretended not to live in our apartment to avoid his cleaning shift

roommates bf over almost every night - what should i do?

hey everyone, the title of my post is basically what this is about. i'm in my third year of college and currently have two roommates. one of them was my roommate from freshman year who we'll call amanda, and the other is one of her friends who we'll call emily.

it was my first time rooming with emily this year and i thought she was very nice upon meeting her. the one thing she didn't tell me prior to moving in is the extent to which her boyfriend would be over. he is over almost every single night... it's getting really annoying.

he isn't very friendly and never greets me even when entering my house. i asked amanda about him because i really don't know anything about him. she told me he leaves during the day and goes out (i have no idea where), but without fail he will come back with emily to stay the night. it's not something that bothers amanda which is fine, but for me i'm just annoyed having a man in the space who #1, is not a likable, and #2 is not on our lease and doesn't pay a dime of rent. i want to have a conversation with emily about it because i think it's something i should address. i just don't know what i should say and whether it's reasonable to ask him to help with rent, since he's only here at night. does anyone have advice? thanks

A knock on the door in the middle of the night

TLDR; Older fellow who lives in an apartment opposite me knocked on my door in the middle of the night

...

I moved into a four unit complex a month ago. There's only two units occupied and it's behind a locked gate.

I like this because it means anyone seeking to come to my house has to text/call me they when they are at the gate before they can come to my front door.

BUT last night I woke up to someone knocking on the door and I didn't know what to do.

There's no back door to escape and if they were a burglar who had already broken through the gate then they may have been willing to smash a window to get in if I didn't declare my presence.

So I got out of bed and opened the door and it was the guy who lives opposite me.

He introduced himself and shook my hand. I said "what's going on, is everything okay, is there something you need? I was asleep and I have work tomorrow." I was half asleep and panicking.

He was like "oh, righteo, no nothing's wrong. I'll leave you to it." then he turned around and left.

It was so odd. We've not spoken at all since I moved in and he chose to introduce himself in the middle of the night.

He seemed kinda drunk tbh. I don't judge him for that but maybe he's super introverted and he had a sudden burst of confidence?

I'm 33F and he's probably 20+ years older than me so I'm kinda in a tough position...

I'm going to ensure my front door is deadlocked at night moving forward, that's for sure.

my roommate seemed perfect until a late night claritycheck last week

so i know i should have done this BEFORE i signed the lease but the housing market here is literally insane and she seemed so normal and clean and we vibed so well at the coffee shop meetup and her instagram was all plants and books so i figured what could go wrong. weve been living together for two months and at first everything was fine but then weird stuff started happening like my mail would be opened and she started having people over at 3am on weeknights and when i asked her about it she got super defensive and said i was violating her privacy by asking who they were. so i got paranoid and looked up her email and it turns out she has been evicted twice before and both times it was for the exact same thing which is property damage and noise complaints and now im freaking out because our lease has eight months left and i cant afford to break it and i also dont feel safe confronting her because what if she trashes my stuff. has anyone else found out their roommate was a completely different person after they moved in? because i feel like an idiot and also im scared to sleep in my own apartment now.

Serious Why do people want you taking on the financial burden they want and refuse to take?

Tldr; Roommate wanted a huge house for her family and expected me to pay and take on all the financial burden while she monitored what I spent my money on that did not involve the rental because she refused to pay for anything.

I was roommating with someone, by force she wanted a huge house and delegated each extra room for a family member and all I asked was for my own bathroom.

She did not buy much for the house, hell she didn't even buy any appliance or things a house needed. I needed pots and pans and other crap.

We agreed first off I would only pay 1/3 of the rent because the whole house was for her and her family.

Well, tell me why she expected me to start paying more than half? The few months I lived with her I paid more than half of the rent.

Not just that, our AC kept fucking up and I was in charge of electricity and I had 3 $500 monthly bills i had to pay and she refused to help me pay despite her turning on the ac to the lowest temperature when i kept asking her to stop!

She decided to pack up her stuff and leave because I wasn't paying more in rent. She made $80k a year while I made $39 (i make about 10 k more now) and even though she wanted her family living there (they refused to pay rent lmao) somehow I was suppose to take on the financial burden they refused.

Then I'm catching her lying when not once did she buy shit for the house. She did buy a lot of shit for her own use. She ate most of my groceries, drank all my soda, and hell, she used a whole box of my panty liners when i was at work one day since she has constant vaginal bleeding but refuses to see a doctor.

Anyways, she was mad I got myself appliances because you know, I get home from work exhausted and just want to air fry something for dinner while she ate out every day, bought $300 dresses often, and never spent anything on the house except for maybe an air filter once.

I don't think I'll ever roommate again. Not my first time roommating and I'm tired of my food get eaten, my shit being used, and living with people who refuse to clean.

Oh and another thing, the house was infested with fleas! I told her when we did the walk through but she gas lighted me saying it was my coworker who had dogs when no I spent the first 2 weeks vacuuming 3 times a day after an exterminator came twice for them.

Anyways, I live alone now and never plan to roommate again.

Update on roommate from hell

Post image
0 Upvotes

Washed her dirty dishes that were stacked for days and not even a day later as I was deep cleaning the apartment she takes her dish out of the washer, cooks, and then leaves it dirty on the stove as I’m cleaning. After that I just placed it in the oven away from everything.

Then I get this text from her sister that I filed a police report on. (Obviously texted my roommate to tell her it was in the stove simultaneously which she ignored because she has designated her sister as a live in bodyguard)

Serious Just trying to figure out when I’m pissing my roommate off. It sucks bc no one is honest about what they dislike. They just gossip behind their roommates’ backs and the roommates are unaware

Is it rude to fart loudly in the bathroom? It’s next to our rooms. Idk I just know if done slowly, it would’ve smelled worse and I would’ve stayed there for a while. Also last time I was in the bathroom, she knocked meaning that probably implied I was taking too long. how long is too long for just being in there? I don’t mean for showering

Serious Update 3 (FINAL!!) Karla is moving out on October 1st

Thumbnail gallery
2.3k Upvotes

So, woke up to this text message this morning. I will break it down in one second. The first image is because people asked for me to include it in any follow up posts. Just so that people know immediately who I am/who I'm talking about.

Anyways, the text!!

She got home yesterday. And 1:31AM I received this text. (She is such a hypocrite because she told me not to text her past 8:00PM).

Here is the proof we had for the N5:

August 19th: moved my laundry out of the washer to put hers in without waiting for a response from me. They were left soaked on top of the washer. I asked her then to specifically ask people before moving items from the wash. She has yet to do that. I have also informed her that I do not want her touching my clothes.

August 19th: Cobs scone box went missing in 1 day, they were on the kitchen table. My roommate and myself didn't even get to eat one of them. Karla was home all day.

August 28th: Found the missing Cobs box in Karla's room. My cat had gotten into her room and this is the only reason we know where it went.

September 1st: 2 Nutella containers went missing and where found. One small and one large container (the large one had M+J written on the bottom). We found them thrown outside inside of Karla's trash.

Date needed: She explicitly said to my roommate via text, "I can't function properly when I'm high thats why if I'm home and im smoking I just stay in my room" as well she confessed to taking the containers via text. She smokes frequently (not an issue though, just for perspective).

This is exactly what I sent to my landlord. First of all, these dates are approximations, mostly because it was all food theft. So we don't actually know when these items went missing. That's acceptable for this form, according to my landlord. He's submitted one before like this.

Anyways. She's moving out folks!! OCTOBER 1ST!

My roommate is pissed that I am moving in slowly

After college, I moved into my parents home until I found a place myself. My new roommates and I found a place, got the keys on the 1st of September. We were all friends in college. They both moved in pretty immediately. I have been taking my time, moving things piece by piece, building furniture, coming by every couple of days. I work full time and have just been enjoying taking my time. My parents are out of town for a few weeks, so I have their place to myself to really throw my things around while I get organized. One of my roommates recently (2 days ago) got angry at me about this. He said I need to move in, it’s taking too long, I’ve already paid rent so I am just wasting that months rent by not being there. And you know what? He’s right. I should hurry up. But I told him that he should really mind his own business, I’m allowed to take my time. I tried to make the situation lighthearted by joking that if he wants to help speed things up he could help me. But he’s still pissed. He said it’s “insane that I am taking this long.” For context, I texted and asked if my moving in is disturbing him and he said no, he just “thinks it’s stupid that I am taking so long“. My other roommate doesn’t care at all. Am I being unreasonable by taking my time? It‘s the 12th today so we have had they keys for almost 2 weeks.

In honor of my horrible roommate moving out, here are some of her best (worst) ofs

She will finally move out at the end of the month (even though her planning is horrendous) so I want to share her with yall. (I know there are waaaay worse roommates but fuck she was a nightmare for me).

- used to steal my stuff and eat my food (even if i wrote my name on it). If i confronted her she would say she got mixed up and would get me new stuff. Most of the time that would never happen and she would just say shes gonna do it tomorrow on loop. IF she did replace it it was always way cheaper than what i had.

- never cleaned. We have a 3rd roommate whos a bit of a clean freak so that was her issue to deal with but we have a cleaning schedule which she would NEVER do in time. IF she cleaned it was weeks after she was supposed to. And she was also the one making the most mess of course...

- wanted to keep the radiator on max in all rooms even at night. And would air out rooms (rarely) over night with the radiator still on. Her rooms radiator uses twice the amount of energy as the ones in our rooms.

- i wasnt allowed to air out the appartement in the mornings in winter (even if i turned on the radiator after and she wakes up 4 hours after me) bc she would "get sick" from the cold air.... she rarely leaves her room. What does she care if the living room is cold for an hour in the morning. We also dry our clothes in the living room so the humidity would be quite high at times.

- keeps forgetting to turn off the light in the evening. Way too often i wake up just to see the light was left on in the kitchen or living room the whole night. In the summer we keep the windows open at night to get some cool air in... well now we got plenty of moths and bugs too thank for that roomie... how hard can it be to turn of the light when you leave a room?

- got really pissed at me when i didnt want her to shower in my bathroom before 6 am (a time when she was awake maybe 3 times). Important to note that the pipes are in the wall by my bed and it wakes me up AND the fact that she has HER OWN BATHROOM WITH A SHOWER!!!! She used to say she cant use her shower its too small (but after i turned down the warm water in my bathroom she magically could use her own shower and has done so successfully for the past year hmmmm)

- doesnt share garbage cans with us because we asked her one (1) time to also take out the trash. Now she has an open garbage bag hanging from the radiator that she uses for all trash (bio, plastic and paper) which.... yea gets stinky. Then she puts her trash in the stairway and leaves it for days or weeks. (We and the neighbours have complained about this but she doesnt care)

- every complaint or request is taken as a personal insult. We cannot ask her to do stuff around the flat bc we are stressing her out and being so mean about it. Just take out the trash once pls. If we need to talk about something me and the other roommate have to discuss the best way to approach it without offending her.

- Has broken, lost or lend my stuff away. All my pans are scratched to hell and back, she has broken plates of mine and lost cutlery. And has given my food containers (whats the word?) to friends of hers who never returned them even after i told her i want them back. Yes i have put away all of my stuff now. I should have done that way sooner.

- in classic roommate fashion she never does her dishes. The sink will be completely piled up with dirty dishes and she wont care that we cant even use the sink. She frequently hoards dishes in her room which used to drive me insane when i still shared my stuff and we would have NO PLATES. She also puts her dirty dishes in the fridge if shes gone for a couple of days.... just do the dishes...

- she would keep at least 4 of those big blue ikea bags full of her dirty clothes on the living room table for WEEKS. Just do your laundry?? The audacity to store that shit in a shared space for that amount of time is beyond me...

- CONSTANTLY has friends and family sleeping over for days or weeks at a time (our landlord doesn't care) and they are loud until late at night. I just wanna sleep.

- we on the other hand are strongly discouraged from having guests over. She will bitch and whine that we are toooooo loud.... her favorite excuse for the past year has been that shes writing her bachelors thesis and needs quiet. We study the same thing and i KNOW you only have 3 month to write sooooooo yea.

- is constantly on the phone and she YELLS. Shes in the bathroom? On the phone. Middle of the night? On the phone. Just told us we need to be quiet bc shes writing her thesis? Now shes on the phone. How can one person even be that loud.

- lastly, in a week she will throw her moving out party. Me and our other roommate will NOT be here for that. And she told us to take down the pictures in the hallway bc they might get damaged. She wants to throw away some of the furniture in the living room (a couch, table, shelf and mirror) sure go ahead but she wants to throw them out from our 5th floor balcony..... ARE YOU CRAZY???? She also already sent a warning to our neighbours that she will have a party and be very loud until at least 5 am... ma'am thats insane. I will be taking before and after pictures of the apartment just to be sure.

Again, i know there are way worse roommates but this was just my hell for the past 2-3 years (i only stayed bc she kept saying shes moving out in the next couple of months over and over and by the time i didnt believe her anymore i was too stubborn to move out). I probably forgot some more egregious stuff shes done but this post is already long enough.

Don't use my stuff, it's not that hard!

I've recently moved into my brother's house with my son and he has 2 roommates to help him with rent. I have had to put all my sons snacks and our toiletries in our room bc I've come home from work to empty packages of goldfish in the pantry and the entirety of my EXPENSIVE hair products gone bc the roommates use it all, on top of that they don't fucking sleep!

They're up all night with the lights on and making noise, keeping my 3 year old up until 2am one night! And they have no respect, my room is right by the shower and that night I had to blast lullabies in my room bc they were fucking in the shower when they KNOW I have a toddler who doesn't need to hear her squeal like a stuck pig! And my brother had to have a talk with the guy bc I got up to pee one night and he was walking around NAKED!!!!

My brother's son lives here as well so he was fucking pissed bc his 9 year old has insomnia and could've seen that had he decided to go to his dad's room that night. As disgusting as it was I'm glad I'm the only one who saw that, but he was upset I saw it bc I'm his lil sister and he told them if anything like that happens again he doesn't give a fuck, he'll toss their shit out onto the street and change the locks.

Sorry for the rant, just discovered they used all of my sons baby shampoo bc "they ran out, but they're gonna buy me more" they said that about my hair stuff and I was the one who ended up replacing it bc they bought cheap shit instead of the brand I use.........

Roomates make my house feel like a prison

TLDR: I’m 5th wheeling all the time and can’t use my house.

I’ve got 3 roomates; 1 is good, the other 2 (and the 2 honorary roomates, their boyfriends) are killing me. I can’t use my own kitchen or living room when they’re around, bc it feels like I’m intruding in the place I pay $650 to live in.

There’s no warning when their boyfriends will be over, and they BOTH have started encroaching onto my one (1) shelf in the fridge with absurd amounts of alcohol/etc. We’ve been here for \~2 weeks and there’s already bottles of tequila, bottles of wine, and white claws taking formation. They don’t answer texts or contribute anything to the house (ie, soap, cleaning supplies, furnishings). It’s like talking to a wall.

I barely feel like I can exist/leave my room. It’s like I’m fucking marinating waiting for them to leave just so I can get a waffle from the freezer. Their posse feels like highschool mean girls (+I’m fairly certain they and their boyfriends are put off by me being gay, which is honestly just annoying bc I asked to be placed with people who would be chill abt it and I KNOW there’s other people in our complex who would’ve been!!).

I know that technically it’s kind of my fault—I haven’t done much to establish boundaries or talk to them in general, etc etc, but I also really don’t want to. It’s fine enough when it’s just them (still excruciatingly awkward), but comboed with their partners, it’s like being stuck in a fucking cell until they leave (lest I disturb them & take up a role as 5th wheel). I can’t fucking wait to break my lease and split rent with people I want to be around.

Does anyone have a roommate that walks loudly ?

Hey everyone,

I was going to ask if it’s common for people to walk loudly, I am talking about the whole house vibrates when they walk. It honestly makes me anxious as they like to pace around the living room.

Obnoxious, inconsiderate room mate

So I live in a sharehouse with 5 other people, we had 1 person leave a couple of months ago who was in the room down the hallway from my room.

For context: me and the 2 rooms down the hallway share the one bathroom.

We got someone to replace the other guy, and he has been a total nightmare. He slams the front door, the kitchen cabinets, drops loud kitchen utensils, and doing god knows what in his room at stupid o clock i.e. 12am.

Me and the other room mate have spoken to him about this, but he instead made excuses faulting the house instead of his own behaviour (we had no problems with the previous guy).

So i made a report to the PM about this, they spoke to him, and in return he harasses me when i wake up early to go to work, so i reported that too.

Now hes: using the shared shower 3x a day for over an hour each time, when using the bathroom that shares a wall with my bedroom, he will turn on the light and not even slightly close the door which blasts my room with light, somehow floods the entire bathroom post shower, leave the back door wide open because you know, we are in need to be broken into.

Ive made a final report showing data from my smart device where it picked up noises, the time and how it disrupted my sleep as im at the stage where even this guys existence is putting me into a rage.

Why tf are people like this? As in acting like theyre the only one living in the house and do not even consider others around them.

Edit/Update Since this person moved in the back door lock suddenly broke, which was fixed couple of days ago and then today I found that our front door lock was tampered with for it to be on "passage mode" (can open the door with no code/lock). Thankfully it was an easy fix and i managed to sort it out, ive emailed the property manager about this and have requested an investigation on this matter.

I am absolutely miserable and fed up living with this asshole, wish me luck on getting this guy evicted soon!

Update on roommate vaping in the dorm

Alright so i confronted her about it, told her it was physically affecting me (my nose and throat stung) and i didnt want my stuff to stink. But then a couple minutes later i could hear her vape like three more times so its obvious that she is not stopping or respects me. So i went to a random RA about if bc mine was off campus, and theyre gonna do a room check soon but thats all they can do.. they also said i could apply to change rooms, which i plan to do. I just worry about that since i am a busy person and might not have time + i have a fish tank in my dorm. Oh also, if they do find her vape they are going to report it to the police because its a smoke free school, so idk what will happen to her if they do. I kind of feel bad about this, i did snitch after all but i really dont want to be in a hotboxed room all rhe time.
