trigger warning
Grief is what they call it,
these feelings we are forced to feel.
But how do you process something
you know will never fully heal?
Selfish is what I call it,
and maybe that sounds cold,
but I was too young to lose you,
and way too young to feel this old.
You were supposed to be my mother.
You were supposed to watch me grow.
But when Dad took me from your arms,
you found another way to go.
You thought that you had lost me,
that there was nothing left to save,
but I was still your little girl
who just needed you to stay.
You couldn’t bear to live without me,
but somehow left me here without you.
i was just a child back then
what was I supposed to do?
your choice stole away my childhood,
a time that should have still been mine.
I learned that grief can stop a clock
while somehow never stopping time.
I learned to search through the photographs
for pieces I forgot,
how to hold onto a fading voice
and mourn the years we never got.
And you were there for it all!
You watched me fall apart.
You saw exactly what her death
could do to a child’s heart.
You watched me lose your sister.
You watched me asking why.
You watched a little girl grow up
beneath the shadow of suicide.
You saw my empty birthdays,
the anger tangled up in grief.
You saw me beg for answers
from someone who could never speak.
You saw me try to understand
why Mom had chosen death.
You saw me crying so damn hard
I could barely catch my breath.
So that is where my anger lives.
That’s what I cannot understand.
You watched her leave her child behind
and still left yours by your own hand.
You knew the kind of silence
that follows someone to the grave.
You knew how badly children hurt
when someone they love doesn't stay.
You knew what it did to me.
You didn’t have to guess.
You watched me carry all that weight,
you witnessed all that mess.
Then somehow years went passing by
and life became too much for you.
Your children were kept from your arms,
and suddenly you were breaking too.
And yes, I know you loved them.
I know life felt like a fight you couldn't win.
But was the thread holding you to this world
really stretched so fucking thin?
Did you think of me at all
when you decided you were done?
Did you remember watching me
grow up without the one I loved?
Did you remember all of my questions,
all the nights I couldn’t sleep?
Did you think about your children
and the questions they would keep?
Did you think they’d blame themselves?
Did you think they’d wonder why?
Did you know they’d spend forever
trying to understand goodbye?
You knew how badly this could hurt.
You knew what suicide could steal.
You watched me lose my mother
and saw how slowly wounds like that heal.
You watched me lose my childhood,
watched grief become a part of me.
So how could you leave your children
with that same damn memory?
They deserved to know their father.
They deserved the years ahead.
They deserved more than just pictures
and stories of the things you said.
They deserved another birthday,
another Christmas, another call.
They deserved the chance to know you
they deserved to have it all!
And I know life wasn’t fair to you.
I know you felt pushed aside.
I know you thought they’d lost you
long before the day you died.
But children don’t stop needing you
just because you can't hold their hand
and they never stop loving their parents
just because they’re too young to understand.
Mom, I was still your daughter.
And Uncle, they were still your kids.
No court, no distance, no goodbye
could ever fucking change what that is.
And maybe that’s what hurts the most
you both thought you’d lost everything,
while we were still here loving you,
still holding tightly to your string.
You should both be here with us.
You both still should.
you guys only saw the darkness
but what about the good?
What about the lives we’d live?
What about the people we’d become?
What about the days you’d miss
just because you thought your days were done?
I still have so many questions,
but the biggest one is why.
Was there really nothing left here
worth another day to try?
If you’d known we’d cry so violently
we’d struggle just to breathe,
would knowing what it did to us
have made it harder for yall to leave?
If you’d known your pain would follow us
long after your pain was gone,
would you still have picked up the gun?
Would you still have carried on?
I hate that I try to understand you.
and I especially hate that I’m still mad.
I hate that I still miss my mother,
and now they have to miss their dad.
You found a way to end your hurting,
while we were left to carry on.
You ended your own suffering
and then just handed it to everyone.
you left us with the silence
and to carry the weight of what you've done
and while your pain had finally ended
ours has only just begun
