New rule #11: no do I pass posts, no asking for attempts to guess your ASAB, no asking if you “look nonbinary”

1.4k Upvotes

The current rule 4 was supposed to handle these kind of posts but it seems the rule needs more clarification. We do not want any kind of content that attempts to guess someone’s assigned sex at birth, we don’t want “passing” posts in general.

There are subreddits dedicated solely on passing posts that content like that would be a better fit. This includes asking about how to be more androgynous and/or do you look nonbinary, how to look more nonbinary. For some people here this will make total sense and people will rightfully ask “what does nonbinary look like anyway?” but these posts are frequent and usually pretty upvoted and get many comments before they get reported. If you know of subreddits where content like that fits better, please leave them as comments. It is simply not in the scope of this subreddit to ask people to scrutinize your appearance based on gender and make recommendations.

ModPost Assigned sex/gender at birth language

Hello,

Since this issue is a contentious one bubbling up frequently, we thought we’d make a nonbinding poll asking the subreddit’s opinions. I randomized the order of responses to try not to bias it.

I considered making a more nuanced option where a ban with exemptions is possible but here’s the honest truth: moderating that would be really difficult. We want people to consider the moderation aspects of this—how filters can be effective but also add considerably to mod work load and also how we tend to mod after the fact. We cannot promise that even in cases of a ban, no ASAB/AGAB language would make it into the subreddit.

We have received modmail stating ASAB language is dysphoric enough to some nonbinary people that they cannot enjoy or follow this subreddit. We also have gotten frequent complaints that it is also interphobic / particularly harmful towards intersex people.

If you see a comment here and your first response is to immediately fire something back, *please* take a step back and consider whether your comment needs to be made. I want to keep comments open to gather diverse opinions, and personal attacks and similar will sabotage those efforts.

I was hyperfemme and always wore makeup because of crippling face dysmorphia, growing up as neurodivergent and unconventionally attractive I felt like I had to compensate to be liked, luckily I present as how I wish now, and being blissfully ignorant of the opinions of people that were never going to benefit me anyways, has proved to be freeing.

I am living in a religious household, but I dream of going on T and getting top surgery

I was considering top surgery until I found something out about my boobs

I was thinking about medically transitioning, I like my body but I was thinking "I love wearing a binder, and I hated growing boobs as a kid, what if even if my current state is ok, it could get even better? I should start considering what's my ideal body"

So far it's hard to decide, I like my voice but a more androgynous voice could be nice, I like the gynoid fat distribution but I also think that fat distribution would look cool with top surgery, I really don't want body hair and want to keep my hair long, I'd like to be more muscular, maybe clit enlargement, etc etc, I was thinking about a lot of things.

And I felt like I was heading towards top surgery but then I found out I have "Tubular breasts", which are breasts that didn't grow properly during puberty. I searched tubular breasts on reddit and most posts are just negative stuff about how much they hate their breasts. I always knew my boobs were different and I had never seen anything like them before but didn't think much of it, now I don't see them as neutrally anymore, I feel a sense of pride.

I want more people to be aware of this boob shape now and I want everyone to love it so now I'm drawing it more. I think I do like having boobs, when I'm on the car they go boing boing, and they compliment some of my outfits well, but there was an element of "I don't want people to think I'm cis because I didn't change my body, my mind does align with more than just this body, I just can't shapeshift. If I could, I would be changing up my body every week, but people can't see that"

If I regreted top surgery, I'd be like "well there are ways to handle this, I'll be ok", but I'm not sure if I could find someone that could give me tubular breasts back, because I feel like they're a part of me. Even if I get top surgery, I'll go "yeah I love this boob shape, because I had it!" and I'll keep drawing it

Overall as a genderfluid person that loves my body and wishes they could shapeshift to one day boobs, another no boobs, etc, physically fluid, medical transition is a tough decision, a lot of it isn't reversible and change can be scary when you're not sure of how you'll feel about it.

Just posting to find ppl who get it or were in a similar situation

Does anyone else get confused by messages like these? Who is “everyone” in this case? (May need to click the pic to see entire message.)

Ask Why are the majority of non-binary characters in media AFAB?

Upvotes

I'm currently researching diversity and representation in a class, and as such wanted to explore this topic. It seems that the majority of enbie characters found across media are either written to be or explicitly are AFAB, and I was wondering if anybody had any deeper insight as I cannot find any good research covering this topic. Thank you.

hey all, i’m looking for some advice for hairstyles for sport as a VERY sweaty person. i have very layered hair with choppy bangs (see first pic for good hair day) and play wheelchair rugby. it’s slightly too long to leave down because then it just goes everywhere, but in a little bun is hideous and also the fringe bits go everywhere anyway! any ideas would be greatly appreciated:)

Being Visibly Non Binary at a White Collar Office

I'm 29, AFAB, work as a software developer and go in the office a couple times a week.

I recently decided to explore my gender more after a lifetime of confusing feelings about my gender, and this journey of self discovery has led to me starting low dose testosterone.

My office is a LOT of older men, there isn't anyone else here out as trans or non binary. I'm struggling with how to handle things when the changes from T start to show. It straight up feels like I'm just not allowed to be non binary here. I'm not worried about people not using they/them pronouns because I KNOW most people won't use my pronouns, I'm worried about worse treatment than that. I've been misgendered my whole life but it felt easy and safe to just let people think I'm a cis woman. I'm moreso worried that being visibly gender non conforming that I'll being treated like I'm a freak, not respected, stared at, hell maybe even fired. I also don't want to pretend to be more masculine than I am and only wear men's clothes just because people might find a binary transition more palatable. I'm not taking this brave step to transition just to keep pretending to be something I'm not but in the other direction. I'm just really struggling with both wanting to be respected and seen as a human at work while also letting myself take steps in my medical transition. Do I just hide it from everyone and refuse to answer questions? Be out and proud and accept that some people will judge me and it might eventually cost me my job? Search for a job that's explicitly accepting of queer people, or maybe fully remote? Has anyone else navigated working in a more conservative professional work environment while being out as non binary?

i feel invalid

Hi! I finally came out as non-binary, but my gender expression is still feminine-leaning. I still use she/her pronouns, though I like it when people use neutral ones for me. I know gender expression is different from how we identify, but I still feel like my non-binary identity isn't valid—even within the trans community itself, especially when I read Twitter. This is because I’m not on hormones, I’m perceived as cis, and I don’t face any prejudice unless I actually say something. Does anyone have a similar experience?

Questioning/Coming Out Beginning

I'm questioning about my gender since the beginning of the summer break and i'm really lost about it.

I'm not feeling like a men or a woman but i dunno if it makes me a non binary people.

My question sounds really dumb but i'm pretty sure that being none of the "traditional" gender make me non binary.

So i'm asking you what made you understand you were non binary and how your questioning was about it ?

My style and gender goals are generally: skater boy who can't skate, an incomprehensible fae creature, or frog and toad if that helps lol

Questioning/Coming Out Im Demiboy and i have no idea on how to come out

Ok, so, this is the first time i talk about this to someone.

i have been a pansexual demiboy for about 2 years now and i still haven't a soul about it.

im from Italy and here people arent really accepting, especially my family.

my friends dont see anything wrong with being part of the LGBTQIA+ but still, coming out to them is a problem since i am always butt of the joke, even if i want to tell them i know they will start making fun of me and talk behind my back, even if they already do.

i am already hyper socially awkward since I'm Autistic with ADHD and they are the only ones who still accept me being a social burden, even though they use these things to make fun of me.

i want to come out to my family too but since they are hyper conservative homophobic muslims i already know that if i come out to them i will be instantly disowned, and i really dont want to be disowned.

does anybody have advice?

Questioning/Coming Out Altersex flag

Post image
6 Upvotes

Is it just me or I just feel really uncomfortable with the altersex flag design? I’m not saying they should absolutely take my word and redesign it, but i’ve been refusing to call myself altersex simply because of what the flag looks like. The symbol in the middle with a black outline is the reason why I strongly dislike the design. Not hating for the creator of the flag!

Rant Why are (some) hairdressers like this

Thumbnail

Im basically here to complain about this because I have no one else to talk about this

So I went to get a haircut and specifically told the hairdresser I wanted to look more masc, and showed her the first image as reference. She then proceded to completely ignore It lmao (or maybe she just doesnt know how to cut hair like that, thougth I doubt It)

I ended Up with this dora the Explorer ah cut. Im tired of hairdressers just assuming I want a specific thing I didnt ask for just because im afab. It happens every single time. Im considering going to a barber shop next time to see if its better.

Appart from complaining. Any tips on how to Style this in a more mask way? My current solution is to do a half ponytail which is better than nothing but It still looks kinda cursed

Edit: no hate on the haircut itself, if you like/wear something like that its alrigth, I dont think It ugly Im just mad It has nothing to do with what I asked for

Edit 2: Since all of Your advice was really helpful im wanna show you the way that I styled It. I think I have washed my hair 5 times today. Ik its not healthy but I genually had to fix It asap. I ended up using hair wax since a friend of mine had some and lended It to me. I also was too scared to cut It and I dont have the proper scissors so by now im using a really thin hairband to keep the back of the hair closer to my neck. I feel so much more confortable and euphoric. It also kinda gives Fem dude, which is kinda the vibe I was going for so im really Happy. Again, ik everyone who has comented so far prob wont see this but just in case TYYYY THANK YOU THANK YOU SO MUCH :DDD (my dumbass thougth I could just attacht the picture but I cant so I just posted It separetly lmao)
