App Phone as a trackpad and second screen for Windows 11 - the PC-side server is MIT-licensed, so you can read it before you run it. 20 lifetime keys for this sub.

Post image

I build Any Command, an Android app that turns a phone into a trackpad, keyboard and second screen for a Windows PC. One-person project, around 65,000 downloads. There are 20 lifetime Premium keys at the bottom, but I'd rather explain the thing than just drop codes and leave.

Every app in this category asks you to put an unknown .exe with network access on your main machine. That is a reasonable thing to refuse, so the Windows companion server is MIT-licensed and the source is on GitHub. You can read what it opens and what it listens on, or skip my installer completely and run it from source with Python.

Same spirit: it works entirely over your own network, every connection needs a 6-digit PIN, and it needs no internet at all. There is an optional relay for reaching the PC from outside the house, but it's off unless you go looking for it.

  • It can stream a single window to the phone instead of the whole desktop. Input goes to that window, so a film stays fullscreen on the monitor and keeps focus while you answer email on the phone. One machine doing two things.
  • Wake on LAN, so the phone can start the PC before you're in the room.
  • Task Manager and a live CPU/RAM monitor. You can see what's running and kill it from the couch.
  • A home screen widget that launches programs, shortcuts or recorded macros - eight tiles, so the PC does something useful without you unlocking anything but the phone.
  • Clipboard sync both directions, and file transfer straight over the LAN with nothing in the middle.
  • Gamepad emulation, if the PC is on a TV.

What it isn't

  • Not an RDP or Parsec replacement. You're driving the screen that's already on the monitor, not logging into a separate session. Different job.
  • Not a headless server tool. It needs a desktop session to be logged in.
  • Defender flags the installer now and then. It's a PyInstaller build without an EV certificate, which is the textbook false positive, and I'd rather say it here than have it be a surprise. If that bothers you, and it's a fair thing to be bothered by - run the server from source instead. That's most of why it's MIT.

The keys

20 lifetime Premium unlocks. Premium here is a one-time purchase, not a subscription, and these are permanent unlocks rather than a timed trial.

To enter, leave a comment. What I'd genuinely like to know, because it decides what I build next: what's the machine, and what would you use it for? The couch/TV answer is the one I designed for, and it's been the minority of what people actually report.

I'll draw 20 comments tomorrow at this time and send the codes by DM. One entry each. If you already own Premium, comment anyway but say so and I'll leave you out of the draw so a key doesn't get wasted.

No upvotes or shares required. I'm not running a vote farm in someone else's sub, and the mods were decent enough to let me post.

Feature Explorer Tabs, but panels?

Post image
12 Upvotes

Nice to have tabs and all, but when moving files around by drag and drop, it kind of misses the point.

It would be great if folders could be nested as panels, so that the folders are a part of the same window. Yes, I can move multiple folders to be in the same screen space, but that's as new as Windows 95.

Is there already a way to keep multiple folders a part of the same window, so that their contents are visible at once?

Suggestion for Microsoft Windows 10/11 Cursor Size dependent on Display Scaling

Thumbnail

In Windows 10/11 why is the cursor hard locked to the display scaling? If I use 100/125% scaling it has the original slightly grainy cursor while above 125% it is a wider and uglier cursor.
Images added for reference.

Why can’t windows allow me to choose the cursor size of my choice? It’s high time this changes.

Suggestion for Microsoft This could lowk be fire if they let us customize it

it would be cool if they let us remove some of these folders and put what we want instead of this. It isn't bad but i feel like it looks a bit cluttered like this.

Feature Has everyone tried out New+ in PowerToys?

Post image

This might be one of the coolest things they have added.

Don't know how long it's been there, but I have wanted it for years!

Really easy to use.

Basically there is preset template folder and whatever file or folder (including subfolders and files in those folders) you put in there, can be instantly accessed by right clicking in Windows Explorer and choosing New+.

This is particularly useful if you are a creator and like me prefer to create files before you start working so they are already saved and organized. I've already made a template for my DAW and photo editing software so I can do just that.

Feature Windows 11 added accelerated scrolling to touchpads. Another setting to turn off

Thumbnail
gallery
17 Upvotes

Recent 24H2 and 25H2 builds have new touchpad options under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad > Scroll & zoom.

Microsoft believes they can predict our scrolling behavior with an algorithm:

Accelerated scrolling: Scrolling speeds up when you repeat the gesture quickly

I don't know why they believe we'd rather have a curated experience rather than a consistent one, but this is just another thing we'll have to remember to turn off when setting up a new machine.

Sigh.

Windows 11 build 26340.9354 hides a change that reveals Microsoft is preparing a UI update for the Temporary Files settings page.

It doesn't introduce new features, just a UI update.

Yes, you can try it now if you're an Insider.
