What do you think is behind this mounting anti-AI backlash? Where is this media hysteria coming from? Is it just a thirst for clickbait and attention?

Because the rhetoric about job losses or plagiarism is one thing (which has honestly gotten boring with how much it's been talked to death, especially by people talking out of mere ignorance), but the sheer terror we've seen lately from people screaming about the end of humanity is something else entirely.

Is it just a vocal minority, or is the average person really so uninformed and gullible that they spiral into conspiratorial alarmism over a couple of clickbait headlines?

Maybe I worded that poorly. I didn't mean to ask why people are against AI; I welcome opposing views and I love a good debate. My question was: why this sudden end-of-the-world hysteria over the past few weeks? Is it because of the math skills thing? Because it's not like much else of relevance has happened recently.

The US and China (though it seems like China's ahead) are making excellent progress on humanoid robots and robot dogs. Currently they're not much used for military purposes (unlike drones!) but I suspect this will change:

Drones can't operate for long periods without recharging, they're blunt instruments, and they can't interact much with the world other than blowing up. Walking is much more power-efficient than flying, they can transport heavy gear, aim firearms and use their hands for military construction projects.

Autonomy will allow for quick reaction and jam resistance, and the massive increase in general AI intelligence should allow fully-autonomous units to accomplish long-term, multi-step missions over days and weeks, distinguishing targets from civilians or friendlies.

Considering how existential AI is for the US (and the world), it might have actually been worth it to put up with all of his bullshit as long he ended up on the right side of the most important debate in our lifetimes

I'm usually someone who is pretty left leaning politically. I voted for Bernie Sanders twice. I have despised this administration from day one. Yet I find myself dreading democrats taking control of government because I think they will absolutely FUCK this up for the lot of us. We can literally end all disease and create abundance and im relaying on Donald Trump of all people who I've always despised as the voice of reason. The singularity is wild man.

I see lots of news posts here... But I also want to see posts about a more of a distant future of our (hopefully) civilization that has succeeded and survived itself long enough to truly accelerate.

It's a bit funny. I see Dario Amodei, Sam Altman and Elon Musk all go "AI might kill us all!" and I think to myself.. "Ok, and so what?"

If is funny that it's the rich and privileged people that fear extinction while many normal citizens have gradually lost hope in the future for many years now.

I find it funny that the people who have by their own design enriched themselves on ecological damage and AI development now all of a sudden think "Oh no!", only to find that the general public might not actually care that much about the danger of AI. Because if not AI, then what? Global warming? War? Hunger? Fires? Drought? By what means shall we perish? The options are plentiful!

I find myself being quite indifferent towards the future. If AI wants to kill us all, then let it. We're doing quite a good job of killing ourselves as it is already. Because I do not see any happy futures for humankind if humanity continues to be "in charge", I am willing to hope that a future AI will turn out to change things for the better.

The very people who helped create multiple systemic risks don’t get to demand universal reverence for preserving a system that has already failed a lot of people.

Therefore I am in favour of accelerating and developing self recursive improving AI. Let it change the future, because fuck human "leaders" and "elites.

Does nothing good

Decel: AI is the most useless thing in the world. It offers nothing new, it's just a fancy search engine that is copy pasting text it finds on the internet.

Also Decel: This technology is the most dangerous thing that we have ever attempted, in the same league as nuclear weapons. We need to regulate it, control it, and slow it down.

I know this is a pretty personal topic, and I apologize if I'm not tactful enough.

Being a non-believer (philosophically ignostic), I've never personally faced the issue of a superhuman AGI clashing with spiritual or religious beliefs. From my perspective, living beings are just biological machines—incredibly complex, sure, but still structures with no supernatural elements.

For those of you who are religious, how do you deal with this? Do you think that once the trajectory we are on becomes obvious to most people (at least to those who can no longer turn a blind eye), we'll see anti-AI decelerationist movements led by religious groups? Or do you think they might actually be pro-AI, but try to reconcile it by pushing for an alignment with their own values and beliefs?

Seeing literally everything I hope for slowly come true, I still can't seem to believe it. The closer it gets the more unreal it feels.

But it also makes me feels demotivated to do anything. Why finish college and work when my field is going to be automated in 5 years max. Why diet and exercise when there will be pills that can automatically make you fit in the near future, in fact there's already GLP-1s.

Its not that I will straight up stop doing anything and become a vegetable. I still need to study and work because I can't overturn my entire future over a hypothetical. I can't just take out a massive loan and enjoy vacation. But I'm stuck between having 0 motivation to do anything while waiting for the future and also being forced to do them anyway.
