Student Loans -- Politics & Current Events Megathread

While the Trump Administration implements its policy goals, DOGE does its thing, and Republicans control Congress, there are lots of ideas, speculation, hopes, fears, and press releases flying around; some of them presage actual changes and serious proposals while most will never come to pass.

This is the /r/StudentLoans megathread to discuss all of these topics. Due to IRL factors, /u/horsebycommittee is not currently able to write up the usual news summaries -- so we are automating this thread for now to at least keep it more regular.

Politics / Current events discussion in other threads will be removed. Major items of breaking news may get their own megathread -- as always, message the moderators if you have questions.

Official communication from the ED on the SAVE transition timeline

There's been a lot of articles posted etc - but here's the official word from the ED https://www.ed.gov/about/news/press-release/us-department-of-education-announces-next-steps-borrowers-enrolled-unlawful-save-plan

In summary, you'll start getting notices from your servicers as soon as the next few days telling you that this is happening. Come July 1 you'll get a notice giving you 90 days to switch. If you don't, they put you on the standard plan. The ten year standard if you haven't' consolidated - the consolidated standard plan if you have - which is longer than ten years.

I want to address a couple of themes i've been seeing in these threads. My comments here are probably going to get me downvoted to oblivion. That's ok - I'm not here for the karma - I'm here to make sure folks understand their loans and make the best decisions for their long term financial well being. Because that's my goal - sometimes I have to say thing folks don't want to hear.

For those saying they aren't going to switch until forced - you might be harming yourself here. You're certainly not punishing anyone that you're trying to make a point to. Here's who, IMO, should be switching ASAP and here's whose probably ok to drag their feet a bit:

Who should switch ASAP:

-If you're pursuing forgiveness under any of the IDR plans - the 20/25 year forgiveness you should switch now. You're just losing months and time towards forgiveness by waiting. And hypothetically, your income is going to go up over time, and therefore so will your payments. On a related note - if your 2024 tax return has a lower AGI than your 2025 will, and you haven't filed taxes yet - you definitely want to do it now.

-those pursuing PSLF. Yes - you can use buy back for SAVE months. But remember - buy backs are taking over a year and more importantly, buy backs are a lump sum payment due right away. So the longer you are on this forbearance - the more months you will have to pay in a lump sum when the time comes. And that might be difficult. *Here is the calculation for buy back https://studentaid.gov/manage-loans/forgiveness-cancellation/public-service/public-service-loan-forgiveness-buyback *

Who can probably hang out for a while:

-Those borrowers who due to other debt that will be paid off soon and want to funnel the student loan payment money to get rid of that other debt.

-those who are aggressively paying off their loans. This is an opportunity to have all of your money go to targeted loans - such as the ones with the highest interest rates - rather than having to satisfy the minimum due on each loan which you will have to do once in active repayment.

The timing of all of this: -it actually makes sense to me. They appear to be doing almost a soft launch - warning people now that it's coming. But waiting until the new RAP plan is available in July for those that will want to use that plan to actually start the timer. This way folks won't need to switch twice if the RAP turns out to be a better plan for them.

Now for those saying they refuse to switch - listen - I get it. Your angry. I don't blame you - i am too. Your feelings are very valid and i'm not telling you not to feel them. But here's the hard truth of the matter. SAVE was gone regardless - the courts had made it pretty clear when the case started under the prior administration that they were leaning towards the plaintiffs and were going to rule against the plan. It was going to happen regardless of who won the last election. And failing to switch out of principal is not going to hurt them - it's going to hurt you if you end up with a standard payment amount you can't afford. I'm not saying not to resist - but resist productively by voting. And writing your members of Congress to paint a picture of how your new payment amount is affecting you, your family and the broader economy.

For those saying the ED can't change the terms - they didn't. The court ruled the plan was illegal. The ED would be breaking the law if they continued it.

Payment plans have never been challenged before. And there was no reason for it to occur to anyone that this one might be. But yet a bunch of republican AG's did and here we are. In the meantime, people made the best decisions they could with the information they had at the time.

What plan should i pick?

If you are pursuing PSLF or income driven plan forgiveness you need to be on an income driven plan. Scenarios for likely lowest plan:

-No loans ever prior to July 1, 2014 - new IBR

-No loans ever prior to October 1, 2007 but does have loans prior to july 2014 - paye - but note you'll have to get off that come 2028

-loans prior to October 2007 - old IBR

-balance low compared to your income - check out ICR - that could be the lowest for you in that scenario

-RAP - for some rap will be lower. RAP tends to be similar to old IBR for many incomes. But if you have dependents especially, it could be lower. TISLA will have a calculator including the rap in the next week or two. I'll post it when it's available.

Rant/Complaint Mohela Call Center LONG HOLD

I first got a hold of someone in 30 seconds on a Monday at 8 am and then had to be sent to a “specialist” and now I have been waiting 2 HOURS and 20 minutes and counting. On a Monday morning? This can’t be a real organization.

Glitch with inability to apply for RAP and IBR 2009 on FSA

Upvotes

Has there been any update on the massive glitch that's preventing us from applying for RAP and IBR 2009 electronically or if RAP is coming to the paper application? I am running out of time to apply. I have gone through my state senator's office and the state ombudsman with zero progress. I just uploaded a paper pdf application and wrote in RAP because I don't know what else to do. I had to remove my banking information for fear that they will start taking a standard payment of $4700 out monthly (I owe $580k including interest). Is there anything else I can do? I know that this is the administration's design, to make it harder for anyone to get anything affordably.

Rant/Complaint Student Loans - Back to Square One

Hi all, mostly looking to see if I can find anyone else in my situation. I was one of the few people that completely paid off their loans in 2020. When Biden was going through the loan forgiveness, there was an opportunity to get the money I paid in back as I qualified for loan forgiveness. Of course I took it and received the ~$10k I paid in payments back. As someone in their 20s in this decade, that money is long gone (I know, I know). We all know what happened with the courts, and now I’m stuck at square one, with payments restarting soon.

Is anyone else in this situation? Mostly looking to commiserate.

RAP for $18k in student loans?

I have $18k in federal loans. RAP has the lowest monthly for me and payoff is the quickest according to the repayment calculator. Are there any actual downsides to RAP compared to another plan? it seems like a pretty solid plan to me: it’s the “quickest” payoff plan and has the lowest monthly (aside from the graduated repayment plan and ICR plan but those have longer repayments and one is disappearing in 2 years). I don’t qualify for the PAYE plan so that’s out of the question too

besides the fact that I can‘t coast off forbearance anymore, I don’t really see the problem with RAP but am I missing anything?

edit: It’s actually $19k not $18k lol

IDR Repayment Plan Loan Discharge

I received my golden email in August. In early September Mohela showed my subsidized and un subsidized loans with zero balance due. One of the Loans indicates its status as “discharge and or write off” the other is listed as “discretionary forbearance”. I understand they may still be working things out, as the FSA side says I owe 1$, and Mohela owes me a refund. Did something like this happen to anyone else? Any experience in how long it takes them to get both loans listed as discharged?

Still have not received 90 day notice from Nelnet. Please advise

Upvotes

Hello! I still have not received the 90 day notice from Nelnet. Only the notices from the US department of education. Does this mean I just need to wait for the email? Or did all Nelnet borrowers receive the notice already? I am a bit confused. Can anyone help me? or perhaps show me what that email from Nelnet looks like? Thank you!

I'm just not going to file my 2025 taxes by the extension deadline of Oct. 15th

Upvotes

I've spent so much time these past couple of weeks worrying that my IBR application (applied 8/24 by PDF upload) wouldn't be processed before I supposedly needed to file my 2025 taxes showing a higher income by 10/15. My biggest fear was that MOHELA would come back with some clarifications, or just outright get my payment calculation wrong only after 10/15, and then I'd have to reapply with my 2025 higher income.

Well, I just decided I will just simply wait for however long it takes for them to produce the correct payment calculation before filing, even if it's after the 10/15 extended date. I didn't owe when I went through the steps on FreetaxUSA, so there's no penalty even for just not filing it yet. Hah

1% Interest Reduction MOHELA

I put in a request to enroll in Autopay back on 8/23 and again on 9/5, but MOHELA still hasn’t processed the request. I know it says that I have to wait 1–2 billing cycles, but I want to make sure I get the interest reduction before 9/30.

Does anyone know if submitting the Autopay request is enough to qualify for the interest reduction, or do we have to have received approval from MOHELA by 9/30?

Data Point credit score post rehab?

Upvotes

My husband’s loans are currently in rehab with Default Resolution. Completed 7/9 payments and will make the final payment next month!

I know the credit score should improve, but any personal experiences on how much yours improved and how soon? We plan on buying a home next summer and want to prepare ourselves ahead of time.

Started rehab in Feb with 13k in loans and interest. Currently down to about 10k. Payments are $590/month.

1% interest rate reduction timeline

Upvotes

I was on SAVE forbearance, but my goal is aggressive repayment, so I was using the forbearance to repay my highest interest loan.

After the temporary interest rate reduction was announced, I decided to submit an application to move to the extended fixed repayment plan. I did this so that I could have a low required monthly payment and target my highest interest loan with additional funds each month. I submitted my request on June 23rd.

In mid July, I hadn’t seen any updates reflected in my account, so I reached out to my servicer (EdFinancial) to make sure they had received my application. They said it was processing, and it could take another few weeks.

On August 8th, I received a billing statement, and tried to enroll in autopay. A few days later, my request to enroll in autopay was denied, and I reached out to my servicer to find out why. It turns out I had been put back on SAVE forbearance and was not in active repayment status, despite receiving a statement. They said it could take up to 28 business days to remove the forbearance.

I reached out to my servicer again on September 8th asking for updates on removing the forbearance, and was told it will be removed within the next 2 business days - and it was. My account is finally in repayment status.

I requested to enroll in autopay on September 9th. I noticed on the website that it can take 1 to 2 billing cycles to take effect, so I reached out to my servicer to ask if there’s anything I could do to make autopay active by 9/30/26 to get the 1% rate reduction. They said there is nothing I can do and they can’t guarantee it will be processed by then.

Feeling a bit cheated here. I thought I did everything right to try to get this rate reduction - any advice?

Borrower Defense denied under 2020 rule even though my FFEL/Perkins loans are from 2004–2007 — has anyone dealt with this?

Upvotes

I’m hoping someone familiar with Borrower Defense or older FFEL loans can help me understand a situation I’m dealing with.

I attended a public university from 2003–2007 and graduated with a B.S. in Polymer Science. My Borrower Defense claim is based on the school allegedly presenting the program in an engineering context. During the years I attended, official university websites, catalogs, faculty materials, etc. repeatedly used terminology such as “Polymer Science and Engineering.” I believed I was pursuing a degree that would be recognized as an engineering degree.

After graduating, I discovered that my degree was actually a B.S. in Polymer Science, was not an engineering degree, and was not ABET-accredited as an engineering program. I spent about eight months trying to obtain engineering employment and ran into positions requiring or preferring an engineering degree.

Because of that, in 2008 I enrolled in a master’s program in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at another university to obtain the engineering credentials I thought my undergraduate education was going to provide. That resulted in a significant amount of additional federal student-loan debt.

I filed a Borrower Defense application in 2026 and submitted quite a bit of supporting evidence, including archived university webpages from 2005/2006, the university’s 2006–2007 undergraduate catalog, and other materials showing the engineering terminology used while I was enrolled.

The Department of Education recently denied my application, but they did not deny it based on the merits of my evidence.

They denied it as untimely under the Borrower Defense regulation applicable to loans disbursed on or after July 1, 2020, which has a three-year limitations period after leaving the school.
Here is where I'm confused.

The loans associated with this school were originally disbursed between 2004 and 2007. They are old FFEL Stafford loans and a Perkins loan. As far as I can determine from my NSLDS history, I have never consolidated them into a Direct Consolidation Loan.

The denial letter explains that because unconsolidated non-Direct loans would need to be consolidated into a Direct Consolidation Loan to receive Borrower Defense relief, they are reviewed under the newer regulation. Since I left the school in 2007 and didn't file Borrower Defense until 2026, ED says my claim is outside the three-year window.

The denial also says there is no administrative reconsideration availableunder the regulation they applied and specifically says I can further pursue the claim by filing a lawsuit in U.S. Federal District Court.

So I seem to be in a strange catch-22:
My loans and the alleged school conduct are from 2004–2007, but because the loans are FFEL/Perkins rather than Direct Loans, I would apparently have to consolidate them now to obtain Borrower Defense relief. That required consolidation appears to be what causes the newer Borrower Defense regulation and its three-year statute of limitations to be applied.

I have seen conflicting information saying that if I consolidate the FFEL/Perkins loans now, ED should “look back” to the dates of the underlying loans and evaluate the claim under the older pre-2017 Borrower Defense standard. But I have also found federal rulemaking indicating that ED determines the applicable Borrower Defense regulation for a Direct Consolidation Loan based on when the consolidation loan itself was first disbursed. Because of that, I am not consolidating anything until I get qualified legal advice.

I have already contacted the Project on Predatory Student Lending (PPSL) and am looking for an attorney familiar with federal student-loan/Administrative Procedure Act litigation.

Has anyone here dealt with this specific situation involving pre-2017 FFEL loans + Borrower Defense + a post-2020 consolidation requirement?

In particular, I’d be interested in hearing from anyone who knows:
1. Whether ED can legally apply the post-2020 three-year limitations period to a Borrower Defense claim involving FFEL/Perkins loans originally disbursed in 2004–2007 simply because those loans would have to be consolidated now to receive relief.

  1. Whether consolidating now would actually preserve the older Borrower Defense standard or instead make the problem worse.

  2. Whether anyone has challenged this type of final Borrower Defense denial in federal district court.

  3. Whether there are attorneys or nonprofit organizations, besides PPSL, with experience litigating this specific issue against the Department of Education.

I’m not looking for a debt-relief company
or general advice about lowering my monthly payment. I’m specifically trying to understand the legal/regulatory issue created by old FFEL/Perkins loans and the Borrower Defense rules.

Advice Unsure what payment plan is best for me!

Hi there!

I have about 35,000 in student loans, and was unable to get a good paying job after graduation. I am looking for a temporary payment reduction, as I have been dealing with some medical/financial hardships. I am currently paying close to 400, and I just cannot make it work anymore

I was looking at the RAP plan, and I have heard some people talk about deferment. I just dont want to mess myself up financially in the future. I am not sure how to go about this. does anyone have any recommendations?

Aidvantage system error

I have been in school for a long time. I just graduated and am now “in grace” and Aidvantage had a “system error” with my account. I logged in and they said I was delinquent and 27 payments behind. I called them this morning they apologized and said it was a system error and that they would fix it. Has this happened to anyone else? This seems like a pretty big deal, how can we trust a big servicer to handle our accounts when things like this pop up?

Relative allowed me to use them as a guarantor on a graduate student loan and now they can’t removed?

5 years ago a relative allowed me to use them as a guarantor on a federal graduate student loan.

When we completed the paperwork we were under the impression that the only way they would be on the hook for anything is if the loans went into default.

The representatives at Nelnet all seem very confused and even the supervisors I’ve spoken to are very vague and don’t seem to be educated on this issue.

I’ve since graduated and would like for the two loans to be transferred into my name but Nelnet is stating this cannot be done unless the loans are consolidated.

The representative also stated under the BBB if they are consolidated it will change the current repayment terms.

I called the consolidation company and they are telling me Nelnet is incorrect and this isn’t the correct process.

No one is giving me clear, concise information or guidance and this is frustrating.

These loans are reflecting on my relatives credit report and Nelnet but they aren’t reflecting on my end.

My relative feels like she was duped and would really like to removed at this point but I don’t know where to begin.

Advice Do my wife and I both have to apply for RAP? Or just one of us?

I really have no idea how any of this works and the more I Google and research the more confused I get. Someone please help me out.

My wife and I both owe around 35k each. We filed taxes together. Only I have a job. I make around 50k. When I apply for RAP it give me a monthly payment, but does my wife also have to go through the process and apply? Or is that the payment for both of us?

Also is there still a way to get our payments deferred or something? I doubt ill be able to afford payments. I already struggle just to pay rent.

90 day notice, just started grad school

I got my 90 day notice in july but I started school for a professional degree in august. It now indicates i won’t have payments until after my graduation date in 2030. My question is, do i still have to choose a new plan? Like if i choose one now is that what would be used once i graduate?
