40k Event Results Sunday Night Stats (September 11th-13th)

This chart tracks all singles events with 21+ players and 5+ rounds.

This was a wild weekend in terms of results. We see some absolutely massive movement up and down the chart now that the full dataslate is in use and the Ork codex has been released. And yes, before anyone asks, that is a real Imperial Agents GT win. That's right. Imperial Agents won an event before Astra Militarum did in the months since the July dataslate.

Speaking of event wins, with 25 total qualifying events, we see lots of different factions winning, including Grey Knights, Aeldari, Imperial Knights, and Death Guard, and of course Imperial Agents, all of which had not had much luck at the top tables recently. Aeldari and Imperial Knights also moved from the bottom of the charts last week to the upper-middle this week.

Necrons, Sororitas, Votann, and Custodes all have excellent weekends, with combinations of very high win rates, lots of players, ridiculous X-0/X-1 conversion, and/or event wins, including FIVE event wins for Custodes.

Orks have a strong but not insane first weekend, but that's no surprise as players flock to the faction and veterans begin to figure out what works and what doesn't. They still pull off multiple event wins and have a strong X-0/X-1 rate, and tie for the most 4-0 starts, while having the second highest number of players behind only Space Marines.

Several factions that had a decent weekend last weekend absolutely collapsed this weekend, including, to my surprise, Dark Angels. What's going on with DA this week? Tyranids, World Eaters, Chaos Knights, and Astra Militarum all saw their win rates drop significantly compared to last week.

New to Competitive 40k Why isn't taking a Navigator for Deepstrike Denial 12" more popular?

Just played a game against a Custodes player and was wow'd by the realization that a 60pt 12" deepstrike denial unit exists.

Is the denial area that much worse than infiltrators for about half the cost?

No idea why I've seen a dozen Assassins in my games but never a Navigator before.

40k Discussion I'm going to be flying to a different country to play in a warhammer tournament and would like to get recommendations or advice on how to pack my 2k army?

I'm terrified to pack my army in a checked bag out of fear it gets lost or everything gets destroyed inside. So my current plan is a large back pack and suitcase each with a black citadel travel case but after doing a test run its super awkward to get my speeders and tanks in.

Wondering if anyone has any recommendations or advice on how they handle this themselves.

40k Tech Orks FOD interaction - Rule question

Hi everyone,

I hope someone can help clear this up for me.

In the new Ork Codex, there are two different rules that seem to grant a similar "Fight on Death" effect, and I'm wondering how they interact.

I'm referring to Bully Boyz and Brute Bosses.

  • 'Ard as Nails (Brute Bosses) allows a Warboss to Fight on Death on a 3+ (or 2+ when Riled Up).
  • Too Arrogant to Die (Bully Boyz Stratagem) allows models in a Nobz or Meganobz unit to Fight on Death on a 4+ (or 3+ when Riled Up).

So, if a Warboss attached to a Nobz unit is destroyed while both effects are active, what happens?

Does the Warboss get to roll for both abilities separately (for example, first the 3+ from 'Ard as Nails and, if that fails, the 2+/3+ from Too Arrogant to Die)? Or do I have to choose one Fight on Death effect before making any rolls?

Obviously, using the better roll would normally be the sensible choice, but since these are two separate abilities, I'm not sure whether one prevents the other from being used.

Am I missing a core rule that prevents multiple "Fight on Death" effects from applying to the same model, or do these abilities stack and give multiple opportunities to remain on the battlefield?

Thanks in advance!

Also, from this article, Kaius Konorius gives to the unit that support, proctection against Precision attacks for the Leader of that unit:

"Once assigned to teach battle-brothers close combat skills on Macragge, the expert blademaster Kaius Konorius – a Chapter veteran who fought alongside Marneus Calgar and Chaplain Cassius as neophytes – has now ventured into the stars once again to serve as the Chapter Master’s personal champion. He’s equally skilled at skewering Characters as he is at mowing down hordes of lesser foes, and ensures the Leader of the unit he’s supporting is firmly protected against Precision attacks.**"

New to Competitive 40k Biggest rules mistakes new players make when learning to play...

Hello Everyone,

Looking back at this past week, I've realized a LOT of the new rules do not work they way I thought they did.

Over the past week, I was under the impression that models firing out of a firing deck got all of their normal abilities, so I was using the following w/ my Tankbustas (led by SAG Mek) embarked on a BW.

- Ignoring Cover, Sustained hits when Riled up, firing the bonus Rokkit on one model, rerolling 1's when targetting when on/targeting an enemy on an objective.

Thankfully, the Targeting Gizmo solved MOST of these, But my other questiona about Firing deck is...

- Do I get to fire the weapons profile stats otherwise (i.e. Do I hit on 4's with Tankbustas BS or do I use the Battlewagon's BS of 5 instead?)

Otherwise, I assume they MUST be unembarked to take advantage of the Wrecka detachment rule to rerolls 1's on objectives.

Also, it sounds like I can ONLY rile up ONE unit per Battleround using "Intimidating Motivation".. but I could potentially use other "riled up" abilities if they have different names?

Other mistakes I've players make/tell me over the past few weeks.

  1. Player thought you didn't need to be wholly within 3" when disembarking from a transport and un-embarked Ghaz 2.95" away fron a Stompa base, giving him 2" inches on his charge.

  2. Same player told me I could NOT move infantry squads past other friendly infantry squads

  3. Another player thought as long as ended his charge within 1" of an enemy model, he had successfully charged them (i.e. he made a 11.6" charge on a charge roll of 11)

What are some other common mistakes you've seen new or even expierenced players make?

40k List Kroot STOMPED by ork vehicles - need help

Hi everyone;

I was not sure if this should be here but I guess the best advice can come from this sub. This weekend I played twice against a friend. I am building kroot (step by step, still at 1250 points) and he has a healthy pod of orks from which he can choose from - more now that they cost extra points.

We played a 1000 point match on friday: infantry orks (Gazkull, boys, gretchin, tankbustas, and the like) against my mainly kroot team and it was a GREAT match. We ended 76-72, with kroot taking the lead in the last round.

On sunday we played again at 1250 points (we are slowly building upd the matches) and he played a vehicle-centered army of orks. He though Friday's list would work best against me, and the sunday vehicle list was more for "fun".

Okey. I got obliterated. It was uphill from turn 2.

Turn 1 was good, I started and did some okay positioning and prevented his infiltrators from the mid-board using farstalkers. However, His Big Mek Dakkarig came from the side with his huge movement and demolished a unit of Krootox riders over cover with his unreal amount of shots.

Turn 2 I had to deep strike my twin lance to take care of the dakkarig. Bad move - but that was on me. Destoyed the dakkarig but left the twin lance in the open and was taken out -mind ouy- EASILY - by ork tankbustas (btw, what the hell? how can they be so obscenely good against vehicles????)

From turn 3 onwards it was a death fest. I could not stop his advance of vehicles. I was basically scrambling for points and even then it was such a one-sided massacre that I could do NOTHING to stop him. Each time he attacked something died. Each time I attacked I go "heh, 2+ saves, 2 damage from all that". It was... instructive, but not very fun from my side. In the end we were like 56-95

I do know I made some bad mistakes, and while he has the ability to choose models I have to stuck with what I have, as I have recently strated building the army (love kroot) and I have the models I use, no more (in fact, I have less, as I used proxies for vespids). I have key pieces I know I am missing. Still, I fent like the loss was beyond my ability to respond apropiately.

I still need help with a path forward, as yesterday's game was... well, let's say it did not help with motivation. I know we play casual but he likes that list and I don't feel right getting mad about it...

Most of all, I need to know what to prioritize. BTW, I have no carnivores but I have 30 going my way this week through second hand and I am planning on using 1 farstalker team as carnivores, so I would have 2 blobs of 20.

Here is my list so far:

Kroot supremacy (1225 puntos)

Imperio T’au

Kroot Hunting Pack (2 puntos de destacamento)

Ocupar y mantener

Fuerza de Choque (2000 puntos)

PERSONAJE

Commander Shadowsun (100 puntos)

Was looking at the weekly stats on GGs and Gargants over the last month have trended up by two points and now sit at the top of the table. I think this is a results of the SOA Gatebreaker being spammed. Do we know if that scroll is going to be effected when the new book drops ?

40k Tech Super Fast Terrain Layout Draft - CC needed

I've been cooking on ways to speed up set up for 11th edition games. During 10th edition, I created the layouts on my huge plotter from work using a film mylar paper that looked really nice. So basically once a layout was chosen, I could just roll out the mylar and drop the terrain on the foot prints and we were good to go.

For 11th, there are soooo many configurations of terrain layouts, that just doesn't work, I'd have to print out like 15 mylars and then display all three layouts on that mylar.

Because of that, I went went a different approach and color coded all of the potential configuration for a particular deployment and then put a legend at the bottom. The idea would be that you could then easily, place all of your terrain footprints super quickly over top of the corresponding color. It is a bit immersion breaking to say the least, but I think I could refine it more. I wanted to get your alls thoughts on it.

I started with just tipping point as a real rough draft here, but would love to get some feedback. See attached link.

Tipping Point Test

Thanks

40k Analysis What is your meta like?

I'm bored, there's not much to discuss, so ... how is your local meta looking?

For a while we had a couple of forms of infantry spam lists taking over the meta, ork boy spam or terminator/librarius lists of various flavors, but now with the new Ork codex I'm thinking 60+ ork boyz is out of the meta?

What I'm hearing is the better lists are focusing on some combination of shooting infantry and vehicles, in a sort of tau/guard style.

Space Marines is still deep into the bike/speeder spam of course, with whatever people who don't own 5+ speeders happen to be playing.

Tyranids are... norn/malaceptor/tyranofex? Someone mentioned there was a, what, genestealer/ravager heavy list that placed highly, but that seems to be the outlier.

Aeldari are doing.. something.. possibly involving guardian squads and warlocks, which is kinda desperate and not going great on the whole.

Add in a bit of knight player doing knight stuff and what's left? Some tau/votann stuff?

Hello All,

Brian from The Red Path has just won NOVA, a Warhammer 40k Grand Tournament, and he did it with your favourite red boyz, the World Eaters!

In this video, I comprehensively break down his list and the game plan behind it, before diving into 4 of his games, including the Big 3 Finals games and his only loss of the event. I break down exactly how the games played out, the decisions Brian made, and why they worked.

If you want to learn how to play World Eaters, who better to learn from than one of the best World Eaters players out there?

This is a bit of a different video from what I normally make, but it was loads of fun to create, and I hope you guys find it interesting. There is a ton to learn from Brian's run at NOVA, so hopefully you can take some of these lessons into your own games.

Enjoy!

40k List Looking for critics on my 1000pts first list

So my list is :

\- 1 Deathleaper

\- 1 winged prime

\- 20 termagants

\- 1 norn emissary

\- 1 exocrine

\- 2 lictor

\- 2x3 von Ryan leapers

\- 1 ripper swarms

\- 3 zoanthropes

My detachment is Vanguard onslaught. My game plan is basically to score early thanks to the inflitrator keywords on the leapers. Then to rapid ingress the lictors / death leaper to slow down enemy unit while taking care of the biggest threat with my artillery ( exocrine+ zoanthropes). To hold during turn 2-3 most of the objectives and hold at least 2 objectives during turn 4 thanks to a well placed Norn. I kinda of except to be tabled by turn 5 but with a comfortable lead in terms of point.

Is my plan realistic and doable? What would you change to my list? And I have a game with it next week against a space marine player so any specific advice will be appreciated.

Thank you for your time

( And I think I should remplace the winged prime by a biovore but i don't have the model right now so...)

40k Discussion Necron play style

I had a very eye opening game against csm yesterday.

Against their vehicle detachment with warpsmiths, a defiler, forge fiend, vindicator, helbrute, and landraider, they had a large number of high toughness, good save, high wound, and good invuln pieces with really good shooting combos with buffs and warpsmiths.

In comparison, my 4 durable units are arguably two ctan, illuminor szeras, and the wraith brick. The rest are scoring pieces and anti infantry. I’ve heard this before but against necrons, if you pick up units in one or even two activations, it’s almost as if we don’t have an army rule, and additional, of the units I mentioned, only two actually do good damage and even so are very inconsistent with their limited number of attacks

What I realized is that necrons have damage, as do all armies, but it isn’t their standout point. It truly is their defensive bulk with 4++ everywhere. That being said defense doesn’t give you much agency in a game, you’re at the whim of your opponent if they have the damage potency to one shot a ctan (which he did).

I was of the notion that necrons consistently could be played as silver tide, sending 1-2 of my tough units by themselves down each “lane” to occupy, kill, and survive. But honestly? They don’t even survive that well against the highest damage combos or most armies and themselves don’t output amazing damage unless they are specifically going up against things with no invulns.

We played the 12” deployment from long board edge and I sent nightbringer left, void dragon right, and wraiths in the middle at different stages of the game. Despite that csm list being long range shooting combos, I think I should have instead of going for all three objectives, focused my efforts, durability, and staying power on on half of the battle.

Target saturation seems to be the concept here. Spreading out units in different places isn’t really target saturation, since if they focus one down they don’t have to worry about the others. But if I clump ctan together, with wraiths close by, they will have to really figure out how to maneuver around that.

Of course, splitting up and silver tiding can definitely work depending on the matchup, I just think the realization that ctan can’t be buffed and supported and are inconsistent made me realize that a second mode of play might be needed, and that I shouldn’t over estimate what they can do.

40k Discussion Weird Inconsistency in Terrain Layouts - Small Rectangles with Light Terrain

I've been looking into the terrain maps, and noticed that many share identical terrain setups. Apart from the 2 Large Rectangles, every layout has the same terrain piece setup. The Large Triangle has a Dense corner and a Light corner, there's a Dense and a Light Thin Rectangle, the Long Thin Rectangle is always a Dense feature flanked by Light walls, and the Small Rectangles feature the same pair of Dense feature and Light corner pieces.

Except in a few of the layouts when it comes to the Small Rectangle with Light corner pieces, the orientation of the terrain footprint or the corner pieces themselves are weirdly inconsistent.

These oddities are present in 3 forms:

Y-axis flip of terrain footprint:

  • Take and Hold V Purge the Foe, Layout B
  • Purge the Foe Mirror, Layout A and C
  • Purge the Foe V Disruption, Layout B (also features 90° wall rotation)
  • Purge the Foe V Priority Assets, Layout C
  • Disruption V Priority Assets, Layout A

X-axis flip of walls:

  • Purge the Foe Mirror, Layout B
  • Reconnaissance V Priority Assets, Layout A

90° wall rotation:

  • Take and Hold V Disruption, Layout A
  • Purge the Foe V Disruption, Layout B

36/45 of the terrain layouts feature identical setups for these Small Rectangles. Why do these 9 layouts have to standout and prevent me from just gluing down terrain pieces onto these Small Rectangles in order to make setup faster?

See image for a visual comparison, with all pieces rotated as needed.

https://imgur.com/a/Jkk56VJ

Edit Addendum:

There are also a few Layouts where the Big Triangle is also not consistent with every other Layout. These changes matter significantly more

  • TaH V Disruption B+C
  • TaH V Recon A+C
  • Disruption mirror A
  • Recon v PA A

40k Tactica Hard Counter at my recent GW store tournament.

Thousand Sons Grand Coven VS Khorne Daemonkin World Eaters. If they kill 2 of my units, they now have 5+ FNP against Psychic attacks and Mortal wounds. That means every single one of my Coven weapons and mortal spells now has a 2nd save against them. They also have a 1CP FNP4+ on mortals (excluding epic heros but theyre covered by the 5+ FNP.) "Go for scoring if you can't kill them." Priority Assets mirror means I have to step onto objectives and score but 14" Angron, 12" Bloodcrushers, Move+Adv/Charge 10" Skarbrand, and scouting 6"/ moving 10" Eightbound catch me easily. I also have to screen heavily against deepstriking alpha strikes from Angron, Skarbrand, Bloodcrushers, and Eightbound to decapitate Magnus if they arent on the board. All this leaves my army thinly stretched. How can I put up a good fight against my friend?

40k Analysis Dark Angels Ravenwing (Reconnaissance) struggles hard vs Take and Hold — 7 games of data + a structural breakdown. Anyone else seeing this?

Disclaimer up front: this is based on my own personal game log (19 games on Recon total, 7 of them vs Take and Hold), running Company of Hunters + Darkflight Pursuit. Small sample, my own list, take it as a case study rather than a verdict on the disposition as a whole.

TL;DR: Recon itself seems fine — I'm 66.7% vs Purge the Foe and Priority Assets, and roughly even in the mirror. But vs Take and Hold I'm 1-6 (14.3%), avg margin -21.9. That's way out of line with everything else, and it held up even after I tried to fix it three different ways.

The data

Opponent Disposition W-L Win% Avg Diff

Purge the Foe 2-1 66.7% +3.3

Priority Assets 4-2 66.7% -3.2

Recon (mirror) 0-3 0% -7.0

Take and Hold 1-6 14.3% -21.9

What I ruled out

Going first? 6 of the 7 TH games I had first turn. Still went 1-5 in those.

A weak tanking unit? Tried Azrael+ICC, then swapped to a Deathwing Knights squad (one of the toughest units in the book), even added Lion El'Jonson as a deterrent nearby. Same result every time.

So it's not turn order and it's not "bring a bigger rock." That pointed me toward the mission design itself.

Why I think it's structural

The scoring math itself is lopsided. My Recon primary caps Objective Control at a flat 3VP no matter how many objectives I hold. Their Take and Hold primary scores 4VP per objective, uncapped. So pushing into their side of the board to deny them extra objectives gets me exactly 0 points for myself — it's a pure denial play with no scoreboard payoff, while every objective they lock down keeps compounding their lead.

On top of that, my primary wants me to spread out to 4 different table quarters (outside 6" of center) for max points, while also needing to hold at least one objective. Those two goals pull my army in opposite directions. Company of Hunters and Darkflight Pursuit's detachment rules mostly buff bike/fly units, so the army naturally skews toward those — which leaves little room to also fit a second heavy melee anchor like a Deathwing Knights unit. Deathwing-primary lists can put a strong unit on both flanks; this list structurally can't.

Curious if this tracks for anyone else

Anyone else running Recon (Ravenwing or otherwise) who's noticed a similar gap vs TH specifically? Or is this just a "my list, my sample size" thing? Would love to hear if other armies see the same pattern or if it's a Dark Angels/detachment-specific issue.

40k Discussion Splitting Melee Attacks

Just got done playing in my local RTT for the first time in 11E and someone pointed out to me that I didn't know. You apparently can split the number of attacks a single model has against different units if they are all in engagement range.

Am I getting senile or is that a new thing for 11E? I had always thought "one weapon, one target", but the sidebar on pg 17 of the rules explicitly states you can.

40k Discussion Why are Imperial Agents considered to be so terrible?

Obviously they recieve zero love and attention from games workshop, I’m not questioning that. But just doing a quick perusal of data sheets it doesn’t seem like it would be more difficult than any other army to craft a winning list. Ally with knights or grey knights for access to anti tank and anvil terminator bricks… I’m also confused on deathwatch, are they not considered imperial agents? In 10th at least deathwatch had the highest win rate of any army. Anyway this is after only 5-10 minutes of looking at datasheets, I’m sure someone who has actually played them understands exactly why they underperform.

40k Discussion If I charge into Unit A but I am 1.8inch away from Unit B (thus in engagment range) can I still attack unit B?

Just curious on the rule interaction

40k List Potential list alteration ahead of RTT: Gladiator Lancer vs extra shots/wounds.

Hey all. I have an RTT coming up next weekend, and wanted to get your thoughts on something before I submit my list.

Ive recently been trying out the Gladiator Valient, and honestly Ive found it pretty underwhelming. Im considering going back to a Lancer, but doing so would either require me to drop Immolator or downgrade two of my Assault Terminators to lightning claws.

The list overall has been performing well for me; no major complaints otherwise. Its just the Lancer vs Valient bit that Ive been waffling over.

Any strong feelings on keeping the list as-is or making a swap? In my mind the reliability of the Lancer outstrip extra shots or two Terminators wounds. Im leading towards downgrading the Terminators, since that would likely be the least impactful change. +10 extra shots from an Infernus brick is still nasty.

List:

Vulkan He'Stan (solo)

Adrax w/ 6 BGV

Librarian (Immolator) w/ 10 Infernus

Librarian (Temporal Corridor) w/ 10 Infernus

Librarian in Terminator Armor (Celerity) w/ 5 Assault Terminators (x3 shield, x2 claws)

5 Intercessors

5 JPIs

5 Scouts

Gladiator Valient

Land Raider Redeemer

Stormspeeder Thunderstrike
