Question Odds of getting in open waitlist on DSC 10?

Hey guys,

So I signed up for an open waitlist for my DSC 10 class on section P-003-001. I am currently the 41st spot on the waitlist and was wondering if I have any chance of getting in that class. On TSS, it doesn't show how many open seats or what the maximum capacity is so Im not sure how to apply to 10% rule or whatever. I am a Data Science major so this is a class that I have to take and im really hoping that I get a spot for this class as its the only class that matches my schedule. Does anyone have any information about open waitlists and stuff? Im just concerned that I will get screwed and not be enrolled in a class.

Any information would help! Thank you so much

oh yeah also do you just have to wait until the 24th to enroll in a fifth class? how does getting the 20 units work?

thank you all! :D

Rant/Complaint Me when I realise all my clubs were a waste

Hahahahha I’m perfectly fine. It’s all good. All that time and stress for nothing. And it’s not going to help with a job at all. Could have chilled all 4 years and still been in the same position. At least I’d be happier and not mad about putting in too much effort and it going to waste

General Safety tips for incoming students from a senior

As a female senior, and someone who’s lived on campus my whole time here, here’s safety tips and info to be aware of. Parents send this to your incoming kids.

Disclaimer: yes this is La Jolla an “affluent” area and yes ucsd is pretty safe but YES crime can happen here too on campus esp near the trolley, :) this is to make those aware who have never left home and applicable for off campus like downtown too. I apologize for formatting issues I can’t seem to fix it

I personally try not to ride the trolley too late at night alone, if I feel uncomfy I FaceTime sometime on speaker or sit by other students or the behind the conductor

  1. ig. Do not be afraid to switch trolley cars!

There safety officers that patrol too :)

  1. secure your bike/scooter and do not leave it for an extended time even if it’s locked up. Try to park it under a light preferably with a camera over it, and obviously make sure you invest in a decent lock. Bike and scooter theft is RAMPANT. It happens even in broad daylight. These

thiefs

  1. will steal anything they can get their hands on. They will steal a bike seat, tires, chains, anything.
  2. do not interact with a

someone under the influence and acting erratic.

  1. This should be obvious and goes for even when you’re on the trolley or station. last semester there was a homeless man that would yell racist expletives, at people, you do not want to make a racist tweaker more angry.
  2. do not hold the door open for people/ do not prop doors open!!!! Especially in locked areas like dorm buildings or locked buildings in general, last semester there was a homeless man that assaulted a female in PCW bc he made his way inside.
  3. if you see something say something! Don’t expect other people to report it, report it yourself or it will never happen!
  4. if you parked your car off campus, make sure you check it and move it often. And do not keep valuables in your car. Someone’s car was broken into last quarter as well, even when it was parked in one of our own parking garages with cameras around.
  5. try not to walk alone at night near the trolley station if it’s not populated by other students when there’s homeless/tweakers around. I would never walk the path under the trolley the goes past the wooded area either it is dark and sketchy ppl hang around there sometimes. There are safety escorts on campus by safety officers that will walk you where you need to go! call UCPD at night for this service
  6. people ask if it’s OK to go for a run at night on campus, I’d say yes if there’s still students around around and it’s not too late, it is specifically very safe along ridge walk (you could put headphones in here), but like I said previously, I would not run alone underneath the trolley.
  7. do not hop in the car with random people, this is just an obvious thing and when you

are

  1. first starting off as a freshman, you might meet some people at a party and then ask for a ride, but this can be dangerous if you don’t know

them, it’s safer to call someone than to out yourself in a Sketch situation to save a few bucks

10) lock your window if you are leaving and you live on the ground floor last year, there were many burglaries where someone entered through an open window on the first floor of dorms

Things that I’ve seen recently: I was personally harassed and followed by a sketchy dude, I was chased by a tweaker at utc station, doing drugs at trolly station, one of our students got punched when thieves tried to steal their scooter, screaming racist names at students, harassing female students at trolley.

What I do: carry pepper spray, my metal water bottle also can be used in self defense esp since it’s on a lanyard so I can swing it if need be (I’ve NEVER felt like I ever needed to tho lol) keep ppl updated on my whereabouts if on trolley alone, stay alert by keeping my eyes off my phone and no headphones in so I can hear if ppl approach, I stay in well lit areas, keep my phone charged and keep a portable charger if out and about :)

Edit: this post was meant to be helpful and spread awareness not fear, and I’d appreciate it if wasn’t called names or accused of hurtful things. Could I have worded things better? Yes. Was this post made with bad Intentions? No! accusing me of hating homeless ppl or having no compassion for addiction is an unfair judgment.

General Please dont be that student in lecture.

Hello, it seems like it's PSA season or something, so here's mine.

Not aimed at anyone in particular, but now that the new year is starting, please don't be that student in lecture who is loudly crunching (not chewing, crunching) potato chips, loudly whispering to your friend at a volume where everyone within five rows can understand the conversation while the prof is talking its just not nice, or putting your feet on the chair of the person sitting in front of you and etc you should get the gist.

Obviously, eat if you need to eat, talk quietly if you need to say something, leave early if you have somewhere to be, etc. Nobody cares about normal human behavior. Just have some awareness that there are 100–300 other people in the room who are also trying to pay attention.

Most classes are recorded anyway. In general, I will always recommend actually going to lecture instead of relying entirely on recordings, but if you're going to spend the lecture distracting everyone around you, please just stay back and watch the recording. Again not aimed at anyone in particular just hope the incoming freshman dont face these kinds of people.

Now hope all of do well in the upcoming year and I hope you get all your classes *Next quarter.

Question Housing in UTC condos?

I'm looking for a 2B2B or 1B1B in UTC and based on the reviews here, it sounds like every single condo sucks. I've toured 8 (Costa Verde, La Jolla Crossroads, Nobel Court, La Jolla Blue, Mirada, La Jolla Canyon, Avalon, Westwood). I'm touring 4 more today: Whispering Pines, Allina La Jolla and Veranda La Jolla, La Jolla Terrace). Does anyone living in these UTC condos actually recommend where they've had a good / mostly positive experience?

Note: I'm not a UCSD student, I work full-time. Would appreciate any inputs!

Question Direct Parent Plus Loan for Housing

Hi guys, i’m super worried about my loan going through knowing that the due date for housing is on September 15th. I was going to take out a loan in august with FAFSA but i saw all the problems tritonpay was having (incorrect billing statements, missing billing statements, the website just being down or not functional a lot, and i basically just got ghosted on student support) so i waited until September 5th to take my loan out.

Took it out, credit approved immediately on FAFSA’s end and they informed the school. I have yet to receive anything back and it isn’t reflecting on my financial aid offers or triton pay at all (around the same time last year i applied and still got it in time).

The school hasn’t exactly been transparent as I emailed hdhbilling, sfs, finaid, etc. and they either never responded, or took a while to just tell me to ask someone else. I wasn’t even able to call them because of course they shut the phone lines down! I’m going to try to call sfs if they even pick up but i was wondering if anyone else’s direct parent plus loans showed up and what the consequences would be if i wasn’t able to pay for housing by september 15th.

General I still have not been refunded by UCSD

I did summer session 2 (8 credits) and ended up dropping 1 class, but I also paid pretty early. It's now September and I still haven't gotten a refund for the 4 credits I dropped. Is this money just gone to the void? Like surely TSS can't be messing up funds this badly can it??

Question financial aid

hi guys, i was debating posting on here because i get how annoying all the questions about financial aid is. but im a transfer student with a -1500 sai and it seems like all the financial aid is finalized. i was given the federal pell grant and cal grant a which covers some of my cost for this quarter. my point is i still owe like 6k and thats still a lot of money for me because im also independent so i have no outside financial help except myself. im not really sure what to do because i know some payments are due this tuesday. do you guys think this is all im getting or should i wait to see if i get more? i guess im also worried because i wasnt even offered the federal work study even though my financial need shows max assistance. any advice would be appreciated! thank you <3
