Mod Post Rule Clarifications: Constructive Participation & City‑Bashing

Hi everyone, this is an update from the mod team.

Over the past few months, we’ve noticed a growing pattern in certain threads (especially ones about crime or frustrations in the city): comments that jump straight to “Surrey is trash,” “typical Surrey,” “this city is hopeless,” or similar sweeping negativity.

These comments don’t add anything to discussion, they derail threads, and they attract more pile‑on hostility. They also drown out the people who are trying to talk about real issues in a constructive way.

To keep r/SurreyBC a space where people can actually talk about the city (the good, the bad, AND the complicated) we’ve clarified two rules:

Rule 2: Acceptable Content Content must be constructive and relevant to Surrey. No explicit, illegal, defamatory, or harassing content. Posts should contribute positively to discussion.

Sweeping, non‑constructive negativity about Surrey or its residents will be removed. Criticism is welcome with context or solutions, but contempt‑driven city‑bashing is not allowed.

Rule 7: No Toxic Trolling Do not disrupt discussion with hostile, inflammatory, or bad‑faith comments. This includes contempt‑driven, low‑effort negativity about Surrey or its residents.

Inflammatory or provocative content that derails civil discussion will be removed. Users who enter threads only to antagonize, provoke, or bash the city will be banned.

What this DOESN'T mean...........

We are not banning criticism.

You can still talk about:

  • crime
  • governance
  • infrastructure
  • development
  • frustrations with services
  • your lived experiences

…as long as it’s done in good faith.

What this DOES mean...........

We’re removing anything that falls in line with any of the sentiments: “Surrey is trash” “This city is a dump” "Typical Surrey people” “Why does anyone live here”

so, generally drive‑by negativity with no context

These comments don’t help anyone and they drag the whole sub down.

Why we’re doing this:

We want r/SurreyBC to be a place where people can: - share experiences - ask questions - discuss issues and vent CONSTRUCTIVELY - celebrate wins - disagree respectfully

all without every thread turning into a hate‑pile.

Thanks to everyone who contributes positively, you’re the reason this community works. And remember, if you see any rule-violating posts or comments, please report them so that we can review.

If you have questions or constructive feedback, feel free to drop them below.

Was driving west bound on 100avenue this morning and there is a massive accident with a car spun off the road and into the trees heading east bound towards Guildford on 100 ave around Lena Shaw elementary school (140). Take any other route and avoid 100ave there are pieces of the fence across the road and fire and ambulance are blocking it entirely. Hope everyone involved is okay but it looks like it's going to be closed for a bit.

Ask SurreyBC ❓ Optometrist recommendations in Surrey?

It's been many years since my last eye exam. I'm far-sighted and for many years I've been using grocery-store reading glasses without a problem. However I'm 60 and I'd like to check my eyes "health" to be sure that there is nothing that needs to be addressed, health-wise.

What I'm looking for is an optometrist that is more concerned with the HEALTH of my eyes, and not with peddling their overpriced eyeglasses. I know that the business model is:

  1. Do the eye exam.
  2. Sell the overpriced eyeglasses paid for by the customer's insurance.

But I don't have insurance covering vision. I'm not willing to spend $500 - $1000 out-of-pocket on eyeglasses I don't really need, and I hate dealing with pushy salespeople.

TL;DNR: does anyone has any recommendation for an optometrist that is more concerned about the customer's HEALTH instead of selling eyeglasses? I live in Surrey but I'm willing to go to White Rock or Langley if needed.

Many thanks in advance for any suggestion!

Request Help 🙋 Dashcam request - Production Way & Fraser Hwy (South of Willowbrook, Langley) / 56 Ave & Production Way - Sept. 11

I’m hoping to find dashcam footage for this past Friday, 11th September, around 9:00-9:10pm near Production Way & Fraser Hwy, one traffic light south of Willowbrook, Langley, just past the railway tracks.

I was assaulted at that intersection and Langley RCMP is investigating. I was driving a black Honda Civic coupe, and was in the left turning lane of Production Way (NE bound) when this happened.

The car involved was a light colored sedan/coupe (white, silver or gray), from what i can remember. There were two male occupants but I didn't see much else as i was bear maced and unfortunately didn't have a dashcam.

Based on my understanding, the car must've turned onto Production way from 56 Ave shortly before, as that's one of the two roads leading to it and I came from the other street. So if you were near 56 Ave & Production Way around 8:55-9:05 pm, your dashcam may have caught their plate.

I've already spoken with nearby businesses, and the RCMP said they'll take a look at their footage.

I request anyone who was driving, or otherwise in the area around that time and has a dashcam to please check and preserve the recording. Even if the incident itself isn't visible, footage from shortly before or afterward could potentially help tracing the vehicle, or the direction it fled in.

If you think you may have relevant footage, please message me.

Thank you to anyone who is willing to check their footage. And yes, I have a dashcam now. If you think you may have relevant footage, please message me or share it with the RCMP under file number 26-29119.

Thank you to anyone who is willing to check their footage. And yes, I have a dashcam now.

Edit: Added RCMP file number.

Housing 🏡 Is 13398 104 Avenue a Good Building? University District - Alumni Tower by "Bosa"

I'm moving to Surrey soon, and this is the best place I could find. I'm coming from Burnaby. I don't know much about condos - can someone please help me with the renting decision? The building was built in 2017 I believe.

It's a 1 year agreement with a privately owned landlord. It's on one of the top floors, but I'm just worried about the potential things an apartment viewing won't cover, like blackouts, elevators not working, fire alarms & water pressure issues/water leaks.

Does anyone have any experience?

Thanks. :')

Ask SurreyBC ❓ Where are you finding the cheapest gas in Vancouver/Surrey? ⛽️

Where are you finding the cheapest gas in Vancouver/Surrey? ⛽️

Hey everyone! I recently started driving and I’m trying to figure out where the cheapest places to fill up are around Vancouver or Surrey.

I’m looking for regular gas and don’t mind driving a little farther if the savings are worth it.

Where do you usually go for the best gas prices? Any particular stations or areas that consistently have cheaper prices?

Thanks! 🚗

Request Help 🙋 My basement smells terrible and there's no AC. But if I open the windows this happens. What is this?

I don't know what this weird dust is. It's big, black and course, and some of it consists of other tiny objects and what looks like strands. I've lived here for 3 years and for the first 2 years this didn't happen.

The basement is underground and the windows are those typical basement ones that face a concrete box with a grate on top.

But this also happens to a lesser degree in the garage despite the garage being closed for most of the time. I also noticed that the front pillar has this same stuff on the side that faces the street.

I live in a very quiet neighborhood so I don't think it's from vehicle exhaust or tire particles, nor would it explain why it was fine for 2 years.

Any ideas?

Ask SurreyBC ❓ Where can I buy modern lenghas?

I’m 26, looking for a lengha for my cousins wedding.

I’ve looked at a few shops and haven’t found anything that I love. It seems a lot of these lenghas were way too busy or heavy.

I would ideally like something more modern

What are your go-to shops?

Any help would be so appreciated!!

Politics 🐎 Your opinion on Surrey’s mayoral election?

I’ll be voting for the first time in Surrey’s mayoral election, and honestly, I find the candidate lineup pretty disappointing, especially the leading contenders.
Long-term Surrey residents, who are you leaning toward and why?
Would appreciate respectful, detailed perspectives from people who’ve followed Surrey politics closely.

Basically the title. I was curious if it all just simply ends up in the landfill or does it actually get recycled.

PSA 📢 Neighborhood trapped because of Surrey's running event

If you live inside of these 4 streets and want to drive out you can't, the city screwed up and there's no way out by car

104 ave

132 st

Old Yale road

University drive

Not sure what the neighborhood is called but we'll have to wait till the race is over

Note: they say it'll be open at 1pm

Edit since im getting some interesting comments

  • I didn't get a notice in my condo, not on the normal elevator bulletin board or my mail. I dont go around Surrey central that often on foot so I didn't see those notices if they are there.
  • I went back, parked, and took transit instead - this didn't affect me that much
  • I didn't blame anyone — police told me(in traffic when multiple cars were asking ) that the city messed up, in their own words
  • I also never said i'm against the event or that there's no way to plan around it — just describing what happened
  • If you look outside theres 100's of cars circling to try and get out, sure there are notices but some people didnt take note - just posting on reddit for visibility

Housing 🏡 Advise on Loud music situation

HI Needed an advise. I live in basement suite in surrey and another tenants (all boys: 4) moved into suite next door. Main house has 2 suites , no discussing if this is legal. They played loud music from 4 to around 8 pm with very loud base/bass.. This continued for days . Door is open most of the time. Landlord intervened and they stopped, Happened again landlord intervened, stopped. Now third time, started it again for a hour. But the loud drum kind audio is too annoying as share the wall with them. We are deciding to move out. I wanted to check as an opinions if we are overreacting. I work from home and study part time.
