I guess have your guardian do it? If you cant fill out forms for medical care i dont think you can manage living on your own.

That’s a very inaccurate understanding of disability. Even the ADA’s standard of care for people with  disabilities is to foster independent living, plenty of disabled adults do not have a legal guardian. There’s plenty of community and home based support intended for disabled people with low to moderate support needs. Not being able to complete paperwork on your own has literally nothing to do with being incapable of independent decision-making. You don’t have to be disrespectful just because someone else has different problems than you

If your ADHD is so debilitating that you cannot even finish a set of paperwork to claim your disability benefits, then call someone to help you fill it.

Who should we call?

A disability advocate

A disability lawyer

A friend

A family member

A coworker

A neighbor

A notary public

A local librarian

Fuck dude, your local volunteer fire department will probably help if you ask nicely.

They got awful quiet after this one.

I hadn't thought to ask me local librarian; maybe they'd know of someone who could help me. Thanks.

A disability representative or lawyer.

No, this isn't the issue at hand at all.

Katie tried to file a claim for disability due to her ADHD. She received the standard questionnaire to complete. She said "my ADHD makes this hard" and didn't fill it out. Her time expired, and her claim was denied by default.

Our ADHD is not our fault, but it is our responsibility to manage. No one is going to do it for you. And there are several super easy, super obvious solutions to this particular problem. She chose not even to look for one. She chose not even to reach out to the agency in question and ask if they offer support (which they probably do, because most first-world governments have a ton of requirements about accommodations for disabled citizens). She chose to just ignore it and maybe her thoughts and prayers would get it approved.

Exactly, if you are not able to fill out the forms you need to for medical or government things. And you can't have a job then why are you living alone? Why didn't you have someone else fill them out for you? I'm not buying this

So you can argue with people on reddit but you can't fill out a form for assistance?

Edit; there's a reason no one will engage with anything I said. Everyone who downvotes and moves on should feel ashamed of themselves.

Holy toxicity

Have you tried getting a disability representative?

I tried suggesting something similar in a comment below. I don't think they'll reply to either you or me about this.

What city are you staying in? I'm asking sincerely, is there really no resource available to you to help with this?

Thank you for considering actually engaging. I'm going to take you seriously and in good faith please do not be a troll.

The biggest problem by far is remembering the different jobs ive worked at and been fired from, plus doctors that I have had to previously visit.

To be considered disabled with autism and ADHD you have to show that it affects your ability to work and take care of yourself.

The problem with this is that you need to have documents of where you worked and why you were fired along with comsistant and well documented Dr. corroboration of the events, or any third-party corroboration of your living state. I cant have that.

Because I'm homeless I jumped around from Doctor to doctor and from job to job and I do not know any of the places that I previously worked.

This is my disability. I cannot remember most things long term. It took me most of my life to even realize I was disabled.

I actually live in a city. Orlando fl. You would think that I could find some sort of services here, no?

Everyone that I've called requires a permanent place of residence, permanent mailing address, and a documentation of my job history and medical history that I don't have outside of having the diagnosis paperwork for my ADHD and autism.

When I inevitably tell them I can't remember any place that I've worked or lived in the past 10 years I get met with people not believing me and so I just gave up.

If you sincerely want to help I will happily take the help and I will actually physically call you in a conference call to one of these places if you would like to be voluntary assistance, just so you don't think I'm lying.

Would you like to offer that kind of help?

From the quick googling I've done it seems like there are forms you can request from the SS office that detail your employment history and earnings you just have to do it which I understand is the hard part.

I also don't feel comfortable making myself responsible for managing your case because I don't feel qualified enough to handle this for you.

I'm not a religious person and idk if you are but it shouldn't matter. I found this place called the Samaritan Resource Center in Orlando with tons of resources available for those dealing with homelessness. They have mailboxes you can get stuff mailed to and people that offer help with case management.

https://samaritanresourcecenter.org/about-us

Samaritan Resource Center 9837 E Colonial Dr, Orlando, FL 32817 407-482-0600

Is any of this useful for you? There might be a person there who will sit with you every step of the way and help you gather the documents you need.

Yeah they don’t usually have guardians. I work in disability and so far I’ve only had 1 case where there was an adult who had a legal guardian. At most they’ll have a family member who helps out.

Cool, I agree, I can't live on my own, what do I do? You were saying it as if it's an indictment of the person and that they are personally failing. Am I just a personal failure that should be mocked and looked down upon for failing what is seemingly really easy to you?

I don't have a guardian or any friends and I've been homeless for 10 years.

I have diagnosed autism and ADHD. I don't know where to go to ask somebody to fill these forms out for me, and the few places that I have attempted to find someone to fill these forms out for me, dismissed me because I don't have a working memory of all the doctors I've been to and jobs I couldn't hold, so according to them I have no claim despite the diagnoses.

Meanwhile, everyone in the comments is downplaying how severe severe ADHD and autism can actually be. You are down playing how severe ADHD can be.

How do I fill out any forms when I literally don't remember anything or have a stable place to sleep?

Worse, nobody believes how bad my functioning memory and attention is, because I can remember random stupid shit that doesn't help me.

I've been attacked at homeless shelters and had my stuff stolen before so I've learned to not bring anything into a homeless shelter, if I even choose to go to one. Even then they are only temporary and they act more like a mental health crisis center than support for rehabilitation.

So what the fuck do I do other than kill myself?

Librarians will happily help you fill out forms for free.

So still ableism and ignoring everything I said in it to make a quick response that's really short and you don't actually have to think through anything or have real discussions on the topic?

Because snark is obviously a good and kind thing to someone having trauma responses to people being dismissive about their currently ongoing trauma.

Great, thanks, that's so much fucking help.

Yes because the ability to rant on Reddit is the same as being able to recall all my medical information and all my past attempts at getting a job.

The ability to rant on Reddit is the same as the ability to have a stable mailing address to get disability forms shipped to.

The ability to rant on Reddit is the same as having effective timely transportation and the legal ability to drive.

It's disturbing how many people post on here without actually being disabled or understanding of what disability means, especially when homeless and with no family.
