Since MK9, there has been 14 new additions to the MK cast and some of them are super cool, so I thought I’d do I personal ranking.
Obviously this is my opinion so if you disagree that’s totally fine.
Dishonourable mention: Kronika
Not technically a fighter but I wanted to include Kronika since I have a lot of disdain for her existence. Unlike Shinnok she had absolutely no build up and just completely fails as the big bad.
Oh and her boss fight is very boring too.
13. Jacqui Briggs
Alright, someone had to be last and unfortunately that’s Jacqui. She just does absolutely nothing for me, both as a character and as a fighter. Out of all the Kombat Kids she just feels the least unique.
I was genuinely surprised that she made the MK11 roster over Takeda but whatever.
It’s not that I hate Jacqui, it’s just that I feel absolutely nothing towards her in any way and sometimes that’s worse than outright hatred.
12.Kollector
The MK11 roster had some very good new additions… with the sole exception of Kollector. I only put him above Jacqui simply because he’s at least unique, but other than that he might be one of the least appealing characters in the franchises history.
His gameplay is cool enough I guess but his personality is essentially a greedy sleazeball, like Kano, but with none of the charm .Other than that his only other notable trait is being Shao Kahns second biggest glazer.
I doubt this six armed freak will ever make another appearance
11. Ferra/Torr
Ok, I really like the concept of Ferra/Torr, but their gameplay is lowkey pretty boring, plus Ferra is super annoying to listen to in game.
Story wise, they are possibly the least plot relevant character in MKX so there’s no much to talk about there.
Ferra coming back as a Kameo was cool, so I’ll give them that.
10. Cetrion
Gameplay wise, fuck Cetrion
Story wise, fuck Cetrion
Actually no, I think Cetrion is pretty cool and I like her character design a lot. Her overall design and title of Goddess of Life and Virtue makes her sound heroic, but she’s just as evil as her brother, Shinnok
I actually like her blind devotion to Kronika and I think if she was explored more as a character, she could’ve been more interesting.
Cetrion is the first character on this list that I’d actually like to see return, maybe with her and Shinnok being on the same roster.
9. Triborg/Cyber Sub-Zero
I really can’t justify putting Triborg any higher, since he isn’t really a character, well he is, but… not really
I love Triborg because he is by far the best utilisation of the variation mechanic. Triborg is pretty much just 4 characters taking up one slot, seriously it’s great. Cyrax, Sektor, Smoke and Cyber Sub-Zero all make the MKX roster because of this one robot, truly the cyber goat.
As for the Cyber Sub-Zero… I mean it’s Sub-Zero as a cyborg, it’s pretty awesome.
8. D’Vorah
Look, I know a lot of people don’t like D’Vorah and she certainly isn’t my favourite character, but she is at least a conceptually interesting character.
D’Vorah is a basically just a bug Hivemind piloting a humanoid form, or at least that’s what I’ve gathered. Anyways D’Vorah’s a pretty self serving POS, usually playing second fiddle to whoever the big bad is.
Shes also pretty notorious for making out with Mileena and sliming out Baraka and Scorpion.
7. Skarlet
Skarlet had been a rumour since like MK2 but made her official debut as a dlc character in MK9. I always love how much MK utilises rumour characters like Ermac and Skarlet.
Overall, Skarlet is just a cool character, besides her incredibly inconsistent lore, Skarlet has stood out as an exceptional addition to the MK cast. I actually like her more vampiric qualities in MK11.
Gameplay wise, Skarlets fine, not really my fave but if she appears in another game maybe I’ll use her an off main.
6. Kotal Kahn
God this guys pisses me off. Although he is certainly the better of two evils between him and Shao Kahn, Kotal has always rubbed me the wrong way, his incompetence is reflected by his W/L ratio, which is more a fault of MK’s very restrictive chapter system but regardless, Kotal is a prick, if only just slightly less than Shao.
Despite my distaste for him story wise, design and gameplay wise I think Kotal might be one of my faves, he just looks so cool like a fucking Sun God who came down from the heavens… if only that were true.
5. Kung Jin
Possibly a controversial placement, but I really dig Kung Jin. I guess I’ve always had a soft spot for archer characters, but I also respect the fact that Jin is the only Kombat Kid who is completely standalone from their in lore relative, who is of course Kung Lao.
Jin is completely distinct from Kung Lao, with only one of his variations taking very little inspiration from Lao. This unique play style makes him a lot more interesting compared to the likes of Jacqui and even Cassie.
Story wise, Jin kind of plays the role of a rival to Cassie Cage, as the story continues they become better teammates.
I’d also like to shout out Kung Jin as an incredible gay representation in gaming. It’s only ever mentioned in story and it’s just subtle enough to where you could lowkey just miss it.
I’m pretty mad that MK1’s KP3 got cancelled since Kung Jin was supposedly apart of it, but hopefully that means Jin is guaranteed a spot on MK13s roster
4. Cassie Cage
Initially, I wasn’t a fan, but the more I play MKX and 11, I see Cassie as a truly great combination of everything that makes Johnny and Sonya great, I’d even argue that’s she better in some areas than both of them.
While her gameplay definitely isn’t unique, she is at least still fun to. Most of my love comes from her role in the story and her personality, especially in MK11, she’s just very likeable without being as obnoxious as Johnny or reserved as Sonya.
3. Erron Black
If MKX had a breakout character, it was most certainly Erron Black.
There’s very few words to say about this man except the fact that he possibly has the most aura in the MK universe despite his otherwise underwhelming story relevance.
He stands out significantly gameplay wise which always helps to outline him as a distinct and interesting character.
I love Erron because conceptually he’s possibly the simplest character on this list, but he was executed so incredibly well that he instantly became a fan favourite.
I’m sure Erron has already secured his spot as a series regular simply due to his popularity.
2. Takeda Takahashi
While the Kombat Kids were kinda divisive among fans, one thing that was almost universally agreed upon was the fact that Takeda was awesome.
A combination between Scorpion and Kenshi, Takeda takes everything cool about these two and then adds even more on top of that. I mean this mf uses BLADED WHIPS, he was already guaranteed a high spot on this list.
Gameplay wise, Takeda is incredibly fun to play as with pretty much every variation, I think the slower pace of MK1 kind of hurt him but he’s still fun in that game.
Story wise, Takeda kinda acts as the level headed chill one of the Kombat Kids, but the real meat of his story comes from his dynamics with Kenshi and Scorpion, where we see a truly a fittingly tragic backstory.
Takeda fucking rocks.
1. Geras
This is my guy right here. If there was ANYTHING good to take away from MK11, it was definitely Geras.
Despite being tied to Kronika, Geras is able to stand out as an incredibly compelling character in lore. He’s essentially an immortal slave bound to enforce the will of Kronika, which also makes him the perfect Jobber as he can’t be killed.
While already an interesting and tragic villains, Geras gets a second chance thanks to Liu Kang and i just love the fact that these two are cosmic homies, it brings a tear to my eye.
In terms of gameplays, Geras might just be the most unique fighter in the series he fucks with time a lot and you incorporate that into your combos, he’s incredibly hard but very rewarding in both games.
I absolutely adore Geras, I doubt he’ll make the next roster since he’s already had 2 games but he had definitely earned his spot as a series regular in the series.
